Robin Hood sees a poacher’s dog in trouble, getting abused and beaten by several guards. Naturally, he saves the dog. When Robin wants to go hunting, the dog wants to come with but is too battered and broken to survive the journey. Robin takes pity and stays, taking care of the dog and slowly nursing him to health. An amazing friendship is born. All the while, sir Guy of Gisborne and his men continue to hunt Robin. He can’t afford to stay but he can’t risk the dog following him and ripping his stitches either. What’s Robin to do?

Robin Hood’s a classic for a reason and I’m a bit of a sucker for dogs, so I couldn’t stop myself from picking this one up. It’s a very interesting concept as it’s not so much a reimagining of the Robin Hood story but rather a nice little bonus story, adding something cool and fresh to a familiar and loved story instead of trying to re-invent it.

This isn’t the Disney version of Robin Hood. There’s plenty of short, flashy action scenes leading to the death of a few guards. Those scenes aren’t too graphic but definitely intense enough for the dangers to feel real and to make for a gripping read.

Considering this is written in loving memory of a four-legged family member, one can’t help but be a little emotional if you’ve experienced this particular pain.

Overall, it’s a well written cool little story. A bit too short for me though.

The story begins with a hunt where hounds are brutally killed, leaving Robin feeling powerless to stop the senseless violence. When he returns to his cave, he comes across an injured dog and takes it upon himself to treat the animal. He decides to name the dog Herne.

Despite the tragedy that he witnessed during the hunt, Robin's kindness towards the dog shows his compassion for all living beings. His decision to care for Herne demonstrates his respect for the value of life and the importance of empathy.

By giving the dog a name, Robin also shows his sense of connection and responsibility towards the animal. He recognizes that the dog is not just a helpless creature, but a being that deserves attention and care.

Three days after treating Herne, Robin hears soldiers searching for the dog and realizes that he must leave the safety of his cave. Unfortunately, he cannot bring Herne with him and is forced to use a stone to scare the dog away. Robin is filled with sadness as he watches Herne whine and slip through the trees.

Even with a heavy heart, Robin knows that he must concentrate on confronting Sir Guy. It has reached a critical point and he no longer can stand by what is happening.
My heart was broken and angered by the violent treatment of dogs described in the first pages of this short story. However, its message comforted me. Dogs are loyal and know how to thank those who save them.

It's worth a shot.

Robin is hunting - not animals, humans - the Sheriff's men in fact. When Robin finds the men, they have a hunting dog, their prey, cornered with an arrow in him. Robin shoots an arrow into each man and then heads back to his cave with the injured dog following. This very short, quick read, is a little sad but ends, in my opinion, on a high note. Does that make me bloodthirsty? Very highly recommended.

Good but sad :( I liked this book. It started out having the reader focus on 1 character & then it seems to switch off & back. The story starts getting sad towards the middle & by the end you may want to have tissues handy. At least I needed them. I recommend this if you like short stories.I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

This is an extremely short story, delving into Robin's character from one fight. The story is dark and sombre. A very enjoyable read.

Robin Hood's rescue of a dog proves to be wise decision.
