I finally got a copy of this beautifully illustrated cookbook from my local library. The ARC for this book expired on the NetGalley Ap before I was able to look at it. (I had requested the ARC shortly before its publication date and did not realize that I would lose access to it on that date. Forewarned is forearmed, eh?!!)

Right off the bat I'm alerting everyone that this is definitely a 5-plus star cookbook. The illustrations alone make you SO HUNGRY! Every dish is simply but beautifully presented on a neutral background: and rightly so, because the finished product is often so gorgeous you might be tempted to lick the page! (I wonder if the pages of this book would taste good with a sprinkle of Spicy Bibimbap Sauce?!!!)

Upon first glance, the Eomuk Bokkeum (Stir Fried Fish Cake Strips) photo makes you think you are getting yet another soba noodle recipe, but gluten-free lovers: THIS ONE'S FOR YOU! I swear I could almost smell the tantalizing aroma from the photo of the finished product.

What I really liked about this cookbook, which set it apart from other cookbooks I've reviewed recently, is the fact that Claire, his partner in crime and in life, adds her own recommendations and comments in just about every recipe - appearing in a one inch square on the photo of each finished dish. This couple is famous on the internet and on Youtube, where they have their own channel. I love Claire's critiques of the dishes: she is utterly charming. She describes the flavours and texture as she elegantly partakes of each completed dish: a bit like what the Galloping Gourmet used to do at the end of each show.

[Confession:

I am in no way, and never, ever will be, a Minimalist! My late mother definitely was, but luckily I take after my late Dad in many respects! But that doesn't mean I don't admire it - in a horrified but equally awe-struck way, of course! I love my kitchen gadgets, my tall shelf of overflowing books, my mahogany display cases, cabinets and hutches spilling with Grecian statuettes (Canova is my favourite sculptor!), cute ceramic birds and musical boxes, etc...... My walls sport reproductions of many of Vigee-Lebrun's portraits as well as still lifes created by an artist friend. But I digress!.... ]
And now back to my originally intended observation:
When I turned each pristine/unadorned page, my eyes were DAZZLED!
All that clean, clear space surrounding those beautifully presented dishes!
All those simply explained recipes with a bare handful of ingredients!
Just... WOW!

Sumptuous dipping sauces, braised potatoes, garlic fried chicken, boiled pork, grilled mackerel, glass noodle stir fries, spicy cold kimchi noodles, spicy seafood noodle soup (that DELICIOUS picture almost killed me!), ginseng chicken soup, royal court rice cakes.... the list of incredibly appetizing dishes is endless! I want to try them all!

Note: The pictures and graphics used in this review were culled from the internet due to copyright restrictions, but they give you a general idea of what to expect from this outstanding cookbook. (If the author and publisher give me permission to use the pictures in this book, I will gladly do so! My pictures do not do this cookbook justice!)

My recommendation? Run, do not walk, to your nearest bookseller and get your own copy of this most excellent cookbook!

My thanks to the author/chef, Aaron Huh, his beautiful and articulate wife, Claire, DK Publishing (Penguin Random House), NetGalley, and the Toronto Public Library for the opportunity to review this most excellent cookbook in exchange for an honest review! All the stars, and then some!!!

Seoul-based Aaron Huh is clearly a very talented chef. He and his wife Claire have a YouTube channel where Aaron prepares easier versions of Korean cuisine. This cookbook is a five-star product if you adore Korean food and you’re going to keep gochujang, fermented soybean paste, gochugaru and a few other cornerstones of Korean cuisine. I spent a year in Bupyeong Province in South Korea, and I love Korean food — just not enough to stock up on items I’m going to use five times a year. You know who you are, so there’s no need for me to leave a star rating.

This cookbook was just as the title implied, Simply Korean. I loved that it was a straightforward cookbook that was well organized. The instructions for the recipes were clear and concise in a way that made me feel confident that I could recreate some of the wonderful food pictured in the book. I definitely think any home chef would be happy to add this book to their collection. 4.5/5 for me

I'm so excited to get started cooking! I've wanted to try making Korean food at home for a while but only recently actually started looking through cookbook options. This popped up on NetGalley the other day and seemed perfect! Everything looked so delicious of course but each recipe read as doable. There beginning introduction to common Korean ingredients and even not so common ones was very informational and set a good level of expectation I think. I'm particularly interested in making the gyeranjang (marinated soft boiled eggs), myeolchi bokkeum (stir fried dried anchovies) and dak bulgogi (chicken bulgogi). I will definitely be buying this for my personal collection!

Thank you to NetGalley and DK publishing for the eARC in exchange for an honest review.

Want to thank Netgalley and publishers for giving me the chance to read this book. First thing is first I gave this book major points for having a picture for EVERY dish! I cannot stand when a cookbook gives you recipes but no pictures. I would love to see what you want me to cook/bake. The pages were nice and clean. The only sad part is the lack of desserts. Even one or two would have been good but we didn't get much. Maybe one or two in street foods. Either way loved this book!

I absolutely love the YouTube channel Aaron and Claire. It’s rare that I enjoy a person’s content so much that I want to get their merchandise, and I am so happy to have this book! Their channel is extremely inviting and is an excellent place for any beginner cook to start: Aaron takes the fear out of certain dishes: “Don’t worry about it!”

I’ve made most of the sauces from the book and they are excellent! If you have this book but haven’t checked out the channel, prepare yourself for a goldmine of knowledge and easy meal ideas!

Gorgeous mouthwatering cookbook!

Simply Korean by Aaron Huh is a beautiful cookbook that features Korean dishes you can try to make at home. I love Korean food! I often visited South Korea and had a lot of fun trying out different dishes, and most of my favorites are in this cookbook!

This book has lovely photos of the dishes you can try to make at home. I appreciate how food is categorized, with the book starting with banchan (side dishes) and ending with street food. Korean street food is fantastic and delicious, by the way, and so filling!

The instructions are easy to follow, many of the ingredients are familiar enough in most households, and some ingredients are common enough to find in Asian groceries. I especially love the banchan section of the book, and it reminds me of all the side dishes served in Korean restaurants. Chicken-mu (Korean pickled radish), mechurial jangjorim (soy sauce-braised quail eggs), eomuk bokkeum (stir-fried fish cake) are a few of my favorites.

Jjimdak (soy sauce-braised chicken), Tangsuyuk (Sweet and sour pork), and Jjajangmyeon (noodles with black bean sauce) are my favorite Korean food too. And ALL the soups in the book are a must-try; I tried them in Korea and loved them! I’m looking forward to trying my hand at making them all. Eomuktang (Fish Cake soup) is the easiest, so I started with it and enjoyed it.

I love this cookbook and highly recommend checking it out.

Thank you, NetGalley and publisher, for the advance copy.

This book is WONDERFUL. And so easy! Which is not an easy feat when it comes to Korean food as it’s generally a bit time intensive. Everything we have made in this book has been absolutely delicious and spot on authentic. Highly recommend. We had a three week Korean food marathon during the time I borrowed it from the library and then just ended up buying the book to continue making the rest of the recipes. Now I look forward to making something from this book every week.

This cookbook features a large variety of easy to follow recipes! I absolutely love it, and can’t wait to run out and grab a copy. Korean food is one of my favourite cuisines and this book walks you through the important ingredients that aren’t common in Western culture and provides clear pictures of what your recipe might look like.

Originally posted on my blog Nonstop Reader.

Simply Korean is a comprehensive collection of Korean food with recipes developed and curated by Aaron Huh. Released 20th Dec 2022 by Penguin Random House on their DK Alpha imprint, it's 256 pages and is available in hardcover and ebook formats.

I love Korean food but always felt somewhat intimidated and full of excuses: "It's too complicated", "the ingredients are hard to source", "it requires too much special equipment", and "is it culturally insensitive for a lily white Irish girl to even make Korean food?". This is an everyday cookbook for non-professional cooks who love delicious Korean food, simple as that. The author's accessible and friendly writing style inspires confidence and there's a definite "you can do it" vibe about the whole book.

It starts with a short author bio and pictorial introduction to Korean seasonings and ingredients. Some of these can be readily sourced at any well stocked international/Asian grocery store. Some of them will probably need to be ordered online.

The book continues in a logical fashion from foundational sauces, banchan (side dishes) to chicken, beef, pork, tofu, seafood, rice, noodles, soups & stews, kimchi (yay!), pancakes, and street food recipes. The chapters are packed with recipes (most with photographs) which are clear and easy to follow. Each of the recipes include sidebar with ingredients listed bullet point fashion (given in imperial/US standard measurements and some few metric equivalents), yields, and step-by-step instructions. Nutritional info is not included.

All of the recipes and assorted other information is provided in both English (transliterated), and Hangul (Korean characters). The book isn't bilingual, but it is well grounded in the traditional Korean names for dishes and ingredients. The author's wife & partner, Claire, provides interesting commentary and tips in text sidebars throughout, which added a lot to the read.

All in all, this is a beautifully written and presented Korean cookbook full of delicious food. The photography is top notch, the dishes are appealing and the recipes reflect a love and respect for culture and good food.

Five stars. Loved this one. A good choice for public library acquisition, home use and gift giving.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

“If you’ve always wanted to make your favorite Korean dishes at home, Simply Korean is for you. With streamlined techniques, minimal ingredients, and clear instructions, Aaron and Claire show you the easiest way to make fried rice, bulgogi, kimchi, and more.”

As I’ve been following YouTube’s Aaron and Claire for years, the second I came across this offering, my brain promptly supplied, “Don’t worry about it!” The author’s signature voice is stamped on every page, and I am here for it.

Seriously, this cookbook is a delight.

It’s beautiful, first of all. The pictures are both informative, visual appealing, and delicious-looking. Even if you cook zero things within its pages, this book will spark both joy, and gastric juices (too much?).

It’s also accessible. I know Aaron is a former chef, but this, unlike other cookbooks I’ve owned, makes me feel impowered, versus inadequate. I read a recipe and think, “I might not be able to match Aaron’s match-sticking ability, but I can totally do this.”

One of my favourite parts is the list of Korean Pantry Basics. If you don’t know where to start, start there.

I’ve tried a few of the recipes (my family was particularly taken with Dakgalbi (Spicy Chicken Stir-Fry), La Galbi (BBQ Short Ribs) and Dubu Gagnjeong (Sweet and Crunchy Tofu).

A few I’m looking forward to trying are Kimchi Bibim Guksu (Spicy Cold Kimchi Noodles), Kkwabaegi (Twisted Doughnuts) and having a make-your-own Gimbap (Seaweed Rice Rolls) party with the kids.

My only teeny-tiny criticism is that the main Table of Contents only has basic chicken/beef/seafood titles, where I prefer a list of recipes under each heading. This is partially redeemed at the beginning of each chapter, but I really do like to see the whole cookbook at-a-glance. It makes meal planning so much easier.

All in all, this book will be a stunning addition to my, and anyone’s, collection.

9/10

Thanks to NetGalley and DK Publishing for this sweet and spicy ARC.

Quick Summary: A mouth-watering gift to the eyes and a hearty, rich resource for the brain

My Review: Simply Korean: Easy Recipes for Kimchi, Noodles, Soups, and More by Aaron Huh was a gift, to be sure. I practically devoured it in one sitting. It was wholly captivating. I confess that it enticed me, tempting me with its tantalizing cuisine. The beauty of this book was that it really did make everything presented look so simple, in terms of preparation.

While I consider myself to be familiar, at best, with some Korean foods, I must say that I learned so much more. The pictures and instructions in the book were so helpful. As I read, I kept thinking that I really could do this. I could actually make the presented recipes come to life. Yum!

My Favorite Helpful Hints: I loved the essential ingredients and the measurements and conversion chart.

My Favorite Aha: I did not know that there were so many different kinds of kimchi or soy sauces.

Favorite Recipes...and the first I will try to make and master:

Gamja Jorim
Chicken-Mu
Korean Fried Chicken
Sweet and Spicy Sauce
Bap
Pa Kimchi
Yachaejeon

My Final Say: This book is a keeper. I loved reading the digital copy, but I cannot wait to get the hard copy in my hands. Also, I am happy to say that I will be following Mr. Huh and his wife on YouTube, thank you very much! Readers will certainly enjoy every single bite of this book. Guaranteed!

It's kind of surprising that cookbooks even exist. The internet is essentially an infinite well of recipes and you can google your way to anything from coq-au-vin to hakarl (fermented Icelandic shark, and if I were you, I'd stick to the coq-au-vin). And with the help of the Paprika app you can even remove good recipes from the abominable clutter of food blogs and have them rendered and stored in a useable form on your phone.

Anyway, cookbooks do still exist, and for good reason: it's pleasant and satisfying to sit down on the couch with a big book, looking at pictures of food and thinking about what you would like to cook next. I've never reviewed a cookbook before because I never really finish reading them, but I've spent enough time with this one to say that I enjoy it and if you're looking for a good way to get into cooking Korean food, it is an excellent place to start. The recipes (I've made six or seven of them so far) are simple and delicious, and my wife and children like them too (though I must admit that my attempt at making gimbap got real ugly).

I really enjoy Huh's whole approach. Since reading this book I've found his YouTube page and it is a delight. Aaron is amusing and unpretentious and I cannot imagine anyone being better at teaching entry-level Korean cooking, and Claire is cute and I enjoy hearing her explain why her husband's food is so good.

When requesting to read Simply Korean: Easy Recipes for Korean Favorites That Anyone Can Make, I did not realize that the cookbook was born out of a YouTube channel presented by the author. Though I do like getting recipes and ideas from the website, I typically pass on the cookbooks. This is because the author tends have commentary in the book that those who watch the channel would recognize and like. Personally, I like cookbooks that have personality, but more by way of interesting recipes and photographs.

That being said, Simply Korean is a good cookbook for those who are new to the cuisine. There is a good introduction, a focused section on essential ingredients, and a great chapter on foundational sauces. With recipe sections including Banchan (small side dishes served along with cooked rice in Korean cuisine), Chicken, Beef, Tofu, Rice, Noodles, Kimchi, and Street Food, among others, the author brings readers full circle through the cuisine. Overall, the layout was good and readers will enjoy exploring the nuances of Korean cuisine.

Disclaimer: I was given an Advanced Reader's Copy by NetGalley and the publisher. The decision to read and review this cookbook was entirely my own.

Love Korean food? It has enjoyed a surge of popularity in the last few years. Anyone who wants to learn to cook Korean food will want to pick up Aaron Huh’s Korean cookbook, Simply Korean: Easy Recipes for Korean Favorites That Anyone Can Make. This excellent cookbook has recipes for all of the classic popular dishes such as Bulgogi, Bibimbap, and Galbi, as well as dozens of mouthwatering not-so-well-known dishes.

The recipes are easy-to-follow and are presented in the traditional manner, so everyone can follow them whether a beginning cook, or an experienced cook. There are explanations at the beginning of the cookbook that covers the different ingredients that might not be familiar to most. The ingredients can be obtained at most Asian grocery stores, and with the popularity of Korean food, some mainstream regular grocery stores.
There is a beautiful photograph of almost every recipe, which makes it difficult to decide which recipe to make next. Korean food lovers will end up with a queue for preparing meals for weeks.

All told, anyone who wants to cook simple Korean foods will want to add this excellent cookbook their cookbook collection. Highly recommended.

Special thanks to NetGalley for supplying a review copy of this book.

This cookbook has some easy to do recipes. Has different kinds. Some common some a bit different. All compiled in an easy to follow style. I tried a few recipes & this book isn’t fool proof. Sometimes there questions I’ll have about something or what to do with some of the sauces. Wish there were more tips or explanations to some things. This isn’t the perfect cookbook for my needs as there are many banchan side dishes I was looking for in here. This definitely gives you a good start though. I also would never need a hotdog one personally, but I’m sure there are some who love that it’s added in. This has a great start for soups. I didn’t think there needed to be two types of marinated egg recipes. The kimchi recipe I don’t care for, but that’s only due to personal taste & preference. I’ll have to try some more recipes as I go. I originally rented this book from the library to preview if I wanted to buy it for a gift. Personally I’m doubting it has what I’m really looking for, but by no means does that mean it’s a bad cookbook. Often times cookbooks only have a handful of recipes a person really wants anyway. I like the creator as they make Korean home cooking, well simple, while also making it innovative.

First off, thanks to NetGalley and DK for this fantastic arc, and an extra thanks to DK for publishing this cookbook!! I've been watching Aaron and Claire's channel for a few years now, and having watched it grow from the slightly awkward beginner videos to what it is now, and with a cookbook to boot - I'm so happy for them! They've worked so hard (ok maybe Aaron a little more so haha) to get to this point and I'm really happy for and proud of them 🥲

These recipes all look so dang easy and quick, and a few I know already are delish from making them from the youtube channel! I love the guide to basic Korean staples at the beginning of this book, and I really appreciate how he always stresses to use what you have, not to go and buy some fancy ingredients you might only use once. The recipes are easy to follow, and the pictures are gorgeous! I don't buy many cookbooks as I tend to just look at them but not make anything, however I already know I'm going to be making many recipes from this book 😀

Excellent cookbook with so many good recipes and amazing pictures!

This cookbook checks both boxes that I believe makes a cookbook great.

1. It has approachable recipes. While there may be some specialized ingredients it isn't full of expensive and hard to find ingredients. Instead, you will find the recipes to be delicious, easy to make and most ingredients you will already have in your pantry or at a local grocer.

2. It has great pictures. Nothing is worse than a cookbook that doesn't have pictures of each dish. I want to know what it should look like and gain inspiration by flipping through the pages. This cookbook has a fantastic photo for each dish that had me marking page after page of delicious looking meals.

Every recipe I have tried thus far has been enjoyable and easy to make with some of the recipes, such as Cho Ganjang (Korean Vinegar Soy Sauce) quickly becoming a family favorite.

Highly recommended!

Are you looking to broaden your home cooking horizons beyond Mexican and Italian dishes? Look no further than Simply Korean, a Korean cookbook that is truly simple.

I have never cooked, and rarely eat, Korean food. But I’m tired of my usual dinner menu. This cookbook translates traditionally obscure ingredients into items at your neighborhood grocery. Many of the recipes used ingredients I already have at home. Other items were easy to substitute like thin-sliced carne asada for bulgogi meat. The recipes themselves also include westernized substitutions like cornstarch for glutinous rice flour.

Though none of the recipes included nutritional information or indicated special dietary restrictions, full-color photographs were provided. Overall, Simply Korean is an easy and inexpensive way to include some Korean food into your life. 4 stars!

As the title suggests, this book is full of simple Korean recipes that anyone can make. Although the recipes are simple, there is a ton of flavor packed into each one. This book is super easy to follow and with pictures for every single recipe, it's hard to look away! I want to eat it all! One thing about it that I really enjoyed was the feedback from his wife, Claire, throughout the book. I loved seeing her preferences and tweaks to some of the recipes. It offers more ideas to make the recipes your own like she has. The whole book has a very authentic, personal feel; like you're receiving recipes from a friend. This would be a great book for anyone who is starting their journey into cooking delicious Korean food!

I accessed a digital review copy of this book from the publisher.
This cookbook is above all, simple. It begins by introducing foundational ingredients that are not typical in western stores. The recipes start with foundational sauces, progressing to side dishes, chicken, beef, pork, tofu, seafood, rice, noodles, soups and stews, kimchi, pancakes, and street food. Each dish has a large clear picture to show the end result. The instructions are clear and simple.
I did notice that the food was heavy in green onions, something the author admitted would be so, and chilies. While I expected many of the dishes to have chilies, I did not expect so many. It is an issue for me due to allergy issues in the house.
This is a good book for any beginner who is interested in Korean food.

Not for the spice-adverse.

Simply Korean takes traditional Korean food and provides step-by-step instructions to complete them. With beautiful full-color photographs and excellent organization, this cookbook is a MUST for anyone who wants to bring Korean cuisine into their home.

The docked star is for difficulty finding ingredients and time spent on each dish. I understand that 'simple' cooking is incredibly relative, but even with straight-forward instruction these recipes are too demanding to become part of my everyday repertoire.

A great addition for anyone looking to diversify their skillset, however!

I enjoyed this well-written cookbook and bookmarked a number of recipes to try. It's a great introduction to Korean cooking, and I appreciated the clear explanation of Korean ingredients that might not be familiar to all readers. It was also useful that the majority of the recipes fit onto one page so that you don't have to flip back and forth. Everything I've tried so far has been spot-on and delicious! I live in Portugal with limited access to Asian food and ingredients, but most recipes in this book will be do-able for me. Gorgeous food photos, too!

Note: I received a review copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for my honest review. I was not compensated for this review.

I recently bought this. I have been a fan of the Aaron and Claire YouTube channel for quite a few years. I thought of getting Aaron's cookbook, as I wanted his recipes in hand in a quick and easy manner. This book caters to everyone's tastes in Korean food. It's got both spicy and non spicy dishes/versions of dishes. There is vegetarian dishes, chicken dishes, pork dishes and beef dishes. There are multiple recipes for kimchi. And my favorite, there is recipes for just sauces too! I love making my own dishes and sometimes I just want a good sauce to go with things. This book has that too! Overall, a very good deal! It also looks pretty in my library.

For fellow fans of the popular “Aaron and Claire” Youtube channel, we finally have many of those delicious recipes we’ve been introduced to bound all together in a gorgeous cookbook that we can now easily keep and access in our own kitchens.

For newcomers, don’t worry if you’re not in the know yet. Prior familiarity isn’t necessary, for without it you’ll still have this excellent collection of dishes that are laid out in easy steps, extremely manageable ingredient lists, mouth-watering photographs, and overall just does a marvelous job of fulfilling its mission of putting dishes in as close reach to home cooks as it possibly can.

Beautiful pictures throughout the book make me want to sample everything they have included. Bonus points for the Hangul characters above the recipes and especially the ingredients which makes it easier to find them in the Asian markets. This one also includes converted measurements so adaptable for US or metric kitchens. This is described as an easy-to-use practical cookbook and it seems easy enough for me to find the ingredients and make some of these tempting dishes. Highly recommended for those looking for something a little different, exotic, and tasty.
