Climbing the Spiral Staircase: How Women Can Navigate Their Careers and Accelerate Success by Leanne Meyer is a guide for women trying to advance in their careers while trying to both push through a glass ceiling and pry ourselves off of a sticky floor. While some see all the complications and argue that it’s better not to try, and others see the progress that women have made, think we’ve won already, and don’t need to try, Meyer encourages us to push. I like that she asks so many questions, getting us first to think about who we are and what is important to us, like our passion token, and then to understand our own downfalls. For example, there are people that have the opinions I’ve mentioned above, and those might be different than your own. But by asking questions and then questioning our reasons for believing so, Meyer unearths our own biases as well, which could be clouding our path to success. I like Meyer’s conversational tone and reflection points at the end of each chapter. This was a very thought provoking read.

Drawing from her own experience in fighting against societal expectations and pressure, Meyer provides examples and concrete advice on how to achieve one’s goals as a woman in spite of everything that is seemingly stacked against us. I found the book well written with emotive and connecting language. Meyer provides a blueprint for success and is very encouraging as an author. The only downside to me was her assumption that all women want to have careers and if they do not, are unhappy and trapped at home which in a way alienates women who choose and are happy in that role. Overall, it is a good book full of helpful information that anyone can benefit from reading.

I genuinely love this book. I know it is intended for women but I feel like it was also meant for minorities in the workplace. The general idea of taking charge of your goals applies to everyone; yes there are things that keep us in our place but what I have learned from this book is that it doesn't necessarily need to be that way. “The most common way people give up their power is by thinking they don’t have any.” I like how the author has used this as a reference. It is very empowering for me, knowing what I am worth and making sure that I fight for it and / or deserve it. It is easy to understand references that are really familiar to me and I guess most people are too. I recommend this book for self-improvement and confidence building.
Leanne Meyer is a psychologist and directs the Carnegie Mellon Women’s Executive Leadership Academy. In her book, Climbing the Spiral Staircase, she provides all her experience about leadership development and helps people discover their potential and to become the leaders they want to be. This book is pure empowerment. It has strategies and tools that can help us to improve our careers and reach success. One thing that I really value and appreciate is that the author promotes female empowerment throughout her words. While I hope that at some point these books will not be necessary, it can be very useful for women who are making their way in the world of work! I recommend it.
This book takes a look at the careers of women both in America and Globally and how our choices in career, motherhood, education and more affect our trajectory. The author is wellversed in the business world, much of what she advises was fantastic advice and I found the information to be very useful when I reenter the workforce soon. I found this book to be a wealth of information, it was extremely interesting to see the global comparisons and how we can better our workplaces here in America. What a great book to use as a woman in todays corporate world!
A very easy to follow book for women entering or returning to the work space. Unfortunately, It is really important to still have these materials to be like a guide in the process of the comeback. Women are not treated equally in business whatever the job may be, so having author Leanne Meyer share all this information is very valuable to the whole community.
I really like this concept of being intentional and believing in the potential women have to offer and not be standardized by others' opinions.
To sum up, "Climbing the Spiral Staircase" is a really good book to not lose authenticity trying to find our place.
