Mind Fuck: The Mass Psychology of Creeping Fascism

Rate this book
A torrent of nationalism, racism, misogyny, and irrationalism is sweeping the world. The authoritarian right and new forms of fascism have become a clear and present danger.

Neoliberal capitalism has torn society apart. Alienation has reached an unprecedented level. Extreme narcissistic individualism has become a pandemic.

In this little book, Neil Faulkner draws on Marxist-Freudian theory to provide an updated analysis of the mass psychology of fascism, and to argue for a progressive counter-offensive based on love, labour, and reason.

Interesting

Except for the references to Trump, Johnson, and Bolsonaro, this could have been written 60 or 70 years ago. I don't mean that in a times haven't changed way, but rather in that Faulkner is using Freudian and Marxist theories that don't seem to have evolved at all since then. Fascinating. Like reading something by a sixties academic who time-travelled to today but read nothing about the developments within their field.

Fantastic tour de force of radical psychoanalysis presented as a masterful synthesis weaving in Shakespeare. Clearly makes its important point, in an enjoyable way.

Actually a fantastic introduction to Marxist/Freudian analysis for the uninitiated. Genuinely written for a mass audience that don't know a great deal about either, and it rises to that challenge exceptionally well. A great explanation/extension of Marxist alienation and Freudian libido etc...

You will have to read a lot about genitals and "analism", and, like another reviewer said, it struggles to fully transcend this slightly archaic source material, but it is worth a read if you're new to the topic. It filled in some gaps in my knowledge.

This was rather an interesting read, wish it would´ve been a bit longer and in-depth but it´s a nice introductory text to the subject (that one subject everyone´s talking about and none know where it´s going to take us). I recommend this book to people who are looking more into the subject, want to learn about what´s happening and how we got to this point. Of course you will need to read a little bit more about the subject (maybe history books and one or two current articles).

The overview of Marxist psychoanalysis makes it worth reading as an introduction or refresher. I was disappointed that the "progressive counter-offensive" promised in the blurb was not articulated at length. Interesting but not essential.

Anytime Freud is brought out the bag, I start to step out, but how he brings it isn't entirely out of pocket. Still a little out of pocket though.
