Taking inspiration from the fable of the Hare and the Tortoise, internationally renowned trainer Matt Little recognizes that there is no fast path to success.
This is a self help kind of book , the author Matt Little takes inspiration from the hare and the tortoise to find ways, tips , hints and help to your path for success.
There are some great tips in here and bits from throughout the book that you can use to help inspire you and bits that can help at moments in your life that might just need a bit of direction. Even though Matt Little is a tennis coach so much of the book can be adapted to lots of different situations.
I did find that it was a dip in and dip out of book , but suited me fine, I didn't find it a patronising type of book like some of these can be. A good and interesting read !
2,5 stars; This was ok, not good or great. Playing the long game, moving through life slowly and attentively has its advantages, but don’t expect a thorough scientifically backed expose, rather it is a compilation of personal anecdotes and musings on life lessons learned by the personal trainer of tennis player Andy Murray.
This is a great enlightening read that can be used as a useful tool by anyone from any walk of life. It also includes a foreword by tennis star – Andy Murray.
The Way of The Tortoise is in 3 parts. Part 1 is The Way of The Tortoise so readers understand what that actually means in practical terms. Part 2 is called “Tortoise Goes To Boot Camp” where readers can delve deeper into the aspects mentioned in part 1. Then “Tortoise Boot Camp” where the book concludes. There are also practical exercises for people to try out and some questions they can answer to see what their outcome is and where they sit in this way of life etc. The Way Of The Tortoise is a way of life. The book shows there really is something quite enlightening in that Aesop fable -The Hare and the Tortoise. Although The Way Of The Tortoise shows the life of getting to the top, although it of course has parts that talk about tennis and other sports, it is much more than that and has skills and advice for anyone from any walk of life. It inspires to follow and understand this way for anything and everything that anyone may embark on doing in their life. Everywhere, we see success as though it just happens over night, but the reality is, on the whole, it’s a lot of work for years before-hand. This book however reminds us why the slower lane is actually good and healthy. The Way Of The Tortoise is a way of life. This book however reminds us why the slower lane is actually good and healthy. The book is also about determination and resilience and showing that you may not make it into exactly what you want first off, but you can find different ways to do what you love. That’s what Matt Little has done and that is what makes this book, in my opinion inspirational. It shows a truth of how life can be and how it can be challenging and because of this truth and the fact everything didn’t just happen for Matt Little shows a groundedness that is often not shown.
The book focuses on skills anyone in any profession and in any sort of personal life can use and also shows the differences in traits between a hare and a tortoise way of life. It is spectacularly interesting working out if you’re a hare or a tortoise and which sort of tortoise you are. It turns out I am most likely to be a tortoise and this book is pretty validating. It also goes into different sorts of tortoise traits in people and what each type needs, which is very interesting. The book then also goes into how to become a “Winning Tortoise”, which I am sure many people will find helpful.
In part 2 – “Tortoise Goes To Bootcamp”, it shows ways to sharpen skills and how to get into the “Tortoise mindset” and why this way is sustainable and a way of winning. It talks about the importance of soft skills and goes more into the nuances of these as well as developing teams to be more like tortoises. It also goes into being able to work under pressure and dealing with failure. It also goes into how to align yourself well and to be connected with people, as well as drawing up future plans and strategising, managing conflict etc. It also talks about leading by taking action, however it also reminds people to take care of themselves and their loved ones. The book also goes into a 0-10 year plan and further years into the future and goes into detail about what seems like a slow game and why there are advantages to this.
Part 3 – The Tortoise Bootcamp offers a terrific conclusion and one that is positive and gives an element of hope. It also validates, as does the rest of the book, that way of life that is “The Way Of The Tortoise” that may be a life that is being lived, but may not have realised it is this particular way and that this way is actually okay enough.
It’s a very well structured book with many aspects that so many people will be able to implement into their own lives. The book is very interesting and has a lot of sense within it and is easy to follow. It’s also good for dipping in and out of.
Mocno polecam!
one thing that I love about these type of self help books that they can be read in one sitting if you wish, but also come back to whenever you feel like you need the inspiration. I like the freedom of having both of those options while reading such a thought provoking book and especially one of the self help kind. I think that this quality helps in allowing the message of the author to fully sink in and this is experienced through Little’s work. I was interested in everything the author had to say and I was greatly interested in the tennis coaching that Little does. I am a follower of tennis and I think Little’s position as being a coach really does lend itself to expressing the main message in this book.
I really liked the format of this book as it made all of what Little was portraying more accessible, especially for future reference. There were interactive parts to the novel with a quiz, activities and questions. They all seemed to be thoughtfully placed and allow the reader to implement what Little was saying in respect to their own life and situation. A lot of the advice offered is transferable.
Overall, this was an enjoyable self help book and one that I am sure will remain useful to me. I like to keep these books handy so when any situation arises where I need advice, it’s like I have the answers piled and waiting to be read. I have realised that tabs are my best friend when reading such books. Also, how beautiful is the cover? This book is as beautifully made as it is written.
This book is such a breath of fresh air, promoting the act of slowing down to get ahead whilst using plenty of sport-related anecdotes from industry renowned trainer, Matt Little himself. I really appreciated the tone the author took with the book, showing that all things come to those who wait and put in the work. The encouragement readers receive from the author is pretty incomparable to many other self-help books, and he really does cater for every type of person with those crucial 'Tortoise' traits.
I feel anyone wanting to better themselves in any aspect of life will get something valuable out of this book, and I found it incredibly useful, enjoyable and informative. The way the book is written and how friendly the author comes across through his words makes it feel like you’re speaking face to face, or that the information included in the book is tailored to you and how you need to grow and adapt. It really is quite spectacular! Whether you’re interested in Matt Little’s success and how he got there, or you’re keen to take a refreshing direction in your own life with proven strategies, this book is the perfect one for your shelf!
This book has enabled me to put my best self forward to have the motivation, determination and commitment to better myself in my job role. Since reading this it’s given me the opportunity to have the drive to want to learn and develop. This is definitely one I’ll recommend with the people I lead and other leaders within my region.
I’m so grateful to have had the opportunity to read this just as I’m leaving one job to go into a complete different field. Mindset is everything, once you have the correct mindset you can do anything to reach and locate your dreams.
Not only do a lot of people struggle to set their own goals they find it extremely difficult to reach them. This book completely educates you on how to be more resilient and gain the energy you need to drive you.
I loved getting more connected to the author by learning about his own experiences. I loved the examples throughout and also the techniques and strategies to try and improve from. This book was brilliant.
A slightly different approach to personal development, as it is rooted in working with athletes.
The author distinguishes two approaches to matters, life, which are based on differences in the characteristics of animals: the tortoise and the hare. The advantages and disadvantages of both animals are compared and translated into human actions. A test is also included, indicating which features we are guided by to a greater extent and what can be improved and what can be useful.
The author focuses on developing the tortoise's predispositions and convinces that thanks to them we can achieve lasting success and make profound changes.
The guide is written in simple language and combines theory with examples in a pleasant way.
This book is about self reflection and can be read as a whole book or can be used to dip in and out when needed.
The author explains to the reader you don't have to be in a rush to be a success....slow, steady is also important. Following the tortoise and the hare.....
Mind over matter, setting small goals and resilience is key. I've loved learning more about myself and would highly recommend this book
Little takes the old fable of 'the tortoise and the hare' and applies the lesson to his own life and the modern aspirational professional. He provides advice on the development and use of soft skills in the workplace. The advice is useful and approach interesting.
From the outset, this book looks like it’s going to be about tennis…but a lot of what Matt says can be applied to any situation.
The main message of the book is that you don’t have to go fast to get ahead. Sometimes going slow, making connections and working your way to the top at a steady pace is best.
There was a lot of self reflection in the book but that didn’t detract from the messages being conveyed. Self reflection is a big part of self-development and finding out what may have gone wrong, or what you have done right.
There is a quiz in the book to find out if you are a tortoise or a hare and then there is a weekly plan to help you ‘be more tortoise’. It’s the style of book that you can dip in and out of or use for reference rather than read religiously cover to cover.
I haven’t yet finished due to moving house and receiving the book at a late date. However, from what I have read so far, I am loving it and very intrigued. It is very eye opening, honest and relatable in some aspect or another.
I think for someone who wants to work on themselves; better themselves or just have a focus on life, this would be a great book to read.
This is me who hasn’t read a lot of the book but this is my take on the chapters I’ve read so far.
Looking forward to a proper review in the future when I have finished the read. I wonder if my thoughts will change any?
Thanks to @lovebooktours for allowing me on your book tour and to Matt Little for allowing me a wonderful copy of your book!
