Within These Gilded Halls

Rate this book
Hidden treasures and betrayal mingle with unexpected love in Abigail Wilson's latest Regency romance. After studying art under Miss Drake, a renowned painter, Phoebe Radcliff is certain she can finally move beyond the childish mistake that's kept her away from home. She is thrilled when Miss Drake employs her to complete a complicated ballroom renovation, believing it will lead to a new, happier future. Everything changes, however, the moment Miss Drake is murdered. With her last breath she imparts the location of a clue to Phoebe. Can the biggest secret of Avonthorpe Hall be true--the rumored treasure real? Phoebe is tasked to finish her work in the ballroom by Miss Drake's infuriatingly regimented yet all-too-handsome nephew, Lt. Graham Burke. Determined to fulfill the promise she made to her beloved teacher to find the treasure, Phoebe also works to uncover the truth about Miss Drake's death--surely the two must be linked. If only she can do so before Lt. Burke leases the house. But dark shadows line the gilded halls of Avonthorpe and soon enough, Phoebe realizes she's not the only person who knows about the clues. What's worse, she'll need Lt. Burke's help to stay ahead of whoever is hard on her heels. If only she weren't so attracted to him. And why is she? She's always had far greater plans for her life than settling into marital bliss. Caught up in a deadly race for answers, Phoebe must find a way to breach the shroud of lies that surrounds every last resident in the house and, more importantly, face a past she's been running away from for far too long. This another great story by Abigail Wilson set in Regency England. Suspense and mystery with a bit of romance kept me turning pages. Phoebe Radcliff is refurbishing the paint trim in the ballroom of Avonthorpe Manor for the owner, Miss Drake, and her childhood friend Daniel is helping. Someone in the manor killed Miss Drake but before she died, she told Phoebe where to find a clue to finding the infamous Drake treasure and that she didn't want "him" to find it. Could this be her nephew Lt. Graham Burke? He is in residence at the time. But there are many more possible suspects and Lt. Burke is very charming. In fact, Phoebe and Graham unite to solve the mystery. Someone else is looking too. Maybe Phoebe has a confidant that is not a true friend. Afterall, she has a couple more she lets in on the clues. I really liked Phoebe and Graham and really wanted him to be a trustworthy person. This is an interesting mystery to solve and nice setting with some angst and danger but a lovely ending. Highly recommend to Regency and historical fiction lovers.

Sweet and slow romance, historical, and mystery, are all subjects that are attractive by themselves but when combined so efficiently into a very interesting plotline, reading becomes thoroughly an enjoyable experience.

Abigail Wilson's latest release Within These Gilded Halls is a must read for all fans of Jane Austen’s books. You know the kind that makes you feel like taking a leisurely stroll in the garden twirling the parasol around. Of course, I didn’t mean in any frivolous way but more like in an enchanted way. There is a peculiar quality in the author’s writing that makes one want to dream and that I believe is quite an achievement by Abigail Wilson.

By mixing in a treasure hunt into the story which is predominantly about the mistakes one can make and learn from that mistakes, Within These Gilded Halls was utterly captivating. Phoebe and Graham do give a kind of Liz and Darcy vibes and by pacing it excellently the reader enjoys the steady change in their relationship, from one of dislike to acquaintances, to friends and then the realization of deep love between them. The mystery of the treasure and a murderer adds the necessary suspense that keeps the story progressing but it was really the conversations between Phoebe and Graham that was the highlight of the story. Phoebe’s guilt of having disappointed her father and Graham inadvertently saying some profound things that give Phoebe courage and strength was brilliantly done.

Like her central protagonist who is an artist, Abigail Wilson’s Within These Gilded Halls is like a painting that one can stare at for hours altogether for the sheer pleasure of it.

3.5⭐Thanks to the publisher for the eARC and Netgalley, all my opinions are my own.

Historical Christian Mystery romance. The mystery is complex without being confusing, the romance is sweet and slow, a lot of twists and turns without being predictable, the plot twist was on point, well-written character development.

The beginning was too slow, and all the twists and surprises happened at the end. And because there was so much happening the characters will get distracted or behave inconsistently, and that will pull me out of the story; overall was a very enjoyable read.

I'll admit it: I'm one of those readers who judges a book by its cover because, well, it's the first thing I see. A beautiful cover catches my eye. Within These Gilded Halls has a stunning cover, and I almost wanted to read it just because of the cover alone. I've never read a book by Abigail Wilson before, mainly because I'm always reading something WW2-related, but I wanted to give this book a try. I'm so glad I did!

Within These Gilded Halls is, honestly, one of the first regency romance books I've read and loved. I don't know why I'm not the biggest fan of regency romances--maybe because a lot of the storylines feel overused or their plots are too predictable. The author took me by surprise with this book in the best way possible.

What I loved most about this book was the Pride & Prejudice (2005 movie) vibes this book gave me. Graham and Phoebe were literally another Mr. Darcy and Lizzie to me in that what they first despised about each other became the very thing they fell in love with once they spent time with each other and began to understand the other. This was so beautiful and well done. The switch from seeing each other as enemies to acquaintances, and then to friends and more than friends, was paced perfectly. It definitely made their interactions with each other feel so much more believable.

There were some great redemption threads in this story that I absolutely loved. None of the characters were perfect; in fact, they were quite human. They made mistakes, wrestled with guilt over them, and experienced the same fears of rejection that all of us do. If we truly allow someone to see us for who we are, mistakes and all, will we still be lovable? Phoebe's character wrestles a lot with this, and it was a solid character arc in the book.

I honestly don't really have any complaints with this book. It was clean, faith-filled, touching, and exciting. I'd absolutely read it again and recommend it to friends.

"Running toward something, even with the best of intentions, can also mean running away from something else."

"People are not always what they seem or defined by one bad decision."

“Within These Gilded Halls” is a first time read by Abigail Wilson, new author to this reader. Well, what to say about this story…heck it kept me up all night wanting to get to the end. Glad to have been on holiday to enable me to do so.

The story is about the daughter of Lord Torrington, Phoebe Radcliff who is an artist that has studied under a renowned painter. She left home after being betrayed and scandalized. She is employed by Miss Drake to complete a ballroom renovation…something she believes will bring her happiness and a future. When Miss Drake is murdered, her whole life changes. Phoebe is left with a clue to solving a murder and finding a treasure. She is later joined by Lt. Graham Burke, the handsome nephew of Miss Drake.

Knowing the clue, Phoebe finds herself in danger and with help of Graham they travel to unravel clues before other individuals of Avonthorpe Hall beat them to the punch. Love the suspense and adventure. The characters put you in the mind of Mr. Darcy and Miss Elizabeth and you can see the comparison between Phoebe and Graham. I really enjoyed the interactions between the H/h. The story was well-written and kept me engaged right to very end. Although I found some historical hiccups in the story, but it did not overshadow the intent of the plot. Looking forward to reading more by this author. Recommend the read.

Lovers of regency romance mystery stories will really enjoy Within These Gilded Halls by Abigail Wilson! I had a fun time reading this new regency story all about Phoebe Radcliff and her renovation of a beautiful ballroom for her art teacher, Miss Drake. But when Miss Drake ends up being murdered and provides a clue to Phoebe with her last breath, things get crazy fast in Avonthrope Hall. So many questions. Who killed Miss Drake? Is this rumored treasure within these halls real? Who can we trust? Will Miss Drake’s charming nephew Lt. Graham Burke and Phoebe be able to work together to get all the answers to their burning questions?

This was such a fun time! A clean, regency read with romance, mystery and all the historical aspects we love. I loved Abigail’s The Vanishing at Loxby Manor, and this gave me that same feel.

For me personally, I am rating this 3.5 stars but rounding up to 4 on Goodreads. It was so close to a 4-star read for me. I really enjoyed the overall story, the mystery was intriguing and kept you wondering, but I wasn’t as drawn to the romance as in other similar reads. I also wished we had some faith content here, but it was an overall clean regency, historical romance.

I feel like we have some great Jane Austen, Julie Klassen, and Agatha Christie vibes throughout this story! Loved the descriptions of the area, the ballroom and throughout Avonthrope Hall. I was loving searching and finding all the clues and putting the pieces together for the mystery. Phoebe and Graham working together were great and while I wasn’t as involved in their romance story – I do agree with other reviewers that we have some great Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy vibes with this couple!

I liked our main character of Phoebe the most, she struggles with regret of making past mistakes – she seemed like such a realistic and relatable character.

Overall, enjoyable regency read and will definitely be picking up more of Abigail Wilson’s books in the future.

#BookRevew: WITHIN THESE GILDED HALLS by Abigail Wilson

I enjoyed the Masquerade at Middlecrest Abbey so much that I didn’t want it to end. This book happened about two years later and focused on Phoebe. She was the youngest daughter of Lord Torrington. She loved art and was good at it.

The story was slow at first with Phoebe’s peaceful stay at Avonthorpe. I would like to see the ballroom where she helped restore. The descriptions were good with all the intricate details. The arrival of Lt. Graham Burke stirred things up and then Miss Drake was murdered.

I enjoyed unravelling the clues. It was quite a journey. There were so many numbers to figure out and late night meet ups. The mystery and suspense kept me on my toes. Countless unexpected things happened like Phoebe’s past catching up with her. I didn’t understand Phoebe’s feelings at first. I wanted to give her a long talk about it. But the revelation and the scene at the beach were shocking.

The enemies to lovers' romance was slow and sweet. They had different personalities and upbringing but Phoebe and Graham could work well together. I liked their easy communication. I enjoyed the change in Graham.

This was another charming and mysterious story that regency readers will surely enjoy.I can’t wait to read the next book by this author.

Thanks to NetGalley & Thomas Nelson for an eARC of this book. The following review is my honest reflection on the text provided.

Now, I am all for a Regency romance - I find them easy to escape into with the repressed emotions, unrequited love, and misunderstandings over accidental eavesdropping - it's all great. And while Within These Gilded Halls has a lot of this, it gets a little muddled with the addition of the murder mystery and treasure hunt.

And after quite a meandering narrative for most of the book, a lot happens in the last 25% that wasn't particularly unexpected. All of the twists and surprises happened at the end, although I don't think it was supposed to feel like that. Because there was so much going on, Phoebe and Graham would get excited to tell each other about one development but then get distracted by another aspect of the story - 'hey, I found the next clue in the treasure hunt, oh wow you're carrying a pistol, yes I'm worried about your safety with a killer on the loose do you know how to shoot? Quick shooting demonstration, oh he's so close to me, oh yeah, I have feelings for him - oh yeah, forgot about the treasure hunt clue I was going to tell you about.' That's not me being hyperbolic, it's a synopsis of an actual scene in the book.

The characters are interesting, but there's little growth or development. Most of them are as they appear, yet Phoebe always seems so surprised when someone she didn't trust does something untrustworthy. Besides this, I couldn't get behind the romance - while it wasn't instalove, it went from zero to a hundred very quickly.

Within These Gilded Halls didn't entirely transport me to the regency era, and the narrative was a little messy, leading to an overall average read.

Within These Gilded Halls by Abigail Wilson is a Regency romance and mystery that is a stand alone novel though I recognized a few characters from past novels. I am a huge fan of Abigail Wilson, and I have been anxiously waiting to read Within These Gilded Halls. In our story Phoebe Radcliff is currently working with Miss Drake, a renowned painter, to complete a ballroom renovation at Avonthorpe Hall. Lt. Graham Burke, Miss Drake’s nephew, will inherit the house and has come to visit.

I felt the story had a perfect blend of romance and mystery. I enjoyed following Phoebe and Lt. Burke’s love story as they searched for hidden treasure and solved a murder. There were many great secondary characters who kept me wondering who was the murderer, who was innocent and who was truly on team Phoebe/Graham. I stayed up too late reading the ending and have no regrets!

The story had themes of redemption, forgiving yourself, and remembering people are not always who they seem. I highly recommend this Within These Gilded Halls.

For some reason I never connected Phoebe with Lord Torrington of Masquerade at Middlecrest, which I assure you I did read so when I finally connected the dots, I got really excited.

For the same reasons I didn't fully enjoy Middlecrest, I couldn't quite get into this book. The main issue is that because we only get one POV and in first-person, there are certain subplots that get left hanging. I won't say more because of spoilers, but when I turned to the last page I said, 'wait what? We're already at the end?' However, Abigail's writing is both entertaining and poetic.

I did think Phoebe was incredibly naive to not doubt a single person the entire novel, especially concerning the betrayal in her past. It didn't quite ring true.

I loved the allusions to Jane Austen and I can definitely see where the comparison to Darcy and Elizabeth come in. The vivid descriptions drew me in and I felt like I was personally walking the halls of Avonthorpe. I really enjoyed Phoebe and Lt. Burke's interactions and how they played off each other. I didn't really get the enemies-to-lovers vibe some people were saying.

Whew! My head is still spinning after finishing this book. In one book you get a romance, a murderer, a thief, a spy, a smuggler, revenge, treason, blackmail, treasure hunts, and a really strange household where deep dark secrets reside. Yes, it is very busy! It is also fast-paced, well-written, interesting, and filled with characters you either want to get to know better – or you want to slap them (or worse). The main focus of the story is the mystery, but the romance dovetails nicely into it. Those of you who like steamy romances will be disappointed because there is no steam, but there is a very honorable hero who treats his lady with trust, honor, and respect. I say that is a well done.

Phoebe Radcliff, a gifted artist, is the daughter of Lord Torrington who is a spymaster. She left home in disgrace two years ago and is now studying under the tutelage of a renowned artist, Miss Drake. Phoebe and her friend Daniel are making good progress on their art project, but she’s not so focused that she doesn’t wonder about some of the goings-on. Why are Mr. and Mrs. Fagean there as permanent guests? They are odd people and Mr. Fagean is practically running the estate.

Lt. Graham Burke unexpectedly arrives at his aunt’s home with a load of antiquities he plans to sell to a neighbor and isn’t exactly welcomed with open arms. When his aunt, Miss Drake, is murdered things really start popping. The weapon used would tend to implicate Graham, but he loves his aunt. As she lay dying, she whispered a final message to Phoebe and that sets off a major treasure hunt.

Graham and Phoebe are trying to solve the riddles that will lead them to the treasure and solve Miss Drake’s murder at the same time. Are the two things connected? What about the strange behavior of Mr. and Mrs. Fagean? Daniel is also acting strangely. Secrets – secrets-within-secrets – how will they ever untangle this can of worms?

I thoroughly enjoyed the story, but I would have liked it just as well (or better) if some of the sub-plots were left out. It was just a very busy book. There was some very modern phraseology – like “How is that working for you”, but other than that it was a great mystery and a sweet love story combined. Goodness – I don’t think you can go wrong with that. The story also alluded to Phoebe’s parentage a couple of times, but never really finished it – so why include it at all?

I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

“If only we could all see the world through curiosity and hope.”
Ms. Wilson has taken my two favorite genres, historical and mystery, and woven them into a fascinating story including a treasure hunt. Her beautifully poetic style draws you into the story. “The fickle sun peeked in and out of a cloudy sky, commanding the tiny water crystals on the ground to sparkle.”
We met Phoebe Radcliff in the previous Masquerade at Middlecrest Abbey, a daughter of Lord Torrington. After some unpleasantness there, Phoebe decides to study painting under Miss Drake at Avonthorpe. When the great-nephew of Miss Drake descends on the estate to conduct business in antiquities, suspicious things begin to happen, including murder. A dying wish has Phoebe and Lt. Graham Burke puzzling out clues to find a vast treasure. The search would prove their loyalty, their mettle and their motives. Lots of interesting characters and suspects to ponder. There is an underlying Christian World View with the main characters subtly acting out their faith.
This was a superbly plotted book that has me wanting more. Dare we hope for a story about sister Julianna?

Okay let me start by saying that I didn't realize I should have read "Masquerade at Middlecrest Abbey" first. Technically, yes, this reads like a standalone, and I wasn't ever too confused by what was happening, but it referenced a lot of the events of that novel (I'm assuming it's that one, judging by the synopsis).

That being said, I enjoyed myself thoroughly with this book. It's a romance, and then it's a mystery, where I usually read books that are the other way around. So while I did mostly guess the mystery's conclusion (although, tbh, I was suspicious of everybody), it was still a pretty great puzzle! I did enjoy watching Phoebe and Graham fall in love, and while it seemed to move fast, I signed up for a historical romance, so it's not a surprise, haha!

Four stars for this one from me!

Mystery that is brimming with intrigue and atmosphere. Within These Gilded Halls delivered a plot that was mysterious and kept me guessing until the very conclusion! This story unfolds but by bit, drawing the reader in to a plot layered with danger, deceit, and one very intriguing treasure hunt. It was exciting to journey along with Phoebe and Graham as they uncovered each clue, all the while not knowing who they could trust. Honestly, I would have tossed all of the house guests out after the murder, bc they all seemed quite sketchy! So many things came together to culminate into a very intense and shocking conclusion! It was definitely worth the wait! I also love a good happily every after.

A stupendous Regency histfic tale with clues galore but a mystery I could not guess, and an endearing romance between Phoebe (who's updating the ballroom of her art teacher, Miss Drake), and Lt. Graham (who helps her investigate Drake's death.) I've not read author Abigail Wilson's mysteries before, but after this gripping story, her novels are now must-reads for me. Highly recommended!

I love Regency and this author always garners my attention with a slight gothic feel which somehow segues well with a murder and romance. That’s quite a curious combination, but it works beautifully for Ms. Wilson from the start to the fantastic finish. I find that her characters always have plenty of depth and are very relatable even though the era is different and social situations are a far cry from what they are today. I enjoyed the challenge of the word puzzles in the treasure hunt, but of course I didn’t figure any of them out. Phoebe and Lt. Graham Burke also have the burden of trying to solve the murder of Phoebe’s mentor, Miss Drake. I appreciated the inspirational thread in this novel, but I have to admit that it was light.

I have read and thoroughly enjoyed every book the author has published. This book can be read completely as a stand-alone, although it does have very loose ties with Masquerade at Middlecrest Abbey. if you are a stickler for detail, then you may want to read these in order but the connection is subtle. Ms. Wilson has five other books in her backlist and I highly recommend them all.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher and I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. If you're looking for a story with some mystery, intrigue, murder, secrets, a hidden treasure, a sweet love story and more, this one fits that bill!

I've enjoyed the books I've read from this author and the way she weaves together a story of suspense and mystery. When the reveal was happening, I kept thinking back to all the clues that suddenly stood out. Read carefully because there are clues all around but if you become caught up in the story, you might miss some of them. But it was definitely an enjoyable story with characters that aren't all what they seem.

I'm looking forward to more books from this author. I really like how all of her books are stand alone novels but some of the characters crossover or have some sort of connection to other books. It was fun to see how they connected in this book. If you've read this author's previous books you'll have fun making the connection.

Content: Clean. Murder and mayhem and mystery and suspense. There is a love story but it is sweet and clean.

Happy Reading!!!

Love Abigail Wilson’s books! She perfectly blends clean romance, mystery, political intrigue, and character growth with a faith-filled message, all in a Regency setting. It’s a slow burn romance with characters who go from enemies to friends to more. The plot revolves around a hidden treasure with intricate clues and a murder. There are plenty of suspects with various motivations and just when you think you’ve figured things out, another piece of the puzzle is added.

Phoebe Radcliff is talented, caring, and a bit impetuous. She’s made mistakes in her past which she readily regrets. She’s come to Avonthorpe Hall by invitation from her mentor Miss Drake to renovate the ballroom. Assisting her is her childhood friend Daniel. When Miss Drake’s nephew arrives with Egyptian artifacts, Phoebe is intrigued by him but quickly finds herself at odds with the stuffy Lt. Graham Burke. When Miss Drake is murdered and with her dying breath hints to a clue to a hidden treasure, Phoebe must decide whom to trust in a household of suspects. No one is as they seem and someone else seems to know about the treasure and will do anything to get it.

Told from Phoebe’s perspective, this book was the perfect mystery where each conversation and observation offers another clue. I loved the way Phoebe and Graham start off as enemies, then realize they really need each other and have a lot in common. Both have instances in the past where the people they trusted most let them down. As their romance grows, it’s fun to see the very proper Graham open up. I loved the scene where Phoebe assumes the worst only to find out he is having a sweet conversation with his dog. Their romance reminds me a bit of Pride and Prejudice.

The mystery was completely engaging. Though things started off a bit slow, the tension and suspense ratchet up especially towards the end. It’s a race against time where Phoebe and Graham are trying to find the treasure before anyone else and also solve the murder. Everyone at one point is a suspect with several people hiding behind a facade. Even those closest to Phoebe are suspects. It’s hard to know whom to trust. There’s also a complication from Phoebe’s past that threatens her tenuous relationship with Graham.

I also enjoyed the subtle messages of faith, trusting in God, and forgiveness especially of oneself woven into the story. It’s a must read for inspirational Regency mystery readers. Highly recommend! This book is a standalone, but those familiar with Ms. Wilson’s works will recognize characters from previous books. I received an advanced complimentary copy from the publisher through NetGalley. All opinions are my own and I was not required to provide a positive review.

Phoebe Radcliff's quiet existence as a young painter trying to escape her past takes a turn when her tutor is murdered and asks Phoebe to complete a treasure hunt to find the hidden jewels before the murderer can get to them. With clues hundreds of years old and hidden all over the estate, Phoebe races against unknown foes in the present as well as the return of foes from the past.

This book confused me from the beginning. It felt like I was dropped into the story and was somehow supposed to know these characters and their relationships to each other already. I was also annoyed at how Phoebe "solved" many of the clues by overhearing the most random things. The romance was lackluster for me, probably because I never came to care for any of the characters individually, much less how they interacted with each other.

I will be the first to admit that treasure hunts are a trope that I really don't enjoy, and mysteries in general are hit and miss for me, but if these are your thing, you'll probably enjoy this book much more than I did. I normally love Abigail Wilson's books and will definitely read more in the future. If you are a fan of gothic Regency stories, don't let my lackluster review stop you from checking this one out.

Gothic regency romance!

I wondered where this was going and was prepared for the insipid. But curiously, as I delved deeper, I was given the story of a young woman, Phoebe Radcliffe, daughter of the spymaster Lord Torrington, foolishly thought herself in love with a seductive Frenchman, an enemy of the state. After all this is the time of the Napoleonic Wars. When her girlish infatuation was revealed she fled to the Avonthorpe Manor to work for the renowned artist Miss Sally Drake, refurbishing a painted ballroom. Her lifelong friend Daniel accompanies her.
It is a strange house she’s come into. There’s some dodgy personalities, but she has a companion to chaperone her, the friendship of the Butler and her joy with her work.
That is until murder raises its foul head. Miss Drake is dead and her nephew the uptight Lt. Graham Burke rides into the household.
That’s not all, there’s treasure to be had and the dying Miss Drake gives Phoebe the clue. Now she finds herself joining forces with the Lt. Burke in the chase.
This enemy to lovers story is complex, intriguing, dangerous, and made more so when Phoebe’s past raises its head.

What a comforting read. A delightful mystery, great character development, and a charming romance.
I have read one other Abigail Wilson and thoroughly enjoyed it. I can’t say which is my favorite, but I did really like this one. I love the riddles and clues. The romance was easy for me to get behind because of Lt. Burke (quite charming). Phoebe could test my patience, but I loved the closure for her. The ending was a bit much, but I still think this was good. If you’re looking for a simple recently mystery romance, I think this was great. I will mention there is little to no faith content, but still extremely clean.

Content: minor violence (lightly-semi detailed), mentions of trysts (lightly detailed, often with guilt afterwards), kissing and romance content (lightly-barely semi detailed)

Abigail Wilson brings her readers another intricately woven mystery set in Regency England. Searching for a treasure that has remained hidden for many years is sure to keep the reader interested. Especially when you add in many who are up to no good at all. Well done!

My thanks to Thomas Nelson Publishing for a copy of this book via Net Galley. The opinions in this review are expressly my own.

This was a fantastic read for me. I loved reconnecting with characters from Abigail's earlier novel "Masquerade at Middlecrest Abbey." The mystery within the pages of this novel was just as compelling. A murder, a treasure hunt and the developing relationship between Phoebe and Graham made for a wonderfully immersive tale. I really loved this book!

I received this book from the publisher but also purchased my own Audible copy. All thoughts are my own.

I enjoyed the story but the beginning is quite meandering. Most of the action picked at the last third.

There's a lot going on, including a murder mystery, political intrigue and illegal dealings, a treasure hunt, and personal/family problems in the mix. There's also a slow romance between Phoebe and Graham. We only get Phoebe's POV and I would have liked to also read Graham's.

Overall, it kept me interested and reading to the see conclusion.

I received a copy from the publisher via NetGalley and this is my honest opinion.

After studying art under Miss Drake, a renowned painter, Phoebe Radcliff daughter of Lord Torrington is certain she can finally move beyond the childish mistake that’s kept her away from home. She is thrilled when Miss Drake employs her to complete a complicated ballroom renovation at Avonthorpe Hall. Everything changes, however, the moment Miss Drake is murdered. With her last breath she imparts the location of a clue to Phoebe. Phoebe is tasked to finish her work in the ballroom by Miss Drake’s infuriatingly regimented yet all-too-handsome nephew, Lt. Graham Burke. Phoebe also works to uncover the truth about Miss Drake’s death and she must do so before Graham leases the house.
An intriguing read, which I felt was more mystery than romance. I really liked both Phoebe & Graham & enjoyed their slow burn romance. I also enjoyed the mystery & the treasure hunt. There was a lot going on in the book so it is fast paced & it kept my interest all the way through. The characters whether you love them or hate them have depth
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

This one was scrumptious! I loved the intense ride and the carefully layered mystery, along with the Gothic feel of the secrets in the story. There's an artist, a forbidden romance, a stack of clues in riddle format, hidden treasure, and much more! Plus enough suspects to keep me guessing the whole way through.

Bottom line is, Abigail Wilson has crafted another perfect mystery novel and I can't wait for her next one!
