Every god must battle a monster… The early morning dawn is shattered by a massive boom. A powerful new weapon threatens to tip the balance of the war in favor of the Red Legion. Kita is sent to destroy the superweapon before it can rain devastation on the war front and destroy her army. But the front is not the Angels' only battlefield... Snowy and Kita’s relationship is spinning out of control. Their once-solid foundation is cracking, made only more fragile by Kita’s attraction to Sarin. Snowy feels threatened but has a plan to shift the balance of power. Meanwhile, Kita and Sarin are trying to help Kita’s sister Tina, whose trauma is hampering her recovery and affecting her mental health. The problems don’t end at home… The Angels Katie and Anthrax have left Roost. But they find The Mass is unsafe and quickly discover you can’t go home again.

“Commander Kita, no other warrior is your equal. For the glory that is your name, I pledge my sword and life to you. I renounce all other loyalties. You are the personification of honor, glory, and valor. My sword is yours to command.” + • + • + • +
This time we got some very illuminating backstories in varied snippets that help fill in pieces of the picture & better understanding of the nuances, relevancies, intersections & decisions behind the different characters roles, actions, loyalties, purposes & rationale that's led up to all these present events. I can't wait to see how this Kita vs Cowboy war plays out next—particularly with Jeffrey & Snowy unknowingly getting played as side pieces or pawns in a much bigger game.
This book seemed like less of a novel and more of a collection of short stories told from various points of view. I think most of them were supposed to be happening around the same point in the timeline, apart from the first two. It was interesting to learn more about Katie and Anthrax, and about Sarin's relationship with Kita and Snowy. Sarin's interest in psychology makes it easier for her to understand Kita and her sociopathy. Loved the Arconian cultural traditions and Kita's spunky grandmother.
