AN UNTIMELY BLOCKADE

Admiral Richard Wellborn’s departure was mere hours away when Nivia’s disaffected spacers cut the planet off from the rest of the Commonwealth. Now back in God’s Saucer, he needs a ship and someone foolhardy—or desperate—enough to run the blockade before the standoff between the star system’s opposing factions escalates to civil war, and he thinks he’s found both. The problem is, they’re the same sketchy characters whose salvage he confiscated as part of his OSPAR investigation. Reilly and MacLeod are willing, for a price. Are they sincere, or will they wait until they have money in hand before pushing him out the airlock? Wellborn is desperate enough to find out, and soon discovers that the situation on Nivia is far worse than he ever imagined.

A DANGEROUS GAME

The Nivian Secret Service was about to discover Maalan Bragg’s deceit when the spacers’ threw him a lifeline with their EMP attack. Now that he’s in command of the God’s Saucer Federal Police garrison by default they have to trust him while the Nivian government struggles to recover a decimated technological infrastructure. However, not everyone is willing to leave the search for Terson Reilly on the back burner during the emergency. When an ambitious subordinate seeks to apprehend Reilly for the previous garrison commander’s murder, the aftermath forces Bragg to risk revealing what he knows to his deputy commander and the Saucer’s mayor to prevent the cabal from taking over the community. He soon discovers that one faction of spacers might not be content to wait for the blockade to wear the Nivians down. Can Bragg protect God’s Saucer from both enemies and expect to survive himself?

CONCUBINE TO QUEEN

With Mistress Tamara murdered and Hal-san grievously wounded, it falls on Dayuki to seek revenge. Once the gaijin Reilly is dealt with, she can get Hal-san the medical care he desperately needs, reveal her pregnancy and help him shake loose the infernal bonds of his criminal Family so they can make a life together in peace. When the couple finds themselves in the crossfire of multiple enemies, it is up to Dayuki to find a way through, a burden she must accept if her lover and unborn child are to survive.

In this fourth installment of the Pale Boundaries series, author Scott Cleveland furthers the complex saga of Terson Reilly and the Nivia System. Scott does a great job of weaving inventive sci-fi tech together with wild west action. There is a lot going on in this book, as is true in the previous three volumes. While this volume stands well on its own, readers will benefit from having read the previous books. The characters are complex and layered, and completely believable; the story lines are a complicated tapestry of geo-political intrigue, environmental despotism, and personal need and desire all in constant struggle. Scott's storytelling and world building is imaginative and fresh. The tech is always an important part of the story, however, the characters are the real stars here.
