Magic and divinity have been inextricably intertwined since the beginning of time. Since times long lost to history, an oath to the gods has always been the method through which magic power has been gained. In modern times, however, the methods of faith and power have been carefully scrutinized and systematized, opening magic to all who have the drive for power, rather than the truly faithful.
Lily Syashan-- formerly Lily of House Byron-- is a girl from a disgraced noble family, exiled into a peasant village after her parents were executed for treason. She seeks to gain power, wealth, and fame through magic and adventuring, and she isn't planning on letting anything get in her way. When she meets a noble adventurer, though, her most careful preparations won't prepare her for what will come...
To be completely honest, I may be slightly biased about this book. I had a fun time reading it and a fun time writing it, and a lot of the people that have read it have greatly enjoyed it as well--it might be less suitable for a non-webnovel audience, but I do enjoy it a lot :D
This book's premise is sort of similar to Demonic Devourer but without the protagonist being a demon who devours things. By that, I mean that the protagonist is an outcast, who has an atypical set of morals and attitude towards murder, and there's a budding sapphic relationship between the two leads.
I feel like the author's writing really leveled up between Demonic Devourer and now. The world is more fleshed out, and there is a lot more nuance to everything, even in basic conversations. If I had to criticize something, I'd say that I feel like the pacing is sometimes very subtly off. But I'd give the writing level of the author a 4.5/5 by itself.
This quickly jumped to near the top of my favorite ongoing series, and I already pre-ordered the next one.
Maybe 3.5 stars. Cons: - the romance elements feel forced - I can't believe that someone will go on mission after mission when they are coming so close to dead in each one.
