A dark mafia romance . . .

When Adella Valentino agrees to marry Leo Cifarelli, heir to the Cifarelli Syndicate, she gives up hope of ever experiencing a loving relationship. Leo is cunning, aloof and entirely lethal, and has treated her like a burden her whole life. But when the death of a rival forces the couple into hiding, Leo’s behaviour suddenly changes; he reveals a new side of himself – one that wants to claim her.

As they are trapped in each other’s presence, Leo’s beguiling grin and alluring darkness invite Adella deeper, daring her to submerge herself in the darkest corners of him and swim in a sea of sins with him. But Adella is hesitant. She worries that it might all be a game to Leo – one she is about to lose.

When she finally succumbs to temptation, one thing becomes crystal clear: Leo is a dangerous man who must never be underestimated.

Warning: This book contains sexually explicit scenes, a possessive anti-hero and profanity. It is intended for mature audiences. More content warnings can be found inside the book.

I am so grateful that I got the opportunity to read this before it comes so thank you Claire for the ARC.

Heart of Stone follows the beginning of the journey between Adella and Leo and completely different than any mafia romance I have ever read. When I have read mafia romances in the past, the boss has always been overbearingly possessive and acts like a caveman but Claire has always written her characters to be intelligent, conscious and calculating. Leo is exactly that, he is incredibly intelligent which you can see from the way he acts and speaks. The banter between Adella and Leo is amazing, the chemistry is there 100%. There's a moment in the book where he compliments her nails and I just knew he was in love with her.

If there is one thing you can always count on Claire for, it's a strong-willed, opinionated and intelligent female main character. Adella has no problem sharing her opinion (which is important) but what is equally important is the fact that Leo listens to her and respects her opinions.
*Pending power couple*
I could not put this book down - I read it in a day and the amount of notes I have on my kindle is ridiculous, the whole book was practically highlighted with any romantic interaction. If you've read Skin of the Night/Into the Night, then expect a completely different vibe.

THE SPICE AS WELL... CLAIRE JUST KILLS IT EVERY TIME. Made me blush! I think the build-up and the trust they form between them makes those scenes even more romantic (and hot), because we see them go from being indifferent to slowly falling for each other and I just loved seeing that.

The plot is very interesting and very well detailed and THE PLOT TWIST AT THE END.
No words. I was speechless.
It is so hard not to spoil anything because all I want to do is talk about this book and the twist!

I have said it once and i'll say it again - i don't want a man written by a woman, i want a man written by Claire. Simple.

I cannot wait for the next book <3

A fully armed mob boss couldn’t drag me away from this book

In the first novel from the Memento Mori series, Heart of Stone follows Leo and Adella across continents as they lay low from trouble. Bound together by a marriage of alliance between their mafia families, they begin to feel a shift in their future as a couple. I utterly adored this story and unlike Adella, I’m not about to take the piss with my sentiments.

Both Leo and Adella are just extremely likeable characters, and the nicest thing is that they genuinely have each other’s back. There is such a great trust and respect that builds between them that really has you routing for their happy future. And Alessio GODDAMN I can’t even begin to explain what it is about him, but he’s SUCH a good side character, my heart is full of endless love for him and you'll just have to read the whole book to know what I'm on about. I’ve actually managed to highlight so many parts of the book that anyone who has a look at it might think I’m auditioning for the live action remake and am trying to learn my lines.

But okay, cards on the table, Leo is a King worthy of all respect. He keeps his cards close to his chest but raises the stakes of every interaction. Adella follows suit with her character, but in my mind she’s the true Joker and I’m not bluffing. All bets are off for their future, but it’s guaranteed to be well played. Also, someone needs to call the United Nations together to schedule the next environmental summit, because I think the Earth got substantially hotter when Leo and Adella do eventually give in to the merciless ‘what if’. The only heart of stone I see is one made of diamonds.

The details were exquisite. Claire truly puts the ‘organised’ in ‘organised crime’ with this one, and in doing so the action feels extremely life-like. I ended up questioning myself like ‘oooo! Was that the warm breeze from the Adriatic Sea that I just felt?’; ‘ooooo!! Was that siren the police on their way to bust an underground mafia drug deal?’; ‘oooooo!!! Was that dark corner I just passed a black hole formed solely through the pure magnetism of Leo’s gaze?’… It’s safe to say that the subsequent drop back to my rainy English reality was met with mixed reactions.

As someone who’s never in their life read a mafia romance, all I can say is the bar has been set extremely high. I’m pretty sure the only thing that could top this is in fact the sequel.

Alla Prossima! 🤌🏼🤌🏼

First of all. Oh my God.

This is my first time writing a review on GR (and that as an ARC reader) I have so much to say and I truly hope that I’ll be able to convey my thoughts as precisely as possible because wow.

I was already familiar with Claire’s writing through the Night series (a personal favorite of mine!) but this one still caught me off guard in the best way possible. I was always on the verge of wanting to consume this book but also savor it at the same time. I wanted to keep reading with no halt but also didn’t want it to end at all.

Even though I’m an avid romance reader, I haven’t been THIS responsive to a book while reading it in a long time. I found myself giggling countless times, kicking my feet around, blushing, covering my mouth with my palm to scream, switching my seating positions from casually laying back to sitting up straight in excitement to get ready for the next scene — seriously, I even had to stop reading for a few seconds to let the scenes sink in sometimes 😩

And all because of what? Because the chemistry between the two main characters (Adella and Leo) was INSANE. The tension between them, the build-up, their banter, the development — all of it was done SO nicely and naturally that I couldn’t help but get even more immersed into the book. Every scene they shared together was simply gold and I wish sooo badly that I could share some spoilers to show what I mean!!

(By the way, all my favorite tropes met each other for these two — marriage of convenience, childhood friends to “”enemies”” to lovers, forced proximity and more 🤭🤭)

The characters simply felt so realistic with their thought process and mannerism which made it infinitely easier to feel connected to them and understand why they are doing what they are doing. Even aside from our lovely main characters, the contribution of the side characters was done SO nicely too, even with the “little” time we’ve read about them, it still feels like we’re extremely familiar with them (alez is my favorite btw. best boy!!)

Also every time I thought I knew which route the story was taking, Claire slapped me with another plot twist and called me a clown 😩 wasn’t expecting ANY of those at all. It took me quite some while to gather my thoughts after finishing this book 😭😭

If we come to the writing - absolutely GORGEOUS. there were so many beautifully written paragraphs and sentences that I couldn’t help but highlight them. She’s genuinely so talented that I could sit here and fangirl over her writing for some hours tbh

All in all — this book was easily a 10/10 for me. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ five stars and nothing less. I’m already patiently waiting for the next book to see how their journey will continue!!

Claire is a jewel. I said that once and I’ll say that over and over again. I feel so lucky to have discovered her!!

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review and first, I want to thank Claire for allowing me an advanced copy to get my greedy hands on! (Even though the selection was random lol)

Heart of Stone is the first book in a childhood friends-to-lovers Mafia romance, following Adella and Leo as they navigate their lives now that they are engaged to be married. Too bad they can't stand each other. Adella has known Leo since she was two years old, and yet he's the last person she wants to marry. When sudden events force them to go into hiding together, Adella realizes she can no longer deny the magnetic attraction she and Leo have, and that she can no longer deny what her heart wants. Leo is dark, dangerous, and unyielding. Is she willing to give up her heart to him?

I've been a reader of Claire's ever since she started posting Skin Of The Night on Wattpad and I am so incredibly proud of how far she has come. She's one of my favorite self-made authors and she deserves every piece of praise she receives. Her writing, while it can be sometimes technical, is profound and deep and actually makes you invest in the plot and story she's spinning. Her writing isn't brainless smutty romance (which I do enjoy that kind of romance as well), and she does her best to bring deeper meaning to her work.

Heart of Stone was fast-paced and delicious. The childhood friends to lovers trope provided a solid foundation for Adella's and Leo's relationship to grow and become strong. Adella is multi-faceted and holds her own throughout the book - she's not afraid to speak her mind, defend herself, and be unapologetically herself. I also very much approved and enjoyed that Claire decided to explore the topics of asexuality and demisexuality. You don't normally see it in romance, and if you see other sexualities explored, they're usually bisexuality and homosexuality. I liked that Claire wanted to delve into something out of the norm for romance (at least, this was new to me in the realm of romance).

I also enjoyed that it was evident that Claire took her time with research and to build up a plot that was decently accurate and made sense. Most Mafia romances focus more on the romance and less on whether or not their depiction of the Mafia is accurate lol. It was refreshing! I liked that Adella wanted to be involved in the affairs that Leo and her family are involved in - it makes her more of a shining character and more multi-dimensional. I also enjoyed that Adella and Leo complement each other so well even though the first part of the book, their relationship was less loving and more hostile. Adella soothes Leo's darkness while Leo brings out a wild edge to Adella that isn't normally seen.

All in all, I expected the best from Claire and I got it! I enjoyed every inch of the book and I can't wait to see how she's going to continue Adella's and Leo's story after THAT PLOT TWIST AT THE END. An amazing book from an amazing person.

April 2022 - Giving this 5 stars before even reading it because I have blind faith in Claire 😂❤️

June 2022

Claire is such a phenomenal writer. I was first introduced to her writing with the Night series and loved every delicious bit of those books. In saying that, this woman does cliffhangers like it’s nobody’s business so I was super scared to read anything else by her unless every book was already released. With my fear tucked under my proverbial arm, I started this book thinking it was a stand-alone and I would have some modicum of satisfaction at the end - boy oh boy was I wrong. Let’s just rechristen Claire, Miss. Cliffhanger shall we? But am I upset? Absolutely not. This book was beyond anything I expected. Claire’s take on mafia romance like everything else she writes is different without being pretentious. It was juicy, humorous, suspenseful, steamy and had so much swoon worthy content. Leo is definitely book husband top 10 and Ade has one of the wittiest brains! Such a phenomenal read. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

*Look up trigger warnings as this story mentions some dark topics

Honestly anything written and created by C.K. Bennett is always a solid YES! For me. This story was different compared to Bennett’s other books of, “Skin of The Night” and “Into the Night”, but in the best way possible. This was a mafia dark romance story that involved violence, danger, some suspense, a morally gray male lead, and of course romance. From beginning to end, there was a great amount of detail that added to the overall plot line and it goes to show that Claire carefully crafted this story with the utmost precision. If you’re looking for more books to read by Claire, look no further because, “Heart of Stone” is the next story that’ll leave you excited and wanting more.

This story followed Adella and Leo. Each came from a powerful mafia family and in order to keep the alliance between their families, their parents arranged for them to be married (engaged for the most and plan to get married later on). For all of her life, Adella grew up alongside Leo and his family and always knew that it was her duty to one day marry Leo for the sake of her family. Coming from powerful families, both Leo and Adella were faced with expectations to live up to. Leo would one day become the Don of the Cifarelli family and alongside him Adella would be his wife. In the beginning, Adella thought she never had any romantic feelings for Leo throughout her years of knowing him. Obviously later on in the story, Adella realized her true feelings for Leo and the revelation of it was a significant moment for her. Before that moment though, Adella just thought of Leo as a very striking handsome man, but for all his cold, serious, standoff-ish behaviors towards her, Adella felt annoyed and irritated by him.

Little by little as the story progressed, I got to see more of Adella and Leo’s personalities come across the pages and I absolutely loved it. Before this book was published, I got to read some of the chapters on Wattpad, so I was already a fan of this story, but with this published version, Claire was able to add more vivid details that enhanced both Adella and Leo’s characters as well as background information that was significant to the story. I’m a sucker for good banter and Adella and Leo delivered witty, smart, and hilarious banter. I loved seeing how even though Leo was usually the one in control, there were moments where Adella would catch Leo off guard and take over the reins. My girl Adella was a spit fire and while Leo would occasionally say she was “naive”, Adella proved him wrong on some occasions that she wasn’t someone to be trifled with.

Another thing I loved about this story was that Adella was someone who was capable of protecting herself. For instance, some would assume that Adella couldn’t protect herself, but in actuality she was trained in Krav Maga. First off, YES! Second, can I learn Krav Maga with Adella? Because that’d be so cool! Anyways, my point being is that Adella was strong in her own right, in a life that most of her life has been decided for her, while being with Leo she was able to find out more about herself and really consider what she wanted. Overall, Adella was definitely a character I loved and admire for her strength while dealing with the aftermath of what occurred earlier on in the story.

Now, as much as I love William Night from the SOTN series, wait til you read about Leo Cifarelli. Leo was a man in his own league, one who kept everything to himself, but was so dang mysterious I wanted to know more about him. Leo was a unique character, he had so many layers to him that once I thought I had him figured out, turns out there was more to him that met the eye. I absolutely loved how Leo could be an equal mixture of a strong leader and have those tender sweet moments with Adella such as, making sure she was alright after that incident with Maximo on the boat or simply calling Adella “teso” or “Cara”, (sigh) I was just swooning and wishing Leo were real and calling me that.

Now Claire is a master in all things when it comes to her stories and let me just say that this book was fantastic and had an amazing balance of everything I could have wanted for this story. In addition, THE SPICE WAS IMMACULATE! WOO! I would say this story had a slow burn romance feel to it since majority of the story was about building up on the growing tension between Adella and Leo. You know the spice is phenomenal when it goes on for 4 consecutive chapters!!!! THOSE CHAPTERS AND ALL THE BUILD UP WAS CHEF’S KIDS! Adella and Leo’s chemistry was amazing and phew THAT STAMINA! Overall, Claire once again delivered on everything from the spice, the intricate plot, well developed characters, and more.

Just when I thought I was already in love with this story, towards the end I was shook! By getting the chance to read Leo’s perspective, I was truly astounded to learn things that were happening in the background of the story. Leo’s chapters really highlighted his point of view and revealed so many details that were connected to Adella, and so much more. That ending left me in suspense but also very excited to see what will happen next in Adella and Leo’s story. Highly recommend reading this book!

This book was one of my most surprising reads of this year if I'm being honest. I went into this with little to expectations other than the fact that this was mafia and childhood enemies. However, I was not expecting the level of angst, tension, romance, and the SPICE in this. I loved every bit of this and I was HOOKED since the beginning. This is my first book by Claire and I am officially a stan. I loved the writing and the pacing. I also liked the side characters in which they not only added more to the story but I felt a genuine connection with them. Adella was fun, fiesty, and just knows what she wants. She doesn't back down to Leo which I thought was amazing. There were some parts where Adella did annoy me and made questionable decisions but her growth in the book was what did it for me. Leo on the otherhand. Wow. He's not just hot but HELLA respectful and possessive and I am so here for it. I am impatiently waiting for the next book and will be reading more of Chloe's books as I wait.

I finished this book in like under a day? I don’t even know what to say istg

It was fucking brilliant. Leo and Adella’s banter? OH MY GOD I WANT THAT KINDA RELATIONSHIP WTH I’M ALMOST 20 WHERE IS MY LEO?!?!?

The plot, the characters, the action, the mystery…everything exceeded my expectations. I was so doubtful about starting this book because it sounded like your average mafia romance. And even though some aspects were similar— it was so much more. I was DELIGHTED to read about Leo and his amore😭 need the sequel RIGHT NOW BECAUSE I WANT MY BABIES BACK!!!!

this book was so wattpad-y. the characters were pretty good but it was weird how Adella like hated on Leo all day long for being too into the mafia and his work but then after he confessed he loved her she was like going off on how she loves how he is so into his work its her favourite part about him. also it was red flag that he was considering killing her and only decided not to since she loved him back. But finding that out that the dad wanted Leo to kill her was CRAZY. concerning how the whole book Adella was not trusting him and thought he was gonna backstab her and she was right

Having been an avid reader and admirer of Bennett's work, I was honoured and thrilled to have been given the opportunity to be an ARC reader for her upcoming book, 'Heart of Stone'. It was definitely different from her prior projects, as this book was more idealistic rather than realistic. However, this idealism only helped us to explore another side of Bennett's work, and allowed us to fall deeper in love with this genius author and her work through the world she created in her newest novel.

The plot of this mafia romance novel follows the familiar trope of arranged marriage. Leo and Adella are destined to marry to form an alliance between their families. The plot is a perfect blend of romance, humour, suspense and action as we follow the main characters' journeys from supposed hatred to love. Common clichés can be expected throughout the novel. However, they are woven and written in a way that is distinct to the author and her style, and is unique to the characters and their journey, which gives the book a fresh feel from typical romance novels. Call it a new perspective on old knowledge.

You can't help falling in love with the characters and the world that is created through flawless prose. The imagery effectively creates characters with whom readers can relate and love, or even despise. The chemistry shared by the main characters is superbly portrayed through Bennett's writing: the contrast of light and darkness between Leo and Adella which shows how perfectly they compliment each other; the symbolism in actions or events recounted. And of course, the passion between them brought out through their sexual interactions, or even simple and playful banter.

For a sweet and romantic, yet thrilling read, I would definitely recommend this book. It is sure to submerge you in a world of tension and passion, and leave you yearning for more with the turn of every page.

To be transparent, I was given the wonderful opportunity to read this book as an ARC winner in exchange for a review!

I have to say, this book gives the reader a rollercoaster of emotions - all the ones that a very well-written and a clearly well loved book deserve and should have. It is balanced with the characters perspectives, the reader is able to obtain an insight into Leo's and Adella's thoughts and feelings as well as their well-crafted individual personalities. There is enough tension to make the reader dedicate their time to the book, but there is not too much that the reader would tire of it, which is tastefully done, I must admit. Enough chemistry between the main characters that make the reader begin to become somewhat enamoured with them; it is not overdone. It is a start to a really wonderful read to become invested within this series.

I cannot finish writing this review without praising the authors writing and their style. That, I believe, is the most important factor of their books. It is clear that the author cares about their writing as well as giving the book the best chance they can give it. The writing is stellar: in the grammar used, the creativity, the right use of sentences at the right time, the choice of wording and the way the characters come alive through their writing. Every small bit of information given to the reader is clearly cared for, and placed very well. It is something that is echoed throughout all of C.K Bennett's books, which is why they're becoming so popular and well-loved.

I was lucky enough to win an ARC copy of this book and be able to read it before it comes out. I’m usually not someone who reads mafia romances, but I loved Claire’s previous novels and I trusted her blindly. And I was not disappointed.

Leo and Adella are both very intelligent and loyal characters, and the interactions between the two, the tension, and the banter, are so delightful to read, not at all like most mafia romances where everything is forced.
The way the plot develops is very well-paced. The events happening throughout the book have a logic and nothing comes out of nowhere. The world-building is amazing, and Claire has a talent writing every description in a way that makes you feel like you're actually living the moment, and feels realistic.
The writing is fantastic, immaculate as always.
And Claire being Claire had to have the most insane plot twist, and I can’t wait to read the next book already! Definetly reccomend this book!

Claire did it again. This book is fricking awesome! There are so many things that I did not see coming and that should give you an idea of how the plot and the characters have got many layers to them. As always, they [the characters] were extremely witty and likeable. It was a solid 10 on 10 book for me! You will love this book if you love:
💫 Mafia romance books
💫 Arranged marriage / Marriage of convenience trope
💫 Jealousy trope
💫 Main characters who have known each other for their entire lives.
💫 Forced proximity trope
💫 Slow burn (There was loads of built up tension 🥵)
I honestly can't get enough of it and cannot wait for the next book of this series to come out!

I received the opportunity to be an ARC reader (thanks again to the author) and I was amazed by this book. Heart of Stone is truly the most interesting romantic book I’ve read. The plot was unlike any other and has you on your toes throughout the book. The writing was just phenomenal and I would 100% recommend this book to every romance reader and any readers outside of the romance genre as this book has many different levels to it.

This is my first ARC Review and I couldn't be more happy that it's one of Claire's books, especially Heart of Stone.

In all of her books she manages to throw curve balls and new twists to stories and thropes I thought I have seen it all. Every time I pick one of CK's stories I know I will find all of my all-time favorities romances thropes but with a new perspective, a new way to view love, friendship, carrer, womanhood, and everything in between.

And this happened again in Heart of Stone, altought it's a mafia book, there is SO MUCH more than this, I feel like I finally found my perfect combination of characters who represented me in Claire's MC (Cara and Adela). Leo is a whole lot of new standards for man, sorry for my next boyfriend, because the bar is in heaven now.

I will post a more throught review once the book is out, but for now I want to say: Thank you Claire, it's more than worth it, it's a wholesome experience, it's everything and much more, it already keeping me in my toes.

Happy almost realising date!!! The book comes out tomorrow 02/05 - so here is a more throughout review about the story itself.

First the plot, mafia romances are well known in this world of books. However, Claire throws a little twists to the story that makes it brand new in the genre, we don't have the typical manwhore that it's usually a sexist man in a hot body (don't fall for that ladies). The new aspects together with the loved thropes makes it fun and unique to read.

The couple and consequently the two main characters are amazing together and individuality. I love how Adela's mind works and how caring yet very serious Leo can be torwards pretty much everything. I think you have to read to experience they, otherwise you will not understand how cool they actually are. The spyce was there and it was really good! But I kinda wanted more, but this is only because I have read the other Claire's series so my standards were high for that. However, the amount of spice was competivable with the couple' story and timeline.

I am more than excited to keep following their stories and love, I already know it's going to be EPIC.

I received an ARC in exchange of an honest review and boy am I glad that I did.

To talk about the characters, Leo is a powerful man with a charmingly handsome and a protective personality. But behind this façade, is a man gripped with darkness. As Adella gets to know more and more about him with each passing day, she unveils a man she never saw before. A man who has experienced things a LOT more than any average man ever could. On the other hand, Adella is a strong, intelligent, stubborn and a loyal woman. She is bold in her opinions and fierce to stand up for the things she feels right. She is highly understanding towards Leo and his actions. The story follows their relationship towards love through scenes of intense passion and high sexual tension. Their chemistry is unmatched. Their love for each other is unconditional.

The plot was exhilarating. There was never once a moment where you could relax. The story always had something that compelled you to keep you on the edge. There were definitely some hilarious moments in addition to moments that made your heart skip a beat. The plot was completely unpredictable. The moment you know where this story is gonna go, you are gonna be struck with an unexpected plot twist.

The world-building was highly intricate. I could see the locations she painted out with her words. It felt like I was actually present in that fictional world. Each and every scene was so well-built with exceptional details that it was impossible not to see it.

The thing that stood out most for me was how this book made me feel. The way with which this book was written made me actually experience the things that the characters went through. Kudos to you, Claire.

I would 100/10 recommend it. To all those mafia loving readers, who have an interest for a childhood friends being in a marriage of convenience turn into a passionate, steamy enemies to lovers romance.

I received Heart of Stone as an ARC. I am so grateful for the opportunity to delve into the Valentino and Cifarelli world. Adella is the only child of the Valentino family, and Leo is the oldest son and future Don of the Cifarelli family. The families who had feuded for years, but came to an agreement with arranging a marriage between Adella and Leo. Adella grew up with the Cifarelli family, and thinking Leo despised her and felt she was a burden. The build up to the truths and how much Leo had done to keep her safe, not to mention the love he kept hidden for her. When the two let down their guard, sparks fly. The emotional aspect of their love story will made your heart smile, and then the physical aspect is explosive. So much love and passion. Annddd ohh Lordt, that Cliffhanger 🤯🤯
I give this story a 5 start, hands down. Thank you Claire for this opportunity. Adella and Leo have truly captured my heart.

I am so grateful that I was able to get an ARC of Heart of Stones. This was an ARC I was really hoping to get... and it did not disappoint. I read the first version on Wattpad and could not wait for it to be published.

Heart of Stone follows the story of Adella and Leo. I am sometimes hesitant to read mafia romances because the male leads tend to lean more cavemen than possessive. Leo is not like that. He is the perfect mix of possessive and respectful. Adella is a headstrong and sometimes naïve female character and Leo takes all she throws at him. Leo and Adella compliment each other so well.

Not only are the characters written extremally well but the story itself is amazing (as is the spice). C.K. Bennet does it again with Heart of Stone. I love reading her stories because of the complex ways she creates and writes her characters. I can't wait to read the rest of this series.

I am SO MAD AT U CK BENNETT!! All the reviews said this was a stand-alone and now I have to painfully wait to see what happens next?😭😭😭 on another note, I’m so glad I can across this book becasue everything about it was perfection!! I literally stayed up until 5am because I was so enamored by it. Leo was an absolute angel while still being a true boss and the slow burn??? Perfection!! Kinda hated how the sex scene was multiple chapters long but considering how it was a good slow burn, it was worth it. But please give me the sequel now😭. I sacrificed studying to read this and it was just so good🥹🥹

Adella Valentino and Leo Cifarelli are promised to each other by a marriage of alliance between their 2 powerful mafia families. Part of the agreement was to have Adella live with the Cifarelli family so her and Leo could grow up close to each other. Adella is skeptical of her future as his wife because she realizes she’ll likely be in a loveless marriage. Leo who is cold, serious, and moody has never given Adella any indication that he sees her in a romantic light. Adella has felt like she’s been a burden to Leo all of her life. But things begin to shift on the night of their engagement party. When a rival threatens Leo, Adella is kidnapped. But Leo, someone who’s always 10 steps ahead of his opponent, was anticipating this and had a plan in place to save Adella. After he took care of his rival (and by take care I do mean he unalived him), he wants to go into hiding with Adella in case the rival’s family comes after them.

Now, they are forced to spend time together and they can’t deny the attraction they feel towards each other. Adella doesn’t want to commit to a marriage where she’ll be a brainless mafia wife who lets her man take care of everything and leave her in the dark. I really liked Adella because she is a very curious person. At 20, she is very young and may be perceived as naive at times but she’s also very wise and not afraid to challenge Leo which I loved. Adella constantly gets under Leo’s skin and its pretty funny.

For a good portion of the book, Leo comes off as very mysterious to the reader. The book is written in Adella’s POV for a majority of the book, until the end when we get some of Leo’s POV. We can’t really get a good read on Leo but we know that he is loyal to his family, powerful, and has a heart of stone. But slowly, as the story goes on, we begin to see Adella chipping away at his stone cold heart and we start to see the real him. We see that Leo actually has a playful side and he’s extremely protective of Adella. Although it took a while for them to accept their feelings for each other, they always shared mutual respect and trust. I loved seeing their relationship grow. It was a slow progression but it was honestly so beautiful because slowly but surely, they both realized they’ve cared for one another all along. Their relationship felt very pure and real— I think because they’ve known each other for so long. It just seemed very natural.

The mafia element to this book done very nicely. It wasn’t super heavy on the mafia content, but I felt like it had the perfect amount with a heavier focus on the love story. I will say this book had less smut than Claire’s previous books but thats ok but the smut scenes she included were genuinely beautiful. This is the first of the series that’ll include three books total so I think its only the beginning for Leo and Adella in the smut department ;)

Ok now, the plot twist at the end!!!!! I was not expecting that, well I was expecting something because I know miss Bennet loves her cliffhangers. But i’m grateful the cliffhanger didn’t leave me in shambles like into the night did lol. All in all, i’m impatiently waiting for book 2 because I need more Leo and Adella content.
