The Wright Detective #1

The Mysterious Locker Notes

Rate this book
Every small-town mystery needs The Wright Detective . . .

The first notes to drop were eerily simple: I SEE YOU . . .

Seventh-grader Tessa Wright is Greeneville Heights’ middle school track star and super sleuth. Following in her detective dad’s footsteps, she has a perfect record of solving the town’s most mind-bending mysteries with the help of her three best friends (Skylar, Leah, and Riley). The TSLR Detective Agency is always on the case from Tessa’s backyard treehouse, atop a majestic maple.

Despite being fast on the track and in deductive reasoning, Tessa is completely stumped when creepy, cryptic notes from an unknown sender start dropping into her locker. Normally, cracking this type of case would be an easy task. Except only-child Tessa’s mind is preoccupied with a dreaded addition to her family: her mom’s baby bump.

Now, Tessa needs her friends more than ever. Too bad they are more concerned with their own worries, including the upcoming spring dance. For Tessa to keep her perfect sleuthing record and her sanity, it’s vital she solve this mystery as soon as possible. This time, the answer might be WRIGHT in front of her own eyes.

I enjoyed this book so much. Not only is it set in modern times, but any book that gives me Sherlock Holmes vibes is a keeper.

Imagine having your very own Detective Agency in your backyard treehouse. This is what the seventh grader Tessa Wright has. She is Greeneville Heights middle school track star and amateur super sleuth. With the help of her friends Skylar, Leah, and Riley, they take on their small-town mysteries and solve them using their witts and tenacity. Together, they'll navigate the never-ending trials of middle grade and a peculiar case where someone is leaving creepy and eerie notes on Tessa’s locker.

Not only does the book give us an amazing, cozy mystery vibe, but it touches on other subjects like the importance of friendship, family issues, and how competitive in nature we can be. If you are looking for a book that is perfect for middle-grade readers and also young adults, this will definitely keep you guessing until the end.

I received this book from the author in exchange of an honest review. Thank you!

I was so excited when the author contacted me if I would love to read her newest book, an MG! I was all in! I loved the author’s YA debut and I was eager to see how her MG debut would be.

In this book plenty of things happened and I just wasn’t bored. Not at all. I was invested! And you know, it sucks when you cannot sleep, but if that means you can read a good book? I can forgive my body just a bit for not sleeping. XD I just read on and 3 hours later I was done and could try again for the sleeping part.

In this book we follow a girl named Tessa. She loves track. She loves her family. She has great friends. Is good at school. But there are things that aren’t working out, her mom is pregnant and she isn’t sure how to handle not being a single kid any more. Her friends are also getting more and more distracted by their own things. And then there are the notes. I loved the notes (I will speak about them more later). At the start I found them creepy, but then later as things happened? I didn’t think they were that creepy any more. OK, maybe that waterbottle part had me doubting for a hot minute. XD I really loved reading about Tessa and her life. I wish I could step in and join the girls. That dance squad sounds amazing~

I just LOVE LOVE how Tessa’s mom pregnancy was handled. You see that the whole family is having a tough time, the baby is unexpected (though welcome… well at least by the parents) and we see everyone struggling. But Tessa the most. Which I can imagine. She has been an only kid for like 13 years and the baby’s expected day of coming out is around her birthday. I can understand that she is angry, frustrated, and maybe even mean. But what I love is that her parents and everyone around her respects her feelings. Don’t tell her to hide it. Don’t tell her to just suck it up. Don’t tell her to just get on with it. They don’t get angry, just shower her in more love. This is so rare in so many MG books in which an unexpected pregnancy threatens to throw over all the normalcy of the day. So it was a delight to see everyone just give Tessa room. Tell her it is OK. They talk with her about it. Try to make the best out of it. Same with the birthday (which btw I was for sure would be overtaken by a baby), I just loved that despite how Tessa was acting, her parents didn’t get angry at her, instead tried to make her happy and still make a good day about it. I loved how when the baby was there Tessa was allowed to stay out of the way, the parents made sure that she wouldn’t be overwhelmed, and loved that Tessa decided to also partake in helping out a bit, even if that was just running with the baby stroller (special one for running).

The author really managed to capture these characters. They were really their age and I love that. Plus, I love the characters that we got. Well, OK, except Ethan, and maybe a dash of Skylar when she was still gung-ho about Ethan and just couldn’t stop talking about him. But I did love the other characters, Leah, Riley, Mason, the parents, the coach. They were well-written and none of them were flat cut-outs, they were all very much real. Each of them had their own things going on and I loved finding out about it (sometimes it took a while) and see Tessa try to help out her friends, try to talk to them about what is going on. Mason was just the cutest and I loved the conversations between him and Tessa. The bet for some dinner. How he talked and listened when she needed it. There chats about books (Hobbits and Nancy Drew).

The track parts were really fun. I am not a running girl myself, but I do love reading about it and at times also watch some competitions. See people just fly over the field. Tessa is a superstar, for real. I just love how driven she is and how she keeps looking for new challenges. How she keeps improving herself. How she keeps finding the best in herself. I loved how she could relax and just forget about things for a moment during the track practices and meets. Plus, she was so sweet and friendly towards everyone. Even when there was a girl just being crappy, she kept her cool.

I loved the ending, with cats (so adorable), some new rules to the treehouse, and I am very curious about that case and what it will entail (though I can already kind of guess a culprit XD).

The little images with each chapter were a fun addition! I always love it when authors add just a bit extra to the chapters. Some with funny chapter names, others with fun illustrations.

There was just one thing that I wished, that there was more detective agency and more mystery. Sure, we get those notes and a fleeing cat and maybe a few meetings (where they mostly just eat pizza, bicker a bit, Skylar talking about Ethan), but there aren’t that many of those, and unlike what the cover makes it seem there aren’t envelopes streaming out of her locker and neither are her friends aware that she is having someone putting in notes. She keeps it all to herself. So I feel that could have been made bigger or maybe made less of a big thing if you just want to keep it in the background.

All in all, if you are looking for a MG with sports, fab characters, handling a new brother/sister, a dash of romance, and a bit of mystery, then this is your book! Try it out!

This was such a fun read, that gave me the same vibes/feeling as I had when reading the Babysitters Club growing up. 7th-grader Tessa Wright is Greenville Heights' middle school track star & super sleuth. Following in her detective dad's footsteps, she has a perfect record of solving the town's most mind-bending mysteries with the help of her 3 best friends (Skylar, Leah, & Riley). The TSLR Detective Agency is always on the case from Tessa's backyard treehouse, atop a majestic maple. Despite being fast on the track & in deductive reasoning, Tessa is completely stumped when creepy, cryptic notes from an unknown sender start dropping into her locker. Normally, cracking this type of case would be an easy task. Except only-child Tessa's mind is preoccupied with a dreaded addition to her family: her mom's baby bump. Now, Tessa needs her friends more than ever. Too bad they are more concerned with their own worries, including the upcoming spring dance. For Tessa to keep her perfect sleuthing record & her sanity, it's vital she solve this mystery as soon as possible. This time, the answer might be WRIGHT in front of her own eyes. I loved this town. It's written with the amazing cozy small town vibes. All the characters are so great, & all the girls are each dealing with something in their own lives. But it's like Tessa thinks a new baby sibling on the way is the most important & horrible thing above anyone else's. Ugh. Lol I loved Tessa EXCEPT when she was home around her mom/talking or thinking about her new baby brother on the way. At those times I couldn't stand her. She sounded like a spoiled brat, & was horrible to her mom especially. Her parents were even kissing her butt, sooo apologetic to her & spoiling even more which was ridiculous. I understood being upset by the big change to come, but geeezzzzz! I could keep going but I'II stop lol. It just really irked me. Other than that, loved the mystery aspects & the friendships, & 1st crushes. Very charming wholesome read for sure. Beautiful cover by Michael Borkowski as well.💜

The Mysterious Locker Notes follows the story of Tessa and her friends, where, together, they have formed the TSLR Detective Agency and solve mysteries within their neighbourhood of Greeneville Heights.

When Tessa starts receiving mysterious notes in her locker at school, she commences an investigation to solve the mystery of the notes. Deciding to keep it to herself rather than share the case with her friends, Tessa also encounters other events in her life, such as concentrating on her track running, watching her friend’s relationship with her boyfriend fall apart, as well as dealing with a new addition to the family after being an only child for thirteen years.

This book covers a lot of what children and teenagers experience on a day to day basis. Kelly’s characters experience situations from divorce, to first relationships, and spring dances at schools. Making the characters have experiences readers can relate to will push the book for further success as they will find enjoyment in associating themselves with certain characters and be able to put themselves in the book.

Aged 27, I really got a thrill out of reading The Mysterious Locker Notes. It brought me so much nostalgia on how I enjoyed mystery books like this when I was younger and I was constantly reminded of books like The Secret Seven.

The mystery of discovering who was finding out who was behind the notes had me hooked and attempting to solve the case myself! Therefore, I think this will be a well loved young adult book, and I look forward to hopefully reading more subsequent stories about the TSLR Detective Agency.

First of all, I'm really want to thank the author behind this sleuth worthy fabulous book, Kelly Swan Taylor and grateful for sending this copy to do an ARC.
Even though I'm in my twenty something, I felt lively by this and I really couldn't imagine how 13 year old could do such adventures. Not only that, but the way they face the problems in real life is also great.

This is so fun to read and interesting and the plot was easy so I've finished this in one sitting. My favorite character is Mason Greene because I liked his calm demeanor and the presence of him like a safe harbor.
So I really loved this book and enjoyed thoroughly throughout the pages.
I want another adventure like this!!

Do you ever read a book and then get lost in nostalgia? This book reminded me of Babysitters Club, Nancy Drew, and even a bit of Sweet Valley. It’s a perfect book for a younger audience if you think they would like the 90s series. The romance was sweet, barely there. The drama life of an almost 13 year old detective was perfect. I loved the friendships, Mason, the book reports, the detective mysteries, the false clues for who did it, and more.

Such a fun read! Quick-paced, with a cast of likable characters and engaging ‘side quests.’ The first chapter was genuinely a little creepy and I wasn’t sure if it would turn out to be a YA thriller instead of a detective story. I’m so happy to say it is ‘sleuthy’! I think what I liked best was that it is the perfect blend of modern and relatable yet nostalgic and timeless. While it’s spot-on age appropriate for YA readers, any lover of clues and whodunnits will enjoy this read.

A girl's family life is changing before her eyes, and mysterious notes are being sent to her.

Tessa Wright, a seventh grader, has had a lot of good times with her friends and family. Though, there will be a significant change in her family life: her mother will have a baby. Tessa did not want things to change, and there was another thing to consider. Someone is sending her mysterious notes, but who? Will Tessa overcome those challenges?

This book is a great mystery book; I was intrigued and hooked to discover the identity of the mysterious notes' writer. But the story is not just about the mystery; it's also a good story about friendship and getting a new family member. I understood how Tessa felt (since I'm the elder sibling of my family, although I don't remember my sister's birth since I was 2 and a half at that time). I also felt a bit sorry for her parents because having a new member in the family would put Tessa in a different position, which might impact their relationship.
The descriptions of the notes are excellent and spine-tingling. I put myself in the shoes of the "Wright" detective and tried to follow along and solve the mystery.

Tessa is a hard-working, sporty person. She is good at solving mysteries, and I know she will be an excellent big sister. Her friends tend to bicker among themselves about trivial matters such as Skylar's new boyfriend, Ethan. Her parents were lovely as well.

The theme of The Mysterious Locker Notes is always to strive to do your best. I recommend this book to mystery lovers and teens in middle school.

I won this book via an IG giveaway.

I really enjoy reading The Mysterious Locker Notes. It brought back memories and feelings when I was younger reading these types of mystery books. Gives you those Nancy drew vibes.

The plot involves little notes found in Tessa locker which she has decided to keep to herself than sharing with her friends where they have formed the TSLR Detective Agency and solve mysteries together. This is where the investigation of these notes begin. Throughout the book Tessa goes through some life events. From dealing with a new family member to watching her friends relationship unfold. This book covers what teenagers and children would experience in their life today. Having characters that you can relate to, will make this series lovable, relatable and enjoyable for young readers.

I couldn’t put this book down. I had to know who was behind these mysterious notes. I was hooked from the start. I look forward to reading more stories about TSLR Detective Agency and more about Tessa as well.

A BIG thank you to @kellyswantaylor for giving me this opportunity to read your book <3 Look forward to reading more!

As you read this wonderful story, you will he immediately thrown back to middle achool and all it's awkwardness in that twilight of childhood innocence slowly turning into the storm that is young adulthood. Except this time, you have wonderful, smart and savvy friends to accompany you. The characters are realistic and engaging. The setting is very modern, and the mystery at just the right level. Our heroine, Tessa, is very relatable. Even though she is a track star and competent sleuth, she struggles with self condidence and changes on the homefront. Her relationship with her mother is spot on...my own relationship with my daughter being very similar in the struggles and tension but always maintaining that underlying love. A wonderful first installment in what I hope will prove to be a long series. You cant go wrong with The Wright Detective!

I received this book from the author in exchange of an honest review. I am a huge fan of middle grade mysteries, and I would highly recommend this one. Here are why the characters each bring a great element to the story. Also, the story had that je ne sais quoi that makes you want to read more. I liked how the book was well written and made me smile. My favorite character was Tessa who is Seventh grader at Greeneville Heights’ middle school track star and super sleuth. with her friends decide to solve mysteries and find out the who what why and how. So, if you like Nancy Drew and The Hardy boys then add this to your tbr pile today.

The Mysterious Locker Notes the first book in the Wright Detective Series is an engaging, witty, captivating, humorous, and nostalgic series! This book is reccomended for 10 to 16 year olds and is a rare combination appropriate and absolutely addictive! I remember reading well above my grade level and struggling to find books that interested me and were age appropriate during that transition age. I wish this series was around back then! The mystery completely draws you in however, other relatable issues are also a huge part of the story. The arrival of a new sibling, crushes, friendship, the stress of having parents who are going through a divorce, and all the regular school drama are some fantastic subplots. What I love most about this book is the relatable group of friends!

The Wright Detective led us on quite the sleuthing journey as we tried to piece together where these locker notes could be coming from! Tessa is a lovable and relatable main character that has a great sense of humor, is intelligent, and has a fun circle of friends and side characters joining in on the fun. Kelly Swan Taylor incorporated relatable hurdles that come with that middle school territory such as first crushes, new siblings, relationships with parents and friends. This is the first in the series, currently 3 books published and are quick and easy reads that would be enjoyable to a range of middle grade readers and even parents to read along with.

This is a fabulous mystery - it's well written and it's a lot like the life of a teenage girl. You get to follow her trials and tribulations of growing up and dealing with life's situations changing around her and how she deals with it (like her mother expecting a baby)

Once I started reading about Tessa, her friends and the TSLR Detective Agency as they solve the mystery of the notes in the locker and Houdini the cat it was hard to put the book down.. It's an easy read that holds ones interest and would be recommended for YA and grown ups alike.

What a great read for Bridging the Gap between children books and YA. This is such a wonderful middle school book and I cannot wait to share with my family. The friendship of the girls in the book is unbreakable and so sweet. The interest level in bringing the boys into the story is prefect and very appropriate! Such sweet first crushes and sweet moments. The mystery was perfect and fun for the girls to work on. The treehouse is the perfect meeting spot and I love how it plays a part in showing the growth of the characters. Loved this book and cannot wait to jump into the second one.

Such a good kid-lit book! A good bridge between Nancy Drew and the high school romance movies on Netflix, but for a younger crowd! Plus a full-set of female characters who think boys are *icky*!!

Tessa and her crew love a good mystery and set out to solve the town’s hard-hitting cases as the TSLR Detective Agency. Despite being super sleuths, Tessa is stumped on where these cryptic and somewhat creepy locker notes are coming from. Join Tessa and her friends in this middle-grade adventure to solve this mystery and grow through some tough hitting topics!

This was a one sitting read for me and not because it was aimed for the middle grade audience! Kelly has given all the nostalgic vibes of my favorite series from my own childhood. The characters are diverse, witty, independent, and ambitious female leads. The storyline tackles those awkward middle school year problems such as new siblings, crushes, breakups, parent relationships and divorces, and more. I was shocked at how much was packed into this book without it feeling too stuffed and dragging on. This group of gal pals are so relatable and lovable that I can’t pick a favorite!

Thank you to Kelly for the gifted copy in exchange for my honest review!
