At last reunited, Nate and his family agree to head south for the Citadel, a place they hope will be a sanctuary from the horrors of everyday life in America. Throughout the country, nuclear power plants continue to spew clouds of deadly radiation, and a record snowfall keeps starving civilians trapped in urban areas ruled by criminal gangs.
Within this hellish landscape, and against all odds, Nate and the other members of the Northern Patriots’ League seek to lay the foundations for a new kind of America—one truly forged on the ideals of freedom, equality and self-determination.
Amassing against them is a powerful force that seeks to destroy the Citadel and everything it stands for.
At stake is a battle over the very soul of the nation. Will it move toward the light? Or be consumed by darkness?
There is so much I cannot stand about this series:
-Plot armor big enough it’s amazing the characters can even walk under its weight
-Nate is what every neck-beard, insufferable man imagines they are. And in case it’s not clear, that’s not a compliment.
-Nate is also the absolute WORST father and husband I’ve ever read. His wife makes like 3 appearances, his NEWBORN daughter even less. And he only thinks about them when he sees them. He spends more time with a minor that he’s obsessed with and other women who have daddy issues and are gear/gun heads.
-his daughter has a health issue and he EFFING LEAVES for the minor? Divorce.
-The revelation of his brother is equally as terrible a storyline as his Stockholm syndrome sister
I’m finishing the series out of spite, but I cannot wait to be done.

Nate Bauer and his family are trying to stabilize themselves in a very small community called The Citadel, however there is a competing group living nearby that has been attacking the Citadel. It turns out that old enemies are back and new enemies are meaner than ever. This one ends with a real shocker and I'll be on to the last in the series tonight to see what the heck is going on!
I like a book that keeps you guessing the ending. But the great books bring you surprisingly twists and turns that make you want to turn the pages faster. Moral of story don't be complacent.
This one was so incredibly slow and the writing was even more mediocre. I think there were at least 2 instances of "she was dirty, but underneath it all she was actually hot" which I just can't let slide.
After reuniting with his family, Nate and Dakota head to a commune to hopefully start a new life. As they settle into life in the citadel, trouble is never far away as the weather and a rival community look to derail what they are building.
