Let me say up front that I am not a believer in "technical analysis" as a discipline or method to obtain actionable information for entering or leaving positions - I have made this clear, with my reasons, in numerous previous reviews. I won't repeat this exercise here. Also, let me state that I rate non-fiction books in accordance to their usefulness to me. So not useful to me = low score. Hokay, let's start.
First the positives. The author has a clear writing style and gets to the point quickly and cleanly, so no meandering fishing stories or faux philosophizing here. This is a quick and easy read, without false pretensions. So that's good.
As to the rest, the book offers up all the usual chart & candlestick patterns that the "technical analyst" crowd gets so excited about, but this time dressed up with a bit of the language & concepts of supply and demand micro-economics, re-interpreting the "support" & "resistance" bands and trends and whatnot in those terms. Apparently the realization that supply and demand dynamics (might) shape price curves is a novel idea to many "technical" traders out there, at least, going by the large amount of (very) positive reviews of this book
To quote from the Introduction: (quote)
"This book is different. It still mentions some visual signals on the chart, but the main building block stems from two key microeconomic concepts: supply and demand. By discovering how supply and demand can affect market orders, we are talking about the backbone that drives any market operations, not just financial markets.
Trading based on the correlation between supply and demand, we follow the footprints of the big players in the financial markets. You’ll get an idea of why some traditional market signals don’t work as you expect, and why the same market zone may generate very different winning potentials regardless of other trade confirmation signals. The utmost goal in this book is to increase your winning trade probability – a concept that I don’t focus on too much in other books.
One of the most interesting parts of this book is tons of trading examples and illustrations that make your learning process easier and more exciting than ever. You will be mind-blowing about how easy but effective all the theories and strategies are without having to rely on many technical indicators." (page 5)
You have to like the enthusiasm! I was ready to have my mind blowing. In particular, I was looking forward to the "tons of trading examples" but found only a "ton" of price action graphs with some annotations on them ("enter the trade here" & "leave the trade here") without indication or proof of these patterns actually having been traded by author and his system. So that was a bit of a let down.
Look, I too can grab 50 screenshots from Barchart.com or Yahoo Finance and take my little blue pencil and festoon them with lines - defining zones, breakouts, slow-downs and whatnot. With a bit more effort I can crack open a book on, say, chaos theory & fractal geometry and come up with a nice explanations as to what makes my system tick, say something like "the price action curve uncoils from scale-invariant self-similarity to emergent re-patterning at a fractal dimension somewhere around 1.86". Sure. I can then publish a trading book without having risked a dime on actually using my system.
I am certainly not suggesting that this is what the author did, I kinda like the fella, but the present book is about as useful to me as the hypothetical trading book that I could have published with the above recipe.
One star. Avoid. Unless you believe in technical analysis, in which case you could definitely do worse than opening this book.
The book is well-structured, starting with the fundamental concepts of demand and supply and gradually delving into more advanced techniques and strategies. Miller's writing style is clear and concise, making complex topics accessible even to readers with limited trading experience. One of the book's key strengths is its focus on real-world applications. Frank Miller provides numerous practical examples and case studies that help readers grasp the concepts and see how they play out in different market scenarios. This approach allows traders to gain confidence in their analysis and decision-making process. Furthermore, the book emphasizes the importance of risk management, which is often overlooked in many trading guides. Miller dedicates a significant portion of the book to discussing risk control techniques, position sizing, and overall money management. This inclusion is commendable as it highlights the author's commitment to helping traders preserve capital and manage potential losses effectively. In conclusion, "Demand and Supply Trading" by Frank Miller is a valuable resource for traders interested in honing their skills using demand and supply principles. The book's emphasis on real-world examples, risk management, and practical strategies makes it a worthwhile read. However, readers should be prepared to dedicate time and effort to understand and implement the concepts effectively. Whether you are a novice or an experienced trader, this book can serve as a solid foundation for mastering demand and supply trading techniques.
