First of all, I gave this book a pass because it is an easy read and mostly entertaining. The locations in the book are well- described and well written.
The reason I rated this book so low is because I wonder if a lot of thought went into it before writing it. The characters make the most stupid decisions:
1) Mitch mistakenly texting the guy he is chasing. I mean, that is just next level stupid and would never happen.
2) Mateo wanting ransom money FROM THE POLICE?? I mean, he's an infamous drug leader who just got released from prison and is on the run for killing three people AND kidnapping a detective and his mom. He surely wouldn't be that stupid to then go ask the police (???) for money. Why would anyone ever do this and think it would work? He's known for killing everyone that gets in his way, but the detective that locked him up repeatedly in the past gets spared...
The thing that mostly sets me off in this book is how the dialogues are written. This was a problem in book 1 and book 2 as well. Nobody talks like that. The dialogues between police officers are so extremely cringe. Quotes such as: 'Let's throw his ass in jail' or 'His ass should be in jail, where he belongs' are repeated so much and again: NOBODY TALKS LIKE THAT. When in Mexico, the stereotypes are all over the place. Friends of Mateo only get called 'amigos' and every Mexican in the book acts the same way, doing stereotypical Mexican things.
The author really has something here. She clearly knows how to write and establish good settings for the book, but honestly... there should go more thought in decisions made by the characters and dialogues. If you wouldn't say something in real life, then why use it in a book...
Book 1 was worse than this one. book 2 was a big big step up and very promising. Book 3 was a letdown again..
