Steven Konkoly’s final book in the core Black Flagged series is shocking, suspenseful, and pulse-activating. It has aspects of both political and military thrillers as well as an action-adventure thriller and is the sixth book in the series.
This book picks up immediately after the fifth book and pits General Terrance Sanderson’s remaining operatives and an odd assortment of allies against a plot to reshape the country in the image of a newly elected, third party administration. This party is actually a domestic terrorist organization pretending to be a third party political movement. A complicated operation is the only way to end the madness of the fringe fanatics’ antics. Is it even possible? Who can be trusted? It’s been five years since the fifth book in the series was printed. For those that want a recap, there is a summary of each of the previous books at the end of this one. A much-needed character list is also provided.
This series is mainly about covert operations overseen by General Terrence Sanderson. At one time, they were funded by the United States. However, defunding his organization didn’t stop him from protecting the country. He found other sources of funding for their activities, even when he had to flee the USA. This book is mainly set in Virginia, Mexico, Washington D.C., Texas, and Vermont. It is exactly what you would expect from a well-written action thriller with lots of concern over how to protect one’s country.
Due to the large number of characters in the book, it helps to read this series in order. That way, a reader is not learning all of the secondary characters at once, but gradually over time. Readers will see General Sanderson change over the course of this sixth novel. There is even a little humor sprinkled in towards the end of the novel. However, the focus is on action and not character development in this one. Despite this, the main characters in Sanderson’s group come across as fiery, bold, and intense.
This novel kept me captivated from the first page to its astounding conclusion. The plot is deeply involved with several twists to the story, although many of the activities are over-the-top. It was so full of action and excitement that it kept me turning the pages to find out what was going to happen next. At the same time, it was somewhat unsettling when you examine the thoughts, behaviors, and actions of many of those in power politically. I was kept fully invested in the mission becoming a success. But is that what happens?
Konkoly continues to bring great characters, entertaining story lines, and lots of action together in exhilarating novels. The gripping scenes and great plot kept me on the edge of my seat. He has become one of my favorite authors and I look forward to reading more from him.
Overall, this book was suspenseful, riveting, fast-paced, action-oriented, and entertaining. This final book in the series was worth the wait. If you enjoy action thrillers that have both strong male and female characters, then this may be the series for you.
Opinions are mine alone and are not biased in any way. Publication date was June 28, 2022. This review was originally posted at Mystery and Suspense Magazine.
I couldn’t review the series from book one because I had a feeling I’d be repeating my excitement over and over again. I’ll start at book three because that’s where everything was heightened for me, the true Daniel revealed and I don’t think I was ready for that, I completed book three and still wanted more and the same goes for all the books post this one.
Everything was just so fast paced and anxiety inducing because after one twist I couldn’t be sure if I should exhale and unclench 😂 you just never knew, fast forward to book 5 I couldn’t help shouting and cussing 🤬 😂😂, this was the most intense by far … the race against time with the worst obstacles one could possibly imagine and I had to reread a few chapters especially after passing each obstacle because I was so anxious and I had to double check to make sure they really did make it. It felt like watching a movie
While reading book 6 I was on edge because I really really wanted one person to be killed so bad that when he escaped I had to take deep breaths or risk pulling my hair out 😂😂
Ok all the dramatics aside , the plot , storyline and execution were just perfect and what I liked about this series is that nothing was predictable and you just didn’t know if a knife, grenade, sniper or whatever weapon available was going to end it or just a pat on the shoulder 😂🤭. I loved everything, superb writing to Steven Konkoly 🤍
What a satisfying end to an epic thrill ride! Konkoly never disappoints, and I can't get enough.
I hesitate to give any spoilers to anyone who is just now discovering the Blacked Flagged series, so I'll just say this about it: There are three things about Konkoly's writing that I especially appreciate: (1) He's gritty. No Teflon-coated James-Bond types here. You never know what's going to happen nor how serious it'll get. (2) The characters are relatable, even the bad guys. Nothing is black-and-white here. Everyone's motivations are understandable from their perspective, however twisted or messed-up that may be. (3) It's always action-packed. Like I said, an epic thrill ride.
Vindicta: A Black Flagged Thriller (The Black Flagged Series Book 6)
This was an amazing series. Very well written. It's quite obvious to me that Steven Konkoly did not start his life as a writer, but a warrior.
The main thought I have right now is how immeasurably grateful I am for those who guard the fences and stand ready to do the ugly things so most of us can live pretty, sheltered lives.
Very nicely done Been a while since I'd read book 5 so took a couple of chapters to get back into the ongoing story All the characters are there, all of them taking an active part in their endeavours with none sat on the sidelines watching The non action parts of the book are still fast paced, finding stuff out, setting stuff up, getting stuff in place. The action is as well considered and thought out as any you'll read. Not crazy detail i.e. I don't need to know the calibre of the gun, or the magazine capacity, but enough so it all makes sense I think I have now read every book Konkoly has written and I cannot wait for the book/series
The plots and sub plots are riveting. I liked this book because it is a good wrap up of all the books which is really hard to do in any series. I liked the unholy alliances with some of the teams and individuals. So hard to put the book down. A great read but it will keep you up for many nights especially when you think about our current political environment.
If these events are truly happening behind the national scene in the running and protection of the government and all that come against it, we are living in a bubble in our cushy little American world. Shadow this, conspiracy that, double agents, double crosses the list goes on. This author is one of the greats. I will be lost after having had his entire story at hand to enjoy daily.
What an absolute great ending. Not only does Sanderson close out his required serio BBC BBus question of if True America was evil. He definitely answered it . With Burke caught he was just the squeaky wheel. So after dropped his guts it was essentially over. With Resnigue esnitially out of loop Sanderson could concentrate on the res. Cat of True America. It really went well!!! 10 stars plus!!!! Thanks. Carl Clause
Fans of the series must have been very impatient for this book to come out. Although it picks up directly from the previous book, "Omega", it didn't come out until 5 years after. Not surprising given Konkoly's output and branching out into other series, but, oh boy, it must have been tough to wait!
And this one is a fitting end, with as much betrayal, violence, heroism and pragmatism as you could wish for. Overall I've really enjoyed this series and will continue with others -- on to the Zulu Virus Chronicles!
Simmons.awaking to the fact he was tied to a chair, and two officers were facing him. Noticing the general and he had survived, was now plotting revenge. Black Flag has an operation to stop this madness of the general. The conclusion was filled with tension to the end. Well done and readers will enjoy Given ARC for my voluntary review and my honest opinion
So much beyond belief. So much too believable. If you’ve read the earlier Black Flagged books, you know what you’re in for. A complicated plot. More characters than you can keep track of (so glad for the character list at the back). And a rollicking fast-paced good time. I think Kaparov is my favorite character. Great to have an ARC for this book.
The Black Flagged series has entertained us and kept us up well past our bedtimes. The finale did not disappoint. Our favorite characters, non-stop action, and incredible plot line are nicely weaved together in these final chapter, but not without a Konkoly surprise or two.
I really enjoyed this series and raced through book after book. Steven Konkoly is one of the best authors out there for spy/ government/ military thrillers. His insight knowledge translates really well into the story which feels realistic throughout.
I hadn't read a Black Flagged series novel in awhile. It was enjoyable reading about about General Sanderson's crew again. This time, they were taking down True America who had infiltrated themselves into our government. I was sad to read that this would be the last of the Black Flagged series.
Black Flagged is a must read series ! Tightly paced, twisting plots, excellent villains, marvelously conflicted heroes, awesome action! Monopoly keeps you reading waaaay too late into the night because you can't bear to not k ow what happens next!!!
This has been a thrilling series with great character development and unpredictable plot twists that kept me coming back until the very end. A bit sad to see the Black Flagged series coming to a close, but a very satisfying resolution.
What an epic story. This wraps it all up in a way only Konkoly could do! An explosive story with all our fav characters, action and the final revenge and redemption! Read it!
I very much enjoyed the black flagged series and am sorry to see it end. I'm just glad that there was an ending. But I'm looking forward to reading more books that will have black flagged characters in different stories.
This story could have been ripped from the headlines, had our recent election gone differently. This book is a fitting end to this series. The characters are well-developed and make the series a fun read.
This fantastic book picks up where the last one ends. Sadly it’s the last for this series. Action, suspense and more that will intrigue you to binge read. Characters that make you feel you’re a part of their world. Outstanding
More than anything else I related solo much to today's American crisis. Though it is a fiction novel, gave me a feeling of hope that there are still good people that will do whatever it takes to bring good and right and common sense back.
I assume this is the last in this series so I waited with review to state that it's the best series on black ops that I've read. Plots and characters altar seemed plausible. Will. attempt to read all of your novels. Keep writing!
What an awesome book to the finest series I've read via my Kindle. Sad that it had to end, but will re-read them in a few years. Kinda crazy how some of the Black Flagged cast of characters show up in most of Steven Konkoly's books. This series is a must read!
Enjoyable, well written omnibus about 2 college kids who get drawn into the world of espionage. And their adventures over the next 10-20 years makes a great, fun read. Do you'd better get started.
I really liked the banter among the teams, and the characters, the relationships and of coarse, the intrigue! I recommend this series to anyone who enjoys fast moving action and plots with national and international ramafications
I enjoyed each of the six books and plan to continue with each additional book by Steven Konkoly. Each character came to life and sometimes death as each drama continued. I am hoping that each of his proceeding books are just as interesting.
Not quite as action packed as some of the other books, but still fantastic good wrap up book to the series. Closer out all of the loose ends amd was a good end. Really enjoyed this series. Great read and highly recommend
I enjoy series, this answered a lot of questions in the Black Flag series. Plot twists, characters were interesting. The story brought in different Countries and Governments, great read.
I thoroughly enjoyed the Black Flagged series and this final book provided an excellent end. It did however leave me with the feeling that there is an opening for the storyline to be continued at some point. I would be pleasantly surprised if this did happen.
