Riley Miller is about to be released from prison after a ten year incarceration. His conviction is being overturned and his record expunged. Although he admits to having committed the crime, his rights were violated during his interrogation and his confession should never have been admissible in the first place. It is startling, actually, for although it may be true that Riley’s rights had been violated, he is not the real victim. Riley is the perpetrator.

The victim of the crime is Lucas Kiefer. Lucas was Riley’s school teacher, and he was excellent at his job. He was so compassionate and caring towards his students that he volunteered to work one-on-one with troubled Riley when he needed help with his assignments. Riley almost immediately fell in love with his young teacher, and soon he became obsessed. When Riley learned that Lucas was in a relationship with another man, he became enraged. He felt Lucas had hurt him, and plotted to exact his revenge.

In a state of wild rage, Riley kidnaps and brutally sodomizes Lucas. He tortures his fantasy lover, hoping to make Lucas aware of what it feels like to experience such pain. He feels that Lucas has hurt him, and now he is returning the favor. After raping him, Riley then stabs Lucas and sets his body afire, leaving him for dead. Now ten years later, Riley is being released from prison.

Miraculously, Lucas survives the ordeal. His body is wounded though, as is his spirit. He now has disfiguring burn scars on his back and arm. He has relocated and started his life anew. For five years he’s lived in a small North Carolina town called Cedar Point where he owns and operates a bookstore.

Nicolas Demetris is the sheriff of Cedar Point, and he is gay. Almost immediately he takes to the newcomer in town, and gradually he begins to develop a close friendship with Lucas. Although Nicolas yearns for their relationship to become more than merely friendship, Lucas repeatedly pushes him away. Nicolas investigates, and learns the details of Lucas’ history.

When Nicolas discovers that Riley Miller is due to be released from prison, alarm bells go off. He knows he must watch over Lucas very carefully and provide him with protection in case Riley returns to finish what he started years ago. Lucas is resistant, of course, and Nicolas must be very assertive in order to gain entry into Lucas’ home… and his heart.

The fluid, unpretentious writing style of author Lisa Davis is nothing less than refreshing. Her prose comes across as being very down-to-earth and conversational. There are no big words that leave the reader scratching their head. There are no convoluted parallel plots and confusing flashbacks or backstories. She writes simply and honestly, and it makes for a very comfortable read.

The most beautiful aspect of this story is the vulnerability and sincerity of protagonist Lucas Kiefer. He is portrayed as being a genuinely decent person, modest and self-effacing, and very principled. He is loveable, and there is an undeniably sympathetic component to his personality. He also is amazingly forgiving.

The romance within the story is also magnificently presented. The love scenes between Lucas and Nic are intensely sensual. Even while in the throes of sexual intimacy, the scenes did not have a pornographic feel. Instead they were beautiful and romantic. The lovemaking was not overly graphic, but the conveyance of feelings was extremely vivid.

Essentially both central characters are quite likable. Nicolas is the classic hero. The protector. The knight in shining armor. Lucas of course is his damsel in distress. These literary archetypes are depicted in the classic sense, yet of course with a notable variation: they’re gay.

The villain is Riley, and as is typically the case in romance, his character is portrayed as being very sinister and dark, arguably hyperbolic. Although he is extreme, he is believable. His mental health issues add a sympathetic quality to him as well, and in light of what we know from modern psychology, one may almost pity him. He is evil and sociopathic, yet in some ways the victim of a failed system.

Lisa Davis’ effort with this story is commendable, and it is my feeling that she accomplished everything that one would expect from this type of story. It is a straightforward, classic romance. All the elements are in place, she follows the formula, and it works perfectly. She also does an exceptional job of conveying emotion and sensuality. It’s just a truly touching and sweet story with a marvelous happily-ever-after ending. I highly recommend it.

So many things to love about this one! I liked Lucas but really wanted to smack him on the back of the head.

I really wish that the story had some flashbacks to when Lucas and Nicolas had first met. Nick thinking back on it was just a bit thin for me. If they had been more of an established couple this would have ramped up the rating for me.

I love the idea of this though, even if it was a bit too sweet in places for me. Bad guy was cay-razy! I loved it when got into his head!

Sweet but predictable story. Lucas had to overcome a horrible ordeal and refused to let anyone close enough to hurt him again, until Nicholas came along. He went a different route and let the friendship grow first. After a span of 5 years, he finally gets through to Luc, only to have Riley, Luc's attacker, come after him to finish the job. Luc and Nic are sweet together. Riley is horrendous. So, aside from him, it was a nice story.

I loved Lucas and Nicholas. But Riley is an absolute monster, a nightmare come true, one that just won't die!! I felt horrible for the emotional and physical pain that Lucas suffered...just for being a nice guy. Scary really! And poor Nicholas, bent over backwards to let Luc how much he loved him, no matter the scars, inside and out.

Takes quite a bit a time, but finally they get together, but then the monster comes back...doesn't that just figure??? Needless to say, at the end the monster was slain, the nightmare ended, and Lucas and Nicholas began their HEA.

While I enjoyed this story, it really was too short to do it justice.

After a nice build up the ending felt rather rushed.

Also for me personally the big sex scene just got in the way, I wanted to get back to the real story.

Overall a great idea that didn’t quite live up to my hopes.

Ten years before Lucas was a young high school teacher just out of college; he was the classical teacher who liked to be more a friends than a authoritative figure for his students, but he did that without second thoughts. Problem was that one of his student was an unstable teen who probably would need a psychiatric help and instead his family didn't take with the right seriousness the problem. Riley, the student, approached Lucas and when the man refused him, all went to hell: Lucas was raped and left for dead in a burning cabin. He managed to survive and to denounce Riley, but he also lost his life and his lover, who couldn't suffer his scarred body.

Now Lucas has a new life in a little small town where everyone loves him, above all the local sheriff; Nicholas is an handsome man, with plenty of choice if he wants, but he sets his eyes on Lucas. When they met five years before, Lucas was still too traumatized by his past events and he was not ready for something serious, and so Nicholas accepted the second choice to be his best friend. But now Riley is out of prison and both Lucas than Nicholas know that the man will come for Lucas, and Nicholas is not willing to let the man take the most important thing he has, Lucas; since Nicholas has no doubt that Lucas is his own.

The story is not very long and there is not mystery, since it's clear since the beginning that Riley will try to harm Lucas once again. It's more interesting to read and see how Nicholas will convince Lucas to accept not only his help but also his love. Truth be told, I think that Nicholas takes advantage of the situation to force Lucas to accept something than in other condition it will be years before they arrive to the same point. Probably Nicholas is tired to wait (but not enough to renounce) and above all he is tired to be judge by someone else actions. And this is maybe the point that I understood less: it's true that Lucas is scarred, but only on his back; in his everyday life, with dress on, he is a very beautiful man, and no one can notice his scars. All right, being a gay man, maybe having is back all scarred is a bit more important than a straight man (naughty Elisa, I know), but is it enough of a reason to dump someone? Lucas is clever, handsome, with a good work, is it possible that someone dumped him for some scars? And even if it happened, is it possible that he chose 10 years of chastity upon the action of only one man?

Anyway, the story is quite tender and the sex is good, something I noticed in the previous books by the same author: she mixes well the two elements, never letting the sex take the main role in the story, always letting the tenderness and love being in first line.

Lucas was abused and left for dead 10 years ago, and now his attacker has been released from prison.
I'm guessing this was the catalyst for finally giving into his attraction to his friend and Sheriff, Nic.
But of course it can't be that easy and Riley is out for revenge.
Now, this is a sweet story and Nic and Luc are both really great ( and after fighting their attraction for 5 years, obviously also very patient) but I was just a bit annoyed.

The cover definitely does not match what I think the book will be *g*. Anyway, I thought the story is sweet and tender. I actually like the idea that Lisa Marie also writes the thoughts of the bad guy. Makes it a bit scary. I love both main characters -- Lucas, who builds a wall around him and denies his feeling for Nicholas because he is scared that Nicholas will leave him once he sees the scar. And Nicholas who knows that Lucas is the only one he loves and that he determines to make Lucas sees that he will never leave.

While the number of "I love you" that repeatedly saidcan make me feel annoyed, but I can take it in this book because I feel it is needed to ensure Lucas how Nicholas feels.

I held off reading this for a long time because the name of the book coupled with the cover of a sweet young man made me think this was about a couple who come together because they both really care about a developmentally disabled kid. Nope. This book had almost no substance. The plot was definitely an excuse for the romance. The promised thriller aspect was lame. The fact that the two have and yet Lucas still , is just ridiculous, especially when

So, a story about a guy who has been raped, stabbed and then set on fire and left for dead should be a pretty angsty read, right? Uh, no, apparently not. This story is a bit like candy floss: light, fluffy, you can gobble it down in one go, but you'll probably feel a bit sick afterwards.

The mad man was a proper crazy bug-eyed loon, who I could imagine rubbing his hands together with glee as he dreamt up his evil plans (mwahahahaha.)

Strangely enough, Nicholas (the love interest) was disturbingly just as creepy, coming out with lines like

It is also the first romance I have ever read that actually

I know this review sounds like I hated this story, but I didn't. Bizarrely, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Nowt wrong with a bit of candy floss every now and then. With cheese for dessert.

Such fun!

It's kinda not good when the most interesting character in the book is the insane villain.

My biggest problems with this book were the two main characters. They both started off solid and interesting, but somewhere along the way turned into chicks with dicks. Now I'm not saying they started acting like real women. Nope. They started acting like stereotypical whiny, lovestruck, overwrought, hormonal, overly-melodramatic Harlequin romance heroins. Just too much saccharin dialog and dramatic pronouncements, ugh. MEN do not talk like that! The phrase "sickly sweet" comes to mind.

I skimmed the second half of the book to see what the villain would do! Without the villain, I wouldn't have been able to finish.

The only reason I didn't give this one star is the villain was interesting.

This book had its flaws, but overall I really enjoyed the plot and the characters - it was unique and heart-wrenching and held my attention. Lucas is such a broken character, so heartbreaking in all his insecurities yet with such a beautiful soul, Nic is a true force in both enhancing and saving Lucas’ life and sanity, and Riley is just plain scary.

This has not aged well. I read it from beginning to end - a three star rating from me, when it first came out, but this time around it didn't work for me at all. I've been going through my kindle, rereading books that I've had hanging around and frankly I'm surprised this came out in 2009, it feels like something written in the early aughts, 2003 would have been my guess. It's just full of tropes and ideas that aren't written about now, because they are no longer common parlance. It's also got clunky writing. So I permanently deleted it, I'll not try to reread it again.

Just as a side note, it's weirdly cathartic to permanently delete books, otherwise I look at their covers and squint, trying to remember when I read it, if I liked it etc... This way I can draw a line under it and let it out of my memory bank. Also, it's why I write reviews, to go, ah yes, that's what I thought about it...

I know it’s petty but the fact that the author repeatedly mentions that the main character has blond hair but has a brown haired dude on the cover drove me nuts.

Also, this story is quite sexually graphic but the summary doesn’t prepare you for that fact.

Finished Loving Lucas Loving Lucas by Lisa Marie Davis for Week 16: Cinderfellas.

4 – 4.5 stars

I liked this story a lot. I loved how Nic was so patient. Of course 5 years of patience probably qualifies him for sainthood, but still, he held out and held off giving Lucas the time and space he needed. He never pressed Lucas, choosing instead to become his friend rather than push for a sexual relationship.

Lucas has been through so much and decided to sit out on life rather than risk anymore pain. He manages to resist letting Nic into his life for 5 years despite Nic's already having invaded his heart.

Things begin to change, and change quickly, when Lucas's attacker, Riley, is released from prison on a technicality. The story actually covers about 4 days, from notice that Riley is to be released to 3 days after Riley's release.

I'd say this story is more tension-filled than angst-filled. I liked it a lot because Nic's gentleness with Lucas felt very natural.

I read this from the Best Gay Cinderfellas list and have to say that I don't think it really fits this list, IMO. It isn't about a guy going from downtrodden to finding his true love. It's a good story but just didn't feel fairy tale enough to be a Cinderella-esque story.

Oh and P.S. IDK who is supposed to be depicted on the cover. It can't be Lucas because he's supposed to be a dark blond. It definitely can't be Nic because he's not that young in the story. The cover guy is cute and all, but I do like a small measure of continuity between the cover and the story.

The character detail was really good. I didn't have to go hunt down photos to attribute to the story, she described them so well. Though the character on the cover of the book does not match the description in the book. Overall details were pretty good. There is rape and violence in the book but it's glossed over, your aware that it happened and your aware that it left emotional damaged but it's not detailed enough to cause flashbacks for anyone. I really loved that one of the characters was scarred, it lent a *believable* edge to the situation. I wouldn't necessarly say that this was a "chocolate" read but I wouldn't put it in the hard knocks catagory either. Now with all that said I'm sure your wondering why it's only a four star. For me the character chemistery was just not indepth enough for me to truely connect. Five yrs and they don't do anything because one is scared and the other is afraid of pushing to hard? That just wasn't believable to me. While m/m romance is a work of fiction you still have to have a core of belief in there to make someone really get into a story. While this book was good I kind of felt it lacked this core. However, I still recommend this to those that like reading about flawed/scarred characters. It's good, you'll enjoy it.

Another reviewer labeled the main characters in this story as flat and I would agree with that.

We really don't learn anything about them beyond the their main character traits - 1) Lucas has a deep-seeded fear based on a horrible attack he suffered and a asshole bf who didn't stick with him as he healed, therefore making him fearful of being hurt 2) Nick loves Lucas.

I would have loved to have known more about them.

The overall story was enjoyable and it kept my attention, but I really wanted a better connection to the characters.

I wish this book had been longer. It was a nice plot, Lucas was beaten, raped and burned, his scars meant his boyfriend left him but he was not too broken hearted because it was Nicholas he really loved. Nicholas loved Lucas to but Lucas would not let him near him after the attack. It was sweet the way Nicholas reacted to Lucas and the fact his love was stronger than desire meant a happy ending for the pair. I was scared for a minute or two I will admit but the ending was so sweet and promising :)

I should have known with the first book that I read by the same author but I decided to give her a second chance.

I read the same cliches and melodrama all over again as in the first book. There was no serious psychology or character growth, it was all about killing the past and to sleep or not sleep with a guy. At least it was a tiny bit better than Unstoppable Force.

This was more like a scene from a book. It's like your favorite TV show being delayed by political news. "We now join this broadcast already in Progress". There's no real set up of the relationship between Lucas and Nicholas. Though the author did a great job setting up the psycho and his obsession with Lucas. I would like to have seen more story building.

I am not sure whether is because it was written long time ago and times have changed so much since then, but it felt so out of place this story. And soooo cheesy. I mean, it is not bad if it makes sense within the plot, but I did not see it or connect it, therefore, it felt out.
It had though some high-potential... Sad, but well, I might also have read something worst.

Just a sweet romance. Yes there is one big action scene but other than that it was really light. Not much else to it. It is hard to give this book a good rating considering how light it really is. It is a sweet story just a simple one.
