A life in pieces. A hundred-year-old journal. And a chance for love to be reborn.

Olivia Ward arrived in Bethlehem Springs alone—with no job, no home, and no money—after her manipulative ex-husband used his power and wealth to destroy everything. Six years later, the peaceful life she rebuilt is once again turned upside down when she learns that her fifteen-year-old daughter, Emma, will be coming to live with her. The reunion should be a dream come true, but years of deception have driven a wedge between them. And Emma seems more interested in an old diary she discovered than reconciliation with her mother.

Tyler Murphy knows what it’s like to lose everything. Propelled by his history in the foster-care system, he’s determined to root out dishonesty and protect the most vulnerable through his work as an investigator. When he’s hired to investigate Olivia Ward, though, he finds himself longing to believe she’s exactly who she appears to be, and he soon realizes that his desire to learn more about her has nothing to do with his job. But how can he pursue a relationship that began with a lie?

In this latest novel from award-winning author Robin Lee Hatcher, an antique diary, a family-fueled investigation, and unexpected feelings collide to create a promise that’s worth fighting for.

Quick easy read with a Christian romance that warms the heart.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I was never one for a lot of drama and angst in my books. I love to read to get away from it all, so dragging all of that stuff into my story is counter-productive for me.
Hatcher is known for her beautiful homey Christian romances that are filled with grace and love. Are the families perfect? Oh, far from it, but the story is about how the characters overcome with understanding and peace. I enjoy the slower pace and less anxious feelings that her stories radiate.
Like the Wind offers a different twist on the theme, with the mother being the one who was hurt and punished by her ex-husband. A woman of strength and courage, Olivia is a fabulous character. Tyler is a beautiful balance for her and their growing feelings are encouraging allowing her to blossom and grow as she develops her relationships.
This story is full of rich heartfelt feelings that just allow you to shut out the world for a while and be calm. A wonderful book that is a delight to read.
After nearly a decade of estrangement, a mother and teenage daughter work to create a new relationship. Each chapter ends with a journal entry from the 1930s. The journal helped teenager Emma adjust to a completely different world than she was accustomed to living. Wonderful Biblical references in the journal.
When Olivia Ward arrived in Bethlehem Springs, she had no job, no home and no money. Her power hungry wealthy husband Daniel had taken everything from here including their nine year old daughter Emma. Over six years he limited Olivia’s access convincing Emma her mother didn’t want her. But now circumstances have changed dramatically and Emma is to live with her, a fact Emma is far from happy about.
Tyler Murphy , along with his sister Christa, were victims of the foster care system. What happened to his sister has given him a deep concern for vulnerable children.
He works as an investigator for a law firm and accepts a job to investigate Olivia. Everything he sees convinces him she is a good mother. But is he letting his attraction to her cloud the situation? And can Olivia find a way to reach her sullen daughter and restore some sort of relationship? And how much damage will lies do in more than one relationship? And what impact will the old journal from the 1930s that Emma finds and starts to read have?
This book is told in two time frames, the present and Millie’s diary entries from the 1930s. While in the present Olivia is trying to reconnect with her daughter, in the diary Millie is trying to reconnect to a God who she feels doesn’t care a jot about her.
I enjoyed both stories but actually enjoyed the modern story more. However, I fourties’ easy to relate to Millie and her questioning of God and His care when the storms of life hit hard.
This book is very obviously Christian in outlook with numerous bible, prayer and church references. It is all part of who the characters are.
Olivia, Emma, Tyler and Millie are all well developed and easy to emphasise with. I liked the setting, the theatre involvement and community. An enjoyable read that will tug at the emotions. Perhaps a bit abruptly resolved towards the end but overall thought provoking and well worth reading.
Robin Lee Hatcher does a great job penning a story that pulls on the heartstrings. In this story, we meet Olivia Ward, a woman who is hurt and stunted when her husband Daniel divorces her, takes Emma, their daughter with devious means, leaves her homeless and penniless. She has to depend on help from her parents and a friend, to make it. Olivia and Emma visit every other weekend until her ex moves across the country taking their daughter. She doesn't have the money to pay for trips across the country so she and Emma drift apart. When Daniel is killed, Emma moves back to Bethlehem Springs, Idaho from Florida with her mother, but Emma is dealing with grief and past hurts. When Emma gets involved in a local community play, she opens up. She found a diary written almost one hundred years ago during the Great Depression by a woman with roots in Bethlehem Springs. Millies's thoughts are an eyeopener for Emma, who grew up a child of privilege, and Millie writes about her struggles with life, tragedies, disappointments, and her faith. This is a touching story as we watch mother and daughter reconnect and each makes new friends and heal from past hurts and misunderstanding with the help of faith. Tyler Murphy is an investigator with a law firm and a case pushes him to get to know the Wards. He is a man of faith that has had his own share of hurts, but his work takes his interest in Olivia beyond the case, and she is attracted to him. This is another lovely story by Ms. Hatcher for those who enjoy stories of romance and faith.
Like the Wind is a stand alone book by Robin Lee Hatcher. I knew within reading the first few pages that I would going to enjoy this read. Olivia Ward has had a rough few years. She divorced her abusive wealthy husband but lost custody of her daughter Emma. Her ex didn't really want the child but being the cruel vindictive person he was he didn't want her to have custody. He got custody of Emma and moved to Florida which made it nearly impossible for Olivia to have any visitation rights since she was barely able to make ends meet as it was. Her ex didn't even spend any time with his daughter putting her in an expensive boarding school. After seven years Olivia gets custody of Emma after her ex is killed in a car crash. For some reason the ex's money is tied up in his business so Emma can't go to that expensive school anymore and goes to live with her mother Olivia in Idaho. She's not happy with her living situation and resents her mother very much. What I loved about Olivia is that she kept her opinions to herself about her ex. She didn't unload all the evil things her ex did to her daughter. She was extremely patient with her daughter when she acted resentful, unsurely and generally a spoiled brat. She helped her daughter get into community theater and slowly Emma began to warm up.. This is a dual timeline store that is told in the form of a diary which Emma reads. The diary was written in the 1930s. Diary didn't have anything to do with current story but with Emma reading the diary it brought her closer to the Lord. And then there is Tyler who is interested in Olivia but he's harboring a secret. Really enjoyed this story.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own."
Olivia Ward has lost everything; her marriage, her career, and her daughter, Emma. All thanks to her controlling, wealthy and powerful former husband.
Six years later, Emma comes back to Olivia after her father has passed away. She is an angry and sullen teenager trying to understand and weather what has come her way. Olivia is at a loss as to how to parent her daughter who she doesn’t know well.
Tyler Murphy has been hired by Peter Ward, Emma’s grandfather (her father’s Dad) to investigate Olivia and determine if she is a good mother. In the process, Tyler starts to fall for Olivia, and she for him. She is hesitant to walk in faith after what Emma’s father did to her.
Emma finds a diary of a woman with whom Emma finds kinship even though they are separated by almost 100 years, but they have some similarities.
The diary entries were meant to show that when we trust and pray to God that given time, He will( and does) show up and show His faithfulness to his people. Olivia slowly realized that God had been in her life the entire time, it was her who was being rebellious about the way her life had turned out. She returned to God and his ways and she was able to enjoy his faithfulness and promises fulfilled in her life.
Like the Wind was a lovely reminder of God’s love for his people. That like the wind which at times can be fierce, His love is everlasting.
My gratitude to NetGalley and Thomas Nelson. All opinions are mine.
Like the Wind by Robin Lee Hatcher is a dual timeline story. The historical part is told completely through diary entries, which I really liked. I always know I’m going to enjoy Ms. Hatcher’s stories. She can be counted on to have a wonderful faith thread that runs throughout the story and her characters are always likable and easy to root for.
I felt for Olivia and all she had been through because of her ex-husband. The relationship between Olivia and her daughter Emma grew naturally and seemed very realistic. I felt Tyler was the perfect match for Olivia. Normally, a main character keeping a secret would bother me, but in this case I saw why he had to and I was glad it didn’t become a huge issue in the story.
I loved the diary entries and the faith message that was within. My favorite quote from this story is the following:
“I am not alone. No matter how I feel, no matter what storms buffet me, I am not alone. Jesus is in the boat with me. He cares.”
Such a needed, peace inducing reminder! If you’re looking for a sweet romance with a strong faith thread, this is the story for you.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own. The faith thread is strong. 4 stars.
I was happy to see that this author has written another book so I snatched it up.
So very good and one that you'll not want to put down!
My favorite thing was the inspirational messages. Hatcher expertly weaves them in to remind her readers that God is always there.
This book is written in a dual time line but still good.
I enjoyed in getting to know the characters especially Olivia. Didn't much care for her father though. What he did was wrong.
I will be looking forward to more of Hatcher's stories for they never disappoint me. 5 stars for a job well done!
My thanks for a copy of this book. I was NOT required to write a positive review. All opinions are my own.
Great story of trusting God all the time, especially in the storms of life. I liked the setting, the dual timeline stories that linked together perfectly and shorter chapters are wonderful, in my opinion. The story was a bit slow for me sometimes; that's why it is a 4 star rating. But this book does make you ask yourself questions that the characters ask themselves and look deeper into some things. Recommend!
This is an interesting read. I was thrown off at first about diary entries thrown in suddenly. I wish I could have learned more about the diary author’s life after her one diary was completed and before she was very old.
The storyline is a good one. We live in a time of broken families and abusive situations. It is a problem that many do not handle in a godly way.
Read about Olivia’s heartbreak and how live unfolds for her.
Rating: 4/5 Stars
This is a first time read by Robin Lee Hatcher, new author to this reader. Rarely read dual timeline stories, however “Like the Wind” was a refreshing and emotional story with developed characters that are unforgettable.
Olivia Ward’s life took a terrible turn when she divorced her husband and because of wealth, he took custody of their daughter Emma. Their bond is estranged until her ex-husband is tragically killed and she regains physical custody and tries to cope with the newness of their relationship. There is wariness and the pain Olivia feels is surreal. Tyler Murphy is hired to investigate Olivia but in turn falls romantically in love with her. Both characters are very likeable individuals that leave you captivated.
The story is told through a diary of a young married woman living during the Great Depression. It is the dual timelines that tells the stories about the real-life struggles and issues and learning to have hope when it seems there is none. Not having read anything by this author, it is evident that the author’s religious beliefs and faith are prevalent throughout the book. A well-written story that is emotionally driven on faith, courage, hope and love. Really enjoyable and highly recommend the read.
Olivia Ward comes to Bethlehem Springs, Idaho, with very little to her name. Newly divorced, her ex husband took everything, leaving her with nothing. He even got custody of their daughter, Emma. When Olivia hears of her exs death, she brings her daughter back to Idaho to live. Emma is used to a living at a boarding school and doesn't want to live in a small town. Olivia tries her best to ease Emma into her new life. There is another story within a story. Told through journal entries from 1931, written during the Great Depression., in the voice of Millie, a young wife and mother, who shares her story of hard times and how she gets through them. This book was a good one, I read it in less than 24 hours.
Wow! This story grabbed me almost from the beginning. I was sad for it to end. Almost like parting with old friends.
Marriage did not turn out the way Olivia had hoped and dreamed. Her divorce was long and left her broke financially, broken hearted and without custody of her young daughter, Emma. That is what money and power can sometimes do. Even worse, was when Daniel moved himself and Emma to Florida, putting much distance between Olivia and Emma. As time passed, distance grew between Olivia and Emma. Who knew what Daniel was telling the child?
Olivia lives in Bethlehem Springs, Idaho renting a place from her very good friend, and eventually purchasing it.
Emma is now fifteen years old and living in an expensive boarding school when she was told her father had died. Her world is now turned upside down as she is forced to move to Idaho and live with her mother. Daniel had left absolutely no provisions for his daughter. How could he do that to her?
Emma is very sad and angry. Life as she knew it is over. The chasm between mother and daughter is quite wide.
I appreciated that Olivia was very careful to not speak ill of Emma's dad to her. That is so easy to do and parents have no idea the damage that is done to a child through that.
Tyler Murphy works for a law firm as an investigator and has been hired by Daniel's father to investigate Olivia and see if she is a fit mother for Emma. Daniel had cut his own father off, and he never had the opportunity to meet either Olivia or Emma. During Tyler's investigation he soon realizes that Olivia is indeed a fit mother and a wonderful person. Uh, oh. Do you see where this is heading?
I hope I haven't given away too much of the story. I can't say enough what a fantastic story this is! I thoroughly loved it! I also loved all the scripture throughout the story.
I was given an advanced ecopy by the publisher, Thomas Nelson through Netgalley. I was under no obligation to write a positive review.
A private eye investigating the leading lady? So intriguing but bound to be trouble! I loved every minute of it. This aspect of the romance was very well written and kept me hooked throughout.
The difficult relationship between a mother and daughter was well written. It’s been a while since I read this book (about six months; I’m way behind on reviews at the moment), but this aspect stood out enough for me to jot a note about it.
I wasn’t sure how the journal (historical thread) connected to the contemporary thread for the longest time. It was rather fun how Emma discovered the journal, but I would have liked to see a stronger connection from one era to the other throughout the story. Otherwise, it can feel like two stories were slapped together instead of being written in two separate books.
The solid sense of community stood out to me. Definitely a highlight for me when community is featured. This is so needed in society right now.
Faith, family, and contentment were strong themes in this story—a trio of my favorite things!
It was neat to see how these characters struggled through the Great Depression and with the loss of a child. So well written!
Content: alcohol, drugs mentioned, overdose mentioned, drunkenness
This is the first time that I have read anything by this author, but it will not be my last!
I enjoyed the amount of Scripture that is in this story and the prayers by the different characters.
This is another dual timeline with a diary involved and left me wanting to find out how the story would end.
Tyler, Emma and Olivia were my favorite characters.
Thanks souch to netgalley and the publisher for the arc. The opinions are my own.
A sweet and gentle story about two mature people falling in love is interwoven with the diary of a young woman and her family struggling through the Great Depression in “Like the Wind”, by Robin Lee Hatcher (Thomas Nelson).
What I really liked about this book is the very tentative and slow process of the main characters, Tyler and Olivia, falling in love. Both their backstories are fascinating and add to the progress, nuances and restraint in their involvement.
Tyler could be a hero tortured by his past, but no, he’s steady and tranquil, even if sometimes sad memories and guilt haunt him. I liked that he’s solid, yet also a little bit broken.
Olivia’s emotional and psychological scars are of another kind, yet heartbreaking. She’s such a strong woman despite everything she went through.
The relationship between Olivia and Emma is also engrossing, full of reserve and wariness (from the teen) in the beginning. The mother’s pain is palpable.
The author’s religious beliefs and faith play an important role in both the past and present stories.
I liked how the story of Millie and Harry and their family’s struggles during the Great Depression connected to the contemporary characters through Emma’s motivation.
I thought Tyler took too much time telling Olivia the truth and was a bit indulgent about it.
There’s a small town atmosphere and a tight-knit community feeling in the mountain town of Bethlehem Springs that are appealing.
There are so many things I like about reading a Robin Lee Hatcher novel. She always gives us well crafted characters that you will not soon forget. She has a special way of crafted life lessons throughout her story. I believe both Tyler Murphy and Olivia Ward are two of my favorites. Olivia is such a strong women who has been beaten down by life more than once, but she keeps getting up. Tyler is the type of guy you pray your daughter will meet and marry. I found him to be the perfect book boyfriend.
I loved the idea of finding a historical diary, but I found I often was lost in reading when the diary just appears with no introduction or explanation. Even so, I really enjoyed Like The Wind.
I want to thank Thomas Nelson along with NetGalley for allowing me to read and review this book. The opinions in this review are my own.
Robin Lee Hatcher has such a beautiful way of writing stories that not only tell beautiful romantic love stories, but that also celebrate family in a beautiful way too. Like the Wind was no exception. In this story we meet Olivia who had just been reunited with her daughter, from whom she'd be isolated from due to a messy divorce. While there is a love story as well, much of the book does revolve around their relationship as well.
This story goes back and forth between several POVs- Olivia, her daughter Emma, Tyler and a 1930s diary that Emma has found. I must admit at first this really through me because it changed rather abruptly each time, and it took me a bit to catch on. I do think that perhaps this abrupt change was actually more to do with the formatting of the ARC digital copy I received, as those can sometimes be a little off when it comes to page layouts (so spaces between POV changes, for instance, may not have actually showed up on my end, but would in the finished copy. Having read previous books by this author, I know that typically her transitions between timelines and such are generally very clear.
Once I got used to that minor issue, I absolutely adored this book. My heart broke for Emma and Olivia and all that had been through. I was drawn into their story and so badly wanted them to get their happy ending. The author did a great job of capturing their unique relationship well. I also found Tyler to be such a good match for Olivia as well.
There were some parts that I perhaps would have liked to see expanded on, but overall I thought this was such an enjoyable read. If you enjoy inspirational stories of mother/daughter relationships as well as romance too, this is certainly one to check out.
**I received a complimentary copy for consideration. All thoughts are my own.
Tbh, the plot summary on the back of the book sounded a bit trite, but I really enjoyed Olivia and Emma's story and especially enjoyed the insight that the diarist found through her own trials.
I loved this dual storyline! I'm becoming quite fond of them, I've realized, and Ms. Hatcher writes them so well! You have one storyline from the 1930's taken totally from a diary written by a young mother who is struggling to do all she has to do for her young family as they move around due to the Depression, but she is filled with faith, although it ebbs and flows as trials befall her. Then, the main story focuses on Olivia, who was dealt a very raw deal by her ex-husband who was incredibly mean to her, just because he wanted to be, and took her daughter away from her when they split, along with all their money. She has had to struggle to pull herself up financially and emotionally for several years until one day her ex dies and she gets her now teenage daughter back - to the delight of Olivia but not so much the daughter who is pulled away from everything she knows. I felt for all the characters who had to make adjustments and learn to be together again. This included a couple men that became important to them. Tyler, especially, had lost everything when he was young and now that he is hired to investigate Olivia by the grandfather, he finds out Olivia just might be the woman he's been waiting for all along. A fabulous story of second chances.
This was a great story about God bring about restoration in His time. It is difficult to be patient in the waiting, but God is listening to our prayers. The characters in this story have to learn to trust God and other people again. It is difficult but they find that their lives are much better for it!
I've enjoyed many of the Robin Lee Hatcher books that I've read so far, so anticipated enjoying Like the Wind too. And I was not disappointed.
While I enjoy dual-time stories, this one was a bit jarring at first. I kept trying to figure out the correlation between present-day and yesteryear and not getting anywhere. Once I gave up on that, the connection was revealed and what a sweet way to teach a lesson!
I enjoyed Olivia and Tyler's story, especially as Olivia's relationship with her estranged daughter blossomed. The conflict and strife in the story felt realistic without being over-the-top, and the reminders of God's love and provision throughout the story spoke to my heart.
Thank you to Robin Lee Hatcher, Thomas Nelson and NetGalley for an advance review copy.
I've read Robin Lee Hatcher books for a long time. I worked in a used book store for fifteen years where I was first introduced to her secular writings. She's always had a way with words, and now, she has worked faith into her stories seamlessly.
Olivia has moved to Bethlehem Springs, Idaho, after a rather bitter divorce in which her ex-husband used his wealth and power to wrest custody of their daughter from her. Now he is dead and he has left no resources for their daughter, Emma. Olivia has had to go to Florida and bring Emma back to Idaho. Emma hates Olivia, hates her circumstances, hates the small town life, hates being away from her friends (who turn out to be fair-weather friends), and hates her life, in general. Part of the issue is that her father poisoned her mind against her mother and mislead her about her mother's feelings toward her. The one thing she did find palatable in Bethlehem Springs is the theater group.
Tyler Murphy has been hired to investigate Olivia and Emma for Emma's paternal grandfather. Tyler doesn't anticipate falling for the woman he's been scoping out. He is involved in the theater company as a technician, so he had a front row seat to the dynamic between Olivia and Emma.
One of the driving factors in this novel is a diary written by a local woman in the 1930s during the height of the Great Depression. It also held the key to the reparation of Olivia's and Emma's relationship.
I've read a very similar stories using a diary to describe what life was like in another period of history. It seems that when a plot device is new, every author starts using it and then it becomes a trope. It makes the story predictable and to a certain degree less enjoyable because of the predictability. While Robin did an admirable job using the diary, it wasn't until deep into the novel the reason for the diary being included was explained. The use of the boy meets girl, boy gets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl back formula was another factor in the predictability of the story. I still appreciate Robin's writings and will probably still pick up her books when they are offered. Four Stars.
Thomas Nelson Fiction provided the copy I read for this review. All opinions expressed are solely my own.
Like the Wind by Robin Lee Hatcher
Olivia Ward arrived in Bethlehem Springs alone—with no job, no home, and no money—after her manipulative ex-husband used his power and wealth to destroy everything. Six years later, the peaceful life she rebuilt is once again turned upside down when she learns that her fifteen-year-old daughter, Emma, will be coming to live with her. The reunion should be a dream come true, but years of deception have driven a wedge between them. And Emma seems more interested in an old diary she discovered than reconciliation with her mother.
Tyler Murphy knows what it’s like to lose everything. Propelled by his history in the foster-care system, he’s determined to root out dishonesty and protect the most vulnerable through his work as an investigator. When he’s hired to investigate Olivia Ward, though, he finds himself longing to believe she’s exactly who she appears to be, and he soon realizes that his desire to learn more about her has nothing to do with his job. But how can he pursue a relationship that began with a lie? ~ from the publisher
This quick enjoyable read will not disappoint Robin Lee Hatcher fans. Like the Wind is told in a dual timeline that keeps the reader engaged. Ms. Hatcher always writes characters that the readers can empathize with and this title holds true to that. New readers will enjoy her story telling abilities and character driven story. This reader appreciated the way Ms. Hatcher repaired Olivia’s relationship with her daughter, Emma and a realistic and sweet way.
Robin Lee Hatcher is an excellent Christian author, and she has written yet anther excellent book. "Like the Wind" centers on Olivia, a woman whose ex-husband has cruelly taken her little girl from her. After his unfortunate death, the little girl (now a teenager) comes to live with Olivia, and she has to figure out how to rebuild their relationship. Not only is she growing that relationship, but another man, Tyler, is expressing interest in her. She has to decide if these relationships are worth risking her heart again.
I appreciate Hatcher's ability to weave faith into the storyline without becoming "preachy." This was a cute, sweet read and I really enjoyed it! Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC. All opinions are my own.
I have read several dual time storyline books recently and have really grown to love the two-stories-in-one style. And of course Robin Lee Hatcher is such a talented storyteller, all her books are a shoe-in for my reading list.
Times are hard, emotions are deep, but the main characters (Tyler and Olivia) and readers are rewarded with a sweet, wholesome romance. I especially enjoyed the historical narration through diary entries.
#BookRevew: LIKE THE WIND by Robin Lee Hatcher
Like the Wind is a quick standalone story. It focuses on a mother’s love for her children.
This was a dual timeline though the characters are not blood related. In 1931, Millie liked writing in her diary. Millie loved her family and her feelings were evident in her entries. At present, Olivia went through a divorce and lost custody of her daughter. Olivia’s POV showed us her inner feelings and struggle in all of these.
I appreciated the story’s focus on a mother’s love for her children but it was a little slow at times. I have always enjoyed the author’s other books but this was not my favorite. I didn’t connect to Olivia’s character. I knew that she was hurting but somehow it did not evoke deep feelings for me. I do like the message that God’s love endures forever. Jesus cares for us.
