A world split by storm, frost, and fire. A young fire mage on the run, hunted by Shadow Knights, and carrying a stolen dragon…

Tiber's fire magic is both a gift and a curse, marking him for the wrath of a power-hungry emperor. Time is running out, and every moment brings the Shadows closer.

But when destiny pairs him with Luci—a girl cloaked in mysteries and wielding her own unique magic—they form an unbreakable bond. A bond only intensified by the dragon they hatch from a stolen egg.

As Tiber confronts the haunting Shadows of his past, he faces a dire choice: succumb to revenge or rise as the world's beacon of hope.

Firesight sweeps readers into a vivid realm where every page crackles with energy. Perfectly paced for young readers, yet rich enough for adults, it's the ideal book to share across generations.

I’ve always loved a good hero. Growing up, I played with Ninja Turtles as much as Barbie dolls. I had to be home in time to watch the Power Rangers every day, and I will forever be the Pink Ranger.

And then there were the books—so many good books. I loved getting lost in new worlds, and eventually, making up my own. I don’t think it can get better than that, except with a big mug of Community Coffee in my hand.

I grew up in Louisiana, so what other coffee brand is there? I still live in a small Cajun town with my husband and five children. I wake up early and write most mornings, then homeschool the kids. The rest of the day is open to shenanigans, and hopefully, I get some time to read.

Did I mention I drink a lot of coffee?

I always dreamed of being an author, and now that dream is happening with the publication of my first novel, Firesight. It’s a little hard to believe that I got to live in these characters’ heads, and now you do too!

My thanks to Booksirens for sending me a ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This book is good. But it could be great! The magic system is definitely different than any other fantasy series I have read before. This book has a lot of great things going for it. Firstly, the characters are fairly well developed and each have interesting, if somewhat lackluster backgrounds. Secondly, while the magic system is definitely different, it is interesting. And thirdly, dragons. You can't really go wrong with dragons. But this book could've been so much better if it was written for a slightly more mature audience. All of the fight scenes (and there are quite a few), felt somewhat boring and underdeveloped, because it felt as if the author was being deliberately careful not to make the fights seem too bloody and dangerous. If the fights would have been described more vividly and in more detail, it certainly would have improved things for me. Secondly, Izzy. As I said before, you can't really go wrong by adding dragons. But the author certainly could have done more to make Izzy more personable and relatable. She doesn't talk, and doesn't seem to be all that expressive. To be honest, even though the story was clearly meant to be about her, it felt like she was merely a very quite, and slightly annoying side character most of the time. The story would have read far better if Tiber and Izzy were the center of attention. Their bond, their growing relationship should have taken up far more pages than it did. And finally, I really can't stress enough how much I wish this book was written from a single POV. Tiber's. Multiple POVs can work some of the time. But in order for that to happen, the other POVs have to add something to the story. And that really wasn't the case with this book in my opinion. A single POV from Tiber's perspective would have allowed for a better plot, one focused where it belonged, on Tiber and Izzy.

In the end, this is a good book with some fun ideas and concepts. But I just feel like it focused on too many of the wrong things. But I am hopeful for the next book.

Very slow start and a bit predictable. Also couldn't figure out why the hyper fixation on the phantom fingers.

Overall a decent dragon fantasy story for YA.

A charming coming of age story, Firesight is rife with fascinating magic, worldbuilding and charming characters.

Tiber's magic is not only a little useless--it's dangerous. Living in the shadow of a tyrannical emperor, Tiber must hide his magic or risk his life, because anyone with the Spark tends to vanish at the hands of the emperor's Shadow Knights.
When Tiber steals from the wrong people and exposes his magic in the process, he's forced to flee with the very people he tried to steal from--and the newly-hatched dragon the emperor wants back.

Tiber is (for a thief) a caring, selfless young man. Luci is a bit more fiery(there's an irony in that :p ), but she's fiercely loyal to those she cares about.

The two of them are thrust on the path of rebellion--because if someone doesn't take down the emperor, the continent might not survive the Shadows.

It's a quick paced story, with flashes of humor and lovely glimpses of deeper, noblebright themes. I REALLY loved the magic system, and I look forward to finding out what happens next with out heroes.

I received an ARC, and I have left this review willingly.

DNF at 50%, the writing just left me wanting more. It wasn’t well edited and the dialogue felt scripted versus naturally flowing. The main character Tiber just did whatever he wanted regardless that he didn’t know what he was doing and often messed everything up making the storyline progress without progressing. Things that had an opportunity to be interesting or exciting were glanced over or mentioned once and that was just how it was. Decided this year if I didn’t like a book that I wasn’t going to waste my time so here I am following my own advice. I do think younger readers would like this like middle grade readers but otherwise I’m done with it.

This was a stunning fast paced YA adventure filled with mystery, action, drama and suspense.
It has elemental magic in the form's of frost, fire and lightning, dire stakes from evil forces, and a coming of age feel where the reluctant hero is forced into helping save the world and understand their powers and destiny.
With found family, magical allies, and dragons this is a gripping adventure that has you rooting for the characters and wanting them to succeed, as well as heartbreaking moments from betrayals and loss.

As an adult reader I found this was a gripping and enjoyable book that I finished in a day as I couldn't put it down. (My fav character Tiber)
My 10yr old niece also read a copy and said this was a fun adventure with cool dragons magic and fairies and it reminded her of Eragon and How to train your dragon. (Fav characters Luci & Izzy, least fav Vondra the grumpy fairy).
We're both excited to read the next book Frostsight and seeing the adventures continue (and hope to get a secret pet dragon too.)

YA book full of elemental magic with dragons and a rebellion against the empire means this is reminiscent of Fireborne for me but with less world building and history of the society. The dragons and their connections to their riders are still pivotal to the story. Norris writes found family and betrayals very well along with teens making believable mistakes. I'm eager to find out what happens next with the Dragon Guardians and how the world grows with more traveling across the map and more dragons. This series is a great reminder that dragon books can appeal to older readers without being infused with spice.

Jessica Dean Norris’ debut novel is a hit! The stakes are high, the danger is persistent, the dragons are awesome, the magic is unique and fun, and the characters feel real. Even as life got busy for me, I found this story to be something to look forward to at the end of my day. I also blame Firesight for keeping up a little too late some nights! It’s a hard-to-put-down book that’s full of adventure, discovery, magic and more. Highly recommend.

This was a great YA, coming of age fantasy! I really liked the magic system and the characters. Fast-paced as the 2 main characters find themselves in the middle of a dragon egg heist!
I'm always nervous jumping into a YA book, that it may be too "young" for me, but this story was a lot of fun for this adult audience. I also think this would be a great into to fantasy for a young reader!

4 Stars! This was a super fast read that I really enjoyed. I didn’t quite build the same connection with the characters like I did when I read Eragon but I also feel like this was just because the book was so short. The action was quick and kept you engaged, but I wish there was just a little more character and world building.

DNF @ 25%.

I definitely expected more out of this book. To be grabbed by 25% for sure. I do think there was promise in what I read, it just wasn’t grabbing me. This might be a good intro to fantasy for a younger crowd. Middle grade maybe.

This is a great new series. Tiber has been forced to work as a drudge to a greedy businessman after being orphaned as a child. He has been forced his whole life to hide his fire powers as the kingdom is governed by tyranny and under the brutality of shadow knights. His chance for a better life is upturned he accidentally hatches a fire dragon egg. This is a fascinating story of fantasy, politic intrigue, friendships and betrayal. Definitely worth a read for those who love fantasy and dragonlore. 4/5 stars

Firesight is Book 1 in The Dragon Guardian Chronicles by Jessica Deen Norris. This fantasy is excellent with so much action and a outstanding story. I liked the characters and I thought that Jessica Deen Norris did a terrific job of laying a foundation for the series. Luci stole from the Emperor Skardin and he sent Shadow Knights after Luci and friends. When Tiber stole from Luci, he had Luci, a fairy, Vondra, and friends after him. This group becomes bound by friendship and a desire to fight for Izzy. I can't wait for Book 2 to see what happens next. This is fantasy at its best! I received an arc for free and am leaving my review voluntarily.

#EpicFantasy #Thieves #Dragons #Darklords #OHMY!
Summary: Good, old-fashioned dragon epic. A small-time thief hatches a mysterious dragon egg, meets some new friends/enemies, and gets roped into conflict with the resident Dark Lord™.
Pros: Great magic system (having to do with sight… yes, just like the title suggests) and it had dragons (also like the title suggests).
What you see here is what you get—and I mean that in the best possible way. :)
Cons: The characters felt a bit generic and the emotions were more surface level, but they got the job done.
Conclusion: Solid debut and I look forward to seeing how this series continues to develop. Great for a teen/cleaner reader or anyone else who still loves stories like Eragon or How to Train Your Dragon.
I handed my paperback copy (that I got as one of my prizes from the Summer Challenge) to my dragon-loving sister and she also enjoyed it. :)

This book starts off with a lot of promise. There’s a lot going for it—but I found myself frustrated a tad too often. And maybe that’s because it’s meant for a younger audience—and the lead character Tiber reflects some of the foibles of his age group—but his poor decisions just piled too high for me. I wanted to grow to trust him…and I never did.

The cast is good, but I didn’t find any of them particularly likable. The magic system is unique. The writing is good, with tight grammar. The climax is explosive. I love the cover!

While the plot/setting is different, I got some Percy Jackson-ish vibes. Fans of that series, as well as Ranger’s Apprentice, will probably find this right up their alley.

A fun—and clean—read for teens and readers of teen fantasy!

Firesight by Jessica Deen Norris centers around Tiber who does not know his destiny and what he is capable of. In his urgency to escape from his dismal circumstances, he steals from those who he later aligns with not knowing what he has taken and its significance. As he travels with the Protectors, he discovers who he really is and begins to step into the person he is meant to be. Of course there are some challenges along the way as he tries to learn and grow. However, despite him not being brave per se, he’s limited in his beliefs in what is possible which threatens the well being of those around him.

As Tiber moves forward, stumbling about trying to find his way, can he deal with the gift that has been bestowed upon him? Can he make amends for the damage he has caused and do the right thing? Can he harness his abilities and stop blindly following a path that may not exist? Can the Protectors complete their mission?

The characters are well thought out and each ones personality shines through as you get to know them. As the story unravels, you can sense the emotions behind the characters actions that portray what may or may not happen. Some characters keep you guessing lending to an air of mystery surrounding their motives, while others are clear in their stance.

Within the pages of this fantasy novel, there is not only mysterious motives, but also magic factions based on abilities, dragons, and lore from days gone past. Follow along as Tiber chooses his path and see where it may lead him.

This novel is recommended to young adults and adults who enjoy fantasy of this nature. I think they will find it nicely written with clear vivid images of the fictional world built around the characters.

I rate this novel a 4 out of 5. It takes a while to figure out what the plot is suppose to be as well as the conflict that is revealed leaving you wondering what may happen next. It’s nicely written with the characters interwoven though the story. The way in which it is written is worth the read.

Enjoy and happy reading.

I received an copy of the book free for review. Mild spoilers ahead, but nothing that should impede your enjoyment of the book.

Pros:
-A very unique magic system. The magic is based on elemental magic, but with a twist that makes the system more interesting and definitely more difficult for the users to master. This makes the stakes feel higher, since there is a trick to being able to effectively wield the magic.

-The moral compass. I appreciate that there is a definite sense of right and wrong, and that there are real and sometimes devastating consequences for choosing wrong.

-Twist ending. An important side character isn't on the side we thought they'd be on at all. I was actually surprised!

-Solid characterization for the age group it's written for: the characters have some depth, but we don't spend so much time passively getting to know them that a younger reader would get bored. The main characters each have flaws, strengths, and grow along the story. There are several moments where characters are allowed to make difficult choices and come out better (or worse) for it. I have a particular fondness of slightly-prickly little Vondra.

-Totally clean. There are no questionable scenes that would concern me as a parent if I were to let my child read it, which is refreshing and relieving. I would say ages 9 and up would be a good target age group for this story, although it would be enjoyable by precocious younger readers as well, and was enjoyable for me as an adult. There are fighting scenes and some violence/death, but there is nothing graphic. A very sensitive kiddo might be bothered, but most probably would handle it fine.

Cons

-Nitpicky and a personal preference thing, but I'm not a fan of the name "Elongtra."

-The pacing felt very fast at times, like certain scenes didn't get the time they deserved. However, this is also probably a personal preference thing. It is probably perfect pacing for younger readers who are being introduced to high fantasy.

Overall, this was a fun read and I'm looking forward to Frostsight!

This was a fun YA coming of age adventure with fairies, dragons, magic, a hint of the beginning of a potential romance, all with secrets mixed in. I definitely felt the anxiety and anticipation along with these characters and am eager to see where their stories go in the sequel(s)!

Full review to come soon!

I really enjoyed Norris's Firesight! There was action and adventure, magic and dragons and fairies, and I appreciated that it remained clean throughout. While the high stakes remain, Norris created a believable world that I will be more than willing to recommend to some of my middle grade readers.

The main reason this wasn't a 4 star read for me is several places when I felt taken out of the deep third person point of view. The pacing was great - no chapter felt too long or too short for me. Also, I never felt as if we spent too much time on one event nor did it seem unbelievable when a character came to a realization.

I really enjoyed Tiber's chapters and I'm excited to see his growth continue in the sequels. Same for Luci. I am hoping to see more of the side characters in the sequels as well; however, Norris did an excellent job showcasing how these characters all worked together. Additionally, the descriptions almost always hit the exact right amount of detail.

The magic system that Norris presents is definitely unique. It's both powerful and extremely dangerous if/when misused.

I would recommend this novel to readers who enjoy the following:
-YA narrative
-Found family trope
-Dragons and fairies and humans working together
-A dash (literally just a dash) of romance
-Potentially dangerous secrets

NOTE: I received this ARC in exchange for my review.

As a former elementary school librarian and middle school teacher I think there is a lack of entry level/middle grade fantasy. This book fills that hole. (Yes, there's lots of middle grade and YA fantasy, but there has to be books that are a little simpler to help kids learn the tropes and get hooked. If it's too advanced, they will give up.) While accessible to young, new fantasy readers, the book was also surprising and engaging to myself as an avid fantasy, adult reader.

I loved how the training sessions were wrapped in mystery about whether he was doing it the right or wrong way --and no one really knew. I also appreciated the realistic internal struggles of each of the characters and that each person's choices were respected even if they were different choices.

I loved the disgruntled fairies! I also liked that Izzy communicated nonverbally and the mystery of communicating with her.

The characters seemed a little inconsistent in the beginning (although, of course, maybe I just didn't know them as well). For example, a character who is a loner with a hard life is beaten, and he seems to expect others to help him, even though I would have thought he'd expect to not be helped. However, after the first several chapters, the characters became more consistent. The young protagonists were always engaging and were given a lot of agency as well as oversight by their mentor --a nice balance not often seen by adults in middle grade books. I also loved how the adults has their own storylines and secrets as well, making the story feel fleshed out and natural.

Firesight is engaging because of its struggling, but sensible and opinionated protagonists as well as its fun worldbuilding discoveries.

For YA this is a great read. I like to read easy books. There was a part where it dragged on. I feel that the emperor really needed more substance. We really know nothing about him. He has no dialogue through the book yet he is supposed to be the villain.

Really nice adventure story and would recommend if you want an easy quick read. I will read again especially as my the littles in my life (grandkids) grow up and I can read this to them.

Will definitely read the other two books in the series. Crossing my fingers it moves as a faster pace.

Baby dragons just don’t get to participate in the wars but I would’ve liked this one to have been special. I was wanting to bond more with the dragon as a reader but that didn’t happen either. I was getting impatient for it to grow big enough to ride. And then a little disappointed that Tiber was g even the one who did most of the riding. All the supporting characters seem to ride the dragon more than Tiber got to. Would’ve liked more depth on the wars.

When someone dies it just like - they fell over. It’s almost hard to tell that they died. Would’ve liked more details on why their bodies just go lifeless. As a reader it takes away the emotions one should feel when a character dies. Harder to process it and feel for them. So I would’ve liked more to grasp onto during those times.

The prologue was amazing! And therefore, missed the mark to give more throughout the book to get to know the emperor. Because had we gotten more of him through the book, I think it would’ve been just what this book needed. It’s ok to write YA and have more to the villains too.

Overall, very nice read and a lot of times I couldn’t wait to read what was next. This was read for a family book club read and 99% of us really enjoyed this!

Ok, I am obsessed!
I’m living in my dragon era right now after Onyx Storm and this one did NOT disappoint!

This is a YA story about a boy who falls in with a group of rebels who are both trying to take down a corrupt ruler and also just survive. Tiber ( MMC ) is a young man who has lost everything and so when he sees a way out by stealing an important package he takes it, unbeknownst to him that he has now changed his entire life!!! Will it be for the better or worse?

This book was so good! It was action packed and I loved all of the characters!! You have actual fairies!! I mean don’t get me wrong… the hot fairies ( cough cough Cassian… Azrel ) well they are great too but there is something about the cute chunky like garden gnome fairies that make my heart happy!!! We have dragons of course!! And yall…. There is a full blown baby dragon!!! Like through out the entire book you get to see her grow and change and all the things and Omgosh!!!! 😍😍😍😍
You have magic of course but this magic system is unlike any I have read so far… it’s fire, storm, and frost magic…which I have seen but the way they access and use it is so unique and I loved learning about it!!!

The world building in this book was beautifully done! I was immersed in this world and could vividly picture every setting!

I am so thankful that I was able to read this book! I can’t wait for my copy of book 2 to get here!!!
