Part of a series of books from Scholastic that explores historical events, very similar in format to the “Who is . . .” Biography Series, also from Scholastic. Really interesting look at all the myths of Atlantis.

I don't know what I don't know about Atlantis so I was going to let Who HQ help me out and that's just what they did. I've always been curious about the myth and truth of Atlantis and Carlson Berne's addition to the series captures the mystery that will forever surround it. Excavation, sonar, speculation, data collection have all been done to try to figure out if it exists, where it exists but there's no definitive answer. Especially when it comes to Greek myth, it's easy to understand that that's all it likely was however plenty of people want to believe that it did exist somewhere and it was buried be it water, volcano, or otherwise.

The series is always good for learning something new.

My nephew chose this one as a bedtime reader, and it sparked some very fun and philosophical conversations for the entire weekend. I love when a book makes a kid think about his world and the mysteries around him, and I love how enthusiastic he was about this story. He has been especially interested in the Greek gods from reading and watching Percy Jackson, and he is currently learning about Aztec culture and architecture in school, so it was a lot of fun to watch him make connections and figure out geography and timelines, as well as what parts of the stories might be true or proven false. He was very surprised that Atlantis remains a mystery, but with the ever-present confidence of a 12-year-old boy, he was quite sure he had it all figured out by the end of the book.

"...did Atlantis ever exist outside of Plato’s mind?"

This introduction to the legend of Atlantis gives a really nice rundown of what we "know" then explores various theories of where Atlantis might be, and notes that those seeking to find Atlantis have struggled to find anywhere that matches every detail Plato provided.

There is also a lot of nice mentions of Atlantis in fiction.

This was actually really interesting to me. I had no idea that there had been discoveries in recent years that were suspected to be Atlantis!

This was an interesting book that states the various theories about Atlantis, but we still have no idea where it is located.

Really solid bit of information for children, and functions as a good jumping-off point, even including mentions of Helena Blavatsky and Ignatius Donnelly, which I didn't expect.
