Oh this was just awful.

This book was the all the reasons many women of color probably find it hard to get on board with the "stranded in a cabin in the woods with a sexy lumberjack" trope. No matter how seemingly sexy the lumberjack is, we will always be wondering in the back of our minds "Did this redneck vote for Trump? How does this guy feel about a random black woman invading his space and needing a place to take shelter? Is this how I'm gonna die???"

Perhaps Terran's attitude toward Viola--being in a remote part of the country where there aren't a lot of POCs and him having very little interaction with them--may have been realistic but it was NOT sexy. And I found it very hard to believe that even with his micro-agressions (and even blatant racist cynicism), this woman would STILL fall in love with him.

If I could have given this book NEGATIVE stars, I would have.

ahem, where do i start? where do i even start with this book? i want to say i am speechless because what i just read, i did not expect.

this is a bwwm novella. at first it starts off fine, right? fmc gets into some sort of car accident (not so badly), mmc comes out to save the day and brings her inside. she’s pissed and saying some shit and y’know at first i was like “wtf is her problem. he’s trying to keep her safe.”

UNTIL…

this mf man has a mouth on him and i don’t mean it in a dirty way, yea no. he’s referring to the fmc as a “colored” woman and bro it ain’t the 50’s anymore. what are you doing? and let’s not forget he keeps talking about racial things like her “black 🐱” and his “white 🐓” oh jesus.. i am stunned.

i kinda feel embarrassed and i can also feel my ancestors looking down at me in disappointment because i did enjoy this book, what sorta black person am i for liking this? okay well.. i pushed aside the shit he said. things could’ve been worse, sue me.

DNF. I can’t stand how much he referred to her as a colored girl/woman after he said OUT LOUD that he’s never touched a color girl I literally can not. It honestly shouldn’t be mentioned and if it is it should be once at the most not more than 3 times.

I am not too sure why I keep coming back to this author. Her writing just isn't for me.... Every time I read one of her books I end up feeling really uncomfortable.

What was appealing about this hero??????????Was this book intended to showcase race play??????? WTF was going on the entire time?????????? Doesn't the heroine technically have a concussion????????And at no point did the heroine consent to sleeping with the hero. It seemed like she just gave in to the hero's whim.

great intro

Great intro to the series. IR/intalove/forced proximity. Viola unexpectedly needed help after wrecking her car near Terrans property. He was willingly to help her …and eventually love her. Quick read. Well written.

1.50 Stars. (BW/WM). Audible audiobook narrated by Chris Merlin.

Setting: Current day in a remote woodland somewhere in USA.

Trope: Stranded woman rescued by woodsman. Forced proximity. One bed.

Main Characters:

Viola Asmell, heroine, a twenty something year old recently divorced New Yorker journalist who works for a non profit.

Terran King, hero, a 27-year-old land owning loner living in a cabin in a secluded woodland.

This is erotica pure and simple...no plot nor rhyme or reason for penning these unbelievable events or characters. Terran makes reference to Viola as a colored girl/woman as though he's from another era. Then there's the idea that Viola or anyone would willingly submit to having any orifice penetrated by a stranger; likewise , it is inconceivable that Terran or any male would want to have unprotected sex with a stranger. The storyline opens with Terran's dog discovering Viola injured in her wrecked car. Terran notifies the sheriff and takes Viola into his cabin where he offers her food, a shower and an overnight respite in his bed. There's a temporary lose of power to his cabin, Viola asks him to cuddle with her, he becomes aroused and must be sexually sated; so after a few colored/ black girly part references, Terran penetrates Viola's vagina and anus. Viola looses her apartment and job and continues to live with Terran. They fall in love, off page, she gets a journalism job there, gets pregnant, he proposes and they live happily ever after in their cabin in the woods.

What was this book?
2.5⭐️
Initially I downloaded this book because I love the western/cowboy romance genre. I was also intrigued by it being a BWWM, and a one bed trope. I wasn’t expecting magic and the rating seemed ok For a Novella; I assumed it would be a short fun read. What it turned out to be was ….. unexpected.

I wouldn’t say I disliked this book, but around 25-30% I knew I was just reading to see where it would go. It is definitely an isolated rural area, behind the times with little interaction with black people.

TW:
* If you don’t like any mention of race leaning toward a lack of diversity or cultural sensitivity, this isn’t your read. There are multiple mentions of her being “colored”. I wouldn’t say it was full blown racism, as I think that indicates malicious intent. This was more a curiosity or fetishism, which at times still felt weird.
* If this was a kink/bdsm book I would say he engaged in “race play”- she was clearly uncomfortable with his mention of each of their races and asked him at least once not to mention it (especially during sex)- this is where my previous mention of “lack of cultural sensitivity” and fetishism comes in. Though she doesn’t like it, she doesn’t say NO or ask him to stop even after giving him permission to eat her out.
* If Dub-Con is an issue, this isn’t your read. I normally stay away from it like the plague. I prefer vehement enthusiastic consent. If I had known this was dub-con I probably would have skipped it.

There are other reviews calling this a “rape fantasy or kink” PLEASE BE CAREFUL WITH YOUR LANGUAGE. Dub-Con and Rape are not the same thing. She says on page “I don’t want to move. I just want to feel him inside me. I want him. I want Terran.”
Does she feel ashamed that she wanted to be with him physically, while having issues with him personally, yes - that’s what makes it dubious.

Anyway, I read instalove. When it's done right, and you can feel the love and connection, it’s amazing… this felt more like insta-circumstance.

I received a free copy of this book via BookFunnel and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Hahaha! I loved this lil’ diddy!

My oh my what a randomly funny räcist lil’ story! I’m dead. I had raised eye brows and uncomfortable laughter at the same time. No malicious intent in this book, nothing smacking of hate just things that you’d talk about with your girls. Freaking hilarious and it talked about BOTH races so nobody was left out. That wasn’t even the basis of the short story though. Love was.
These 2 were lonely & unknowingly ready to find love and did so promptly with each other thanks to a snowstorm. You obviously have to like insta-love stories to enjoy this short novella which I do so it was fun.
All in all a nice tiny taste of sorbet to cleanse my pallet allowing for a reset so I can read something completely different. The steam is here was off the charts too btw I was blushing!! Yeah, a totally fun read.

There was a reason why fate brought Viola to Terran's door.

Viola's accident in the middle of a snowstorm was the beginning of the rest of her life. There was no place for her to go when Terrain rescued her. To Terran, she was mouthy and bossy. To Viola, Terran was a foul-mouthed grumpy hillbilly redneck. Both of them were lonely and lonesome and when the spark struck, they burned down the bed. Terran was determined to keep Viola and Viola was just as determined to leave. Well, the fates were lined up against her leaving. She ended up finding her and Terran's HEA.

This was not my cup of tea. I don't too particularly care for short stories. I prefer books with more of a storyline development. To me, there was just too much of a detailed sexual encounter.

My Favorite of the Series

Grumpy, reclusive country man Terran is lonely, but he'd rather live alone with his faithful hound than deal with talkative troublesome women.
A nasty winter storm brings an injured Viola nearly to his doorstep and all of the sudden there isn't enough beer in the world to help him deal with this sexy firecracker who isn't even the least bit grateful that he literally saved her life. When the power goes out, Terran will have to figure out a way to keep this city girl warm without burning up the sheets. Will he be be able to control himself?
The bickering and chemistry between these two is funny and overall perfect!
Great, short read by one of my favorite BWWM authors...

Loved 🥰 It

I have been divorced for 8yrs, no intimacy in 7yrs. Married for 30 years for some stupid reason I fought for my marriage, he just didn’t want to fight for us. Reading Terran ask Viola about her sex life, and did she do certain things, and she didn’t, well her man didn’t. Then later finding out she was divorced, that most have been ruff. My husband was a selfish S.O.B. he would get off but I wasn’t aloud to. It very frustrating not being able to cum, sometimes I feel like I’m broken.
I really loved reading this, I like how Terran let Viola know he was the man, and he was going to take care of her.
Your stories never disappoint me, J.J. there all great.

Short and sweet

Fate is a funny thing and makes for the best stories. A wrong turn in a snowstorm brings two totally opposite people together. An independent city woman and an alpha male country guy brought together by chance, and end up falling for each other. Viola and Terran's story had me laughing and rolling my eyes in equal measure. The bedroom scenes were quite steamy and definitely added lots of flavor to the story. Jamila definitely knows how to bring heat to a romantic story. My only complaint is that the story was shorter than I would have liked. Otherwise, I definitely recommend this book.

Terran and Viola

I kinda liked this book. It was funny to me even though it has a racist vibe to. Terran a grumpy lonely farm boy who has had interactions with "colored" women as he calls it just says what ever comes to mind but not in a malicious way. Viola has no problem throwing it back cause she surely called him a "cracker" 😂😂 a time or two. He helped her from a accident in a snow storm and she just knew he was trying to kidnap her. Once he went black he wasn't letting her go. This may not be a lot of people cup of tea but it was entertaining to me.💜💜

Viola and Terran - Together forever. Just one more night

I never expected this book! It is awesome. I loved grumpy Terran and just as grumpy and vocal Viola. They were perfect together. Their sex life was explosive and their love, once realized, was a truly wonderful piece of art. SPOILER ALERT: She lost everything where she used to live but gained a husband, a dog and a soon to be family.

I'm trying to meet my reading goal so I did finish it. I didn't love it though, he referenced their color a little too much for my liking. He also used the word colored way too many times and the woman MC (who is a black woman) should have corrected him from the jump. Also, he was a little bit predatory at times and not in a fun way. I'm going to give the second book in the series a chance because I want to believe it can be better than this

Once again its the MC

How did anyone get past the first few chapters... Viola is the stereotypical black women that seems mad at the world. I could understand not wanting to stay at a strangers house but the lack of appreciation for saving her in the first place is annoying. From the moment she woke up, she had an attitude. Everything he offered or did, she met with an attitude. The mentality came off as childish.

Meet cute

Nice story about lonely mountain man Terran, and lonely city girl Viola, meet by accident, and the rest is history. Cute short story but I could have done without all the stereotype references to color and race, even though they made me, laugh out loud. But I do like the concept of two very lonely people finding one another in an odd way and falling in love in the process. Short but sweet😜 💞

Interesting..

I was first introduced to this author from her latest mc series and as I wait for the last book, I decided to see what else she’s created. I headlined this interesting because I’m almost 40 and I’ve been single for 9 years now. I believe I had a realization that I want the type of man she writes about although I love me a short king. Lol seriously good story and I look forward to reading more.

GREAT BEGINNING SERIES

This is how you start a series. The storyline alone makes for a great weekend starter.

I’m sooo looking forward to seeing what’s next in the series.

On the edge

Wow! No pulling words in this one. Terran was full on real with her and she clapped back. While there were misteps and dubious consent, it was a good story. Not your typical love story but one none the less.
I wanted more of this story before it ended. I will read the second story and see how I like this darker edge.

Unfortunately, fortunately this book is on my Did Not Finish shelf. So take my one star rating however you choose. I could not finish due to the ignorance - sheer ignorance e.g, references to Viola as a colored and constant talk of her skin color. I also felt like the sex scenes were practically non-consensual. Had this book been outside of my phone I would easily have thrown it in the trash. The book was a disappointment to put it mildly.

Surprisingly love…

I loved this story. Terran was genuinely funny, caring, dominating to a certain extent and very sexy. Viola was the perfect woman for him. She was strong with her own opinion.on things. Although a person can enjoy their own company. They came together like fireworks Com realizeing companionship and love iis even better. ❤️❤️❤️❤️🔥🔥🔥🔥

Horny hick with a ❤️

Enjoyed this story! Terran finds his goddess Viola. He knows two things: he's not leaving her and he's not letting her leave him. Some men argue others just don't take no for an answer. This "reasonable" guy won't let Viola make the wrong decision no matter how hard she tries!

very good 👍🏾

I really enjoyed this little story about Terran and Viola. It was short and too the point. She got rescued after crashing her car in the snow. Terran brought her home for a night so she could recover and that was the beginning of a love story. Very good 👍🏾

This was a beautiful story. I love how Terran took what he wanted and convinced Viola that life with a farm boy could be great. Loved that he was a Taurus man and loved the beast within him. We should all let out our beast sometime.
