I am so lucky to spend my life working with books and stories. I've run groups for babies, toddlers and their parents in libraries, reading stories and introducing children and carers to great books; I spend time writing and I'm Editor-at-Large for the magnificent independent publisher, AlannaMax in the UK.
In my spare time, I read - what a wonderful life!
There are some Children's Books on my shelves (obviously) but for a more comprehensive selection of children's recommendations, look at Lulu's shelves:

It is often a challenge to find children's books with black characters that aren't overwhelmed with historical narratives or self-affirming gobbly-gook (be like Harriet Tubman! You're special! No really!) The little touches make this book unique and lovely: Lola's soft cloud of unraveled hair when she wakes up, the way she kneels on the floor during story time at the library, or how her mom spoons a little cappuccino foam in her mouth during their snack-time. I read this book to my daughter almost every day!

The story is very simple: It’s about the weekly trip Lola and her mother make to the library, although it includes a bit about the rest of their day, including the bedtime story.

It may not be a flashy story, but it’s a great book for teaching kids about the library, and it’s a bit of a love letter to libraries and books, so of course I enjoyed it.

I really liked the illustrations too.

The author and illustrator are both English but it doesn’t have a particularly English flavor; this story could have easily taken place in the United States, or almost anywhere where there’s a library that has both children’s and adult books.

What a beautiful book! At the end of the story, I felt joyful.

The illustrations are spectacular.

Bonus points that the protagonist, Lola, happens to be both female and of African heritage and that there is diversity among the other characters.

I will be looking up other books by this author and in this series.

"Lola loves Tuesdays. On Tuesdays lola and Her mommy go to the library"

"Lola likes stories with bears and any thing with shoes"

Students received Lola at the Library during the winter break. We are marching into spring and our classroom continues to read it over and over again. Especially on the day Lola actually visits the library. They enjoy learning about what Lola likes to do with her mommy. Having a photo of both parents on mommy’s nightstand, gives children hope for the future. This edition is available through the school market and the illustrations are done in acrylic paper, it feels so good when you turn each page. Nice font, too. Good deeds are rewarded!

Who doesn't remember being a child and getting excited when it was that day of the week that you got to go to the library? Ok still is like that for me as an adult. That day of the week when I was a kid was Saturday. My mom who was also an avid reader would take me ever single Saturday and I always loaded up on books. I always took out the maximum amount that the library would let me and sometimes even convinced the one librarian to let me sneak in one or two more.

Lola is up bright and early because today is Tuesday and that means she gets to go to the library. Lola loves the library and is ready to get a whole bunch of new books to read.

Let's admit it that all of us bibliophiles can totally relate to Lola. There is nothing more magical than a library/bookstore. All those books and worlds to explore or revisit. It just puts you in such a contented place. I loved seeing a younger child who is excited about reading but isn't one of those advanced readers like Matilda. She is just a normal little girl who loves to read. There is something refreshing in that as a lot of times book lovers are portrayed as reading "the classics" by age 3. Lola reads picture books and she especially reads the ones about things she likes like bears and shoes.

The illustrations were wonderful and do a great job of portraying just how much Lola loves books. The rapt attention she during the story time reading is obvious.

My favorite part was after the library when her mother has a cappuccino and shares a spoonful of the foam. The reason is that it reminds me of when my stepdaughter was little. She loved it when my husband would give her spoonful of his coffee. She would beg for more. I don't drink coffee so there was none to be had from me. But she didn't mind having a sip or two of my tea. This part just brought up feelings of nostalgia for me.

5 out of 5 stars!

Nothing particularly groundbreaking here - just a sweet story about a little girl who looks forward to her Tuesday visit to the library. I love the routine activities Lola and her mother indulge in during their weekly trip; these are the things that children will ALWAYS remember. Rosalind Beardshaw's warm and cozy illustrations also add a nice touch.

My family has fallen in love with this book. The text and illustrations are both top notch. But I must admit we fell in love with the illustrations immediately. They are superb!!!

Little Lola gets so much joy from her trip to the library that it truly is contagious. It's great for encouraging the love of books and reading. Thank yous to Anna McQuinn and Rosalind Beardshaw for giving me something I can feel good about sharing with my children. Something that positively reinforces our values (we are big readers in this family and have several hundred children's books).

Originally published in Britain as Lulu Loves the Library (oddly enough, listed on my copy's colophon as Layla Loves the Library), this adorable picture-book for younger children follows the eponymous Lola (here in the states, anyway), as she and her mother head to the library for their weekly Tuesday visit. From selecting interesting books (Lola likes stories about bears, and about shoes) to singing and story-time (she knows the words and hand movements for Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star), Lola loves everything about the library! The aftermath of their visit, in which Lola and Mommy get a treat, is fun, but the best of all is bedtime story-hour, when Mommy reads some of Lola's new library books to her...

With a simple text - no more than a sentence or two per page - and colorful acrylic illustrations that capture the joy of Lola's day, Lola at the Library is a delightful book, one ideally suited to introducing very young children to the pleasures of the library. I don't entirely understand (as per usual) why it was necessary to change the title of this book, when bringing it over from the UK, but leaving that issue aside, this is one I would wholeheartedly recommend to all young library-lovers, and to their parents! I myself was pleasantly reminded of my own weekly trips to the library as a girl - it was Saturdays for me! - a tradition I have kept up to this day. "Library Day" is always a happy day!

I read this one in Dutch, but I will be writing this review in English so more people can know about this book.

Because, boy, this book is super adorable, cute, fluffy, and perfect for us bookworms. Going to the libraries is such a magical thing, and I was just delighted to see how Bibi (or Lulu/Lola) loves going to the library. She was all eager at super early in the morning, and all done with putting in her books in a bag even before they had to leave.
Most kids I see going to the library are totally the opposite, they just run around screaming, or just don’t care about the books and instead play the games on the PCs that the library has. So yes, I love it when there is a kid, even if fictional, who loves libraries for the books, for the stories.

And then the trip, and also the whole time at the library (story time, finding new books, and even singing), and then what happens afterwards. It was just one trip of squee and cuteness. It made me want to go to the library, even though I just came back from it.

The art is also pretty cute, and really fun. It was so fun to see Bibi’s expressions when she got to the library, when she found new books, when a book was read to her. The artist really captured them well.

All in all, this is a great book for bookworms little and big. I would recommend it.

Lola at the library is a story about a little girl who loves Tuesdays because Tuesday is not only the day she has her mother full attention, she and her mother spend time at Lola’s favorite place and that’s the library.

What readers learn is how much fun can be had at the library in the children section of the library such as singing, story time and reading books.

I absolutely like the cover because it shows a child browsing through books.

Perfect intro for young children to the public library. Sweet illustrations of Lola greeting a baby in a stroller, picking her books, finding her library card, sitting quietly during story time, and the description of a librarian "buzzing the books through the machine" make it very accurate for a toddler's experience at the library.

I freaking ADORE this book. If you don't want to reach right into this book and cuddle with Lola, you're BROKEN. I love the details in this book- Lola's little bracelet, her love of things, her joy in going to the library and spending time with her mom. No, it's not an extraordinary story, but it is sweet and simple.

I realize I'm some kind of negligent boob, but tonight was the first time I took my 2 1/2 year old to the library. In my defense, I have a very spirited and physical child so I dreaded shushing her and containing her gigantic force of will. So, with my 5-month-old strapped to my chest and my toddler in tow (and I mean she was towing *me*), we took our first trip to the library tonight. I was rewarded for my efforts with the following:
--Bella tore books off the shelf and attempted to misfile them many times.
--A disappearing act when I looked down for three seconds to scan one of the 15 books she choose (randomly I suspect). Right when I was about to scream for the cops, I caught sight of her furry pink jacket under a chair.
--And finally, a class-B tantrum because she couldn't leap off a computer desk.

This was the only book I chose for my daughter and it was a good choice. The illustrations are sweet, the storyline is short and to-the-point, and it is instructive for toddlers and preschoolers. I can see how this book is important in that Lola is a young preschooler who just happens to be black. No mention is made of her race. Bella (the center of the universe according to her) pointed to Lola and declared that she was "Bella". This pleased me, and I felt relief that I didn't have to dive into the complexities of race just yet.

This is one of my favorite picture books. I've used it for storytimes at the library, to read to my own children, and to give as a gift. It is simple, but it captures the joy I always felt going to the library as a kid, and the joy I hope that I create for children in the library.

A 4 from me (the adult.. allegedly, anyway), and a 2 from the target audience, which is especially odd because an older, much admired child who can read all by themselves recommended this library book to us.

I think it's sweet. The illustrations look quite cartoony (reminds me of JoJo and Gran-Gran in colour and style), but closer up you see it is painted on canvas, and little details like the mum's glass of water on the bedside stand out beautifully on the textured surface.

Plot is VERY simple, and reassuring. I thought it was going to be a hit - every page was completely relatable for our library experience - but apparently it was dull (NB: audience has cold and is grumpy).

On app - had to search for this by ISBN. Apparently it's "Lola Visits the Library" in other markets?! Lulu Loves the Library appears to be the original title (2006, UK, Alanna Books).

Text-to-Text Connection: How is the topic, theme, or story elements connected to a different children’s book?

I enjoyed reading this book, it made me think about how my mother would take me to the library. We would go the library and I would proudly hand the librarian my library card to check out my books. Lola was so excited to go the library on Tuesdays and hand the librarian her library card. This book also makes me think about the "The Library Book." Both books focused on going to the library to check out books and the adventures that come when you read. The little girl in "The Library Book" was ready to go to the library on a boring rainy Saturday, she gathered her books to return and headed to the library. It was like the books were calling their names. Both little girls were excited to visit the library and let their imaginations lead way.

Lola at the library by Anna McQuinn
This book is about a young black girl who wakes up every Tuesday to go with her mother to the library. This book demonstrates the love for books, reading and library visits. This book is great could be a mirror into a child of colors live. It’s a good book to teach about diversity because of the racially mixed neighborhood. It can also teach children that books be a bridge between a parent and a child. Reading together can create bonds and strength relationships. Children may enjoy this book because they can relate to Lola and her experience at the library. A teacher may use this to teach children about a field trip to the library and to grow a love for books.

This book was a wonderful read for the children I read with. This book teaches children all about the process of going to the library and the events that can happen at the library. This book also has great artwork that incorporates diversity into the people of the book that creates wonderful pictures for children. This book is a good book for children who are learning to read and learning about new experiences.
