"Whatever you are feeling, God can handle it--all of it. The tears, screams, and questions. God invites you to let Him tend to your heart."
In the bluegrass fields of Kentucky, Anne Wilson and her siblings, Jacob and Elizabeth, grew up in the security and love of their family--and Jesus. But when Jacob died in a car accident, Anne was thrust into a painful journey of grief and soul-wrestling that led to God calling her to create songs that glorified Him.
My Jesus weaves together Anne's personal story with an encouraging message to anyone longing for God to wipe away their tears.
No matter what season of life you're facing, My Jesus comes alongside you to:
Show how God can bring purpose out of loss Offer hope in the midst of heartbreak Remind you that God never abandons you Discover the beauty that can emerge from suffering as you read Anne's story of growing closer to the God who always makes a way.
Praise for My Jesus:
"I love how Anne Wilson invites us into the cracks and crevices of her life and how she built her life on Jesus. My Jesus is personal, and it takes you on a journey through some of the most foundational parts of Anne's life that develop into a large picture where it is so clear that God was the artist of it all. As I read through each page, I felt like I was at coffee with Anne, hearing her story."
--Sadie Robertson Huff, author, speaker, and founder of Live Original
"The song 'My Jesus' has impacted so many of our lives in such important ways. Reading this book, being in the moments with Anne and her family, and hearing her faith rise up when her heart was broken, Anne has told a true and deep story that we all need to read."
--Annie F. Downs, New York Times bestselling author of That Sounds Fun
I just finished this book and I still have conflicting emotions about it. I give Anne Wilson a lot of credit to share her heartbreaking story about losing her older brother, Jacob. This is not an easy book to read and you'll need to keep the Kleenex handy. It's brutally honest in the way it's written. Anne shares her deepest thoughts, prayers and gut wrenching emotions with us and doesn't hold back. She is the youngest of 3 children, Jacob, Elizabeth and then her. Her family is Christian with a strong faith in God. Very supportive of each other and very close with each other. That's what I can relate to! I'm from a Christian family that has a strong faith and trust in God, I'm the youngest of 5 ( 3 brothers and a sister) and we're all close and supportive of each other.
Maybe I read this book too soon after my oldest brother passed away unexpectedly on January 27, 2023. My family and I are still struggling with John's passing away. What helped me the most besides my strong faith in Jesus, was my siblings and I got together to celebrate John's Birthday Celebration Dinner and we're going to make October 14 ( his birthday) an annual event! Of course my family and friends are continuing to pray for me and help me through and I want to thank all of you for your prayers and understanding!! Some days are better than others. Maybe it is because a lot of this book is redundant and I found myself flipping through the pages just to get it read. I heard the beautiful song, " My Jesus" in church quite a few times and I love it! ( I don't like the video because the song is uplifting and the video is depressing!). I've Googled up the song and played it on my cell a lot, especially while reading this book. I couldn't find how this book by the same title of the song connected until the second to last chapter. Something is missing from this story and I can't quite pinpoint it. Anne shares her family's deepest thoughts and heart aches as well as her own. Five years have passed since Anne's brother passed away unexpectedly at age 23, she was 15 at the time. I really appreciate her honesty in this book and so happy that she found the strength to write it! If you are suffering from the loss of a loved one, I would recommend listening to the song " My Jesus" and the beautiful song " Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus" ( personally I love Alan Jacksons version) and read this very emotional book whenever you are able to begin to deal with your own emotions. It'll bring up emotions that you thought you've dealt with and bring them back to re- live again. I shed many tears while reading it.
Firstly I would like to say that prior to Audible I loved the printed edition of memoirs/autobiographies. Because pictures. But then Audible comes along giving me books narrated by the author. I’m a sucker for a self-narrated book. This was one of those. Anne narrates her own tragedy to triumph story.
Are you familiar with Anne? She lost her brother when she was younger. She, from that tragedy, changed the trajectory of her life to that of Christian music.
Having already been familiar with her story through various interviews, I wondered if I’d still enjoy her book. Why yes, yes I did. Very much.
This book was so incredibly moving. I cried so much listening to Anne’s pain.
With a fresh new sound that somehow captures the Truth of the Ages, the song My Jesus has also captured the hearts of many. Now the story behind the song … From the tragic loss of her brother that inspired Anne to deepen her faith, she tells all that went into her processing her grief and pivoting her whole life when a video of her singing at his funeral found its way to Nashville. As a fan of country music, I enjoyed this look behind the scenes!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publishing team for sending me an ARC. The following review contains my honest thoughts.
Like many others, I first learned about Anne Wilson through her song "My Jesus." It quickly became a favorite, in my household, as did the rest of her album. Never could I imagine what Anne went through that led to her album/success.
Anne lost her older brother, and it absolutely devastated her family. Unsurprisingly, it took years for the family to grieve and move forward, in their lives. I really appreciate Anne putting her heartbreak and pain, on display, in this book. It felt like I was sitting with her, as she described her grief and what she did to move along. I admire her strength and faith during that tumultuous time.
The story flowed really well and was a captivating read. However, there was one qualm I had with this book, and it really affected my opinion of the story. I try not to judge anyone's faith and relationship with Jesus, but when you put it out there, you are opening yourself up to different opinions.
Multiple times, Anne describes different visions that, according to her, were from God. Furthermore, there were a number of instances that Anne talks about different prophecies that either she or her family had, that again, she claimed were from God.
For someone that is a new believer or isn't even a follower of Christ, these visions and prophecies are incredibly dangerous. A relationship with Christ is not transactional. When you are in financial distress, God will not send you a dream that tells you about the exact date in which you will receive the exact amount needed to get out of your financial troubles. That is not how prayer works. That is not how a relationship with Christ works. To put multiple instances of this in her story, Anne is perpetuating an incredibly dangerous false narrative of what having a relationship with Jesus is like. I understand that her family was under incredible stress, and I do not even want to imagine the amount of pain they were in. But that does not excuse putting out this false narrative of what Jesus can do - He is not a genie in the bottle, waiting to grant your three wishes.
Overall, the book was an interesting read. And it did help me relate more to Anne and her struggles. But I am hesitant to recommend it to anyone because of the false theology presented.
If you remember back in April, I wrote a review about the amazing talent of Ms. Anne Wilson and how she brings her own unique style to worshipping God. This very young lady shared her musical gift in the last review with a musical concert featuring her #1 song, My Jesus.
After this single became so popular, because it blessed so many listeners, Anne wrote the book My Jesus: From Heartache to Hope, When I saw that I would review this book, I didn’t know what to expect. But from the first page, I was drawn in. This young lady was tuned in to God. Her family was very close and she and her older brother were close. As her family went into shock with the unexpected death of their beloved Jacob, she made us another member of her family. I felt like I was right there with her in her grief.
As God walks with her through the darkest of days, he’s also guiding her into her chosen place that He has for her. In one miracle after another, God shows her His will and gently takes here where she needs to be.
This book is an easy read, but it’s also a book of deep theological truth. I recommend the book to everyone, though I would give a trigger warning concerning grief. It’s perfect for someone who is grieving, but they need to know before starting the book.

WOW! What an emotional and faith charged journey. Anne lays it all out on the line with her faith in Jesus, her brother's death, and her journey in grief and the start to her God honoring singing break through. A must read!
My Jesus is the Powerful testimony of Anne Wilson and her family. After the loss of her brother Jacob she started to feel the call of God in her life for Worship Music.
Despite her brother's passing she cling to God with her family and God use their heartbreak to open doors for her and become a Christian artist. Her story shows you how much God is close to the brokenhearted and how he can restore lives. God brought her closer to him, comforted her and lead her into ministry. He uses our pain to help others. Anne Wilson has a beautiful heart for the Lord, and I really like her album My Jesus an invitation to see that we are his and He is our Jesus. Even if it's heartbreaking, we see the kindness and the love of God in her story.
I received a copy of this book and this is an honest review.
This was an excellent book that I thoroughly enjoyed. I knew of Anne Wilson, but I went into this story blind, not knowing her story. Anne shares her journey of grief and heartache and how she found hope and healing in Jesus.
I listened to the audiobook and loved it because Anne narrates it herself. Anne’s story is real and relatable, with the focus on the grief of losing her brother. Through her story, you really see how Jesus worked in her and her family’s lives. It was beautiful to see how God used something so hard in Anne’s life as a ministry for the world.
I loved hearing her memories of her brother and family, and her honesty about her struggles with loss. She shares how God guided her from wanting to be an astronaut and go to space to becoming the amazing singer and songwriter she is today.
I was left encouraged by Anne and her family's faithfulness and love for the Lord, and I think you will too! ✨
After reading My Jesus for myself I feel I can offer some content considerations.
The book is full of raw emotions as it shares about when they found out her brother died, going to the scene of the accident, the funeral, burial along with holidays without him. Each family member had different reactions and those are shared. The family relied on the fullness of their intimate Father God throughout the whole situation. There was moments of prayers, hearing God speak to them, impressions of what to do along with visions shared by others. There was blunt moment when all of her family was struggling and the comment of let’s just drive off this bridge and be with Jacob. The whole book was raw with grief but the hope and good moments that came about because of having to step out during the season of the death of Jacob. Anne shares that she went to counseling and recommend that others should too.
I truly think the book will ministry to many but I want people (parents) to know that My Jesus is full of raw and heavy emotions and moments. Please use caution when reading this book - am I ready to see a family go through this grief.
I have been a fan of Anne Wilson and her music, especially her song "My Jesus" for awhile, and I'm so glad I finally read her book! Just like in her comforting, rootsy, and honest song lyrics, Anne's heart of pure faith in Jesus amidst loss and pain really shine through in this book and offer boundless amounts of encouragement, hope, and warmth as she shares her ongoing journey with Jesus after the loss of her brother. It was easy to see the hand of God in Anne's story, and I was reminded of His love and perfect timing in my story as well. The way each chapter was completed with a heartfelt note from Anne and a Scripture passage gave this a devotional-like quality and a very personable and conversational feel. I highly recommend this to anyone who needs to be reminded of God's unwavering love, constancy, and purpose in times of chaos and heartache, especially if you love Anne and her music like I do! You will cry, mourn, and worship right alongside Anne as you are brought to reflect on God's presence in your own trials.
Phenomenal! An inspiring, poignant story of Christian singer-songwriter Anne Wilson's journey "From Heartache to Hope" through the loss of her beloved older brother, Jacob, and how the Lord is always working all things together for our good and His glory, whether we realize it or not. At the end of each chapter is "A Note from Anne," which offers deeper reflection such as that which one would find in a devotional, and a quotation from Scripture. If you've ever experienced grief or trauma, or if you're just looking for an uplifting personal story, "My Jesus" is a must-read, and even more importantly, truly get to know my Jesus!
A very emotional memoir about how grief transformed her faith and how and why she became a singer/songwriter to especially her most popular and personal song, “My Jesus”. I was encouraged and inspired by her testimony!
I wanted to read this book because I’ve been struggling with my own grief journey for 7 months now. Her grief journey is a dif type of grief than mine but this book still spoke to me in so many ways. Throughout the last 7 months my relationship with God has been pretty distant and I have struggled in seeing the good that could possibly come out of my situation. This book helped to renew my faith in the Lord and reminded me of how real and good he is. I cried in every single chapter so make sure you’re prepared for those emotions but I would highly recommend this book.
A beautiful and moving story about how tragedy changed the course of Anne’s life. If you haven’t listened to the song My Jesus, you should give it a listen; it adds even more depth to her story.

Anne Wilson is amazing. You feel her pain and the comfort she finds in Jesus. All have had a loss in one way or another. May everyone find the comfort that Anne found and is still finding every day.
Even if you’re not experiencing loss or grief in your current season of life, this book is worth reading! I’m blown away at Anne’s maturity and steadfast faith in God. I want to say that I don’t know how she managed to get through the tragedy of losing her brother, but I actually know that it was her faith in God and commitment to her strong Christian values that kept her moving forward to experience God’s plans for her. I loved reading about how she started singing and writing music. Her story is incredible and such an act of God. God is good!
My Jesus is everything I thought it would be. What a beautiful testimony!
Earlier this year I reviewed (and loved) a music CD by Anne Wilson and especially loved her original song with the same title, My Jesus. Anne reveals the inspiration for that song in this book. She tells her story of personal loss and how Jesus guided her through heartbreak into hope.
Tissues, please!
Anne had a firm Christian footing when she lost her brother. So did her family. But they all struggled with so many emotions and each dealt with the loss in their own way. But hope, healing, and glory from above brought them through the shadows of pain.
If you’ve recently struggled with loss, don’t avoid reading this book. Just know before opening it that you will feel the raw sorrow, but you’ll also feel hope, experience healing, and become inspired.
I love that Anne heard God’s will and is sharing Jesus with others through her music, and through her story.

Wow! What a testimony Anne Wilson has! She showed how God took her grief and turned it into a ministry to reach millions telling of His goodness, grace, mercy and love. I felt like I was walking her journey right beside her. I have walked that road but never allowed myself to be so vulnerable as she has been. She shared raw emotions all the while praising Jesus through it all. If you weren't a Christian before reading this, I don't see how you can't be after reading it. Have plenty of Kleenex handy.
an incredible story and book! Definitely made me appreciate and love her music even more!!! I would recommend this to anyone that has dealt with grief either through their family or friends. What a powerful message that “He makes a way where there ain’t no way” and to tell everyone about “My Jesus and let my Jesus change your life!”
Those lyrics are from “My Jesus”. And you should definitely listen to her music while reading this book!
I don’t often say a book speaks to me, but reading her journey through grief and how she followed Jesus, putting her faith first, truly did, especially as someone who’s also lost a sibling. Her story is inspiring and incredible and I truly want to work to have faith like her.
I normally don’t rate memoirs, but this one broke something in me and therefore it gets 5⭐️s! I laughed, I cried, I wept! I yearned for the peace she speaks of!
I loved reading about Anne Wilson's testimony and her musical journey. ♡ Honestly the writing wasn't the best, but she's a singer. I'm not expecting her to be an author. Reading about her journey reminded me that God has a purpose for all of us, even if it doesn't feel like it.
May our Lord Jesus Christ Himself and God our Father, who has loved us and given us eternal comfort and good hope by grace, comfort and strengthen your hearts in every good work and word. 2 Thessalonians 2:16-17
HIGHLY RECOMMEND this audiobook!!! It is by far the best audiobook I have ever listened to, I started and finished it in the same day (only 5 hours) because it is absolutely incredible. The audiobook is read by Anne herself and it is beautiful and devastating and holy and just inspiring. I cried during 95% of it. I loved it so much, I will absolutely be relistening to it in the future.
I enjoyed this title! I had no idea how Anne began her journey as a Christian music artist. Anne put so much of herself into this book, just like her music. I was touched by her love for her brother and her faith in the goodness of God, even when truly tragic things happen.
So good!! Her story is so amazing and inspiring and it is written from such a real perspective. The whole book is very genuine and I really liked it. It had me tearing up at parts. Really well written and a really great reminder!
Anne Wilson’s testimony in her new book, “My Jesus” is a heartfelt story of losing her big brother Jacob in a car accident. Anne grew up in Kentucky surrounded by a close family and church community.
Anne talks about the grief in her family. She is an open book sharing her life openly. She shares how each family member had a different reaction and grieving process. It is raw and each person had to rely on Jesus to get through it. They all thankfully had a close relationship with Jesus. At the same time they had moments of deep sorrow and Anne shares a very personal conversation during that deep sorrow of the family having shared and unspeakable moment of weakness about driving off a bridge to be with Jacob again.
After the funeral Ann decided to honor her brother by singing publicly for the first time. Jacob must have seen the gift that Anne has. She sang "What a Beautiful Name," Her family and friends convinced her to post a video of her singing the song. It was then that she felt God's calling her to create music to share with others and bring glory to God. Her powerful video caught the eye of a talent scout who introduced her to a music manager. Anne eventually signed with Capitol Christ Music Group. Her powerful song "My Jesus" was birthed.
Anne Wilson’s story will minister to many people. This book had me crying and rejoicing. I know when I lost my brother many years to a tragic event it was difficult and left me at times in a deep hole with my pain and grieve. While reading this book I saw that I still needed healing from 21 years ago that I had tucked away.
Anne Wilson shares her story of sorrow, faith, and triumph. No matter how dark it was Anne was a light in her family and too others. No matter what you are going through, you are never alone. Our hope comes from Jesus.
Thank you Anne for sharing your tragedy with the world and bringing forth one of the most powerful songs I have listen too. Not too many people can be real. Don’t ever stray from that passion and faith that you have in our Savior Jesus.
