Secretly, Sloane Tarnish has always admired her outlaw of an uncle, and his tales of not-so-legal adventures across the galaxy–but she never thought she'd be asked to help with one of his heists.
When Uncle Vin shows up on her med school campus with a plan to steal a chip full of Fleet intelligence–and the baffling idea to have her play a key role in the scheme–Sloane's got her doubts. Uncle Vin doesn't seem to realize that her top skills involve the kind of shots you drink, not the ones you fire.
But Vin's convinced the Fleet's got plans to install empirical rule across the free galaxy, and that this data could stop them before they can begin. When a bunch of rogue delivery drones start taking shots at her–and not the liquid kind–she has to figure he's onto something.
To prove it, all she needs to do is steal the data key from the middle of a Fleet ball… and right out from under the Commander's nose.
Too bad she's got absolutely no idea what she's doing…
Outlaw Rising is the prequel novella to the Parse Galaxy space opera adventure series.
Kate Sheeran Swed loves hot chocolate, plastic dinosaurs, and airplane tickets. She has trekked along the Inca Trail to Macchu Picchu, hiked on the Mýrdalsjökull glacier in Iceland, and climbed the ruins of Masada to watch the sunrise over the Dead Sea. She holds degrees in music from the University of Maine and Ithaca College, as well as an MFA in Fiction from Pacific University. Her stories are forthcoming or have appeared in the Young Explorer's Adventure Guide Volume 5, Daily Science Fiction, Electric Spec, and Andromeda Spaceways. You can find her on Twitter @katesheeranswed.
Sloane is an unconventional heroine - smart, a bit older in that she’s a shocking 30 years old, and trying to abide by her father’s wishes by staying in med school and out of trouble. Of course, she yearns to put her quirky brain to “better” use and finds life quite the bore. When her outlaw uncle comes around asking for her help on a dire mission to save the galaxy from tyranny, she really can’t resist.
An intriguing start as Sloane and company save the day. It’s enough to make me consider following her on her next mission - saving her missing wayward uncle!
This novella was a good introduction to the world/universe the author has created for her Parse Galaxy saga. The characters were charming. The action a bit cramped. The humour and wit considerably lesser than 'Highly Irregular'— the entry in "Crooked V.1" that had drawn me in. But overall, it was a good read. Perhaps the following tale, i.e. the first novel in the series, would be even better. Let's move ahead with such hope.
Vin's on the trail of a data pirate, who manages to outwit him. If Vin's going to have any hope of preventing the pirate handing the data he's carrying over to the most dangerous person in the galaxy, he'll have to call on his niece.
For a prequel novella introducing the characters and setting up the series, this was okay.
The world was pretty standard but it seemed interesting enough. I didn’t get much idea of how it worked, but I’m sure the other books will go into that in depth.
The crew of the Moneymaker didn’t stand out to me but they seemed fine. I liked that the pilot had a parakeet.
There’s a scene at a dance which reminded me of the Firefly episode ‘Shindig’. I really enjoyed the chapters concerning the party.
Unfortunately, the main character of Sloane didn’t work for me. I think she was supposed to be someone who was a little lost in her world of privilege and wanted to make a difference, but didn’t know how. However, she struck me as spoiled, selfish, immature, and completely unconcerned with other people and their different circumstances.
I will most likely read the series and follow Kate Seed on social media. Now, about the novella. There is a lot of information in very few pages, but it's well done. Action. Intrigue. A possible romantic component.
Surprised at the age of the characters. Vin and his brother, Zander, are in their 50's (at least). Shocked that Sloane is 29.
So, the series isn't YA/NA Space Dystopian.
I was wrong to assume this was Twilight in space. The series will be great if the prequel novella is any indication.
A good prequel, pilot episode style in order to introduce a few characters and circumstances. I think I might have enjoyed it more having read it after the first book in the Parse series (which is definitely on my TBR!) as I'm not sure I got all the references to various intergalactic organizations mentioned. It does a nice job of showing us Sloan as she thinks on her feet while attempting a sneaky heist job, and I would want to read more of this oddball crew's adventures in a full length novel where everything would get time to shine.
Well written with an intriguing storyline great characters well fleshed out and enough back story to make them credible. When her not quite pirate uncle asks her to help save the Galaxy what's a girl to do? Jump in with both feet and to hell with the consequences. Lots of twists and turns and nothing as it seems make this a great read, you won't want to put it down, can't wait to get the next in this series, highly recommended, Baz.
This prequel novella sets up some curiosities I'm intrigued to learn. I don't usually read prequels before reading book one in any series, as the true start of the story can be swayed by knowing information from a prequel. But I decided to dive into this novella, as I received it for free. The concept is fun and it feels like a good start to a series. We'll find out in book one!
I loved Sloane when she was introduced in the LIO series and was so excited to hear that she was getting her own series! This totally lives up to all the expectations I had building while I waited.
Sloane is a wannabe-artist med-student who gets forced into helping her outlaw uncle with a heist. It's just as fun and exciting as it sounds.
This was a very good read in the fact that it gave you some information as to how she ended up with the ship and crew. If I would have known it was out there I would have read it first but somehow I missed it and started the series or it was written later on. I suggest you start with this book. Great series so far .
A young woman's medical studies are interrupted by an uncle requesting her assistance on a job he's been assigned. All she has to do is crash a military ball, intercept a data chip and down load it. He drops her back on her planet. A year later his ship appears on her campus without her uncle but with his crew who need her because the ship is keyed to her and her uncle is missing.
The uncle that she loves asks her for help because he’s over his head in an acquisition that his employers want him to get. She ends up going with him and finding what he needs but she has to go back to school after the adventure and forget about having fun.
I want to know more about Sloane and the Parse Galaxy. She’s smart, funny, and a bit of a pirate too. She’s trying to go to classes and stay out of trouble but her uncle visits and well, adventure awaits.
Sloane is my favourite main character in the authors Parse Galaxy books. This novella has a lot of backstory information that helps when reading the following books. It’s fast paced and has a lot of action. I enjoyed the novella and have the next books in the series.
Okay. A little slow to begin with BUT(!) action caught up and the intrigue kept me going. Sound odd? Well read the tale and let yourself get immersed in the telling. Space, spies, and a ballroom Ball!
Sloane was only at medical school because her father was making her. When her not-so-legal uncle invites her to take part in his next caper, she's happy to go along with him.
This is a very enjoyable introduction to this series with plenty of action and intrigue and I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
