I only got into trucking because my Grandad was a trucker, and he was the best damn person I ever met. I'd always thought I was your average dude with an eighteen-wheeler and an addiction to energy drinks, but it turns out there might be something more brewing in my blood.
Now instead of some desert highway, I'm stuck in a whole new realm, and it's full of worm cults, actual lot lizards, one seriously smoking catgirl mechanic, and enough sand and bloodthirsty creatures to make me think I took a wrong turn somewhere. But if I can manage to upgrade my truck, stay alive, and save a few damsels along the way, I might be able to add a whole new career path to my resume.
Yep, just call me Jack Vale, Monster Girl Trucker. Literally.
I can say Simon is getting better at writing, which is impressive. The MC isn't annoying (this regresses a little near the end), the supporting harem isn't too overbearing and the plot actually flows well. This is a farcry from defense force and monster girl farm, and that is expected after two years of constant writing.
We still see a lot of pitfalls from the earlier writing: the MC has perfect charisma, everything is handed to him way to easily, many ideas and areas only exist to make the plot work or go and never get touched on again, way too many "out of character" type remarked by the narrating MC and pointless pop culture references are riddled through this that makes me picture the author as Chris-chan, fight scenes lack logic (the leader is in the open and an antagonist sniped a person at longer distance minutes before they showed up... you take the shot if they are going to blunder the leader).
These issues aren't as obvious as the earlier writing. That's good improvement.
The best part of this story: the time at the cult. Why? Because, out of the entire story, it's the only part that seems to have figured out how to make the characters realisticly react to the situation they are in.
Worst part: the ending fight that seems so popular to put in the final pages of the story. The battle logic is non-existant (again, if the leader of an attacking group is stupid enough to be at the forefront of their forces with NO PROTECTION, you take their life and rout whatever remains if they lose organization - you don't let them finish a ritual). The entire event feels highly lacking to a point that it seems completely uninspired and only there to "feel badass". Maybe I'm putting too much thought into it, but neither side did anything that made sense once contact was made. Attackers didn't bother to try and surround, defenders did several things that should have ended them up under automatic fire, no matter if "bullets are precious".
It could have been a higher rating, but giving the MC the easy street route to having everything they want and the ending fight really dulled what was being formed here. I get this is escapist fantasy thats probably on the same teir as harlequin romance, but it would be nice to see an MC grow something other than their penis and ego.
Picked up the audiobook for this title not knowing Simon Archer's rep, and I got to say, at least this title was satisfying, and hit the spot like a lazy Sunday afternoon.
Jack, a trucker, essentially teleports to another dimension and discovers the multiverse, and goes about collecting gear for his truck to let him jump dimensions. Along for the ride is his catgirl mechanic (at first). The plot for the most part is "we want x, let's go get it" "we need x, let's get that".
Some might find the shallow plot a mark against it, but honestly it felt refreshing. Lately I've gotten tired of the "special man to save the world" big plot big stakes. Here, the low stakes allowed characters to relax and focus on each other, the only conflict being the natural romantic tension between the MC and the first girl. Most of the book has the characters doing what they want, exploring--the MC gets to show off earth to a country bumpkin, and bring goods to a poor community, the type of things *I* would enjoy doing.
The MC isn't annoying, and the ladies are distinct enough and enjoyable, although girl2 and 3 show up fairly late in the book, meaning we get a lot of time between MC and Girl1. In the last portion of the book we get some actual tension and conflict and it progresses a little more naturally than some "Surprise climax battle" books. Overall the writing is quite decent.
I hope the author writes more, although with the completeness of the ending, I'm not sure. If there's anything that makes me worry it's that the MC's truck gets a little too upgraded by the end, making things perhaps a bit too easy going forward. If the series continues though, hopefully it'll stick to hauling goods for others and exploring the multiverse's wide open road.
Believe it or not, the best thing of this Fantasy-Isekai (teleported to another world) is the illustration on the cover. That Beast-Girl-Mechanic (Tor) is incredible <3. This first volume is really short, with 200+ pages in a big 14 size font and 28 chapters so each chapter is about 12-14 pages long. The title of the series is somewhat misleading; The main character is the trucker, the Monster Girl is a Mechanic. Beginning has a lot of plot holes, and the constant pop-culture remarks, in another world, are nonsensical and irrational, because aliens cannot know about Earth Culture, movies, music, and stupid sayings...Even if the author explains it by saying that some of the Earth movies were taken to this other world, How are they going to watch those vhs-DVD-MP4 movies??? sticking it up the crotch of their behinds? With what electricity? So yes, maybe this is a sixth grader writing a story for other nerdy-geeky elementary schoolers... Aliens speak English and understand all of the idioms, pop-references and curse words perfectly. So basically main character is on Earth, if Earth was filled with Beast-folk and monsters... Because first volume was published on March 2022, there is only one volume so far...This story wouldn't be so bad, if the author would actually think about the story beforehand to remove all of the evident plot holes, inconsistencies and irrationalities.
I could probably agree with some of the critiques of this novel. But I didn't read this for any literary intellectual stimulation. Any book that starts out with "Don't Let Boys Grow Up to be Cowboys" is not going to be a literary masterpiece. I read this book because I wanted a fun romp and adventure much like watchin and old 70's series like Movin' On or Star Trek or Battlestar Galactica. I liked the Harem building although it was a bit fast and I'm still interested in knowing how Tor is dealing with suddenly having a canine and bat type in the harem - without a 'by your leave' consideration. At least in Backyard Dungeon by Logan Jacobs there is that consideration.
Nevertheless, I can't wait to get "on the road again" and check out the Highway to Hell or is that 2 tickets to Paradise? There's a lot of fun promise in this first book. I just hope it can keep from getting repetitive. That seems to be the biggest problem with some of these series.
DNF @ 39% I get what people say when they complain about pop culture references in this book. It felt like every second paragraph referenced something. As if the author set out to beat the world record for most pop culture references in a single book. A well placed pop culture references can be quite entertaining, but given that a good number of these went over my head, it didn't work here. The 'story' itself is silly more than it is entertaining as well.
I admit I was a bit skeptical at the premise and I am happy to admit I was wrong! What a ride fast paced action, crisp dialogue, snarky humor and just enough spice to keep it interesting. You'll find the a very interesting story that keeps you turning pages to find out what happens next! Read this book!
However Simon Archer came up with this story, it's one heck of a good read and definitely a fun and original idea!
From Earth Trucker to inter-dimensional hopper with his Rig and companion Monster Girls, it's a wild ride I was glad I picked up and read and I'm REALLY hoping for another installment!
Good book, need more of this. Just from the stand point that all truckers are adventures in their own right. I should know I've been their lol. This was a fun take on thos adventures on the road and behind the wheel of a big ass truck. Tho this was a more fun adventure then what I did. Need more of this asap.
A very fast paced, entertaining story!!! Interesting characters, no OP MC,good adult fantasy activities and some good humor throughout!!! I'm seldom disappointed with this authors stories and this one was definitely fun to read!!!!
When trucking is your life it sometimes sends you on a curvy path. Jack is on that curvy path. With three lovely and lively monster girls as companions. Welcome to trucking through the realms.
So he is "the monster girl trucker" and already has a harem! All thanks to granddad. Maybe can capture the worm compound!? Got money to burn and friends as well.
This is a very interesting idea for a story line, but still an easy and enjoyable read. The idea of jumping between different realities or worlds is a dream of all readers of sci-fi and fantasy books. Looking forward to the next book in this series.
The story was a nice read it went pretty fast had decent characters world building a little bit of humor and some sexy fun times. It had some retro items and features that were a little bit campy but I think it added to the story overall.
A comical adventure through the wasteland with beautiful monster girls. Humor, great characters, and some fast paced action. Can't wait for the next book!
maggiend1@yahoo.com As usual Archer has overachieved. The only problem with being a big fan of his work is waiting for the next great story. Also just heard that book three is downloaded in my library.Imvery happy
Interesting new series with wonderful descriptions. The joining of the astral world with earth is entertaining. Using grandpa as a tie in makes it even more fun.
