The Eos Key is a dark and magical story that will keep you spellbound long after the last page.
Author and mother, D.M. Lewry, has steeped herself in the world of fantasy and the paranormal for the last two decades. After watching thousands of hours of film and television, and reading hundreds of books, she is currently working toward publishing her first work entitled The Eos Key, book #1 in the Wynter Blood series.
This slow-burn paranormal romance features an African American heroine struggling with mental health issues. D.M. Lewry’s goal is to help bring black women into the fantasy genre and promote mental health awareness among black females.
The first chapter hooked me - IMMEDIATELY! The scene was quite vivid and detailed and I felt as though I were right there. The words leapt off the page- or should I say - the audio. I listened to the audiobook. The narrators all did a fantastic job.
Unfortunately, I think that’s what made Eric so … boring to me. His narrator was the one I enjoyed the least. It was kind of mechanical and dare I say, ‘try hard.’ Whenever it was Eric’s chapter, I wanted ANY other narrator to tell the story. I expected dark, mysterious, sexy. I got mechanical, boring and honestly, petulant brat.
I like Alia. I saw that some readers hated her, but she witnessed the horrific death of her parents and was being fed pills that distorted her reality and TOLD that what she saw wasn’t real. Of course she’s not going to be this headstrong, take charge character! Her wanting to fit in and being afraid to upset the status quo is COMPLETELY NORMAL BEHAVIOUR. She just wants to keep her head down and survive.
That being said, let’s talk about the relationship with Eric. We got pages of the relationship, yet it still never felt fully fleshed out. They felt rushed, yet not at all. It was really oxymoronic. I felt like the relationship never really had a time to grow and develop in a way that gave us what I wanted it to.
They didn’t have the energy of ‘I’ve been waiting centuries for you, my mate.’ It was mostly Eric staring creepily from the shadows and her friends pointing out that he was watching her. It wasn’t romantic. It was hardly even a friendship if I’m being honest. Sure it was cordial, but it was giving platonic, but romantic.
Why did I continue reading? I enjoyed the story! It was good. I wanted desperately to find out WHAT Alia was and how everyone tied into her arc. I liked the big reveal (not about what Alia was, but the other one). I. Did. Not. See. It. Coming, but I enjoyed it.
Did I hate Anna? Yes, yes, I did.
So despite my few gripes, it was a good plot and for the most part, enjoyable characters. And yes, yes, I will be reading the sequel, not listening. I can put my own voice to Eric and perhaps I’ll get that mysterious air the author tried to convey on the pages.
There was so much mystery, secrets, twists, and action scenes that it overpowered the romance and character development. And it ended with a “to be continued” because absolutely nothing was resolved.
This book has a great storyline and I could see where the writer attempted to go. Sorry, but the main character was weak weak weak and never got stronger. At some point in 434 pages, Alia needed to develop a sense of self. I put this book down at least 20 times, picked it back up and hoped it was Alia's time to develop. This book was long, and I have no desire to read book 2.
The vampire book I never knew I needed. The world-building was just amazing. complex but easy enough to follow. Each chapter is from a different POV which I TRULY enjoyed. The book the entire time had me on the edge of my seat and I could not stop reading it. The emotions that I went through within this book were sadness inspiring romantic anger and even cried during a reunion seen that happen with the main POV. I knew from the moment of the first few sentences that I was going to love it. The book starts off with the main character going through a crisis scene. Later, she meets Eric (who is amazing, and I love how romantic and protective he is). The romance built over time and eventually led to family feuds, drama, and even a fighting scene within the book. Eric who is a vampire and Alia with her own supernatural abilities are not supposed to be together. Their love defies the rules, but for Eric, he doesn’t care. Throughout the book, Alia finds out more about herself more about the Wynter family, and how they’re all connected. I can't even explain how this book provokes so many emotions within myself. The anger I fell at a particular character, the love I had for Eric and Alia, her father and friend. Alia felt so relatable, and I loved watching her journey of finding out more about her parents and what happened. And can we talk about the steamy scenes … whoooa the writing was truly stunning, the characters are diverse there's LGBTQIA+ Rep, mental health Rep, and all of it done so well. With the audiobook, every POV has its own narrator my favorite being Roman.
4.5 enthusiastic stars rounded up This was an ARC, free audiobook, in exchange for an honest review. Just wanna get that out of the way. I went ahead and bought a digital copy of this🤷🏾♀️
I thoroughly enjoyed this! I don't want to give spoilers but loved the way this handled suicidal feelings (ideation) and managing hopelessness. It was beautiful, respectful and heartfelt. I'm always grateful for a fiction book, especially fantasy to tackle these real world elements.
I thoroughly enjoyed the world building. The world was complex yet easy to fall into and get lost. I liked that this features a cast of supernatural races, interacting in a world within our own. Sometimes new series will focus on one character and their powers and add the other supernatural elements and races in later books. This really roles out fully functioning supernatural world building complete with backstory and interesting mythos.
This features LGBTQA+ characters and I appreciated the way it was handled. There's not enough non-exploitive exploration of pan/bi characters. Much appreciated.
The narration was really nice. There were multiple narrators for multiple characters, each was quite good at emoting and their voices really made the characters distinct. The narrator for Roman was my favorite, his voice was like velvet! Wish he'd had more chapters, lol. I really liked the shorter, quick chapters which heightened tension and favored the pacing of the story.
This is largely a romance but also both an introduction to this world and an intriguing backstory that keeps the pace moving along. Sometimes romances can drag a bit and feel overly manufactured in places and this story avoids that. This has its steamy scenes as well. As well as perfectly paced reveals that really enhance the story snd keep the action moving along.
I haven't read the digital copy but I probably will before the 2nd installment because this ends with a cliffhanger of sorts. 😔🥰 which means more to come💜
This book will give you a bit of all of your favorite vampire/supernatural books, movies and tv shows while still creating its own story for us to get hooked on! I hope to see this on a big screen one day
Alia lost her parents at a young age and is navigating life as a young adult/adult with negative thought patters and suicidal thoughts that lead her into a bad relationship. Then she meets handsome (and rich), Eric Wynter, who has a big secret she can’t figure out. She can’t understand why he is so enamored with a “nobody” like her. And wait… nobody told her that she is a witch?!
What I liked: I loved that the main character was black. I have never read or seen any mainstream stories where the lead is black, much less a black woman (for all those saying Blade runner lol). I loved watching Alia’s confidence build slowly over the book and seeing how the events of the beginning of the book tied to the end. Characters were brought in with good timing and each contributed to the story in a meaningful way. I loved the writing and the way the author was to use so many different voices with ease. Also, loved the short chapters!
What I didn’t like: For people to say their relationship was dangerous, there wasn’t much work to break them up until it was too late! But I guess if people did their job there would be no book to read 😂
In The Eos Key: Wynter Blood Book 1, D. M. Lewry gives us a vast, paranormal story with multiple points of view. The varying points of view allow for clarity of storytelling so that the reader can navigate this complex story with ease. The story has some sensitive subject matters such as suicide attempts and ideation as well as suggested same sex relationships. The author uses tact as well as tolerance in their narrative. Eric Wynter is a centuries old vampire `who has sampled all the world has to offer and is jaded beyond wanting to live. Alia Carter understands what it means to feel so broken that death seems to be the only answer. Subsequently, when she sees Eric on a bridge in yet another suicide attempt, she tries to save him. As they plummet into the water, it is obvious to Eric that he is going to have to SAVE her. The way in which he saves her sets up one of the first amazing twists to this gripping story. I read all night until I had completed this rather lengthy book of more that five hundred pages (at least on my eReader). The book ends on a cliffhanger, so I am eagerly waiting for book 2!
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Thanks @dmlewry for giving me the opportunity to listen to the audio version of this book.
After seeing this book and listening to some of the authors IG lives, I knew I had to get my hands on this book. This was an excellent book. It kept me engaged and the narrator's were great. I will have to say that I felt like the narrator's matched their assigned character.
By the way, did you see that beautiful cover? I am loving all of it.
Each chapter is based on the POV of a character and each chapters flowed together and hit the spot each time. Wow!
In the beginning this book started off with a bang and it captured me at that very moment. There are times in your life when someone trains or prepare you for a particular situation and when that time comes you have the skills to remember what you’re taught. At the same time it can be a scary moment in life, because you have no idea what’s going to happen next. This was Alia and I would say that this character was amazing throughout the book.
This book gave me a little bit of everything and that’s what I liked about the story. You have romance that you’re always looking for. You have battles you go up against, whether it be with other people or with yourself. You have those moments in your life that causes you to be sad, but at the same time you have to continue living knowing that you will never forget what happened and continue to search for answers to your questions. There are times in your life you have to ask yourself did that really happen or am I imagining things, knowing in the back of your mind that it took place. Then there are those moments when you just have to make the best decision for yourself no matter what others thinks.
D.M. Lewry you did an awesome job with this book. Congratulations. I am so ready for book 2.
Jesus! Why is she so d**n pathetic? The entire 75% that I read I kept waiting for her to strap her big girl panties on and take some sort of accountability for her own safety, but the ‘witch’ was so d**n weak and pathetic. Scared of her own shadow. 🙄😒 Eric isn’t much better. Why’d he have to be so desperate. I mean she’s giving him bare minimum effort and he’s begging(literally) for more? Maybe I’ll come back and finish it, maybe I won’t.
DNF at 34%. maybe i’m stupid but i have no idea what’s happening in this book. the MMC is the brother of the FMC’s father but they’re not really brothers but no one has explained it. the FMC is constantly on the verge of a psychotic break and also plagued by crippling migraines which, again, no one has explained. i did my best but i can’t do 400+ pages of this just for it to end on a cliffhanger.
Vampires, witches, and werewolves on an adventure to protect forbidden love. Amazing! A passionate paranormal romance and a grounded urban fantasy. So good! The mental health struggles of our leads gave depth to the story and made me feel seen. Loved it!
Content warnings (may be spoilery): graphic violence, mental health struggles, suicide attempt, dysfunctional family dynamics.
Now I'm normally not a fan of vampire stories of any kind (you can thank Twilight for that) but this one was quite tasty...and gory.
Thank you, D.M. Lewry for this ARC! Coming soon in November.
The Eos Key: A Wynter Blood Novel by D.M. Lewry is the first book out of the Wynter Blood series that follows the fated couple Alia Carter and Eric Wynter--a vampire and a witch to put it plainly. This story really packs a punch. This story gives action, love, power, greed, sadness, and hope in a fantastical world with a lovely Black MC.
I genuinely love Alia and Eric's characters. They both are pure-hearted individuals who are just trying to find their footing in a world that they were thrust into. Eric is unlike any (white) male protagonist I've ever read. Sure he had his bad boy moments, but they were very brief and we got to know who he truly was early on which really added to the depth of his character. As for Alia, she's truly an anomaly. She really fought to the finish and seeing her character development was truly a delight because all that she endured was not something that anybody should have to go through. Hopefully, she weathers the storm.
As for the actual plot, this book was super interesting. It unlocked some core memories of me on Wattpad at like 12 AM when I was merely 12-years-old reading about werewolves and territories and councils. Great memories they were. It took me a minute to understand how everyone was connected to each other and the magic system (I wish there was a map on the cover), but it's not too hard to get the hang of. I also loved the multiple POVs. It added some great storytelling elements to the plot and really helped me understand a character from all angles. Towards the end, I felt like some of the POVs were unnecessary, but overall that was a great touch. I'm excited to see what the next book holds.
Combining romance, supernatural horror and an unflinching portrait of how people are shaped by their trauma, The Eos Key reminded me of the best parts of True Blood transplanted to a Northern setting.
Author D.M. Lewry mixes established supernatural tropes with her own creative twists to build a world that feels both fresh and yet as familiar as a game of Vampire: the Masquerade with friends.
The relationship between Alia and Eric builds slowly and naturally, with a great deal of sweetness as these two find solace in one another. The struggles they face along the way range from their own emotional baggage to hostile witches and werewolves, and you’re never quite sure which is the greater threat to their happiness.
I managed to tear through this story in a week, and by the end I was eager to find out what comes next in Book 2! I’m impressed that this was the author’s first published work, and look forward to reading more from her in the future.
This book gave me everything. Vampires and Werewolves and Witches, oh my!
Fantasy ✅ Romance ✅ Black female MC ✅ Forbidden Love ✅ Supernatural creatures ✅ Paranormal world ✅ Black author ✅
I loved it. The cover is beautiful and the book alternates POV. The beginning of the book captured my attention and held it all the way through.
“Be wary of the dark ones that walk in the light, for they are the ones that will steal your heart.”
This is my favorite quote in this book and to me, it sums up the entire thing. Alia’s heart is stolen by Eric, Eric’s heart is captured by Alia and they both stole my heart! The relationship between Eric and Alia is touching and sweet. It builds slowly but has me grinning from ear to ear. It takes no time to convince me that they belong together. But as both of them fall for each other, they are also putting each other in danger. All I want is for Eric and Alia to be together, I can’t wait for book 2.
Okay now for the words for my high mark. I liked the story I however did not like the Heroine. I thought she was too whinny for what her job was in the book. I felt like she was always sayings I want someone to save me. Now don't get me wrong i will read the next book when it comes out hoping that the MC grows up. I felt like she had the visions and growing understanding of the new world she was in and wasted it. But I was glad in the end she gave effort to save herself. I also, don't know about she calling her mate's brother daddy. That seems a little weird.
I do love the paranormal genre. I did not know what to expect with this story an I have to say I was Unexpectedly Captivated buy this story! If you enjoy a well written vampire and witch story, Read It. I just dove in and stayed there until the end, my time was well spent! I Loved It!!! I am totally looking forward to more! No Spoilers, I feel that they would ruin the experience!.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I haven't had a book hangover all year, but I'm stuck in this world with these characters! The plot was intricate but easy to follow and exciting! I love the family dynamic and strained relationships both romantic and personal. The audio was amazing, I hope to hear them in future productions. I can't wait for the rest of the series, it will be torture 😫. Thanks for sharing this with us 🩸🧛♂️🧙♀️🐺😈
D.M. Lewry did an amazing job with her debut novel! The book has a perfect mix of mystery, romance, fantasy, and sci-fi. From the beginning of the audiobook, I was drawn in. I typically have a hard time getting into fantasy and prefer historical fiction or steamy romance. The book is told from multiple points of view and that is reflected in the narration. Initially, it was a little confusing but over time I became used to it and preferred the voice changes.
Eos Key is fast-paced and keeps that tempo throughout the book. There were many jaw-dropping moments where I had to regroup. The story of Alia and Eric is full of love, hope, despair, and angst. The action in the book gave me all the feels of Twilight meets Romeo and Juliet, because of the forbidden love. When reading or listening to this book you will be transported to their world, the vivid imagery and colorful language make sure of that. I was happy to see that the main character Alia took charge and advocated for what she wanted. There were times in the book that I wanted Alia to be strong and she showed up in the end! Looking forward to the second book!
Read this book! Vampires, werewolves, lycans, witches, secrets & forbidden love. The ending is not the one I wanted because it left me in shambles but it is a great ass ending and I'm proud of Alia for doing what she needed to do! This book has some heavy topics in it such as two main characters with heavy mental health issues, the death of a parent, domestic violence, suicide attempts, violence, blood & gore. This book was really enjoyable, just be mindful of your triggers when reading and take it slow if necessary.
Throughly enjoyed this book. I could not put it down. I was able to visualize every scene. The author did an excellent job. Love the relationship between Alia and Eric. I hope there is more to come for these two. Can’t wait for the sequel.
I read the sample and was instantly drawn in but unfortunately, the book didn’t live up to expectations. It reminded me of The Vampire Diaries, Twilight and The Originals like this book was so Julie Plec coded but like any Julie Plec show, this book fell victim to doing too much.
There were too many characters, too many POVs and too much action that took away from what’s essentially supposed to be a romance. This book wasn’t super romantic, there was a massive jump between Alia being wary and afraid of Eric to them being in love, there wasn’t enough lead up.
I wanted to like Alia but she was bland and too self loathing for me. I get that she was dealing with depression and PTSD but that was her entire personality. She was very stuck in this “There’s nothing special about me” and she was right, there really wasn’t. Other than them being fated, it was hard to see what Eric truly saw in her. Alia was basically every heroine from every vampire book written during the Twilight era but Black. I appreciate woc leads but Alia was giving nothing.
I wanted to like Eric, he was basically Damon Salvatore meets Lucifer Morningstar but more emotional. I didn’t hate him but I didn’t love him either. As the hero, he was pretty meh. I thought I would like him and Alia together but I just didn’t feel the spark between them. I kinda liked that he was essentially obsessed with Alia before getting to know her but they never really dated, the author just let their fated relationship do all the work.
Again, there were too many characters. I really didn’t like the addition of Eric’s best friend, Kane, and the fact that he’s likely going to be third wheel in Eric and Alia’s relationship judging by the author’s Twitter. Personally, I’m not a fan of weird shit so none of that excites me. Overall, I kinda see where the author was trying to go but this book didn’t quite get there.
"Be wary of the dark ones that walk in the light, for they are the ones who will steal your heart."
Since middle school, I haven't read a book about vampires. However, this one speaks to my heart.
It starts with Alia (the main character) going through her 21st birthday, and then the suspense begins. She is the kind of person who enters a room and does not like to be seen. I think that's why I liked her. I could see much of myself in her personality. I am passionate about her. But, her story is tragic. With no family to turn to, her friends became her family.
About Eric, I honestly don't see a way to dislike him. He is one of those vampires who resembles a little bit of Damon Salvatore's character from The Vampire Diaries, but he is always a sweetheart and a gentleman. I believe the author may have watched The Vampire Diaries as some things are very similar. Ana, for example, reminded me very much of Rebekah Mikaelson (even her appearance is similar), yet I must agree that the author made her own world a really unique one from the original vampire stories we are used to.
I could not put the book down because I was so anxious to find out what would happen next. I definitely recommend this book! It is one for you to read at any time if you need some adventure. Lastly, I cannot end this review without quoting my favorite line from Eric Wynter:
“If you must be a rock, darling, let it be a diamond.”
I clicked the spoiler button. So if you don’t want to know don’t go any further.
When a author grabs you by putting TRIGGER WARNINGS for suicide. Which is nice especially if things regarding that particular warning you don’t want to deal with the trauma of your truth while reading.
The death of Alia’s best friend her ride or die friend who she trusted and who had her back in all things. Is killed while protecting Alia from things that go bump in the night. Revealing her part of keeping things from her designed by her Uncle and others to keep her safe.
Then she meets Eric and all bets are off on keeping her from harm and the council. Because they KNOW WHO AND WHAT SHE IS 😮😮
I truly loved this book. This was a author I happen to follow on IG and loved immensely. Ms D has shown she has the writing chops to be in this industry for a long time.
Can’t wait for the second book.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I read the preview chapters of the 1st draft on Inkitt, and it was SOOOO good. Vampires, witches, interracial romance, a jealous ex who's a lycan, a girl suffering with depression, anxiety, and PTSD finds out that the supernatural world exists.
Everything I want and need in a book. I can't wait for the official release!
Read the first draft of this book and throughly enjoyed it. Looking forward to the final product. It was refreshing reading a book where the main character was someone who looks like me. Can’t wait to find out what’s in store for Alia and Eric. I do hope they get back together.
Fans of The All Souls Trilogy and The Originals will sink their teeth into this swoon-worthy paranormal romance.
If me having this book in all three formats (audio, print, and ebook) is any indication, this high stakes, angsty vampire/witch romance is a decadent treat you won’t want to put down.
What I enjoyed:
1. Top-tier Audiobook Production This is one of my favorite audiobooks. The story has a multiple POV portrayed by multiple narrators on the audiobook (versus one narrator reading for several characters) which enhances the reading experience and fully immerses you into the story.
If you’re like me, I tend to be more invested in one POV more than others, but that wasn’t the case with the Eos Key. Each narrator and POV had a distinct sound and perspective that I enjoyed. The narrations for Eric and Lucien were extra amazing though.
2. Classic Premise with Excellent Execution If you love the slow burn and swooning forbidden romance and fated mates trope, sexy , angst-ridden vampires, and stories with powerful witches who haven’t tapped into their hidden legacy and potential, then you’re going to love this.
There are many stories with similar premises, but Lewry delivers the familiar tropes with unique and excellent execution. Her writing is sophisticated, intentional, and enticing , further enhanced by the expert narration in the audiobook.
Blend the chemistry and high stakes of Matthew and Diana’s romance from A Discovery of Witches with the themes of family and redemption from The Originals and you get this sexy, moody and satisfying story with a relevant spin that will resonate with our times.
3. Compelling Characters and relationships
I loved that no one was portrayed as all bad or perfectly good. They have complex pasts, they made mistakes, and their relationships (family, friendships and romance) have room for improvement.
Lewry explores all the ships: family dynamics, friendships, toxic relationships, even aspects of self worth and self love. I loved seeing the character Alia start to come into her own.
There was one point where Eric, one of the main characters was getting a little out of hand (selfish and a little too demanding in my opinion). I appreciated how other characters stepped in to give him a reality check while Alia (the main heroine and love interest) stood her ground.
I loved how Alia communicated her needs when things got too much. After being lied to, manipulated and more, I feel like her decisions towards the end of the book were on point. There may be a hint of a love triangle in upcoming books, and if there is, I think Eric has a strong contender for Alia’s affections. I’m not usually one to enjoy love triangles (because it’s usually obvious who the main character should choose) but the stakes and the tension would be high, and the conflict would be realistic and very interesting if the author decides go that route.
However the story goes, I’m invested. The Eos Key is a richly developed new world I can’t wait to continue exploring. I’m really looking forward to learning more about Lewry’s take on the different supernatural groups she features in her book and how the relationships established in this book will progress.
I also loved how the representation included was normalized. Lewry makes the diverse rep seem authentic and genuine.
4. The gritty realism No character leaves a fight unscathed. Characters experience physical, emotional, and mental battles in a way that creates real tension and palpable concern that your favorite characters just might not survive to see book 2.
Along with the action and horror sequences, Lewry touches on aspects of mental health in a respectful and considerate manner.
Do note: 1. This is the first book in a series. While the main story is resolved, there’s so much more to learn and understand. 2. Again, the author does touch on darker themes such as depression, suicide attempts, toxic relationships, grief and loss. 3. There is a realistic amount of descriptive gore and violence but if you’re a little squeamish, prepare yourself (I think it’s well done and appropriate for the genre without being gratuitous or ridiculous, but Lewry describes the action scenes well enough for you to bite your nails and cringe in some parts).
I highly recommend this book. Do yourself a favor and get the audiobook to optimize what’s sure to be an already amazing reading experience. I could listen to those narrators reciting the alphabet—they were that good 😍
