Mykhailo Mykhailovych Kotsiubynsky (Ukrainian: Михайло Михайлович Коцюбинський), (September 17, 1864 – April 25, 1913) was a Ukrainian author whose writings described typical Ukrainian life at the start of the 20th century. Kotsiubynsky's early stories were described as examples of ethnographic realism; in the years to come, with his style of writing becoming more and more sophisticated, he evolved into one of the most talented Ukrainian impressionist and modernist writers. During the Soviet period, Kotsiubynsky was honoured as a realist and a revolutionary democrat. A literary-memorial museum was opened in Vinnytsia in 1927 in the house where he was born.
About twenty novels were published during Kotsiubynsky's life. Several of them have been translated to other European languages.
This is a collection of fiction works, written in the 1890s-1910s by Mykhailo Kotsiubynsky. The main themes are social issues, psychology, and faraway happy places (Italy). The audio is very well narrated.
Contents: ДебютDebut while this is the first story here, actually it was one of the latest works, from 1913. It has an unusual light tone and tells a story of a young tutor bought by a well-to-do family for their 6-year son. They also have an older (in her 20s) daughter, very shy and a kind of prude. The tutor decides to play as if he is deeply in love with her, even if he actually despises her. СонA Dream a married couple, whose love dissipated, she tries to chat with him, but he prefers a silence. Once he tells her his dream about a sun-lit place (possibly in Italy) and a blond beauty here. The wife sees it as an affair, while he prefers dreams to actual life. Persona grata a prisoner who has been cruel since childhood (he hanged a cat just to check that he can), gets a new job with a personal room and obsequious guards. Now he is the executioner. However, after executing a young female political prisoner, he starts to think about why our world is unequal and who is guilty of it. Laugh a family of an advocate tries to hide in their house because the father was a revolutionary activist and there are counter-revolutionary black-hundredists on the streets. One thing, they have help, who also thinks they ought to be punished Цвіт яблуніApple-tree blossom a sad (autobiographic?) piece – a writer cannot find what to do, for his young daughter is dying from an illness and his consciousness split – as a father he grieves and as an author, he notes all his feelings for new work. A Duel a guy works as a tutor a young girl, whose mother writes him long love letters. Once, when he and this woman sat alone, a husband saw them thru the window and throws the tutor away. A romantic tutor decides to call the husband on a duel in a letter, but sent to the wife so that she stopped her husband… Glory to Life a traveler depicts Messina, the city in Sicily that was almost entirely destroyed by an earthquake in 1908, killing about 100,000 people and destroying most of the ancient architecture. However, the city was largely rebuilt in the following year, and this return to an ordinary life is depicted. На островіOn an Isle a writes lives in Sicily, loving its people and sunlight, falling in love with a stranger, or going fishing, days in the Paradise. На каменіOn a Rock one of his stories about Crimean Tatars. A Greek trader comes on his boat with a young handsome assistant, who falls in love with the young wife of a local much older tavern keeper. When the keeper finds out, lovers have to flee but there is no way to get out… Under Minarets two storylines, one of a young dervish, coming to town, another about an activist people teacher, who thinks that rigid Muslim traditions prevent modernization of Tatars. Tied by Shaitan a young Tatar girl, who should remain hidden from men outside, but who likes a handsome Tatar boy, who works as a guide for tourists, mostly modern women, who are able to go outside and even ride horses. Intermezzo initially a description of beautiful land around the narrator, as he walks across it with his dogs, that later shifts to the plight of peasants to toil on this land, but get almost nothing from its fruits.
