When Allison’s lonely life finally shatters, she finds herself becoming embroiled in the lives of two very different women. In The Constant Progression of Clouds, each is trying to deal with distressing life circumstances of her own, but as their worlds become entwined, they band together to become “different sisters,” which leads to challenges, dangers, revelations, grief, and joy that none of them had ever experienced before.
After she loses her baby, Allison sees her marriage falling apart, her teenage daughter becoming more and more troubled, and her job disintegrating. She contemplates ending her life, but her new neighbor, Logan, teaches Allison ways to cope and helps her try to put her life back together. As part of that effort, Allison decides to become a Big Sister and mentor to Micah, a Black teenager, whose mother abandoned her family five years earlier. Micah is struggling to fit into a world in which she doesn’t really belong, which becomes more and more evident as her dangerous boyfriend pressures her to do things she does not want to do. Like Allison, she is trying to figure out who she is and how to survive.
These three women join forces and come to love each other deeply. They support each other through fears and challenges and celebrate successes as they navigate the emotional upheavals, the roadblocks, the dangers, and the disasters on the road to overcome their monsters.
