Digital Grace: Pouring Benevolence into an Outraged World

Rate this book
We don't grant each other enough grace.

Outrage abounds in digital spaces, causing deep rifts in our friendships, families, and communities. Our inability to converse productively online makes it more difficult to build a better world together.

It doesn't have to be that way.

Digital grace diffuses the indignity pulsing through social media networks. It empowers us to approach online interactions with an attitude of giving rather than taking, welcoming rather than rejecting, and forgiving rather than resenting. This book guides the reader through a personal journey of considering when, and how, to grant grace in social media spaces.

To move forward together in this diverse, complex, interdependent world, we’re going to have to grant more grace to people who think and behave differently than we do. We have to consciously look for the things that unite us rather than divide us — the things that uplift us rather than anger us. Digital grace helps us embrace others — and ourselves — as we imperfect, flawed, but beautifully human. That’s a strong common bond that can unite us even in the darkest of times.

With questions and activities at the end of each chapter, Digital Grace is excellent for individual reflection and group discussion. Chapters Why Digital Grace Matters, Grace in Context, Grace Gives, Grace Welcomes, Grace Forgives, Grace Forgets, Grace Grows, Granting Grace to Yourself

The World Needs This Thought-provoking Content!

I'm so glad to see this book put into the world! This etiquette is much needed in a time of anger, fear, and division. The content will only become more relevant with the creation of the Metaverse and subsequent digital spaces. I hope to see a follow up edition when the time comes!

As someone who works in the tech space, and believes social media plays an important role in our lives today and for the foreseeable future, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I also appreciate that the author doesn't focus on just the postives of social media; she acknowledges the negatives as well. One of the first things the author does is acknowledge the role of the individual in the online world.
Algorithms do support divisive content due to their focus on interactions, views, or clicks. As individuals, we have to use our human brains, something the algorithms don't have, to take responsibility for ourselves, our reactions, the content we consume, and the content we put into the world. This is where Digital Grace steps in.

I spent much of my time with this book highlighting and rethinking my own role in digital interactions. I agree with the author about the need to give grace in these spaces and open our minds to see the value of diverse perspectives, even if we disagree. We can respect each other without agreeing on every topic. The amount of power in such a community is mind-blowing and inspiring.

I also enjoyed the format that provided questions at the end of each chapter, making the content easy to apply and discuss in book clubs and classrooms.

Just finished reading Digital Grace. I felt a weight lifted off my shoulders. I especially appreciated the last chapter on letting go and disconnecting. I related to having family members whom I don’t agree on topics with and frequently flood with their views. I had felt bad about muting, or unfollowing for periods of time…until now. For the first time in a long time, I was able to disconnect over spring break while on vacation and it was truly therapeutic. You do not realize how connected and compulsive you are, until it’s turned off. I really enjoyed the questions and activities at the end of each chapter.

I just finished this book and it gave me so much more to contemplate about others and our relationships inside and outside of the digital world. I want to think more about my review before finishing it here ...and moving to my laptop rather than typing a review on my phone! 😍
