Big Joe Egan: The Toughest White Man on the Planet

Rate this book

By the age of 24, Big Joe Egan had over 80 boxing wins, 7 Irish titles and was a Golden Gloves champion. A mean body puncher with a durable chin, he went the distance with Lennox Lewis and beat future WBA champion Bruce Seldon.
Encouraged by Floyd Patterson to try his luck in the USA, Joe joined ‘Iron’ Mike Tyson’s training camp in the Catskill mountains with the great Cus D’Amato. Joe became like a brother to Mike, and, in this book, he gives a rare insight of the early Tyson, who after sparring with Joe described him as the Toughest White Man on the Planet.
In the UK, opening a pub pitted Joe against protection racketeers. Armed with guns, axes and machetes, the organised-crime gang attacked Joe’s pub. During a battle worthy of Braveheart, Joe and his friends stood their ground, and Joe was shot. Tragically, Joe was charged with attempted murder.
Big Joe Egan is a gripping, entertaining and uncompromisingly emotional account of how the Toughest White Man on the Planet could not be held down.

Tough time don't last tough men and friendships do

A very good book by Big Joe Egan. It gives meaning to the quote that "tough times don't last, but tough men do," and the friendships that come with them.

Joe Egan was a promising young armature boxer. From humble beginnings, he has earned the respect and friendships (to him the respect and friendship are the same thing), of some of the greatest boxer and businessmen of his generation. Though his friendship with Mike Tyson gave brought the most eyes on him (which he freely admits), this is Joe's story.

Joe might have had some epic boxing wars, but as Rocky/Sallone says, "nothing hits harder than life." Joe has had to deal with bad relationships, unfair treatment from his own government, gangsters and even the police. Through all this, Joe has managed to stick to his principles and sense of honour. He will make enemies but lifelong friends as well.

This book also contains a few updates that are added after the original book came out. Then, it finishes with book recommendations and an extract from one of those books.
