I read the first line and was like, "Wait, I know that line." Uncle Google came in handy at a time like this. Yes, this was the book I dnf because of the sheer boredom in the first few chapters. It had rave reviews in NU. I just read the spoiler forum to know the entire plot. What can I say. I love spoiler. But, seriously, the first few chapters was snooze fest for me.

This was a nice fluffy story, a little bit different from my other recent reads in that there was no gaming component to it.

The premise is that Song Xiao and Yu Tang, who were emperor and empress in a previous life, get reincarnated into the modern world in the bodies of teenagers, with their memories intact. Well it's not reincarnation exactly, more like they are plopped into an existing body.

**Warning: Spoilers Ahead**

There a couple distinct arcs to the story. The first focuses on them in middle and high school and getting adjusted and their relationship dynamics in this modern life, where they each don't have to worry about titles or responsibilities. This part has a bunch of family drama for Song Xiao, as his dad is an idiot who can't handle his mistresses apparently, and Song Xiao gets saddled with not one but two conniving woman who are after his dad's money. I thought this part was a bit overkill, as one potential stepmom would've been enough. Not sure why the author wanted to throw a second woman in there.

The second arc focuses on them in college combined with work. Song Xiao and Yu Tang both go to the US and balance their studies with work, especially for Yu Tang who's trying to prove himself to his grandfather and "win" over all of his uncles and cousins to take over the family business. Song Xiao's family drama is mostly resolved at this point, and we get a more in-depth look at Yu Tang's messed up family dynamics. Pretty much everyone in his family is trying to screw him over, even to the point of arranging Song Xiao to be kidnapped. Luckily Yu Tang is super smart and is a step ahead of everyone.

The last arc focuses on them post graduation as they're both working. Yu Tang is in charge of all Chinese affairs for his family, and Song Xiao has essentially taken over as chairman for Xinghai Entertainment, in place of his dad. This section was hilarious. It's a bit complicated to explain, but there are fans who created a whole forum dedicated a smutty book retelling of the emperor and empress's relationship. People noticed that Song Xiao and Yu Tang look exactly like the emperor and empress based on paintings and started posting pictures to the forum, which leads to a whole lot of speculation about their relationship. As someone who's recently gotten introduced to the CP scene in China, it was interesting reading about this fictional CP, as a lot of it rings true for real world CPs.

Overall I enjoyed the story. I appreciated that they got together quickly, and the rest of the book was focused on both of them overcoming their individual challenges. The story follows the entirety of their relationship, from when they "get together" again to coming out to their parents to marriage, which is rare to see in the danmei books I've read. It was nice to imagine a fictional China where all this would've been possible.

The theater dialogues at the end of each chapter were really cute sometimes, and I enjoyed the additional insight they offered to each chapter.

Here are some of my favorite quotes from the story that had me chuckling:

When Song Xiao emerged from the bathroom, he saw Yu Tang sitting on a bar stool with a solemn face, one hand holding a glass of cola with ice in it while the fingers of the other tapped on a thick contract.

“What’s this?” Hair dripping wet, Song Xiao leaned over for a look.

Yu Tang shot him a distasteful glance, and snatched the towel away to rub Song Xiao’s hair. His short hair dried quickly, but stuck up all over from being rubbed, which gave him a pretty gothic look.

Song Xiao raised a hand to push his hair back, then poured himself a cup of cola.

“Xinghai Entertainment has gotten the money.” Yu Tang showed him the text message, then slipped a pen into Song Xiao’s hand. “Sign ba.”

“Huh?” Song Xiao was blank as he held the pen. He looked at the serious Yu Tang, then at the contract on the table. Clearly written in three large words was the title ‘Body Selling Contract’.

Party A was Yu Tang and Party B was Song Xiao. Like what Yu Tang had said before, it really was a lovers’ contract… It was just that even a novel wouldn’t list down all of this, right?

Clause 7: Party B must guarantee that after reaching adulthood, he must serve in bed no less than three times a week. If it is less than three times a week, it will be carried over to the following week, and all accounts must be settled by the end of the month. If they are not settled by the end of the month, the number of times will be doubled in the following month.

Clause 23: When showering, Party B is not allowed to close the door, to ensure that Party A can enter the bathroom at any time. If Party B does not cooperate, Party A reserves the right to break down the door and enter.

…Song Xiao looked at each and every clause – even minor details like ‘must lean on Party A’s chest and not allowed to stay at a distance while sleeping’ and ‘give Party A a massage before sleep’ were included. The most excessive one was the last clause.

Clause 98: If Party B is pregnant after the termination of the contract, he is not allowed to run away with the child, and must return to Party A’s side to get married!

Little Theater

Xiaoxiao: Your Majesty, what strange book did you read this time?

Fish Tang: Everything zhen reads is about ways to rule a country

Xiao An: (weakly raises hand) Does ‘Overbearing Chairman Fell In Love With Me’ also count?

Fish Tang: Zhen has long stopped reading that

Xiaoxiao: Then what are you reading now?

Fish Tang: ‘Two-Faced Chairman’s Little Pampered Wife’

Xiaoxiao: …

Internet users born with an innate pair of eyes for gay love became excited as if they were injected with chicken blood, and began to work hard at pulling out past Weibo posts and media photos. It wouldn’t have mattered if there wasn’t anything to compare, but there was a huge discovery when they started making comparisons.

Everyone discovered that the watch Yu Tang wore was something Song Xiao had worn when participating in certain events. The small bonsai on Song Xiao’s table revealed its head in an early photo of Yu Tang’s office. The day before, Song Xiao said that he had eaten particularly delicious lobster, and that night, Yu Tang revealed a heap of gourmet food, and one of the dishes was delicious-looking lobster…

The Internet went crazy at these comparisons, and fans clutched their chests one after another and expressed that this definitely wasn’t a pure male-male relationship. Someone even claimed that they would live stream themself eating their handphone if the two of them weren’t engaged.

This is such a cute, sweet novel. There's a bit of drama but I loved how the couple was able to resolve their misunderstandings from their past life when they reincarnate. Don't read this book if you're looking for anything deep - the author is just delivering a humorous fluffy romance. The small threaters at the end of some chapters were especially adorable and really added to the characterization of the couple.

I do have to say there is a bit of an unequal relationship in the story, where the "emperor" doesn't take others opinions into consideration before taking what he wants. It works in this story because what the emperor wants is usually what the "empress" secretly wants as well, but this isn't commonly the case in real life. At least you get the sense that the "empress" has the ability to reign in the emperor when he really objects.

The other thing, which is common in Chinese books (especially one's that need to get past censors) is the nationalism. The fan translation does a good job of dialing back some of the cringe-worthy parts, but it's still there, especially when the setting changes to the US.

Regardless, the novel left me in a wonderful mood. I only wish the author had fleshed out some of the side characters more. I loved the secret body guard and the butler and the two actors who act out their story and the calligraphy grandfather. If they had side stories this novel would have been complete.

Would’ve been a four, but it felt dirty how the author kept putting down other nationalities. I understand when this was written, but I think the authors views haven’t really changed. It’s a shame since the story is cute, you just have to ignore the whole going abroad arc 🙄

actual review below (it’s a bit of a rant in the beginning lol)

This would’ve been the 4 if the author hadn’t included all the derogatory and racist commentary on American as a society (including all the different nationalities/ethnicities in this one country). It was gross and honestly embarrassing bc you could see how the author didn’t even know what they were writing about. The author obviously did absolutely no research on literally anything, yet decided to make the MC’s go abroad so further their education. I understand they want to be patriotic to their own country, but all they did was embarrass themselves. The translator apparently tried to soften up all the racism in the book. Knowing that and reading how bad it was now, I don’t want to know how bad the raws were.

This is an older book so it wasn’t surprising seeing lot of older type of cliches and stereotypes. It’s overdramatized, which you’ll see early on. It’s a very light and cute read (till you get the the going abroad arc). This book is the type where you can leave for weeks and not have to reread bc you won’t miss anything. Just the names, but I didn’t even learn their names and it was fine lol (there were a lot of family members )

There wasn’t a lot of character development and the plot was predictable, it wasn’t bad but it couldn’t been a lot better.

If the constant racism, misogyny, and homophobic tropes don't put you off then the horrible writing, boring and cliche plot, and badly written characters will. I believe the translator did a good job but there's only so much you can do when the source material is so shitty.

pros: cute mc, couple had their cute moments, fair enough side characters, good writing style and translation, mc got better towards the end, some nice side characters (mu chen and qiao su at the end for example, they seemed sweet), in regards to the cons listed: most of them got kinda better after around chapter 90?? so finishing the novel from there on wasn’t that bad anymore and pretty good

cons: relationship was always lowkey uncomfortable due to persisting power imbalance(also constant feminisation of mc) that never really got resolved (also they didn’t rly have any other friends except for MAYBE the other transmigrated ppl but those were more like they were still employees), love interest was really unlikeable at times (super childish and jealous/possessive, would punish the mc by breaking his xiao and also by having painful sex with him??? wtf... also mc always forgave him WAY too easily.), some overall uncomfortable descriptions and casual sexism/racism/xenophobia especially in the us arc, it halfway thru and if i have to read about the mc saying “wu” one more time istg...., rly had to push myself to continue during the america arc especially around chapter 70-80 bc it was so frustrating....,

I still don’t know how that title correlates with the plot. or is Song Xiao just being coy there?

Retranslated by Chrysanthemum Garden, so no one can complain about bad translations or wad through the raws.

Arc 1 is just comedic flufffff: ml is a total yandere & Mc is just being willingly? towed along.

Arc 3 has more of the machinations, face slapping and Yu Lin (Mls brother) cuteness.

Arc 2 is probably were some people might get triggered.

the author probably didn’t do her research on other countries properly. There’s some bad and extreme stereotyping on other races in some scenes. Only thing I can say is, those parts don’t last long and aren’t a main focus. maybe the author was trying to depict the difference/similarities in societal values but it just didn’t translate well....atall.

Overall this is pure fiction. It’s a fantastical popcorn read: it can never happen in real life and it’s only for entertainment.

3.5 stars: For the ending and their dog’s karma: Hilarious!

Fluffy, fluffy novel, with some humor and 1 chapter of smut (the rest is just *fades to black*).

I read the sequel - I have amnesia, don't be noisy - first and I feel so satisfied after reading this. The sequel actually overlaps with this novel, timeline wise, but some details have been tweaked a little. So it's not interwoven that well.

Quite a fair bit of face-slapping and scheming. Pretty enjoyable read, though I would say I enjoy the sequel a little bit more.

I love this novel to death, it deserve a big ratings in novelupdates, I love the shameless emperor Yu Tang and our excellent empress Song Xiao, the funny side characters Dugu An, Yu Lin, Yu Miao, Cao Gonggong and the general.
I especially love the face slap here and there and how the emperor always acted like a child with the empress and the empress being obsess with money. I love them so much.
My most favorite part is the kidnapping case, in all of my life, this novel has the funniest kidnapping scene I ever read, and so much comedic parts that had me laughing out loud, help! This will novel definitely jump to one of my favorite reads I swear. I just love them so much, super duper love this world!

More like 3.5

This is a light, fast and fluffy read. They are a very cute couple, although the emperor can be very childish on several occasions, it wasn't that annoying or irritating (for me). The secondary characters are very so-so (tho I like the very last second CP), there are several unresolved questions and OP cheats on the main characters, but I repeat, this novel is like that, do not expect intelligent enemies, complex strategies, or dogblood, but lots and lots of dog food.
