Spotlight Video #2

Blank Tapes: A Spotlight Video Novel

Rate this book
A 90s nostalgia, friends to lovers novel from Melissa Brown, set in her Spotlight Video Series.

The year is 1995 and Marley Gallagher is obsessed with her new computer…and the guys she meets in AOL chat rooms—they’re the perfect escape from her introverted nature and strict upbringing. A townie, and a shy one at that, Marley is finally embracing a little independence as she moves into her first dorm. The chat rooms online offer her the chance to reinvent herself, and maybe fall in love in the process. The only problem is, she’s so focused on the guys on her computer screen, she doesn’t see the one whose right in front of her nose…her co-worker at Spotlight Video, Emmett.

Emmett Roberts has been in love with Marley since their first shift together. And it’s obvious to everyone but Marley. Not wanting to ruin their friendship, or make things really awkward if she turns him down, Emmett avoids asking her out in person. With a little help from his friends at work, though, he devises a plan to win her heart. But, when Marley discovers that her latest online love interest is actually her co-worker in disguise, will Emmett lose his chances with her altogether?

I really enjoyed this book. It was cute, funny, and gave me all of the nostalgia of the nineties that I could have hoped for. The romance also does have some 'steam' to it but that really was on the back burner compared to the rest of the story and I was more than okay with that.

As a child of the nineties who proclaims that it was the best decade to exist, this book gave me ALL of the feels when it came to pop culture references. I LOVED all of the references and it made me want to go rewatch all the movies that were mentioned. Along with that, this story brought me back to the nostalgia of renting movies and how much of an event it was. Now, we essentially have every movie at the touch of our fingers but back then, I think part of the excitement was hoping that there'd be a copy of the movie you wanted to see. I probably saw a bunch of movies that I now consider favourites solely because the movie I wanted to watch was unavailable.

This really was a sweet read and I will be keeping my eyes open for the rest of the series. For those that want a fun story that gives you a nostalgic blast from the past, pick this one up.

I could hear the Internet dialing up and the fabulous 90’s music playing in my head as soon as I started this book.
A total blast from the past that delivered!
Dial up Internet, amazing music and movie references and I’m swept back to the 90’s!
I love the cast of characters, they work at a college campus Video Store… remember those? I lived for Friday night and perusing the videos as the “big weekend “ event.
Marley and Emmett were secondary characters from the author’s previous book in this series.
I really love them and their adorable story, fraught with Marley’s “addiction” to the new online chat rooms. Sometimes romance seems better online, ya know?! They have a bit of hit and misses in person.
Chemistry, but awkwardness. Sigh. Loved it!
I absolutely adore a story where the characters are communicating in real life and unbeknownst to one or more of the people they also are communicating online, texting, etc.
I think it’s a super fun and sexy aspect of the story.
I love all the quirky and fun characters in this series.
I love their banter and really fun, interesting conversations so much.
It’s such a fun dose of nostalgia, I love this story, the previous one in the series and I am looking forward to more.
I will say the romance and spice level is less at the forefront than my usual romance reads, but I expected that going in and was totally fine with it.
I really enjoyed the clever quips and the very well timed nostalgia. It’s fresh, unique and so much fun!
It took me back PLUS the characters are so witty and entertaining.
It’s really delightful and made me smile so big! Loved it!

Had the pleasure of reading an ARC of this upcoming release by Melissa Brown and what a fun book this is! I haven’t read any of her other work (yet!) and I really enjoyed this read. This book is set in 1995 and I won’t reveal how old I was in 1995 but let’s just say I got and LOVED the pop culture references…AOL chat rooms, the music, The Rachel haircut, the movies…so very fun!

Marley and Emmett are coworkers and Spotlight Video and they each like each other but both are too shy to make the first move. Emmett and some co-workers devise a plan to use Marley’s interest in chat rooms to get to know her better. But is that the best way?

This is a really fun, sweet rom com. It’s I said I loved the pop culture references and there was fun character banter. There are a lot of coworkers to keep up with but they are fun. I wouldn’t say this book is clean but the spice level is super low. It’s a fun, cute book. I’ll definitely be reading more from this author.

If I was going to rate this book solely on the 90’s nostalgia, it would be a definite winner for me! VHS tapes, video rental store, bubble tape gum, AOL, nineties movies etc, gave this such a fun blast from the past feel.

As a romance novel, this just fell flat for me. I loved the whole idea behind Emmett and Marley’s story, but I didn’t feel the chemistry behind either character. Miscommunication isn’t my favorite in a storyline and unfortunately there is a lot of it in this one.

I loved the idea of a movie night with friends! Each person picks a couple of their favorite movies, putting them all in a bag. Then someone draws one out to watch & so on. A fun movie marathon with popcorn & snacks. This was probably one of my favorite parts in the book, each character would name a 90’s movie and why they picked it for the marathon.

I would definitely recommend for the 90’s nostalgia alone. Fun easy read.

It gave such 90's vibes ofc. the cover is the prettiest and that is what made me sign up for an ARC of this book and the fact that it is a friends to lovers trope.

Marley is really in love with her computer and is obsessed with the messaging apps where she can be someone she is eager to be. Being an introvert, texting someone is always better than face to face meet ups and even calls at times. And this was a perfect opportunity for her to make new friends and even to fins the love of her life.
In comes Emmett, the guy who has been in love with Marley ever since he saw her. He disguises himself and gets closer to her through chats. He did this cz she always saw him as a co-worker and nothing more. He was such a sweet guy. The texts they exchanged, the way they grew to love each other was so cute.
It got stagnant in-between, but once you cross that it gets interesting once again.

Oh and there is a scene mentioned in this book on FRIENDS and I was watching it while reading and the biggest coincidence was that it was the same scene which was in the book and it happened at the same time, both the actual scene and the one in the book. Literal goosebumps.

This book took me down memory lane and I loved every minute.

Set in a 90s-era video store, college-aged students live their best lives playing movie trivia and falling in love. Although this is the third book in the series, I was able to read it without any significant flaws in not knowing what was happening. I loved this book so much, that I immediately went and got the rest of the series and read them all within the next 24 hours!

Marley, our heroine, is OBSESSED with the all-new and exciting AOL chatrooms. The shy beauty feels like its the only place she can be herself and not have the judgment of meeting people face to face. Emmett our hero has had a MAD CRUSH on Marley since her first day on the job at the video store. But he doesn't think he has a chance with her... until he comes up with a plan to slide into one of the chatrooms to feel it all out.

I loved Marley and Emmett. This whole book just gave me all the feels. Highly recommend this book and Series!

It was cute and for me kind of nostalgic. I lived through the 90s and still remember a lot of the things they talk about in the story.

The romance itself was cute but a bit boring sometimes. I felt like reading it was taking way too long, especially because it seemed obvious what was going to happen. Even so, I enjoyed reading it.

Book two of the Spotlight Video Series delivers the 90s nostalgia. Dial-up internet, AOL Chat rooms, and bubble tape all add to an already lovable series. Marley and Emmett feed my soul. Their uncertainty about each other is innocent and endearing. Along with the Spotlight family, they find their way but the ride sure was fun.

Melissa Brown has cultivated the 90s vibe to perfection. Melissa builds worlds that pull you in as you read. Be it this series or her others, she is an author you MUST add to your reading list.

Melissa Brown has done it again! Blank Tapes is a wonderful, heart-squeezing, friends-to-smooching romance set in 1995. The Spotlight Video crew is back and better than ever! Melissa has a magical way of plucking the perfect pop culture references to pique your sense memories and send you back in time. You can practically smell the popcorn & VHS tapes the second you step into Spotlight. I adore the entire Spotlight group, but Marley and Emmett are my new faves!

“Because when it comes to love, when it comes to my cautious heart, she’s it for me.”

Emmett is the cinnamon roll book boyfriend you dreamed of in college. He has the passion of Dawson, the charm of Josh (minus the brotherly vibe), and the loyalty of Pacey in one deliciously sweet package. Marley is smart, a bit unsure of herself, and finding her way as she pursues her musical passions. The aspiring director and the musical genius have sparkling, sizzling chemistry. If only they could find the confidence to go after what they want.

Marley is hooked on the newly-launched online chat platform, AOL. As a shy introvert who has been burned by love, she has trouble navigating the world of college dating. So she seems to have found the perfect solution, meeting guys online. But can she look up from the screen long enough to realize true love may be right in front of her? Emmett has had a crush on his sweet, quiet co-worker for ages. Desperate to express himself before he loses her to instant messenger for good, he devises a plan to get her attention and win her heart.

Melissa Brown has outdone herself! Blank Tapes is a hysterical, heartwarming, slow-burn PG-13 romance. I love her storytelling, nostalgic tie-ins and her incredibly unique, endearing, lovable characters! If you’re a fan of nineties romcoms, “You’ve Got Mail” and delightful movie nerd banter, add Blank Tapes to your TBR now!

***ARC was given in exchange for an honest review***

Being a child of the 90s, I was really excited to read this book. I couldn't wait to be reminded of all things 90s. The cover is so pretty, that it was the reason why I wanted to sign up for this ARC.

VIDEO STORES. VHS TAPES. AOL CHAT ROOMS. BEANIE BABIES. 100 PERCENT NOSTALGIA.

Marley is a super shy girl with strict parents, who becomes obsessed with AOL. (Instant Messaging before Messenger/Texting become cool, in case you didn't know). Being an introvert, talking via text is much easier than talking to someone face to face, especially when it comes to talking about feelings.

Then there is Emmett, the boy who has been in love with Marley from the moment he laid eyes on her. Even though he isn't an introvert, he has trouble expressing his feelings, especially when it comes to Marley. He decides to hide behind a screen name online and try to get closer to Marley through AOL. He was hoping this would help break this ice between them and if/when she found out it wouldn't matter because they would have a strong enough bond.

Unfortunately, Marley finds out before Emmett has the chance to tell her the truth and she is not having it. As expected, Marley breaks things off and they don't speak for a while. Emmett has some apologizing to do, before he could even begin to think about getting back together with Marley. (I hate to say it, but I found Marley to be a bit immature at times. I absolutely loved all the characters and thought they were the perfect group of friends).

This book brought me back to a time that were filled with some wonderful memories growing up. (I was laughing at all the 90s references that I grew up with, that it just made me love this book so much).

This was such a cute 90s era romance and it builds so well off of Melissa Brown’s first book in the series “Be Kind, Rewind”.

This story is about Emmett and Marley, who have have been coworkers at Spotlight Video for the last year and also have had crushes on each other, but not done anything yet! Then Emmett finds out that Marley has become a fan of AOL chatrooms and meeting/talking to different men around the world in the rooms because she's shy and has been super sheltered. As a result Emmett gets a chat name and finds Marley on a room to chat her up and try to express his interest in her.

Of course a bit of chaos ensues because Emmett feels like he’s living a double sided life and then Marley is questioning how she can like a guy online and in real life. And it’s a will they or won’t they make if Marley will find out what Emmett’s done and if she’ll forgive him or not.

Both Marley and Emmett have complicated emotions and reasons for reacting the way they do. For college students they’re really mature and they know they’re figuring it out and that college is a bubbled time to make friends, mistakes and take chances on relationships.

This story was so cute and I cannot tell you how much I loved this 90s nostalgia romance. It’s easily one of my top 5-10 books I’ve read so far this year.

Thank you to Grey’s Promo for giving me a copy and Melissa Browning for writing such a wonderful book!

This book took me way back. I remeber when AOL came out and it was a huge deal. Talking to different people from who knows where. Of course, we didn’t know the dangers and people catfishing like we do now.

For Marley, it was a way to get out of her sheltered life. She was able to meet new and interesting people and she didn’t feel awkward like she did in real life. Marley works for Spotlight video with a boy named Emmett. These are our two main characters, but you get to read about others from the store that were in the first book. Emmett and Marley both like each other but are too afraid to actually do something about it.

Emmett’s roommate, Sully, and co-worker, Naomi, convince Emmett to talk to Marley online, but not let her know it was him. It was working out well, because he never talked about what he already knew about her. Although Marley was falling for JugBand75, she was also falling for Emmett again.

It was nerve wracking to see if Marley would figure it out. How would she react to him being the guy she is falling for online?

I love these two characters becasue in a way they do put themselves out there and in the end they become better versions of themselves.

Read Blank Tapes, it will take you back if you’re my age or it will teach you about how life was before netflix.

Snack enjoyed: nerds clusters

I enjoyed reading this so much and I am sprinting to read the other books in this series! Another coming August of this year *jaw drop* yeee!

The book is written in alternating perspectives of Marley and Emmett and I didn’t mind it at all. The progression of the relationship is a sweet one, with its hiccups here and there but Emmett is a romantic one, hard to say no to that!

I’m a sucker for 90s nostalgia, I am a 92 baby so I got a good dose in my very influential growing years. The nick at nite reference got me laughing! And I did love some AOL instant messaging in middle school. Ah mannn talking to crushes, passive aggressive away messages….. sweet sweet memories!

I loved the friend group in this book a fun bunch for sure! Bert and Ernie *giggle* Hannah is the real mvp of friends!

Overall a fun read! I just enjoyed everything about it! Makes me want to move and apply to their Spotlight video store 😆

another classic rewind romance

Another great classic rewind romance taking us to the 1990’s era. One of my favorite time frames to read. The gang at Spotlight Video are at it again in this second installment of the series. I got to say it was a great read.

Do you remember dial up internet and the AOL “You got mail”? Well Marley loves AOL and it’s chat rooms. She is obsessed. It. Is an outlet, a way to be confident, especially when you hide behind the keyboard.

Emmett has been in love with Marley since she started working at Spotlight Video. He is too afraid to ask her out. Especially when you can’t compete with the chat room guys she talks to.

But when Emmett takes it to the internet things could not go more wrong. When it rains it pours. Right?

The characters I’m this series are amazing. I love all the movie conventions and games they play. It really is a nostalgic read. It reminds me of the good ol’ days when life was much simpler.

Overall this book is a fun and energetic read. It has comedy, fun energy and romance. It is a wonderful read and I would recommend to anyone wanting to read something old but new.

Guarantee that you will be transported back in time when reading this novel. I mean, VHS, Video stores, Bubble Tape. Literally a time machine. Here you have two co-workers who have become good friends. They both don’t know how the other feels but both think it’s unrequited. And that is where the story begins. While Marley is looking for the right guy, Emmett is just looking at Marley. Both are a part of a close knit group of friends and the dynamics are just all over the place (in a good way). This story takes you back to the 90’s and for anyone living in that time will appreciate this novel. Not only do you get a story from a group of friends, you get a love story that connects you to your own 90’s memories. Extremely nostalgic. I mean, I’m 100% sure there are plenty out there that don’t even know what dial up or AOL is. Haha. I think this setting fits perfectly for this story. Although, I did wish there was more uphm from the plot, I did enjoy the friendship and the overall aspects of the story. I felt that there could have been more to the conflicts and character development but as I mentioned, still a good read. I loved the way Emmett and Marley connected and how it wasn’t always about having to have this crazy/specific personality in order to be with someone you want. I think this novel was fun and definitely brought back a lot of memories.

The dial up is strong with this one! So many memories of the early 90’s when the internet was new, email was exciting (You’ve got mail!) and secret identities were possible with online chat rooms. Marley and Emmett have maintained secret crushes for almost a year, working together as friends may not cut it anymore. Emmett decides to make a risky move that may or may not harm their friendship. The crew is attempting to help by offering advice while others are trying to stay out of it. Aside from the crazy love lives of the video store the debates are hysterical. Favorite actors? Favorite 80’s movie? Favorite R rated movie? The list is endless, but the quotes from Dutch are spot on. I wonder if Brown rewatched all those movies or if she already had them memorized. I’m always thrilled to receive an early copy and leave my honest voluntary review.

*Thank you to Melissa Brown, Grey’s Promotions, and Lady Boss Press for the advanced reading copy of Blank Tapes. This review contains my own thoughts and opinions.*

Blank Tapes is full of 90s pop culture nostalgia is just so freaking cute!

Marley and Emmett work together at Spotlight Video and are nursing big crushes on the other - but neither think they have a chance. They were great as friends but completely adorable as a couple. I smiled so hard!

I also related to Marley so much, as a college kid from the Chicago suburbs in the late 90s who was very sheltered and naïve. I loved seeing more of the rest of the Spotlight crew, too

As a midwestern college kid in the 90s - loved the Pokey Stix reference. I miss Gumby’s Pizza. And now I want an order with some Ken’s Ranch dipping sauce.

I definitely recommend this one if you love some 90s nostalgia or just want to enjoy a great romance!

Grab some bubbletape, your favorite Beanie Baby and get ready to relive the 90s!

Spotlight Series by Melissa Brown has me reliving my 20s and some of my best memories! That alone is reason enough to love this book, but it’s so much more than a nostalgia rom-com!

This series is really about friendships during those coming of age years and it sprinkles so much 90s trivia throughout that I couldn't help smiling, dancing and singing while reading this book.

Emmett and Marley are just 2 of the most adorably awkward couples I've ever read. There were many times I wanted to reach through the pages and tell them to "Snap out of it!", and just kiss already!! Lol

This is a mostly clean romcom so you won't be getting the spice you may expect and hope for, but I'm here to say it was totally worth the read!!

MC: Marley & Emmett

Dual POV, slow burn, RomCom, HEA, 90s nostalgia

Marley and Emmett work together at a video store together. They’ve both been into each other since they first met but neither is willing to make a move. Marley has recently started talking to people on AOL and brags about how she’s always talking to different guys. That gives Emmett an idea. He starts talking to her online, but she doesn’t know it’s him. He says it’s just to build confidence but things continue on, causing Marley to get hurt in the process.
This was a cute, lighthearted 90s throwback romantic comedy. I thought the premise was cute and loved all the references to things I remember as a 90s baby. Marley got a little annoying at times, reacting really harshly over what Emmett did but then getting upset when he didn’t run right back to her.

This series is soooo much fun! I find myself reading lines to my husband and we laugh at the 90 references. Emmett has a major crush on Marley and goes out of his way to get her attention. His plan takes a turn that backfires a little and he has some apologizing to do. I love This group of friends! They work at a movie rental store together and there are so many laugh out loud moments. They have amazing movie debates that I truly enjoy. Book two was just as enjoyable as book one. I do have to say, Marley was a little immature for me and I wanted to reach though the book and shake her but she finally turned around. I can’t love these characters more than I already do. I’m already looking forward to reading the next book.

The Spotlight Gang is all back and better than ever!

Modern way of dating set in the 90s delivers in the friends to lovers rom com. Marley was the new girl at Spotlight who lived with her head in the computers. She was almost addicted to chat rooms, she spent more time chatting on AOL than noticing Emmet. Emmet has always had a crush on Marley and has had hard time to build the courage to ask Marley out. Emmet is the absolute sweetest he wanted to make sure Marley felt comfortable with the group and while taking her feeling in to account. Marley is young and naive, at times she found it hard to find her confidence. Marley and Emmet together were quirky they complimented each other well. The ending was a sweet moment of perfection.

Gah, I CANNOT get enough of this series and these characters!
First, let me add again...I was the same age at the date this series took place. It is so relatable and so very relevant of that time.
Can we also talk about the fact that Emmett Otter's Jug band Christmas is soooooo nostalgic to me on so many levels and I literally thought that I was the only person that knew what it was. Until now.
I am not a spoiler of books but I will say, I truly feel anyone can relate to the story. We all fit into the storyline one way or another. And I am HERE FOR IT!
As always, I devoured Melissa's words and I can't wait for more! Now, I am off to watch Singles, because that one would have been one of my employee pics!

I am in love with this series! I have never been so happy as I was in the 90's and it was just like that! I worked in a video store and went to college, in my world the boyfriend who was lacking. But, Marley and Emmett are made for each other, their journey has some detours and in the end it is so fun!
References to When Harry met Sally (my favorite ever!), movies and all the 90's culture. It is so fun to read this book and at the same time sweet because this couple is young and sensitive.
I just loved it!

This is my first book by this author and I was pleasantly surprised with this quirky story about life in the 90’s. It reminded me so much of my youth and Emmett and Marley are so great you can’t help but fall in love with them. All the characters were interesting in their own way and it was so much fun reading all the references to the 90’s. I definitely have to read more of the books in this series. Cannot wait for the next book and to see what this author has in store of us. A real treat!

RTC but I haven’t as much as I have had while reading a book in a while. This book just hit all of my buttons. This book is set in 1995 and contains many elements of nostalgia. And I love anything that gives me a good dose of nostalgia so everything about that worked for me. I loved how this book really sounded like it happened in the 1995, it felt like such a relatistic description of that period to me. And I loved reading that, so much. And the romance in this book was super cute and swoony, so that also did it for me.

I received an ARC of this book and this is my honest opinion

A great addition to the Spotlight Video series! If you were a teenager/young adult this book will bring up so many memories for you! I laughed throughout most of this book! I love all the characters so much! The banter between them all is amazing! This was a fast read for me! Once I started I had a hard time putting it down! I loved Emmett and Marley so much! This one was a bit of a slow burn and not a lot of spice! This one is a must read! I can’t wait to read the next book!

OMG … video store, VHS tapes, AOL Chat Rooms, and the beloved Beanie Babies. Eek the nostalgia pours from this story. It is a messy young love kind of tale. It is filled with missteps and miscommunication.

Even though you experience imperfect characters, plan to fall in love with all the hilarious and mayhem. Emmett and Marley are the best couple and have a tribe surrounding them that makes this book awesome. One of my favorite things is all the movie references peppered throughout this wonderful story. Also did I just experience the creator of the emoji? Eek.

This story is five star worthy just for the fact it takes me back to some sweet days. Happy Reading Everyone! XOXO
