I was so wrapped up in haruki and akihiko relationship I forgot we have our precious boys sato and uenoyama as well. The volume explored all the relationships beautifully. It's just getting more meaningful and beautiful with every passing page.

All I want to say here is Hiiragi is an actual cutie pie. I wanna see him more and see how his character develops. The interactions thus far are hilarious.

Fucking ouch, man. This series causes me so much pain. I just want to wrap Ritsuka and Mafuyu up and protect them. Precious boys.
I can't wait for these chapters to get animated. I want to hear Yuki and Hiiragi's music so god damn bad. I also can't wait to read this when it comes out physically in the US. There's just something about being able to hold a physical copy that fills my heart up.

First time reading the physical version and oof. These chapters still give me chills. I absolutely adore Hiiragi and Shizu. I'm obsessed with Shizu's intensity and possessiveness and the fact that this is just two idiots completely in love with each other, but thinking the other doesn't love them back.
These chapters have such a weight to them. The heaviness everyone feels bringing up Yuki and his music, Mafuyu's fear, Shizu's whole entire vibe, it's so short compared to the others, but it packs a punch.
I'm so nervous about Hiiragi and Yuki's music. I want it so fucking bad, but I don't want to be disappointed. Especially because they're supposed to be completely different from Mafuyu. Like their sound is so hyped up. I want it to be done justice. The music for Given has been really good though so I have high hopes. When Yuki's song gets written... It's over for me. I'm sure it'll kill me.

The way I still haven't fully seen the movie. I'm scared okay!! And I always want to reread before I watch and I've just been putting it off, but I get to see it in theaters tomorrow!! And I've already listened to the music so many times. I love it of course. I'm so obsessed with Given.
I love that this started with Yayoi not understanding Ue and Mafuyu's relationship or gay relationships in general, but wanting to because she didn't want to hurt her little brother and then it ended with her helping Ue "restore" Yuki's song.

This volume begins Hiragi and Shizu's story. I was ambivalent about Hiragi before I read this, but I've come to like him quite a bit. He's like a more playful and carefree version of Uenoyama. Shizu, on the other hand, kind of freaks me out. He's feelings for Hiragi are just so intense, and I'm worried about how they'll manifest in the future.
Our boys from Given seem to be on different pages these days, not spending as much time together as they used to. Uenoyama spends more time practicing with Hiragi and Shizu than with his own group and with Akihiko's attention streched in two directions and Mafuyu unable to decide if he wants to move forward with music I worry about their future.
And speaking of Mafuyu, what is going on with him and Uenoyama? I mean, I know they're still together but they don't spend any time with each other and their communication is shit. Why doesn't Mafuyu feel comfortable talking to him about his past or his feelings about music? Their relationship seems to have stalled at a surface level, which is sad because I was rooting for them so much.
And concerning this song that Yuki started and Uenoyama finished... I am completely missing something there. I know that finishing it put Uenoyama in a bad mood but I don't know why. Was it because of how good it was or because of the lyrics? Was it a love song to Mafuyu? And why was Hiragi so insistent that they finish it? Without the actual song or lyrics, the whole thing goes over my head. And since Uenoyama and Mafuyu apparently no longer talk anymore, I can't even get any context from them.
Overall, this volume was just frustrating. I didn't enjoy it as much as the previous volumes, but maybe it's because I was already familiar with those stories, and this one is new. Actually, no. That's not true. I'm frustrated with Uenoyama and Mafuyu. And I'm also frustrated that Uenoyama is spending more time with a band that isn't his own. 3.5 stars, rounded up

In an entirely unpredicted switch of POV, Shizu is now my favorite character.
Least favorite currently is Ueno's sister, who before was just oblivious but now seems like one of those people who make other people's problems about themself and how the issue impacts their feelings. But maybe I'm reading that wrong.
Gosh teens have a lot of drama! I'm glad I spent so much time reading and having a job. This is exhausting.

Este tomo no es más que una recopilación de relatos acerca de personajes secundarios. Se me ha hecho un poco raro. Creo que es el tomo que menos me ha gustado. Pero bueno, ya estoy al día con el manga. Espero que poco a poco siga el autor con la historia principal. Tengo muchas ganas de saber que pasará.

Estoy preocupado con el rumbo que esta tomando la historia, SI, seguire leyendola obvio en cuanto consiga el siguiente volumen, Que el volumen se centrara tanto en los amigos de mafayu me sorprendio y aunque fue interesante conocer mas de ellos,me quede con ganas de mas de mis Given boys.

Estos paneles me parecieron tan tiernos, porque se nota como Hiiragi siempre buscaba apoyo, cualquier tipo de apoyo, en Shizusumi pero nunca se permitió a él mismo o a Shizu saber sus sentimientos y es algo desgarrador que no se hayan permitido un poco de felicidad o libertad hasta que Yuki falleció y Hiiragi se motivó de nuevo a retomar la banda con Shizu.
Me muero, Hiiragi es un bebé porque en ese momento él estaba llorando por no haberse puesto en contacto con Mafuyu, porque realmente lo ama como su hermano menor y no le gusta sentir que se aparta de él

La portada de este capítulo es hermoso sí, pero aun creo que Aki no se merece a Haruki :( quiero saber más de ellos, aunque sea un poquito, los extraño

La portada de este capítulo es hermoso sí, pero aun creo que Aki no se merece a Haruki :( quiero saber más de ellos, aunque sea un poquito, los extraño

Given didn't win a place in the music festival, but they have received an offer to record an album. Mafuyu, however, isn't sure he wants to be a part of that, much to Uenoyama's confusion and frustration. Simultaneously, we spend some time with band that did win, and its two remaining members, Hiragi and Shizusumi, Mafuyu's old friends. Uenoyama is engaged as temporary guitar player with this band, and tensions between him and Hiragi, neither of whom likes the other, make for an interesting band dynamic.
I promised a comprehensive review of the entire series as soon as I finished all available volumes, and even though Volume 7 is out in Japanese (and I assume it will at some point be translated to English), I'm still going to write my thoughts on the story and execution so far, given that I don't currently have access to anything beyond this volume.
A few thoughts on this volume first, though.
Most of all, Volume 6 feels more like a kind of afterthought, or a collection of short snippets, than a comprehensive story. I've rated it down because it lacks focus.
We follow Hiragi more than anyone else, and perhaps part of my impatience with this volume is that I don't really care about him. I want to follow the continued relationships of the Given band members, and although there is a tiiiny bit of Uenoyama and Mafuyu, mostly this volume sets up a new relationship, between Hiragi and Shizusumi.
And, I mean, I'm all for the concept "everthing is gay and nothing hurts", but come on, everyone can't literally be gay.
This does seem to be typical for the BL genre, but given that "Given" (no pun intended) has, so far, managed to avoid some of the most annoying BL tropes, I was hoping that it would avoid this one too. No such luck.
Anyway, on to my review of the series as a whole. And in the unlikely event that you're reading this review of Vol. 6 without having read any of the previous volumes, be warned that there will be spoilers here.
Plot
The plot is relatively slow-moving, something I appreciate. The characters are allowed time to develop, and get to know one another. Mafuyu's back story is gradually unraveled, but, even at this stage, never fully revealed, so that you still get snippets from his past here and there that help to explain some of his issues.
The music bits develop pretty realistically, perhaps apart from the band's allowing Mafuyu to perform on guitar when he is such a beginner (and kills it on vocals anyway). Also, in terms of artwork here, I have one criticism, and it's coming from me as a singer: stretching the neck dramatically upwards might look visually pleasing in a manga panel, but it will also effectively choke off your airways and strangle your voice. SO PLEASE STOP DRAWING MAFUYU SINGING LIKE THIS:

The story raises some interesting, and weighty, themes, like loss and pain, self expression and self worth, believing in oneself, and the difficulties of connecting completely with another person. This lends the manga a more serious tone and helps elevate it from a silly love story to something more.
One of the drawbacks, plot-wise, is that certain developments happen rather suddenly. Even though events leading up to these developments have created a decent build-up, there are occasionally confusing transitions that can make these moments feel rushed, and even forced.
One of my other criticisms concerns the portrayal of the main relationships, when they finally happen. It feels like they all just shake hands and decide to date, and then nothing more physical happens. And let me first specify that I am very glad "Given" has (at least so far) avoided the often exploitative, unnecessarily graphic way many other BL manga choose to portray their relationships. Still, when, for instance, Haruki and Akihiko finally get together after five volumes of sheer pining, they don't even kiss?
Come on.
Characters
The four members of Given are all given very different personalities, and styles, and I like them all very much. Their diversity makes them that much more interesting, and it's clear that Kizu has done a lot of character work on them.
As far as the supporting characters go, I do feel like they bleed into each other more, and I don't really care that much about them. However, this only becomes truly problematic in Vol. 6 (as mentioned above) because we are suddenly expected to care about a character we've only gotten to know in the most superficial way before this.
Artwork
The artwork, although it doesn't particularly stand out in the crowd of manga art, is generally visually pleasing and shows an attention to detail that heightens the quality of the manga.
My favourite aspect of Kizu's style is how expressive she makes her characters. She also manages to combine the serious and the comedic well.
However, there are some issues, as I've mentioned before.
First of all, most of the supporting characters bleed into each other, or look so much like some of the main characters that, at least initially, you can get confused over which character is actually being featured.
Hiragi, for instance, looks a lot like Mafuyu, only with a slightly different hair colour and pointy teeth. Mafuyu's old boyfriend Yuki looks like anyone and everyone. Ugetso actually also looks a lot like Mafuyu, only with dark hair. Shizusumi is basically Akihiko with black hair and no piercings. Uenoyama's friends are so bland that I don't have any idea which is which, even now.
Another issue is that Kizu places the speech bubbles in such a way that it is frequently difficult to know which character is speaking. In some cases I actually had to go back and reread several pages to try to figure out which character was saying what. This can get a little frustrating.

Putting all currently available volumes together, I think I'd give this series 3 stars. It's pretty middle-of-the-line, but it has been enjoyable to read, and I will read Vol. 7 if and when it becomes available in English.

Eighth volume of manga I've read for the "30 in 30 Manga Challenge" in November 2022.
Quick review for a quick read. This is definitely shaping up to be one of my favorite series. So, this volume shifts focus back to Uenoyama as he's (temporarily at least) playing in the band of his former rival, Hiragi. It's no secret that Uenoyama is slightly jealous of Hiragi, considering their band was awarded the honor of playing in the festival and their former lead singer was Mafuyu's old friend. Things take a turn for the unexpected for two reasons, as Uenoyama not only learns of a great opportunity for Given that comes up but also is tasked with a unique musical goal posed by Hiragi that might be a little difficult to manage. There are a lot of beats of emotional resonance in this volume, all done extremely well provided the relationship between the characters in both bands. I really liked being able to get to know Hiragi and Shizusumi in this volume, as it gives more context on what they're going through in the aftermath of such tragic events and having to pick up the pieces from there.
Mafuyu's conflicted emotions are understandable in this volume as well, considering he doesn't know how to move forward with either his relationship with Uenoyama or for Given's huge opportunity. There are plenty of moments like this that stayed with me for the characterization, but there are also many moments where I had a big grin on my face with how the characters made me laugh.
Yeah, I'm loving this so far. I hate that I have to wait until January for the next volume, but I'm definitely excited to continue it.
Overall score: 4/5 stars.

Given siempre tendrá un lugar muy importante y especial en mi corazón.
En este volumen, vemos cómo se acentúan más los problemas de pareja de Mafuyu y Uenoyama a causa de la falta de comunicación, y cómo los propios amigos de Mafuyu influyen en estos problemas sin querer, además de que profundizamos en la relación de Shizusumi y Hiiragi.
Otra cosa muy importante del tomo son los extras, tenemos una presentación formal entre Yayoi y Haruki, nos enteramos de que Akihiko ya estaba enamorado de Haruki desde el concierto que dieron en verano (aunque estaba en negación por todo el drama de Ugetsu, y también porque no muchas personas creen que puedas querer a dos personas a la vez, cuando sí que se puede) y vemos algunos aspectos más entretenidos de las relaciones amistosas de Uenoyama y Mafuyu.
A pesar de que este volumen es el sexto, se siente como una transición, entre el cierre del arco anterior y entre el planteamiento de las problemáticas que vendrán en los siguientes arcos del manga.
En este volumen, vemos cómo se acentúan más los problemas de pareja de Mafuyu y Uenoyama a causa de la falta de comunicación, y cómo los propios amigos de Mafuyu influyen en estos problemas sin querer, además de que profundizamos en la relación de Shizusumi y Hiiragi.
Otra cosa muy importante del tomo son los extras, tenemos una presentación formal entre Yayoi y Haruki, nos enteramos de que Akihiko ya estaba enamorado de Haruki desde el concierto que dieron en verano (aunque estaba en negación por todo el drama de Ugetsu, y también porque no muchas personas creen que puedas querer a dos personas a la vez, cuando sí que se puede) y vemos algunos aspectos más entretenidos de las relaciones amistosas de Uenoyama y Mafuyu.

Kapela mimo tego nie poddaje się, a chłopaki dostają od przedstawiciela znanej wytwórni muzycznej szansę na profesjonalny debiut.
Równocześnie dawny przyjaciel Sato zaprasza Ritsuke do swojej kapeli.
Gitarzysta przyjmuje propozycję, nie wiedząc jeszcze, że Hiiragi potrzebuję jego pomocy przy napisaniu ważnej piosenki, której nie umiał dokończyć w przeszłości.
Jaki mógł być tego powód?
Muzyka to jedna z dziedzin sztuk pięknych, która w pewien sposób
wpływa na nasze życie.
Dostarcza nam masę wrażeń, ale również odciąga naszą uwagę
od chwilowych kłopotów.
W serii „Given” muzyka jest niekiedy pomocnym kluczem do
rozwiązania problemów postaci.
Daje im siłę oraz wiarę w lepsze jutro.
Nakłania bohaterów do refleksji.
W szóstym tomie poznajemy bliżej przyjaciół z dzieciństwa Sato.
Odkrywamy też małymi krokami przeszłość zespołu, do którego uczęszczał rudowłosy wokalista.
Oprócz tego nareszcie doczekałam się momentu, w którym autorka poświęciła
większą uwagę Yayoi.
Bardzo się cieszę, że mogłam ją bliżej poznać, chociaż nadal szkoda, że w historii Natsuki Kizu brakuje postaci żeńskich.
Fajnie byłoby, gdyby do serii jeszcze została wprowadzona
jakaś dziewczyna ^^
Bardzo podobała mi się rywalizacja pomiędzy Uenoyamą, a Kashimą.
Ich kłótnie nieraz rozbawiły mnie do łez.
Drugoplanowi bohaterowie zostali tu zepchnięci na bok.
Akihiko Kaji oraz Haruki Nakayama czekają zza kulisami, by w kolejnej części ponownie wejść na scenę – przynajmniej mam taką nadzieję, bo uwielbiam ich duet.
Jeśli dopiero zaczynacie swoją przygodę z gatunkiem boys love, to seria „Given” jest idealnym wyborem na dobry początek ♡♡♡

Me ha parecido muy guay que el plot haya cambiado tanto y que se muestre el romance que se esconde entre Hiiragi y Shizusumi!! Espero que ellos dos acaben juntos 😺.
Me ha parecido, además, un poco doloroso el punto de vista de Mafuyu. Me parece bastante lógico que teniendo el trauma de lo que pasó con Yuki, sienta ese abandono, y que esté asustado por ello. Sinceramente casi lloro😭.
Por otro lado, he AMADO ver tantos celos (no tóxicos, por si acaso). LITERALMENTE UENOYAMA CON LA VENA HINCHADA CADA DOS POR TRES CON HIIRAGI-. Y Shizusumi celoso de Yuki😭🙏.
Honestamente tengo ganas de ver que pasa con los personajes. Dejé de leer Given por un tiempo y me alegra haberlo retomado. Aunque es verdad que de este volúmen no tengo mucho a comentar. Y me da un poco la sensación que la relación entre Mafuyu y Uenoyama está un poco en stand by.
Aún así, iré leyendo los demás volúmenes, a ver que tal!!

I love how this series does not fall into the repetitive pitfall that many popular long-running mangas tend to do. GIVEN is a story about a band and each volume is devoted to the progressive direction in which the four promising band members are heading…the professional ups and downs, their personal demons, the uncertainties, their equations with each other and also with other members of the musical fraternity.
In this volume, we learn more about Mafuyu’s childhood friends and now proficient musicians themselves, Haruki and Shizu. Haruki and Uenoyama are natural rivals and yet, as the latter takes on a side gig of playing in Haruki’s band…their interactions are hilarious and oddly respectful towards each other. On a side note, Shizu is officially one of my new favourite characters.

A whole lot of nothing happened, but stuff also happened. If that makes sense. Stuff that I liked happened. And stuff was setup for the next book happened. Which was stuff I also liked.
This honestly was a filler volume with only small blips of plot, but the filler wasn't an offensive waste of time and helps set up drama for the next book which i'm a fan of.
Wish it felt like the main couple actually felt like a couple though. Like if I started this series right here, I could not tell that Mafuyu and Uenoyama were dating. Pleaseeeeeeee.
