At age 26 in the 1980s, Flo Trapani was an officer with the Simi Valley Police Department when few women in America were joining the ranks of law enforcement. Flo’s job as a cop made headlines, as she was one of only a handful of women on the force comprised mostly of men. But soon after she started the job, she learned she wasn’t welcome in this male-dominated profession. Her fellow officers and superiors conspired to remove her from their ranks—to the extent that she feared her life was in jeopardy—which forced her to take an early retirement. Now, nearly four decades later, Flo is ready to share this story of deceit, betrayal and heartache—and the acceptance and forgiveness that helped her move on.
I was familiar with this story when I read this book, having lived in Simi Valley for my mid childhood. I never knew the degree of torture that Flo Tripping went through. Although I would have liked the book to be a bit more fluid in it's writing, the story definitely needs to be told, yelled, screamed from rooftops!! Women still fight uphill battles every day in male dominated careers. Flo, you are a strong brave woman, brava!!!
I would give this a 4.5-5, but I'm a little biased. Flo was one of my best friends in high school, most of my best memories include her! I'm so proud of her for telling her unbelievable story! It's especially important to tell now knowing that while we've made progress, women still aren't treated as equals - as we should be. Flo's bravery in telling this story is a great reminder.
