Who knew freshman year in college would be so complicated?
Dacia doesn't believe in prophecies, but when she starts living her nightmares, she can't help but wonder if she's wrong.
Strange things have always happened in her presence—unexplainable fires, ground-shaking tremors, inexplicable weather changes. People in the small town of Bittersweet avoid her, and in her own home, her parents fear her.
The only person who doesn't make her feel like an outcast is her best friend, Cody Hawks. Around him, she is free to be herself.
Desperate for a new start, Dacia is excited to go to college, leaving everyone but Cody behind. However, when her powers surface in class, she finds herself a pawn in a demon's plot to take over the planet.
Plunged into a world where magic exists and monsters are real, Dacia must learn to control her powers and find a way to return the demon to the Abyss.

Mandi Oyster dreams of living in a world where dragons and unicorns abound. For now, she lives in Southwest Iowa with her husband, two children, four cats, and two chinchillas. By day, she works as a Digital Prepress Supervisor for a local printshop. By night, she makes stories come to life.
A good indie-author YA standalone fantasy, though there is a series of these books.
I did my main review on amazon UK and Instagram.
I won't be writing in-depth reviews on GR anymore as I'm no longer enjoying writing them. I'll still be reading but my reviews will likely be a few words or just a star-rating.
Dacia is different. Strange things happen in her presence and everyone seems to shy away from her in fear or repulsion. 'A freak of nature. A mistake. An anomaly.' That's how she is seen even by her own parents who fear her. The only constant in her life is her best friend, Cody Hawks.
Going away to college Dacia gets a second chance. A clean slate and the chance to make a few friends. If she can control her emotions and keep bad things from happening that is. But trouble seems to follow close on Dacia's heels and enemies threaten to destroy her new found peace. And if that weren't enough, terrifying nightmares plague her dreams and new powers she lacks any control of emerge. Not a good combo when it lands you in the dean's office. Except that Dacia doesn't get expelled, the way she expected, but finds an ally, friend and mentor instead. And she is told she has a vital role in a prophecy involving a demon hell-bent on taking over the world.
Of course she doesn't believe it. How could she after being called so many names all her life? How could anyone believe they were good at something when constantly told they were a waste?! And that is the main hurdle Dacia will have to scale. After all, how can one become a hero, when they can't even consider they might be destined for it? How can you achieve something, when you're convinced you're unworthy and will fail?
Dacia's tale is one that had me invested from the very first page and kept me hooked up to the very end. My heart went out to a little shunned girl and I yearned to give her a big hug. I may have also wanted to beat the shite out of a few brats at one time, and got caught with a smile on my lips at others. The book is not perfect and could do with a few tweaks here and there. Some things seem to happen a bit to conveniently at times and others could do with more explanation, while Dacia's powers seem to be a bit too great for my liking. But the plot is intriguing and mysterious, the monsters are properly creepy while the romance is sweet and I couldn't help but root for Dacia and Cody alike.
And let's be honest here. Not many books make you want to reach between the pages and actually trash someone. Or give a big hug. This one did and KUDOS to the author for pulling that off for me.
But what I loved the most was the underlying message you get between the lines.
Follow your dreams. Make your own reality. Don't let the doubt win.
Stand strong and hold your ground, keep going even when those around mock you and say you'll fail. Dust yourself off and try again, despite the fear. Be brave and believe in yourself.
If you like YA Fantasy with a meaning give this one a try. It's really worth your time.
Happy reading everyone and remember sometimes you 'just need some faith'
I might be a little biased, but I have read this book several times and loved it all of them!
Well, not really.
Writing is a little more complicated than that. Sometimes, when I read it, I thought, "Oh, my God. This is so good!" Other times, I thought, "Why did I bother? This is terrible. I need to throw it all away right now."
But that last one, that's doubt and anxiety, and it can be crippling and terrifying. You can't let that voice win ... EVER. Fight back against it, and show it who's really in charge.
Follow your dreams. Make your own reality. Don't let the doubt win.
This is an amazing first book in what promises to be an amazing series! A well written story filled with magic , prophecies, adventure and a touch of romance. Dacia is relatable and likeable and the author has done a great job with her reactions and experiences to make them more realistic. Dacia’s friends old and new support and encourage her and help her face her fears and the fight to come and I have to say I look forward to reading more!
A great YA FANTASY full of adventure, magic, and strong main character than you can’t help but love. This book gave me some old school Buffy the vampire slayer vibes! The read was fast paced and kept me turning the pages to find out what happened next.
First of all, I liked how the Author crafted the main character, very relatable to anyone. Her accidental house burning and the loss of her baby brother, very sad but compelling. All she wanted was a new start and college might had been it…or not.
What would happen if you encountered Nefarious, our villain in the story and had not a clue what to do?
How do you vanquish such evil even with the help of your gifted powers? I would be totally at a loss like the main character. The author here gives the main character a very believable and realistic human trait.
The story flows at a moderate medium pace, but don't let that fool you, because of the twists the author cleverly crafted. It kept me going back to the book as soon as I found some extra free time. I had to keep on reading to find out how the plot was solved.
As I mentioned above, I was a tad lost (like the MC) without a clue or recourse to solve the story plot. ( a good dose of reality here) I know the author offered a hint but I … missed it…LOL. So, the end was entirely unexpected, which in my humble opinion was very refreshing.
I loved Cody's selflessness. Samantha's clear head and Sarah's mentorship. Together they bring meaning to Dacia's life, our protagonist. It is overall a story of friendship and trust. The author makes a good job of describing life, idiosyncrasies, and rules inside some college dorms along with the expected bullying most schools count on. But let’s not forget the author also gives us a very romantic love story between Cody and Dacia.
I was very pleased with the originality of the story plot despite the cliché part of being the chosen one. (But that is why I read the book in the first place!) Dacia's journey of discovery and trials captured my imagination.
The story is lighthearted and fun to read. I gave it 5 stars because the story is very original, and the main character has great potential in this Series. Also is well written with no grammatical errors. This is a very clean and entertaining fantasy story. I highly recommend it for impressionable young teens with a good versus evil theme.
This book can be a standalone, but I am already looking for the next adventure. A Pegasus and a dragon… what could go wrong?
What a fun book for the younger part of the YA crowd! It has a college setting but I think much younger readers would love this. Rounding this up to 5 stars because of the crisp dialogue, catchy concept, and fun characters. I love a clean (appropriate for a young audience), magical read and this totally delivered. Only thing I wanted more of was hooks to keep the story line and breaks between scenes and chapters really moving, but I am excited to see that this book continues in a series.
And I cannot leave out: I LOVE when chapters have titles. Mandi Oyster uses them for every chapter and they really added to the whole book. It makes me think of Twilight, which is one of my favorite books with chapter titles!
Oyster a strong writer and I am honored to have received an ARC
An author that evokes emotion - it's a love hate struggle with many of the characters and the protective feelings you have for the person who gets all the knocks. Outstanding YA with an exciting story line and powerful messages to keep pushing forward...
Some books start out slow or take a while to build up the plot and characters before the story can really start. Instead, this book places us right in the middle of the story and you learn things along with the characters. Because of this, the book captured my focus by the very beginning, and I was instantly invested.
The characters were so well done, both protagonists and antagonists, and the way the magic worked was really cool and developed. The story was super unique too. I didn’t know much of what to expect going into this one and I was pleasantly surprised.
I really enjoyed Dacia and Cody’s deep friendship. I wasn’t expecting it to turn into a romantic relationship so early on in the series, but it was a lot of fun to see it happen.
There are still so many books left in the series, and I have no idea where it could go from here, so I’m nervous yet really excited to continue with it!
First, I'd like to thank the author for sending me this book! Fantasy is one of my favourite kinds of books and I enjoyed reading Dacia's story. The characters were really interesting, and I liked how they evolved during the story and especially Dacia's progress with her powers throughout the novel. The love story was also good. On the other hand, I was sometimes confused when there were ellipses and I think that the first few chapters were a bit short, but in general, it was fine. In my opinion, this book is more aimed at teenagers than young adults, but I still had a great time reading it. I still don't know if I'll read the next book, but overall it was great.
I just have four words: The chapters have titles!!
It has been so long since I've seen a book that title's each chapter so I just found this detail really cute. Aside from that though, the writing of this book was absolutely phenomenal. The imagery was so incredibly vivid that it felt like I was watching a movie instead of reading a book! I loved that the hero wasn't perfect, because it made her feel more relatable and real. There was never a dull moment and the ending left off on a perfectly satisfying cliffhanger.
I'm super excited to check out the rest of the books in this series and am incredibly thankful to Mandi Oyster for gifting me a copy <3
I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
***
This was a delightful and fast-paced magical romp. Dacia has a whole treasure trove of magical powers she's never understood and when she heads off to college she's met with bullying, prophecy, and a big bad.
I enjoyed her journey of self-discovery and detested her bullies. The book drags you in and can easily be read in just a few hours.
Be warned, you will not find resolution. So, if you need an ending, you may want to grab #2 as well.
I received this copy as an ARC review and will be reviewing with my own personal opinions.
The beginning started out strong but than I felt like in some parts it was rushed and cut to the chase. The story is about 18 year old Dacia who starts college along side her guy best friend Cody where she learns about a prophecy and has to learn how to control her powers.
I felt like while reading the book it was written in a style that was more inclined to younger readers.
In the story, the characters are 18 and starting college. I feel like the dialogue was short and it cut to chase rather quickly. The scene where Cody asks Dacia to be his girlfriend felt immature as it felt like they were 13/14 not 18 . It just seemed very young. You also have bullies which Cassandra and her crew gave me middle school mean girl vibes.
With that being said, I see lots of potential with the series and would love to read more of the growth of the characters and where their journey takes them.
From the very start of the story, I was hooked and couldn't put the book down once I had started. It's magical and mesmerising in every sense. The main character- Dacia is so likeable and despite her incredible power- she is a humble, teenage girl, with the self-esteem issues that come with this age, seeking acceptance from her family and friends too. Her friend Cody , provides the strength, comfort and support that she needs- and there is no surprise that this friendship turns to romance too. The romantic relationship they have does not dominate the story and portrayed in a beautiful and youthful way too - which is refreshing to read. Although, magic powers, demons and battles with the evil Nefarious, bring excitement and fantasy, I really like the contrast between the more realistic-'friends, college, boyfriend scenarios' too. This will appeal to all YA readers The story is action packed , written well and fast paced- hence the reason that I couldn't put it down. There are themes around Dacia's past, her anxieties and emotions that are weaved within the writing well - but if developed more would have given the story a different feel. A fantastic story - looking forward to reading the rest of this series and will be passing on to my teenage daughters to enjoy. I can see this as a great film too. A recommended read for anyone who enjoys some magic and excitement in their lives.

Dacia Wolf wants NOTHING more than to be a normal girl. Alas! Her life is anything but normal. Fostering a set of powers since her childhood, she's been seen as a freak her entire life! She has one best friend - Cody who has been her rock for as long as she can remember. When she enters college, she wants to have a chance at a normal life, but will that be possible? Well, no. Why? Because Dacia is a part of a prophecy and she is destined to save the world.
Reading this wonderful Fantasy novel has been a refreshing change for me. I decided to read this book because I am a total sucker for any story that even remotely related to prophecies. Honest to God, I am so glad I got to read this book! If I could, I would give this book 10 out of 5 stars.
The cover of the book is vibrant and beautiful. The title is simple and self explanatory. I loved the way the novel was penned down. The author has managed to bring all her words to life. Despite knowing that this is a Fantasy book, I couldn't help but wonder what if this was real life?
The book seems to have a lull and from the very beginning, I was completely into the story. The plot was beautiful and the story line was insanely addictive! Everything had a perfect flow and nowhere did I feel that the book was lagging or stretching.
The characters were beautifully penned and well crafted. They seemed real. I loved the characters of Cody and Samantha. Dacia was a bit exasperating with her constant need to become the "selfless hero," but then again, it was important to depict her that way.
One of the many plus points in the novel was that during the early chapters, the author has given the pronunciation of the main character's name. This is something I really appreciate.
Other than that, the climax of the book leaves the reader craving for more. If I am being really honest, I can't get enough of Dacia and her companions and that is the reason why I dug my metaphorical tentacles into the second book as soon as I finished the first one.
I would recommend this book for EVERYONE. Period.
Ps. I may be going out on a limb here, but I really want this book to become a movie!
I've been a big fan of YA fantasy and adventure books for a while, especially since I am a Middle School teacher. This is a very strong start to a potentially fantastic series and definitely have added the next installment to my TBR list! I think this would be a great book for the YA audience to read.
The first bright spot is the great characters (where all good stories should start!). Dacia is very relatable (even to an adult reader), despite her incredible abilities within the book. I really enjoyed the contrast of her incredible powers with her, at times, crushing self-esteem. She has never been accepted by people--especially her parents. Thus, connecting with Dacia was easy. Cody is also a refreshing character and provides a strong balance. Sarah and Samantha, though at times cliche and flat, fill out the needed roles in this first book. Would like to see them grow and change with the story as well as it continues.
Second, the story is very manageable and grounded in a sense of reality which I really like. The fictitious college (you know, I assume it's fictitious, I did not fact-check this!) once again contrasts well with the fantasy and adventure.
I think older YA readers will connect well with these characters and stories (11+ in my opinion). There is a touch of violence and gore in Dacia's dealings with Nefarious, but comparing other YA novels such as Harry Potter or Hunger Games it is no different.
My critique is the pacing and potential themes that get lost in the pacing. There are a few moments in the novel that don't fully capture the potential for character development, and I think it missed a strong opportunity to explore some themes of bullying and depression. In these slower-paced sections, it feels like you re-live similar experiences that don't fully allow Dacia to learn and grow from them. Perhaps they are even a bit repetitive.
Overall, 4.5/5. A very strong start to a potentially fantastic series. I hope to see more character development moving forward and some tension between existing relationships. Book 2 is on my TBR list for sure!
A beautifully written story that will leave you on the edge of your seat from the very beginning.
I haven’t really delved into fantasy before, deciding with no reason to think so, that it was not for me. Mandi has completely changed my view on the genre and in doing so has opened me up to an entirely new genre of books I hadn’t even considered giving the time of day. So not only have I fallen in love with this book (and I will definitely be buying the rest in the series) but I have learnt not to be so closed minded when it comes to other genres I’m unfamiliar with. So really I have a lot to thank Mandi for.
The themes Mandi explored in ‘Dacia Wolf and the Prophecy’ are also important. It isn’t just a story about magic (which was fantastic in itself) but it teaches you something. It teaches you about fear. How unhealthy it is to hold onto, and how important it is to let go of and to transform it into something else. Hope. Perseverance. Commitment. Dedication. Self belief. The characters are believable and constructed in great detail. The relationships also feel realistic and if they hadn’t been so beautifully written, the story may not have been as enjoyable to read as it was. I cared about the characters a great deal. I saw them as I read along. I was with them when they were in danger. I felt the same emotions they were feeling.
My bank account was hoping I wouldn’t enjoy the book. I already have an ever growing “books to buy list” and I don’t even have enough space for the ones I have now...but after finishing this book, I will HAVE to buy them. There is no doubt about it. I cannot wait to read the next installment in the series, and I am thankful that Mandi expanded my horizons by my reading this one.
I'll start by saying Urban Fantasy isn't my favorite cup of tea. I prefer high fantasy worlds with complex structures, sweeping panoramic views, ancient lore, etc. When I escape into a book, I want to run as far from our mundane world as possible. I don't think I've enjoyed an academy-centric Urban Fantasy title since Harry Potter (if that can even be classed the same way).
That said, I was startled to find myself pulled into Dacia Wolf and the Prophecy. It contains a lot of the Urban tropes I grow impatient reading about over and over again (i.e. a red-headed main character with an inferiority complex, the chosen one with perhaps too much inborn power, best-friends-to-lovers, and detestable bullies akin to Draco Malfoy in female form), yet I was drawn in, and ended up reading the book in two sittings. Why? Because Mandi Oyster is a masterful storyteller. Her prose leaps off the pages; her characters are believable and likeable despite the tropes of the genre; and while the story is centered around a school, it's just a backdrop to pretty interesting magical conflicts and lore.
There are some flaws, yes. The pacing (while very often good), takes a dip around 200 pages in, and Dacia's blackouts get a little tedious - although they make sense under the circumstances. The climax felt a tad vague, but after looking back over it, it made more sense. The dialogue of the demon Nefarious is a bit cringe-worthy in its predictability. I have questions, a lot of questions, and hopefully the following books in the series will answer those. The thing is, for the first time since Rowling, I actually want to read another book in an Urban Fantasy series. That's the best part. Oyster's skill at hooking her readers is top-notch. Bravo!
Thank you Mandi for recommending this book on IG!!
I absolutely LOVE Fantasy, suspense, prophecy driven stories and of course some romance. This book will give you all and so much more!
Dacia goes to college only to find herself as the center of a prophecy foretelling how she is the chosen one meant to save the world from a horrid beast named Nefarious. Of course, anyone who finds this out when they are first in college would react the same way, IN FEAR!
Dacia has always been scared of her powers that she has, she doesn't look at them as gifts. She never really has learned to use them and has kept her mouth sealed about her secret from the world except from her best friend Cody. Cody will protect her from all the others that would like to call her a freak or any other mean names. Despite knowing about Dacia's powers Cody is always there to try and protect and stand with Dacia. This is such a great friendship that really had me from the start. I think everyone should strive to have a friend like this. Definitely hits you in the feels!
Dacia learns to accept her powers and use them. She starts to grow and learns that there is faith over fear. This is such a great and powerful message to be spreading, especially in a YA book. I think everyone around Dacia's age and maybe even younger needs to know that no matter how scary or fearful you are that you have to stand up and do what is right.
This book definitely had me on the edge of my seat at moments, I couldn't put the book down. I will continue this series!
If you like fantasy, suspense, urban fantasy, contemporary settings and a hint of romance this book is a MUST.
Dacia Wolf and the Prophecy is one of those books that you need to have the next book handy so you can continue the journey. I loved it.
4.5/5 stars
Dacia is extremely powerful to the point where she burned her house down at 6 years old. Her parents lost trust in her, and she’s off to college. Things tend to happen around Dacia and she’s nervous that people are going to find out. Alongside her best friend Cody, new roommate Samantha, and the Dean of the school Sarah, she must figure out the prophecy of her defeating the beast Nefarious.
Dacia, Samantha, Cody and Sarah are an absolutely dynamic quad of friends. Samantha and Cody being the biggest mvps of this book, because I can’t imagine helping anyone through everything that Dacia is forced to go through.
This book low key had a horror aspect to it. I loved that, I lived for that, I was on edge the entire book. The romance is very subtle and it doesn’t take over the plot. The main villain is quite well done, quite terrifying.
Oh and let’s not mention the petty drama and attempts at bullying in this book. I could definitely see it happening in the real world.
The ending was something I did not see coming, and the very ending was a great lead into the next book, which I very much so want to pick up as I loved Dacias journey!
So first off let me say two things. I am not a fantasy fiction reader or should I say I wasn’t a fantasy fiction reader. Secondly, I am not a series reader or should I say I wasn’t a series reader. Now on to the review. Oh my goodness!!! I loved this story. I have been very busy and not able to read like I have wanted but every time I picked up this book I could not put it down. The characters, the storyline, the excitement, the mystery of wanting to know what is going to happen next. Everything flowed so smoothly. I kept wanting more. I became Dacia. I was pulled into her character. Dacia goes to college and finds out that she is the chosen one to fight against a horrid beast named Nefarious. Her closest friend Cody has known for a long time about Dacia’s gifts. Together with some new friends, Dacia will learn to use her gifts with control so she can fight Nefarious. But her doubts may get the best of her. Can she push fear aside and step into her calling? What a wonderful message this book gives. Faith over fear! Guess I will be reading more of Mandi Oyster’s series on Dacia Wolf. Thank you Mandi Oyster for allowing me the privilege of reading and doing a review.
Dacia Wolf and The Prophecy is about a young woman named Dacia who has many magical abilities. She discovers that she is destined to defeat a giant demon who returns to earth every 1,000 years or so, she has to learn to rely on her friends and, more importantly, believe in herself in order to survive.
The characters were all super enjoyable, and there was a lot of twists and action to keep the story going. I found her love interest a tad too perfect for me but their developing relationship was enjoyable to watch.
The writing could have used a bit more variety. But the story-line and the characters are all intriguing. And the writing is easy to read making this a quick read. If you are into cute love stories and protagonists who must find the courage to face overwhelming odds, then check out Dacia Wolf and The Prophecy.
“I received a copy via the author and I’m giving an honest review.” Dacia Wolf wants NOTHING more than to be a normal girl. Alas! Her life is anything but normal. Fostering a set of powers since her childhood, she’s been seen as a freak her entire life! She has one best friend – Cody who has been her rock for as long as she can remember. When she enters college, she wants to have a chance at a normal life, but will that be possible? Well, no. Why? Because Dacia is a part of a prophecy and she is destined to save the world. I am in love with this book!!!! the storyline is just*chefs kisses* and the characters are amazing. I will definitely go to amazon and pick up the rest.
First let me say, the story of a young girl with powers isn't new, but as with all books, it is the story and characters that make it. The author nails it. I like Dacia, our protagonist, but really like Cody, you'll see.
The first person style writing is a tricky thing. If the author doesn't really get us inside the MCs head, or makes cliche thoughts that doesn't work, the book won't work. The Author does a good job of that. It doesn't feel forced at all, and the realistic take instead of the over the top whimsical was something I appreciated. A great story with a good female lead. Definitely worth a read.
Wow. This book was amazing. It was like a movie. I loved everything single word and all of the twists and turns. I loved it so much, I have already stuck my nose into book 2. I am for sure getting the rest of the series as well because this is a must read. Dacia's story of finding herself and defeating a greater evil will never be forgotten. I loved her relation with Cody and Sara. I felt for all of the characters and was turning the page to know what happened. When the book ended, I had to know more. This is a must read.
I really enjoyed reading Dacia's first adventure. I loved seeing how her confidence grew throughout the book, but I also really appreciated how realistically she reacted to the terrifying situation she was facing. The supporting cast of her friends and mentor really added to the story. The mix between dreams and reality added to the intensity of the villain. I look forward to reading more in the Dacia series.
This story has the classic structure of the Hero's Journey, and it's entertaining within the tropes in the genre. I do feel it's more aimed at pre-teens over Young Adults. Even though the villain failed to give me the sense of imminent damnation, and the annoying classmates made me feel a little murderous (well done, that!), I enjoyed Dacia's personality and her journey of self-discovery.
