Careful is on the run, she was in the wrong place at the wrong time and now the mob is after her. She's been on the run for two years but when they find her in a small town she's saved by a mysterious stranger named Freedman. This story starts out with a great premise that captures your interest it just had some missteps for me.
The author takes you into a secret society of assassins that have been around for hundreds of years. The action and adventure really keeps you wanting to know what will happen next. The author also does a great job of detailing the back story of Careful and Freedman, you can see why the two characters would gravitate towards each other. The sexual tension between the two told from Freedman's point of view, brings the heat.
Unfortunately there's some missteps in this story that left me uncomfortable. This is an age gap story Freedman is 33 and Careful has just turned 20. This story would have worked better if she was a little bit older. Careful is described as looking like a teenager and she even has purple braces. She also has a mind of teenager based on her actions and reactive personality. It made it a bit uncomfortable to even read Freedman's sexual thoughts about the character. I think the author realized it as well because mid way through the story the sexual tension is pretty tame and the sex scenes weren't that well written and always told from Careful's pov. The other issue is that the plot and the reveals are so all over the place like puzzle pieces that don't fit together.
Overall, I would say this is a good first effort by the author. Based on the previews at the end there will be more stories about the other assassins. I would give this a 3.5 star read and would recommend this for anyone looking for a good action and adventure. Note this book is not on KU so definitely read the sample before purchasing.

Loved the writing style very much and could only put it down cause eventually needed some sleep. Suspenseful, hot, depicting characters who managed to rebuild a life despite complex pasts, demonstrating loyalty and the selflessness innate to true love… Cannot wait for the Messorem series to continue!

So I just destroyed this book in one sitting.
Want to read a broody stoic hotty fall in love with the innocent virgin? How about some mob bosses and mafia shoot outs? Protect her at all costs *swoon, I don't believe in love except with her..? STOP.
