Matsuri Hino was born on January 24 in Hokkaido. She was a bookshop keeper who one day decided to become a manga artist, and all of nine months later, in 1995, she published her first manga title, Kono Yume ga Sametara (When This Dream Is Over), in Japan's LaLa DX magazine.
I'm a little creeped out by how the whole brother/sister romance thing is played like a ship we're actually supposed to be behind. Not just with Yuki, but now in that bonus chapter with her parents too. I mean, seriously? I really hope Yuki ends up with Zero because, you know, he loves her, she loves him, and he's not related to her. And Kaname is kind of a manipulative bastard, whereas Zero is a guy who genuinely cares about others more than himself. I guess I don't see how this is honestly even in question. If it doesn't end up Yuki/Zero, I'll have serious questions about the author's mental stability.
This one was mostly a blur. Not much happened. Since I took a break in between reading Vol. 9 and Vol. 10 I was also pretty lost. The Kaname and Yuki [spoiler] thing still really bothers me but I truly do want to finish reading this series this second time around. I hope the next one is better!
This manga series was absolutely amazing!! If you’ve never read a manga before and don’t know what to try first, Vampire Knight is the perfect choice.
The action is constant, the characters are perfectly blended, the artwork is absolutely amazing and the plot is original and addicting!
I loved all of the characters! I couldn’t decide who was best for Yuki. As much as I loved the tortured soul that Zero harbored, Kaname is steamy and swoon worthy. I loved the scenes where Yuki and Kaname would hold each other, but there is something about Zero and how he is depicted that you can’t help fall for him.
Vampire Knight is a must read. Truly a great manga series that should not be missed.
For me, this series jumped the shark two volumes ago, but now that my expectations are adjusted, I think I'll continue to enjoy the story to the end. Thankfully, my library carries it, so I won't have to buy any more volumes; I'm planning on trading in the volumes I have bought over the past few years to fill out my collection of Ouran. :D So, it's not a complete loss, and I do enjoy the story overall. BUT -
**Warning - griping ensues along with spoilers if you're not caught up through volume 9**
...Vampire Knight's just not the story I thought it was when I started out reading it. I was extremely disappointed with the revelation that Yuki has always been a vampire, and not only that, but she's a vampire princess! It just ruined the dynamics of the story for me. I really enjoyed her as a heroine, with her spunk and independence. And, what made her so appealing besides those characteristics was that she was supposedly a human girl who could hold her own among supernatural beings all around her. There were hints that there was something more to her - her acrobatics, for example - so this has been a plot twist coming for some time. I just hoped for some other explanation than that she's a vampire. Cliche.
Kaname has also lost some ground with me. So much of the appeal of him was the mystery. Now we're learning too much about him (I suppose it was inevitable), and his motivations are almost too commonplace for the likes of him.
Zero...Zero, the underdog, I've been rooting for him all along; but his angst has reached a whole new level. I can't blame him entirely - the girl he adored turns out to be what he abhors the most in life - a vampire - but still...I'd like him to stop being so moody. I'm holding out hope that he'll get his act together soon.
All complaints aside, this story is not bad, not bad at all. I'm harsh on my critique because I'm annoyed that my expectations weren't met, but all things considered, it's an engaging, intriguing story with interesting likable characters. Vampire Knight is certainly a superior alternative to that gosh awful Twilight series.
This manga is getting too weird for me. And honestly, for the most part, the plot is hard to follow and a lot of things don't make sense. There are many flashbacks in this volume, but the transition between past and present is hard to notice and the drawings of the characters in the past look almost similar to their present states, thus making it almost impossible to notice the change.
I keep wondering why I'm continuing this anymore. I'd like to call it the 'seraph syndrome'. Inspired by how I haven't been able to let go of Seraph of the End either.
Anyway, chapter by chapter reactions under the spoiler tag.
A volume or two ago, Hino implied that the end of the first major arc of Vampire Knight was coming to a close soon. This tenth book, with its flashbacks somewhat akin to a "recap episode" and a series of partings, very much feels like the end of a first act. I can only assume the second sequence will start in the next book, especially since there were 10-12 pages of filler at the end of this one.
As has been my usual for this series for a few volumes now, I'm torn between genuinely enjoying the blood-drenched melodrama of it, and being frustrated by how incoherent--and sometimes boring--it is. I've got to admit that this quote was a great send-off between two major characters, though: Way to have your cake and eat it too, !
There's a decent standalone episode featuring Ruka and Kain toward the end of this volume. It'd be interesting to skim back through the previous volumes to see hints of these characters' unrequited loves that are made explicit here. I can barely tell Aido and Kain apart as it is, so who knows...
It's tempting to just finish reading this series in a big ol' dramathon, since I have all of it. But after reading five volumes in fairly quick succession, I'm feeling more sarcastic about it than receptive to it for now. I also doubt I'll remember anything but the bare minimum regarding Yuki, Kaname, and Zero if I take more than a few days' break from it, but that's okay. The rest isn't particularly worth the trouble of keeping in my increasingly unreliable memory banks.
Not so much transition as denouement after the outrageous awesomeness of the last volume, but so many story elements were brought to an end in the last volume that we're left panting for breath and sorting through the wreckage before the next story arc. Not sure where it's all going but things certainly seem creepier.
Things are really getting strange in this volume. I hate how Zero and Yuki have to hate each other all becuase Zero has a complex and Yuki is a pureblood who is obsessed with Kaname, who happens to be her brother which is even more bizzar. The earlier volumes were better in my opinion, but I want to see this series through to the end. At least the senate is gone and the vampire hunters might go away for a bit. I still can't believe Headmaster Cross used to be a vampire hunter AND associated with Yuki's mom. For some reason I still can't wait to find volume 11.

I absolutely loved this particular final chapter of Part one/Season one. This manga was much different from the tv show and it was a wonderful change! Every act was done differently and I'm much happier with the way the characters played out by the end of this book. I'm excited to re read the next set. A job well done as an Author!

I have always really enjoyed these books but this one seemed very confusing. It didn't seem like the story went anywhere or told you anything new in this volume. Not sure when volume 11 comes out but I will hope that it has more enlightement in it.
This volume mostly consists of characters reminiscing about details we already knew, just told in slightly different ways; I didn't feel any of it added to the overall storyline.
I didn't enjoy this one as much as I have the others. It fell really flat and felt super boring to me. It's almost as if the series was running out of steam or needed some filler to move us onto the next book. I really hope the next one picks up because I was really enjoying the finale. I could have seen the series ending with this book though.
I never did finish this series so I've decided to do so. I love the characters and the drama but the manga as usual is disjointed and hard to follow. I'm not always sure of what I'm looking at in some of the pictures and usually I decide it's supposed to be nebulous because there is a transition going on. There were a number of flashbacks to earlier times in this volume and Yuki's mother played a key role in those.
Not even gonna lie... I'm slightly creeped out by the whole brother-sister romance that is going on and that the author presents like a ship that we're actually supposed to be behind. Also the bonus chapter with her parents... I don't even want to talk about it. I still have hope that Yuki ends up with Zero because he truly loves her without certain conditions (unlike Kaname), she also loves him and we'll... they're not related in any way. As said before in a review, I like Kaname as a character buttt NOT with Yuki, since he is quite a manipulative red flag, while Zero is actually a guy who I feel like genuinely cares more about people he loves/likes that he cares about himself. He is ready to protect what aligns with his morals and go an extra mile for the people involved and loved.
Honestly, I am struggling to even see how Yuki and Kaname were even turned into "a thing" by the author. To be completely frank, if it won't be Yuki-Zero in the end, I will seriously question the author's mental stability and health.
I think things are starting to clear up more in this volume but once the dust settles I think this series will be back on track for me. Zero points his gun at Yuki and vows to kill all purebloods, including her. And Kaname is not having that. But Yuki says as long as Zero has a will to live, she's ok being his enemy. Ugh. There is a Ruka flashback that delves into her obsession with Kaname and shows how dark and brooding he was as a young one. Kaname tells everyone he killed the Senate and the Hunters are not impressed. Kaien is also in hot water for defending the vampires. And that's really it for this volume. I miss the tension between the characters and the drama of it all. I think this fight arc has finally wrapped though and I'm interested in where the story will take off now.
