About the author
Bernardo Atxaga
148 books167 followersBernardo Atxaga (Joseba Irazu Garmendia, Asteasu, Guipúzcoa, 1951) belongs to the young group of Basque writers that began publishing in his mother language, Euskara, in the Seventies. Graduated in Economics for the Bilbao University, he later studied Philosophy at the University of Barcelona.
His first short story, Ziutateaz was published in 1976 and his first book of poetry Etiopia in 1978. Both works received the National Critics Prize for the best works in the Basque language.
He cultivates most genres: poetry, radio, cinema scriptwriting, theatre, children's books, articles, short stories... His national –and soon after international– recognition arrived with Obabakoak (1988) which, among other prizes, was awarded the National Literature Prize 1989 and that has been translated into more than twenty languages.
Many of his poems have also been translated into other languages and published by prestigious magazines such as Jahbuch der Lyrik, 1993, Die horen, 1995, Lichtungen, 1997 (Germany), Lyrikklubbss bibliotek, 1993 (Sweden), Vuelta, 1990 (Mexico), Linea d'ombra, 1992 (Italy) and others.

I almost certainly would never have read this novel had it not been gifted to me for my birthday. I had not heard of Atxaga and had no idea what to expect. I was surprised to find that this novel is really a collection of four distinct stories, only weakly interwoven.
For my part, the first and last of these stories were a great deal stronger than the middle two. At his best, Atxaga has a simple, natural, and winsome style that keeps the story light and airy. He likes to experiment with the narrator—making what would normally be an omniscient, impersonal narrator into another kind of character—which adds an additional layer of interest. But when Atxaga abandons straightforward narrative for something more phantasmagoric or surreal (as in the middle stories), he loses me.
In the end, I was pleased with the book. It is a quick and charming read. Indeed, I wouldn’t even mind being gifted another one by Atxaga!

Desde el otro lado es un libro de relatos con la muerte como tema principal.
En todas las historias se mezcla la realidad y la ficción, y se juega mucho con la imaginación del lector al imaginarse los espacios tan ambiguos en los que se desarrollan las historias.
En algunos casos me ha recordado a Canto jo i la muntanya balla, sobre todo en los relatos que ocurren en un entorno rural, y cuyos personajes reaparecen a lo largo del libro.
En general me ha gustado, aunque en algunos relatos me ha costado seguir el hilo de la historia.
En todas las historias se mezcla la realidad y la ficción, y se juega mucho con la imaginación del lector al imaginarse los espacios tan ambiguos en los que se desarrollan las historias.

El libro se compone de una serie de relatos cortos cuyo hilo conductor es la muerte.
A lo largo del libro se nos muestra vida y muerte como dos conceptos que a pesar de ser opuestos guardan una estrecha relacion.
Es un libro muy fácil y rápido de leer, no se hace pesado e invita reflexionar. Muy recomendable.

Primera vez que leo un libro de Bernardo Atxaga y debo decir que me gusto, en algunos momentos lentos, en otros ágil, pero el tema y cómo se entrelazan las historias, los personajes como saltan y aparecen de un relatos otro y descubrir cómo son representados me gusto. Lo recomiendo aunque su narrativa metafórica se limita para los lectores solo de este estilo.

Bernardí atragantado Cuidado de un menor discapacitado y su responsabilidad, el hermano que le des puerta su sexualidad, Teresa se enamora del hermano, Carmen la prima de ambos que quiere quedarse con su herencia, envidias familiares, Andoni está enfermo de cáncer y busca su curación donde sea, el pueblo que le apoya económica para su curación, al final se muere. Su amigo Ismael que cuida el cuervo de Andoni que su Madré le envenena. La chica que quiere descubrir el sexo y al final un grupo chicos emborrachados r, el maltrato de los animales
