The Spectral Files #4

The Spooky Life

Rate this book
Rain Christiansen isn’t sure he’ll ever fully understand the supernatural. But he’s finally finding his groove as a reluctant medium and cold-case detective. That’s not to say everything is going smoothly—there’s a wedding in the works, after all. He’s finally taking that enormous step with fellow detective, Daniel McKenna, and he couldn’t be happier…about the marriage. Not so much the wedding. The hoopla is enough to make him wish for a quick flight to Vegas and an Elvis officiant.

At least work is keeping Rain and the PTU plenty busy. Their latest case involves Hannah Caldwell, a silent ghost who can’t—or won’t—speak. She still manages to request that they find her dear friend, Cherry Parker, so that she can say goodbye. Piece of cake. Finding people is pretty high on the list of things that Rain does best.

But when it comes to ghosts, nothing is ever quite what it seems. Before long, his simple missing person’s case takes a dark and twisted turn. And Rain realizes he’s been so busy trying to protect Danny that he forgot to protect himself.

If he doesn’t turn things around—and quickly—his spooky life might be cut short for good.

Rain and Danny. I loved them as much as in the previous books. Their dynamics and their banter are still fantastic. I love Rain's humor and Danny is just pure perfection. I wish there was more on page time with them as a couple and less time spent of wedding planning, but the romantic moments made up for it.

The mystery. I have to say that it was my least favorite so far. I found it very intriguing at first, I always enjoy how complex the mysteries in this series are, but I wasn't comfortable with some of the things that happened later on in this story. Also, I feel like the other members of the PTU weren't as involved in the case as before.

The end. Even though I think this could be a satisfying end to the series, I'm counting on Rain and Danny to keep talking to the author in hope that there will be more books about them in the future. I hope Dakota has something to say too, because I would absolutely love a book about him, set in the same world, with Rain and Danny nearby. 🤗

Harmon's writing was perfectly hilarious as always.

I checked the place where my inner nurturer was supposed to be, and a dusty tumbleweed rolled past.

The snark, the banter, the head-over-heels-in-love story was perfect. I need so many more books with Rain and Danny.

“You’re everything. Everything I never knew I needed. Everything I ever wanted. Everything I never thought I deserved. Absolutely everything.” I dropped a kiss on his mouth.

These two men continue to be serious couple goals. The sex and intimacy between them is written so well. The mystery and ghosts were extra terrifying this time around.

5 Stars for the Series!

From the beginning, I’ve really enjoyed this series, not only for the scary paranormal elements but also for the fantastic romance.

I know I’ve not been quiet about my love for Danny who is so swoony sexy and for Rain’s biting humor that only gets better and better. I also always revel in a great supporting cast that gives as good as it takes and makes for a really enjoyable fun ride, enriching the entire experience and again, each book elevates this dynamic.

Harmon in her afterword says it’s not for sure that this is the last we’ll see of Rain and Danny but if it is, I agree with her that this fantastically ended on a high note with plenty of exposition that my epilogue loving self luxuriated in. This excels in all areas - a weak in the knees love story, smexy smex, a compelling mystery with scary heart thumping high stakes (though this time around it was crazy unbelievable), and a protagonist that sings to my funny bone and his lover who intoxicatingly appeals to my heart.

Overall, this will remain a favorite memorable series and should Harmon revisit these two, without a doubt I’ll be all in!

DANNY & RAIN 4EVA 🥹🧡😍

I cannot express to you how much I adore these two incredible men. They are, without a doubt, THE best established couple I’ve ever come across. I’m still in love with Rain’s dry humour and Danny’s all around chill, loving attitude. I could read about them forever and never get tired of them 😭

That said, I think this still was my least fav of the series so far.
Because WOW, did the mother get on my nerves. She was honestly unbearable 😳 The wedding content in general wasn’t really my thing, mostly because of her but also because I hated that Danny and Rain let her bulldoze over everything.

Also: The case in this one wasn’t as engaging to me for some reason and like… super weird?? I’m still not sure I really understood what was going on there. Definitely the weakest mystery so far, at least for me.

But Rain and Danny and how this book ended WERE ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING 😭 How the wedding eventually turned out, thankfully, was perfect, JUST SO PERFECT. Ugh, I love them.

So yeah, this was still highly enjoyable, despite my niggles 🫶

Really enjoyed this again, particularly Rain and Danny - as always. So much yumminess and heat! So much love and dedication!
On the 'spooky' front I do have quite a few questions, the main ones - how come some ghosts have so much power in the afterlife? How come they can use it like this 'villain ghost'? How come Rain is not aware of this?
Tbh, I was shocked (again) what happens in the last third of the book. But somehow that massively traumatic and shit-scary event was put aside so easily and quickly, it didn't feel right. But then again, maybe I shouldn't judge by the fact that I would have probably been in lifelong therapy after that! 😅
Loved Danny and Rain on honeymoon, and now cannot wait to read the final book!

original review

Facts:

I love …

… this series.
… Rain. His self-deprecating, sarky humour is stellar!
… Danny. That guy is the biggest caring, protective teddy-bear.
… Rain and Danny. Seeing them so happy together is fabulous.
… Dakota.I can’t believe how that guy has grown on me!
… all the secondary characters: the guys at work, Rain’s parents, the ghosts.

… the case: the plot is really well structured, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. As usual, Rain gets himself into different trouble again, pretty serious trouble, actually.
To be honest: I would have liked a little bit more depth about what is going on with his powers here. It’s all kept very simple and easy, which is ok, but I can’t help being curious about the whole thing.

Not sure if there will be more books in this series, but if there are, I’ll certainly be there!

So first of all I love this series. I love Rain and Danny and I really, really hope and wish that they speak to the author again so we get another book.

With that said, the mystery part of this one was probably my least favorite in the series. Not that it wasn't great, because it was. It just wasn't as exciting as the other ones. I found it a little hard to focus on it.

This author is an insta buy for me and this series is just one of the few that I love.

Rain and Danny cemented themselves as one of my favorite couples in this last book of The Spectral Files.

What I loved:
1. Rain and his whole attitude.
2. Danny and his whole existence. He was just #Goals in this book.
3. The banter... it was hilarious and not OTT.
4. The nicknames... especially Moonbeam.
5. The fact that they didn't let Danny's mom steamroll them about the wedding.
6. The Case: it was intriguing.
7. The sex scenes... they were fun and sexy.
8. THEY'RE FINALLY MARRIED.

Loved this book and I absolutely love this series. I will definitely be revisiting this series via audiobook as soon as it's complete❤

Rain and Danny of my favourite couples ever. Like… EVER ever.

And that’s why I’ll rate this book with 5 stars, even if the murder mystery wasn’t my favourite from this series.

But let’s start at the beginning. And yes, I know the book came out 1 year ago, so I’m not exactly new to the party, but I waited for the audio (come on… who wouldn’t wait for Kirt Graves?). And yes, the audio came out a few months ago, but somehow I forgot is out there. Or maybe I was saving it for later 😬

Anyway. I digress. This series follows Rain(cloud), an ex FBI agent who can see and interact with ghosts, and Danny, whom me meets (again) in book one. A cop. And Rain’s ex. So if you ask me if you need to start with the first book: yes, you definitely do. The main murder mystery cases are standalone, but to fully enjoy their relationship and to understand Rain’s abilities, you need to start at the beginning. But trust me, it’s no hardship. In fact, as I write this review, I’m thinking about re-listening to the series because I’m not ready yet to let them go.

Because - as mentioned before - Rain and Danny are two of the best characters (and couples) ever written. I want to know them in real life, and bask in their banter, and their love for each other. It’s hard to explain- they’re not sappy, far from it. But their love, and their affection and their understanding for each other is so strong and warm, that I feel like being close to them would make my life better. And isn’t that one of the best compliments you can give an author?

The book starts where the previous one left: after deciding to marry, Danny’s mother wants to give them THE best wedding and drives them both crazy with her planning. On one of the potential wedding venues, Rain sees a ghost of a woman - who, after some prodding, reveals she’s looking for a woman from her past to “say goodbye”.

You can guess that things aren’t as simple as that, but because the mystery isn’t my favourite tbh, I won’t go into it. Just let it be known that I absolutely HATE body snatchers 😣

As for Rain and Danny: please, dear author, if you ever feel like the characters are “talking to you again” and “have a story to tell”, don’t hesitate to give them another book, I beg you. I know you left them in a good place, but please give us more! Maybe in a spin-off? (Hint hint)

To make it short: if you trust me and my reviews, you love a well written mm relationship, and a bit of supernatural stuff doesn’t scare you off - give this series a go, and if you’re into audiobooks, definitely go with it here!

4.5 stars rounded up because they deserve nothing less ❤️

Rain and Danny have been one of my favorite couples ever since their first book. I love their dynamics, their banter and their unconditional love for each other. It’s always such a delight and so much fun to be inside Rain’s head!

I don’t want to spoil this book, but it’s another supernatural adventure that isn’t going as smoothly as Rain and Danny and their team would have liked. At first I thought there were quite some loose ends, but of course S.E. Harmon makes them come together very smoothly. I just can’t help but love everything she writes and her characters always end up on my favorites list!

Besides the spooky adventures, there is also going to be a wedding. Finally! But there’s a lot of mingling and well meant help from others (read: Danny’s mother) and eventually everything is also not going the way things are planned, in true Rain and Danny style. I loved how S.E. Harmon made it turn out because it was so true to who Danny and Rain were! It just suited them perfectly.

This book might be the last one in the series, but on her FB page the author has already confessed she doesn’t know for sure. Depending on when and if Danny and Rain will be speaking up again, demanding another book. Well, I hope they do, in Rain’s own demanding, stubborn style, because I don’t think I’m ready to say goodbye to these guys yet. But if this is where it ends, I have to admit it leaves me with a satisfied feeling of how things turned out. I’ll miss these guys, but I know they’ll be fine and their future together is solid and filled with love and fun and witty banter, while Rain finally feels comfortable being a medium who solves cold cases.

Definitely the weirdest book so far, but I haven't been able to put any of this series down except to sleep.

Rain and Danny's adventures are just pure entertainment and there's a good dose of angst, happiness and craziness in every installment, which I love. This was the easiest crime to work out pretty quickly also, but it was still enjoyable to go on the journey with Rain.

I do hope there will be more of them in future, but it also ended at a really good point too. Again my only complaint is that I want Danny's POV!

I'd definitely love to see more of Dakota though and his plant 'magic' because he's the most intriguing side character throughout the whole series.

I don't want to spoil the story, so I'll just say this...

Danny and Rain are back solving crimes and trying planning a wedding but Danny's mom isn't making it easy.

While checking out a potential wedding venue, Rain is approached by a ghost named Hannah. Hannah doesn't seem capable of talking but gives Rain the instructions to find a woman named Cherry Parker. This leads Rain and the team to reopen a 17-year-old missing person case. But like everything in Rain's life, nothing about the case is as it seems.

I really enjoyed this one. Danny and Rain's love is stronger than ever. There are so many lovely moments shared between the two. The mystery of the case kept me captivated. I just love how the author slowly unravels the truth. It was a bit scary discovering another level of how the ghost could affect Rain's life. My one niggle is that I needed to know what happened with Cherry Parker's family in the end. But still, I highly recommend this one.

I am not sure about it...It was definitely not a 4 star read but I enjoyed it more than most 3-stars of mine. In the start, I only stayed for the relationship because the mystery was so bland. But, then came the twist in the tale, the mystery got intensified and I was getting the feeling that I should not be reading this at 2 AM when I am alone in my flat with some invisible ghost. 😁😁😁

But, the ending was loosely and hurriedly done. It even feels clumsy so 3-star it is.

Wow did I ever slow roll reading this one 😅 There was no particular reason it took me so long other than that I've been on an audiobook kick recently and haven't spent as much time reading with my eyes the last few weeks. I wanted to finish before Halloween, but here we are 🙃

I don't know if it's because it took me so long to get through it that it didn't hit the same as the prior books in the series, or I just didn't enjoy the case as much, but this has probably been my least favorite of the series to date. I'm still rounding up to 5* because I love Rain and Danny with my whole heart, and I got to see my boys finally get hitched 🥰

I'm glad this isn't the last in the series, but I know I'm going to take my sweet time getting to the next one because I'm not going to be ready to say goodbye to these guys. Spooky Season 2025 sounds about right 😂

I'll never get tired of Rainstorm and Danny ..

“How long should we wait before we acknowledge that he’s running?” I asked.
He sighed. “Right about now, I guess. You bust in the door, and I’ll cover you.”
“Bust in the….” I looked at him with my mouth open. “Have you lost your mind? Do I look like SWAT to you?”
“It’s a shitty door.”
“Then you can break a foot kicking it in.”

The story got a little crazier (is that possible?) and I loved it. Rain and Danny are their usual grumpy hilarious (Rain) and sweet and gorgeous (Danny, sorry Rain) selves and I can’t get enough of them.

The ghosts are getting scarier and their powers more confusing, and I actually really enjoyed it all.

Oooo probably one of my favourites in the series. I did not guess a thing but I loved it.

Danny and Rain are goals 😭 like that is a love I aspire to. They’re just obsessed with each other but in a very I still see you for the very human being you are with faults and flaws.

I listened to this one on audible because I saw it was Kirt Graves and I love his narration so much.

So so glad I picked up this series, it’s been so much fun and I timed it well with the release of book 5 😂 now I don’t have to wait!

2023 Reread

I feel much the same as I did the first time around. I still love these two, but I found their inability to tell their friends/family what they actually wanted for their wedding to be incredibly annoying/to drag on for way too long, and the mystery here was really messy and didn't make a lot of sense. There were some cool things with the mystery plot but I really wish the author had spent more time having it edited and refining it so it was less of a mess.

Original 2022 Review

3.5 rounded down

What can I say? I love this pairing, even when the story isn't as strong as I want it to be. I really waffled on rounded up or down, just because I do love Rain and Danny so much, but in the end, I feel like this is weaker than the rest of the series, with a sloppier mystery and just generally a less clear vision and direction.

The wedding stuff and how long it dragged on without them putting their feet down was annoying, and the mystery was a little confusing and just...fuzzy and kind of all over the palce. The whole mystical time/space travel at the end had me scratching my head (HOW DID HE GET INTO THE WELL IRL??) and I'm pretty sure there were inconsistencies in the timeline for various events in the case--Cherry disappeared 17 years ago, the trial for the baddie had happened 7 years before that, and we're supposed to believe that Cherry hid out nearby as a live-in nurse for 17 years and abandoned her entire family because she was afraid of one woman and for some reason couldn't tell anybody, like the police??? And her daughter never tells this secret and basically displays zero interest in what scared her mom so badly she abandoned them. It was all a little implausible, particularly given the long timeline.

IDK, I could keep picking at it, because I really do feel like this one was pretty messy, but I continue to love Rain and Danny together so much, that I still enjoyed! They feel quite solid and settled, and this felt like a good place to end the series if the author doesn't end up getting an idea for future books.

I'd truly understand if this was a ... bookmark for this story thread. I mean it's not like Rain has put a dent in the ,"Getting souls to complete their Earthly business!"

Let's celebrate the vacation! Yohoo Hoo! The renovation opened up their dream home for visitors or more occupants aka children. They got a fur baby. Watson a old dog in need of a new home. It wasn't his fault that is previous roomie was a murder. Whom was blackmailed by a serial killer.

Just got to get through the wedding. Cause it looks like Danny's Mother wants only the best for her only child. Not knowing Rain and Danny aren't all that traditional.

Re-read May 2025

Once again my original review stands. I forgot how menacing the spirit is in this book. Rain is learning so much about his supernatural abilities and they go so much farther than he ever realized.

The relationship between Rain and Danny is so beautiful. I love these two so much. Their friends and families make everything even better, the characters in these books just really add so much to the story. There isn’t any down time in these books, they are full of so much and I’ve never once been bored.

I highly recommend this series. The next book is the last one and I don’t want to reread it right away because I’ll be sad to end this series again.

___________________________________________________

I am writing my review in pieces since I keep thinking about this book. I don’t remember the other books being so funny! Rain is hilarious. This was by far the best for me in the series. Danny is swoon worthy and the cast of characters are terrific; Rain’s parents, Danny’s mom, Kevin, Nick, Tabitha, Dakota & Watson, that sweet dog!

It was such a joy to read this book. It was funny, it was witty, it was romantic as hell. All of that was wrapped up in a case that Rain, Danny and their team are trying to solve while Rain is being visited by ghosts. Oh, and they’re trying to plan a wedding on top of it all. A wedding that has gotten more lavish by the day with Danny’s mom helping with the planning.

The spirit Rain is dealing with the most has him trying to find a woman who disappeared 17 years ago. No one knows if she’s dead or alive. This was a really strange and spooky case when it came to Hannah, the spirit who wants him to find this woman. It was very different from the other ghosts he’s dealt with and so surprising. I loved how everything unfolded.

If this is the last story in this series then I’m satisfied but I really hope we can get more from these characters! I also still want Dakota to get a book! I have adored him since the last book. This book is a favorite of 2022 for sure.

4.5 stars. Near. Fucking. Perfection. Although I’m sure when I reread this, I’ll upgrade it to five stars.

Anyone who has seen my previous reviews knows I’m absolutely obsessed with these books and this couple. Even though they deal with ghosts, I honestly find their love so realistic and so sweet.

Rain’s interactions with ghosts ramp up another level and it gets absolutely wild in this book. It’s all very stressful and entertaining, but best of all is through everything he and Danny are super strong and constant and SO in love. I only wish there had been more on page interactions between them because their banter and affection is so perfect.

The mystery is good, but my least favourite of the books. I missed the legwork with the entire team of detectives once the plot thickened, and I felt that Cherry’s storyline was unfinished with her family. There is a crazy eventful thing that happens between Rain and the ghost which I feel wasn’t well explained and I would’ve loved to have that fleshed out a bit more.

I absolutely adored the wedding, although I had to wonder where Chevy was. I cannot express enough how much I love everything that comes out of Rain and Danny’s mouth and how they interact with each other. These books are so sharply and witty.

While I do want another book between these two, I do NOT want to see Danny and Rain with kids. I know I am biased and I think romance novels should be generally childless. However, I think the author’s decision to have a couple, in which one routinely gets harassed and both mentally and physically affected by ghosts to the point he isn’t even present, have children makes zero sense to me. It just seems like forcing heteronormativity on a couple who make more sense not having kids. So I would absolutely love another book about these two because they’re one of my all time favourite romance couples, I don’t want to read about them being parents. I would also love a spin-off involving Dakota!

The title The Spooky Life should give slight clue about what this book is all about. It's Rain and Danny, working on a case (when Rain encounters a spirit that asks her to find a missing person) while navigating their wedding plan, organized by Danny's MomZilla 😄

It's great to see Rain has settled down with his "gift" (although there's a moment when he contemplates Dakota's offer about losing his light that attracts ghosts forever); realizing that his gift is what makes Rain, Rain. And Danny will always be there supporting him, accepting all these parts of him. Best example is in this book when .

I will admit that at times I think the personal part (especially the wedding plan) disturbs the flow of the investigation part... I'm SORRY, but I always be more interested with the mystery/murder/cold case first 🙈. But I cannot begrudge it too much because the case itself takes an interesting trajectory that I don't see coming, and that needs a big thumbs up on its own.

There's professional work, there's relationship, laugh, banters, great sex in between. We, as readers, can definitely see what life will be with Rain and Danny, only this time with legal definition of being husbands... but nothing change much. And that what makes this installment a happy place to (maybe) end the series? I mean, I won't mind if there's another book of course. But like the author said, if this is the final one, I'm happy where we leave Rain and Danny

⭐︎ 4.5 "Spooky" Stars! ⭐︎

I love this series so much. I love Rain and Danny so much.

In this installment in the series, we get Rain and Danny having to deal with wedding planning, mainly Danny's mother driving them crazy with the planning she's basically doing.

But also we get our ghostly case of the week. Or, what seems like several but are all connected.

When Rain is at a potential wedding venue, he sees a ghost who won't speak. This sets off the events of the book.

This book just proves that as many nice, good ghosts there are, there are still malevolent ones. But they might just pretend they're good ones....

As time goes on and Rain an the team are investigating a missing woman, Cherry Parker, and the closer they get to the truth, the more things start getting weird for Rain. There's a few incidents where he doesn't remember anything, such as interacting with Danny or his mother. He starts losing these pockets of time and it's pretty freaky, especially when we find out why that was and what a ghosts ultimate plans are.

Interspersed with the ghostly case is Danny and Rain being perfection. I absolutely cannot get enough of them. I love Rain trying to pretend like he isn't head over heels in love Danny, and then not being help being all googly-eyed for him, and then being disgusted and how googly-eyed he is for him.

The same goes for Danny. He'd make quips, but he'd always be smiling and googly-eyed over Rain.

The only time I was craving Danny's POV in this was near the end when

That under the spoiler tag was one part of why I decided to give .5 stars off of of this. Also I would have loved to see their full wedding? I wish authors wouldn't do this, where they skip over the wedding of the main couple. Like why?

Like we get the lead up to the wedding, and we even get Rain's saying great things to Danny that are practically his vows, but I wanted to see the actual wedding. It says they both cried during it, well I want to see what made them cry! I want to see my fave couple get married. I know all they needed was a judge at the courthouse, and so the actual wedding wasn't as big a deal to Rain and Danny, but I still would have liked to see it.

Note to authors: Don't skimp out on the main couple's wedding. Especially if it's a beloved couple. Trust us, we readers WANT to see that shit. It's so disappointing when we don't get it.

That was my big reason for .5 stars off. It just frustrated me. Which is really the only part, along with what I talked about in the spoiler tag, that frustrated me while reading this.

Not enough to round down or anything, but enough that I couldn't give this the full 5 stars I wanted to. But change those two frustrations, and this would be a 5 stars read.

The rest of this was so good and entertaining and kept be hooked. The only reason this took me so long was I was on vacation, plus Heartstopper came out on Netflix and I was all about it for a few days. If not for that, I would have finished this in a reasonable time.

Once we really got into the ghostly mystery as well, it really picked up and I couldn't put it down. Things get WILD near the end and I was on the edge of my seat wondering if Rain was going to get out of that mess.

Thankfully he did and he dealt with the dastardly ghost as well.

The ending of this was a pretty good and solid HEA, if this is where the author chooses to end the series. (She said in her AN that she doesn't know if this is the end of the series or not, and it all depends if she feels she could write more with the characters and everything.) So if it is or isn't, there is always room for more ghostly cases with Rain and Danny, but also they ended on such a happy, settled note that if this IS the end, that's okay too.

There's avenue's for continuing, if the author so chooses. (Like, Rain and Danny potentially having kids. Rain was open to the idea, soooo. Also a somewhat open end with said dastardly ghost, who could come back and cause more trouble...)

So either way, I'm happy with this installment overall and where Rain and Danny end up. I'm always happy for more of them, but okay if we don't get more.

Definitely recommend this book, it is a definite two thumbs up from me!😍
