From Lacee Hightower comes a new serial killer dark romance novel!
My God, my forgiving God, why have you deserted this man who is so loving, so caring, and so generous? Why have you abandoned, betrayed, destroyed, and left him broken, bitter, and riddled with guilt? Grant mercy to this beautiful, tormented soul. Release him from this resentment and vengeance. Free his heart to love again. Forgive his sins of blood and lead him from the pathway of the forsaken.
This connection between us was instant, eerily so. He set my body on fire, devoured me with his dark pleasures, and led me into a chilling territory of evil wrongdoings and burning passion. He had the power to seduce me, control me, and chew up my heart and spit it right back out at my feet without an ounce of remorse.
I should have loathed Derek Kinnard and his vile, unforgivable, forbidden acts. Thoughts of any future with this vengeful man were preposterous, unethical, and against everything I’d ever believed in. When he claimed that we were nothing more than an insurmountable disaster, I should have run and never looked back. But I couldn’t stay away. He was my addiction. He triggered parts of me that I’d kept locked and hidden, and taught me a whole new side to passion, love, and life. When the two of us were together, we were driven by our need and my heart didn’t seem to care about what he’d done in the past.
True love is taking the good with the bad, the darkness with the light, the dirty with the untainted, and never forsaking those who mean the most. The more Derek Kinnard tells me to walk away, the more I seem to persevere.
Some risks are worth taking, and some secrets simply worth keeping hidden…
Fast-paced, entertaining and steamy! Derek has it all but he also has a dark side, he is a serial killer wanting to rid the world of drug dealers and especially the one who he blames for his twin brother’s death. He meets Kinley and sparks fly but what will happen when she discovers his darkness? Dark read with great characters and intense chemistry. Loads of drama and suspense that draws you in from beginning to end. I loved it!
First off I will say this author is completely new to me and boy am I glad I found her!! This book was pretty damn good.
I love a good suspense. I love a good darkish romance. I love a good alpha male. But what I love the best is a bad ass female. Guess what?!!! This book has it all.
Derek is a man scorn, little did he know he would find his light in the darkness. I ate up their story. Especially how much they overcame.
This is a great weekend read. I got sick so I had to read in two parts but if I wasn’t I would have ate this up in one sitting!! Grab it and tell me what you think!!
**I received this book as a review copy and in return gave my honest review**
This is truly a love story. Not only between the couple but between brothers. It's a very emotion filled book and a difficult read because of that. The actual serial killer murders are not the entire focus, in fact that's a part of this story but not really the focus. The title describes a lot once you start reading this relationship between brothers. It deals with hard topics, drug abuse, sexual assault, family hardship and death and the endless pain that comes with the loss of a loved one. It's really a powerful book to read and very well written. I haven't read this authors work before but will again. It's amazing and has the ending that really is truly inspiring! Read this book💔💓😊!
Derek may have it all in money and status but when he lost his twin brother another side of him was unleashed, killing those he deems responsible and more. When Kinley comes into his life, sparks fly but is there something a miss with her? well written engaging action, desires, emotion, torture, steamy hot moments and i cant wait for more!
I always love a good serial killer romance and this one was so enjoyable to me. I just loved the characters and thekr romance, they were the best pair and it was so fun to read about them.
**I received an arc of this book and this is my honest opinion**
This was a really good book. This is not what I would call romantic by any means, but there is a raw honest look at darkness and how deeply we can be, and are, affected by those we love. While I personally don’t think low level drug dealers, or really any drug dealer is so horrible they deserve the treatment received in this book (Human traffickers on the other hand are very deserving of this kind of treatment) I do understand the point behind the obsession and actions.
My only real complaint about this book is that it falls into the societal assumption that a good woman, or the Right woman, can change a man. They can’t, they won’t, it’s not possible to change someone else.
This book is very well written and I do very much recommend it to anyone who enjoys dark stories.
5 ⭐️s= Perfect story, exciting, engrossing, well developed complex characters, solid plot with few to no holes, descriptive environments and place settings, great mystery elements, realistic dialogue, believable reactions and behaviors, loved this story so much I’d buy it.
4 ⭐️s= Great story, highly entertaining and enjoyable, exciting storyline, well developed characters and settings, a few discrepancies but nothing that can’t be overlooked. Believable actions and reactions, realistic dialogue, a book I would consider buying.
3 ⭐️s= Good but not great story, noticeable discrepancies, grammatical and or spelling errors, undeveloped characters or unbelievable behaviors but still readable. Nothing majorly wrong with the story, just not interesting enough for me to continue. Would not buy the book.
2 ⭐️s= Not offended by the story, but not interested enough to finish. Unbelievable characters, poor writing, many mistakes, big holes or discrepancies, many spelling or grammatical errors, characters not believable, unlikeable or TSTL.
1 ⭐️= Offensive, extremely poor writing, horrible characters, victimization, gaslighting, blatant abuse, unnecessary violence, child endangerment, or any other highly objectionable behaviors by Main characters. Would never buy this book, and do not recommend it to anyone.

I've been reading MM almost exclusively for a couple of years now because I got so sick of the female leads being pathetic, weepy, whining, so irritating I wanted to smack them. And don't get me started on the ones who think a short skirt and a low cut blouse will get them what they want. Good writing it ain't, and not worthy of my time and money. Not sure why I decided to try this one but it may have something to do with the fact that the follow-up, Butterfly Dreams, is Derek's brother's story and it's MM. Sooo, colour me surprised when Kinley turned out to be strong, independent, mouthy in the best way, and definitely a woman I would like to be friends with. I really enjoyed how she didn't let Derek disparage her at the beginning about her job, and how blunt she was. Derek's vendetta was unbelievable but obviously a plot device to make him dark and deadly. It worked well but most of the blood and guts was off page and just related, with very little actually on page, so the story was not as dark as I expected and, from the blurb, I genuinely thought that he had killed a lot more people than he had. The idea that Kinley could stop him on his mission and turn him around is also a bit of a stretch but it didn't spoil the story for me. The connection between them was palpable and the sex was red hot. The story grabbed and held my attention, and seeing Derek and Kinley a few years on in Damian's story, which I'm halfway through and loving, is a nice bonus.
Dark M/F romance - from fascination to obsession in record time Be very aware that this is indeed a dark and very descriptive story. I. Loved. It. There is spellbinding intrigue as well as steamy hot moments but the book also provokes sad or melancholic feelings. This is a well-written and fast-paced book which I recommend if you like your M/F romance with an edge. Derek Kinnard had an identical twin brother, Dalton who overdosed on drugs on their 18th birthday. Derek has found a way to deal with the grief and remorse of not helping him. He kills local drug dealers in a very painful and tortuous way trying to get to their supplier known only as “CD.” Kinley shares a “woo-woo” ability with Derek who can sometimes “feel” his twin with him, talking or touching him. Kinley is quite intuitive or clairvoyant. Always has been. Having recently purchased a lemon of a car, she returns to the dealership to complain and meets the new owner: Derek Kinnard. Sparks fly, but Kinley senses a darkness about him. When she discovers his truth, what will she do? There was so much beautiful angst in this story. There will be a twist that shocks and a happy-for-now ending. The meaning of the book title is touching. I truly can’t wait for the next book which I understand will be the typical M/M romance one expects from GRR. I volunteered to review an ARC of this book through Gay Romance Reviews.
Derek (H) has two very distinctive sides: his high profile, rich business side, and his hidden, dark, vengeful killer one. He wasn't born a killer, but rather the tragic death of his brother and his mother awoke a need in him to exact sadistic revenge on drug dealers, as he seeks out one particular drug supplier. Kinley (h) comes into his life and there's an instant attraction between the two. Derek finds himself battling his desire for and at the same time wanting to drive her away to protect her from his dark side. As the two get to know one another, things become very hot and intense as they explore their passion, even though they both are holding onto dark secrets that could tear them apart if they come to light. Kinley and Derek were both really amazing characters, and it was interesting to see how their relationship played out. I've seen some revenge driven stories where a character is so revenge focused that their catharsis doesn't seem believable, which isn't the case - Derek does change in a believable way. And, when CD's story comes to light, just wow. Really great dark romance.
Dead Butterflies is a dark, emotional read of two lost souls whom have suffered tragedies in their past. Derek was devastated the day he found his brother dead. It unleashed a dark side. Vowing to avenge his brother's death he is now a serial killer who rids drug dealers from earth in order to find one particular dealer. Kinley is a sweet, compassionate woman who was dealt a bad hand as a young teenager. She tries to stay positive. Working for two men who are ex DPS she has morals and values. When Kinley's past comes back to haunt her she lets him in. Now her life has been turned upside down leaving her questioning every ounce of her sanity and integrity. She knows it's wrong and perverse, and against every thing she's grown up believing. There is a strong, explosive chemistry between them. Now she must choose which path to take. This author is new to me and I can't wait to read more of her fabulous books. Thank you Booksirens and the author for a digital copy. Read and reviewed voluntarily and the opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
This is a dark, angsty and sexual book where Derek Kinnard is tortured by the loss of his twin Dalton due to drugs and decides to seek revenge on drug dealers while trying to locate the holy grail of a man called CD. Kinley has intuitive abilities which while help in one of her jobs causes havoc when she is around Derek who peruses her until she makes a discovery leading him to realise they are connected from the past. You worry where things will lead once Derek starts being torn between wanting Kinley for himself but also to hopefully lead him to CD, but you know no matter what he tries Kinley will push as much as he shoves as she is no weak women, she has a sharp tongue, takes no bull and does not like hand outs or pushy men. I can't wait for the next book to read about Derek's other brother Damian and what happens next for the characters of this book.

Not my cup of tea. I am not into bondage or pain. And there were flaws in the writing. Since when do scumbag drug dealers die before revealing who their dealer is? They don't have the kind of honor that the author implies. And why is the so-called big time dealer in such dire straits? We're halfway through the book before the reader knows that this is going to be about two characters in dominant/submissive roles.
I am also not into the kind of vigilante justice that Derek believes in and that Kinley, while not condoning, still accepts, because she LOVES the man. Even though she also hates him. I also don't like a heroine with values and inner strength who still falls so completely for a man that she can no longer function without him. Much is made of Kinley's psychic ability, but there is very little evidence of it in the book.
The sex scenes were mostly sexy and the characters were interesting.
This book really does take 'dream man with dark secrets' to a whole new level. Not quite an anti-hero, Derek Kinnard is superficially the same wealthy, HAF central male character as a lot of other books. However, what truly sets this book apart is just or broken he is from the untimely death of his twin brother and how his sole focus in life is truly dark. It takes a lot of skill from an author to create a serial killer character you empathise with, but Lacee has achieved this. Of course, meeting the love of his life does rather complicate his nocturnal habits and leaves him with some difficult decisions about loyalty and commitment. Derek Kinnard is an extremely well written character, for all his flaws, you still empathise with him. The contrite anguish he feels is very real, you are there with him.
This is book one in A Journey of The Forsaken series, and man am I ready for a second. This is about Derek Kinnard who has everything. Wealth, good looks, and a thriving business. He's also a ruthless serial killer that is determined to kill as many drug dealers as he can, and especially the one who he holds responsible for his twin brother's death. When he meets Kinley, there's an immediate attraction between them, but Derek also has a weird feeling that he knows her from somewhere. This is a great story with lots of action, down and dirty romance, some awesome torture scenes, and like all of Lacee's books, lots of focus on the character's backgrounds and feelings. Very well written with strong characters and storyline. Can't wait for the next book in this series.
Dead Butterflies is the first book I have read from this author - it won’t be the last. WOW! a truly riveting read that captivated me from the very first page. I loved this story and how Ms Hightower brings to life her characters. This is a serial killer, dark romance with some very graphic moments, but altogether a great read. Once I started reading it I couldn’t put it down. The characters both have troubled pasts, however, the chemistry between them is electric which leads to some pretty STEAMY scenes that will leave you panting.
It’s a well written novel, darkly delicious and well worth a read. Highly recommended!.

This was definitely a nice change of pace read for my smutty brain. Murder? Mystery? I am here for it.
Kinley and Derek briefly meet in high school (or at that age) and definitely don’t hit it off… kind of. The encounter is so small you barely think anything of it, until they cross paths years later when Kinley’s car takes a crap on her and she returns it to none other than Derek’s family dealership.
This gives me dexter feels, but also has its own general story line.
The quote at the end sums it all up nicely;
“Getting over a painful experience is much like crossing monkey bars. You have to let go at some point in order to move forward.” - C.S. Lewis
This book is full of emotions. There are tragic events that one should just not have to experience in life but unfortunately exist. These events have impacted these characters lives, scarred them on many levels but bring them together to finally heal. Derek and Kinley met when they were teenagers but it has been years when they cross paths again. Who knew a lemon of a car would give you the chance at love? This story is a wild ride of a read as these characters are challenged in finding each other's trust and in turn finding love. Enjoy!.

Interesting characters often have layers— nuances and contradictions that add up to an unusual whole, and that’s absolutely true of Derek, who is wealthy, successful, good looking, haunted, determined, and totally a serial killer. It’s a dark, twisty weave of personality, built on tragic experience, vigilantism, and did I mention darkness? It’s fascinating to watch his relationship with Kinely, another complicated-in-interesting-ways character, develop, and there’s plenty of chemistry, emotion, peril, and plot along the way. Overall, a really interesting read.

Are serial killers made or born? Dead Butterflies answers that question with a dark and twisted narrative that is not for the faint of heart. Expertly written, suspenseful and intriguing its characterizations are mesmerizing and riveting. With an original premise that pulls the reader in this tantalizing tale of the forsaken is an extraordinary accomplishment. This was my first time reading this author and though I can’t say I enjoyed where she took me as it was a little bit out of my reader comfort zone, I can appreciate a well told imaginative story when it comes my way.

An electrifying world of exotic/erotic dark mystery/romances. Lacee Hightower truly delivered on the implied promise. Dead Butterflie's presents an atmosphere full of passion and intense emotion filled with equally provocative characters that invite you into their personal lives to feel their pain, be a part of their struggles and insecurities, and share in their ultimate victories of their heart and soul. This book is nothing short of riveting. You won't be able to put it down, so be prepared to be up all night. I received an ARC and if you like dark romance, I highly recommend this book.
This is not a cookie-cutter romance, and that is a great thing for anyone looking for something fresh. There were plenty of secrets that were slowly revealed. The plot was sound and the characters were interesting with a bit of depth. Something about Lacee Hightower's words really pull in the reader and have them captivated with the world and characters. I can say that this is a book that will keep you on your toes and you will love it. It has everything, romance, mystery, and just everyday life!
On the outside, it seems Derek has it all, wealthy, handsome and successful. On the inside, the day lost his twin brother to drugs, changed him and now he tries to rid the world of the people he feels are responsible. Kinley is an honest, sweet girl. Though she lived through her own turmoil when she was younger, she strives to be a good person. When.they meet, their connection is instant and their attraction is electric. This is the first book I've ever read by this author and I look forward to reading many more! This was a really great story!
This is the story of Derek and Kinley. It is the first book in the Journey of the Forsaken series. First time that I am reading this author and it definitely won't be the last. There is an honesty and realness to the writing that grabs you and won't let go. The characters have great depth to them and the chemistry between them is off the charts. This is not a light read. Please read the trigger warnings. Definitely recommended.
I received this book as an Arc and I am voluntarily reviewing it.
If you want your couple to have an instant attraction that burns up every reservation and totally resets a person's moral compass, this is the story for you. Derek has become a serial killer of drug dealers in revenge for the death of his twin brother and he's on the hunt for the person at the head of the drug business. Kinley meets him and basically goes up in flames. She can't stay away and pushes aside everything else to be with him. There are surprises in store for the reader, but be prepared for the promised darkenss, the author pulls no puches.
Lacee Hightower has managed to impress me with her writing, imagery, compelling characters and ability to turn the darkness into something I craved. These two had such great chemistry & I enjoyed every second of it. It was really such a hard book to put down. The story is intense and brilliant in so many ways. The way Lacee Hightower writes her characters allows the reader to connect to them which makes reading that much more enjoyable as they go through ups and downs.
I absolutely love this book, I couldn’t believe how well written it was Lacee did such a good job, fast paced, steamy and entertaining it kept me hooked right from the first page. There was suspense and the relationship between Derek and Kinsley whoa was did It keep you on your toes! Derek was dark but there was a light to his darkness this author showed us this in many ways. I can’t wait to read more!

This is a brilliantly written book!! The darkness is totally understandable and how Derek is the man he is and why Kinley is so in love with him. I also like that the author did not make light of the situation and the struggles that the characters went through within themselves. This was a very unique perspective that had me falling for a serial killer!!!

Dead Butterflies was an interesting serial killer origin book. It was a quick and easy to follow book. I would have liked more backstory and development for Derek as well as Kinley. Some parts felt as though they would have benefited from more backstory rather than diving in. But overall an good read with a nice twist ending
A unique take on a serial killer novel. A riveting plot, which is fast paced and captivating from the first page. It's dark, gritty, with conflicted main characters and explosive chemistry leading to some very steamy scenes. A deliciously dark read.
