A fated mates love story where the burn is slow, the family strong, the plot unexpected and the Alpha is truly unlike any other — he is human. Oh, and there's an ancient curse.
Blurb:
Dr. Thomas Pierce DVM, is a rural veterinarian living in New Mexico. Fact-driven, skeptical and passionate, he has made his career the focus of his life. He grew up in a loving family. Mom, Dad and four siblings.
His life was the epitome of ordinary, until strange wolf paw prints started appearing on his property.
One fateful night he made a discovery which would forever change his life, reveal his true identity and determine the fate of everyone he loves.
**** “What do you mean she is not a wolf! Of course she is! Look at her, she is a wolf.” “No Tommy, she is not a wolf: she is a WEREwolf.” I should have rebuked her. Contradicted her but I couldn’t. My mouth went dry, my knees were about to give out. Where was the damn chair when you needed it? This made absolutely no sense, and yet... “Werewolves don’t exist!” The words bitter in my mouth. “Yes, they do Tommy. Yes, they do. She is one. She is your mate. She came here to find you, she came here looking for you.”
MJ fell into writing by accident. As much as one can, anyhow. When the pandemic hit, she read a lot—some would say too much, but they’d be wrong—until one night she got a little push, and began to write. She doesn’t claim to know much, but she vows to continue learning. She loves words. She uses many.
MJ lives in Belgium, her home away from her first and second homes — Ecuador and Canada. She has two daughters, one husband, collects book ideas, sleeps too little and stresses too much.
I was put on the arc team for this book. No information was provided about length. It is a freaking beast of a book. It wouldn’t have bothered me, I like long books, but it felt like the meandering was used to purposefully lengthen it. A character would have something happen and someone would go to explain what was happening then in the explanation they would get distracted and it would turn into another story and then significantly later it would eventually come back to the point or someone would finally explain things in maybe a paragraph.
I started the book and made it to 54%, got very ill and had to take a break, had to switch to some other promised reads and just couldn’t bring myself back to it. It isn’t that anything is wrong with the characters or concept but the pace was draining.
I was given and ARC copy for my honest review Sadly just wasn’t for me.
I was bored for the first 50-60% of the book. I loved the idea of the story line but it wasn’t executed how I wouldv’e imagined it. I wasn’t taken in my any of the characters and was not invested in Tom and Mitts relationship. The fated mates love thing didn’t feel real to me and I really struggled with having to read ‘babe’ so many times with mitts Inner dialogue as it all just felt really juvenile.
The end of the book was more interesting and captured my attention more but it felt rushed after reading SO many pages of what felt like the same thing over and over and then brushed over the paranormal side of the storyline.
Likely would have DNF before halfway point if this wasn’t an ARC review.
I received an ARC of Mine By Choice from the author in exchange for an honest review.
Mine by Choice is the first novel of The Choices Series and MJ Espinosa unleashes you into a new world of werewolves and fated mates! She doesn’t hold back on the plot twists, the adventure, and the steam. Honey, gather round for cold showers!
I am a lover of shifter romances and she gives a fresh (and slightly taboo) take on the bond that these fated mates will share. It’s something that I truly enjoyed but also found that it wasn’t so deep in to taboo, where those that may still be dipping their toes in would still be able to enjoy; this can definitely be enjoyed by all romance lovers!
It delivered in all the areas the author said that it would; fated mates, love conquers all, plot twists, diverse characters, and an ancient curse. You meet Thomas, a rural veterinarian that loves his career and family but knows he is working towards a bigger goal. What he doesn’t expect is to meet his mate, that he doesn’t even know exists in the first place. She starts the beginning of a journey Thomas never could have seen coming, he’s strong but filled with a doubt that I think any sensible person would have.
I connected with Thomas because I feel he reacts naturally when he finds out that the life he’s been living was just the cusp of so much more. Mitena risks her life to find her one true mate but even she doesn’t expect the turns that this love is going to take her on. There is instant-love because of the fated mates aspect but there is also real world hesitation that I appreciated so much.
Mine by Choice is a VERY long book, where at times I felt as though there was a too much; however, I will say that nothing felt out of place. I do think there could have been maybe 200 less pages and it wouldn’t have lacked in any way. There are a few grammatical errors but it didn’t pull me out of the book or make it less enjoyable. There were also characters that I just didn’t know if I was ever going to like but by the end of the book, they nudged their way into my heart.
Again, this is a novel about fated mates and learning that in life you have to make choices that can only be decided by you, especially the hard ones. Thomas finds out that this has to be a life that he chooses, that’s it’s not being forced on him but that he simply can’t see his life any other way. I yelled, I screamed, I got teary eyed, but most of all I loved. I loved Mitena and Thomas’s love so much because they fought for it and once they overcame it the passion set you on fire! It was so beautiful right to the very end (where there is a bonus chapter that knocked me away).
The author did a beautiful job at expressing true love while taking you on an adventure of a lifetime, where there’s no way you could expect the turn up to the very last moment.
“That’s ENOUGH! You’ve had your pity party. Really outdid yourself. Banners, streamers, confetti, the whole nine yard.” This line had me laughing for a long time because it was such a vivid image of internal(ish) dialogue between the heroine and her wolf. This book tells the story of soulmate werewolves. One who is cursed and the other who has no idea that he is a werewolf. I am typically a realistic romance reader, but found myself drawn to this story after jumping into a few other science fiction/mythological stories. I was not disappointed! I was sucked in immediately by the ridiculous banter between the hero and his wolf. It made me laugh and really endeared Leo/Tom to me. It is a slow burn but worth the read!
I was super excited to start this book. A werewolf who doesn’t know he’s a werewolf? I was instantly intrigued. The book is a bit longer than I expected, but it completely kept me on my toes the entire ride with all the twists and turns. I laughed, I blushed, I cried, I felt all the things for these characters. I cannot wait for book 2!
ARC review! First, thank you for the opportunity for this ARC MJ!
I’ll be honest that I didn’t initially know what the term “fated mates” meant when applying for this ARC, so imagine my surprise as someone who avoids fantasy type books. Despite this not being my typical choice, I really liked the writing style and that was enough to pull me into the storyline.
This story is the definition of a slow burn but I really think it was necessary for the character development. The book was longer than my typical choices but it was fine because it was filled with multiple climaxes (literally and figuratively if you know what I mean). That being said I think I would have been happy had this book been split into two separate books. The second half of the book was filled with good spice that you’re craving after the long build up.
I loved all the characters and felt connected to all of them, and for that reason I’m excited to read the next book in the series!
I absolutely loved this story! It was so unique and yet it still had all the things I love from a typical werewolf story. The prologue had me hooked and was so heartbreaking!
I loved the duel pov and the internal dialogue between characters. Tom and Leo’s banter was a tie for favorite with Tristen and Christopher’s bromance. The family aspect of this was amazing. The bond between them was so pure. Mrs Rhys was wonderful. There is a slow burn but it’s done differently and was so good when it finally exploded. I loved watching these characters grow together and really get to know each other. Tom and Mitena were major couple goals. I have so much to say but I don’t want to ruin anything.
Having an alpha who has absolutely no idea about who he is was really cool. The backstory and world building was so detailed and complex but super easy to follow. I was impressed. I loved this world so much and I can’t wait for more.
-found family -slow burn -small town vibes -touch her and die -fated mates -curses
MJ, you have no right to mess with my emotions, respectfully. But also, I don't mind getting my feelings played (uhh yeah if that makes sense). You know it's hella amazing when a reader let herself getting drown in the story, and this is that kind of book that succeed in making me lost track of time when I was reading!
I really fancy the author's writing style. It was an easy and light reading, in addition to short chapters throughout the book. You've won my heart for that, MJ! Simple yet powerful in delivering Tom and Mitena's story. Definitely a page turner and worth your time reading. That's it: 5/5 stars! 🌟
This book starts with a prologue that had me wanting more immediately.
There is a curse that needs to be broken and Tom, our main character, has no idea he is an alpha.
MJ Espinosa's writing style is so enjoyable to read and I love how detailed the story is. It never seems overwhelming, which is a good thing with bigger stories. The banter is great. Chemistry between the main characters Tom and Mitena is intense and I ate it up. 🔥 The slow burn in this book is done so so well. 🥵
I have not read many werewolves stories but I love this one.
Also this took me 2 days to read because it's a big one. Time well spent
If one of these things sound interesting to you, definitely check it out. You'll end up wanting more just like me.
Wow. I’m a bit book drunk. I’ve read so many books that have a great storyline but is often spread out over 3 or more books and sometimes dragging. I can’t get over how much story was in this one book. I can’t wait to recommend it to all my book friends. It was exciting, it was full of emotion, I laughed out loud and I shed a few tears. It was fantastic to experience so much character growth from beginning to end. It never felt predictable, and I never felt the need to speed read to get to the next “good part”. They were all good. Nothing dragged, characters learned from their mistakes and missteps so there was no internal groaning at the characters. I truly am so looking forward to the next book in the series.
I enjoyed this story so much. I'm a sucker for fated mates and this sucked me in. Between the prologue that had me tearing up and the hilarious banter between the characters that had me laughing, I was on an emotional ride. I'm so excited for what the future holds and definitely will recommend.
*I was given an ARC in exchange for an honest review. I like the idea of this book - the main character not knowing his supernatural status until a chance encounter, his profession as a vet, however I found that his overwhelming angst at the massive shift in his life, whilst very understandable, became very tiring very quickly. I’m not sure I would have finished the book if I had not agreed to the ARC. That being said, once that part of the journey was over, I did enjoy the more paranormal parts of the story. I found the curse storyline very interesting. But that part of it felt very rushed and some of the nitty gritty breaking of the curse magical type stuff felt kind of glossed over. The books pacing felt like 70% angst at the beginning then a rushed cool storyline. The idea is super cool though and if you can handle, or enjoy, relationship miscommunications, frustrations and blow ups then you might really enjoy this. In the end the two main characters were really strong, dutiful and very much in love. They grew on me as time went on. I liked that they stepped up to their destinies and took charge. It seems as though the next book will focus on a possible new couple, one of the characters having been in this book, a la Suzanne Wright and I may just read it, because despite my initial misgivings this debut had some really good bones that encourage me to keep going with the series. It ended up reeling me in!
Mine By Choice was a full journey from start to finish. It is a thicc boi, 98 chapters thick, and I adored every second. It's a juicy, slow burn shifter standalone you can really sink your teeth into.
Insta-love/fated mates and slow burn are hard to combine, but I absolutely love the way it was done here. There was enough inner struggle and situational tensions to balance the slow burn without lessening the impact of fated mates. Its truly as slow as I feel these tropes can be written without having to turn to extra tropes, E.g. forced separation, as a support beam.
I loved the characters so very much. Tommy is so freaking sweet and considering everything that is thrown at him, he takes it the best he can. Leo is his complete opposite, an absolute asshole, but he makes me laugh. I do love him and their character arcs separate and together was perfectly done. I cried. Mitena/Reika are so lovable, I adore them.
The entire dynamic between them all was so good. The entire way M.J. writes the human/shifter souls living together was so well done, especially how the mate bond was addressed between all four of them. I absolutely loved it.
Sadly these wolf boys don't have knots, but the steam was still HOT 🔥 That kitchen table scene? TAKE ME NOW. 🥵
The side characters were wonderful and so well written. It was so hard not to love all of them. Especially Esperanza and Christopher. I ADORE CHRISTOPHER. I can't say more than that without spoiling everything, but I nearly highlighted everything he said. He's just too precious for this world. 😭
The story was fun and engaging. Every single time I thought I'd started putting the puzzle together, another piece would be revealed, and it was back to the drawing board. I can honestly say I was not expecting all the turns we would take, but I enjoyed the ride all the way to the end. Got me right in my feels. This is very much a love conquers all story (in ways, even *I* did not expect) and the journey, the fight, to get their HEA is so well deserved.
I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series!
I laughed! I cried like a baby! I could not get enough of this book! Following Tom’s journey to find family, true love and himself kept me locked in as soon as I started it. MJ Espinosa blew this one out of the water! It’s a bit longer than most books, but worth every single page. I cannot wait for the rest of this series to see what happens next!
This is my first ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ of the year and it is 1000% deserved! Now go read it!
I don’t usually read a whole lot of beautiful love stories like this. I had so many emotions while reading this book. Absolutely beautiful. I don’t want to say too much because I don’t want to give away any spoilers. I will say I loved Mrs Reyes so much! I can’t wait to read more by the author!!
I loved this story start to finish! I’m always up for a good werewolf shifter romance but this one had a great twist to the traditional fated mates tale. The characters were all very easy to fall in love with. There’s even an ancient curse that must be broken thrown in the mix!
The story is introduced by a prologue that will definitely grab your heart. It then picks up much later in time and is told through a dual POV between the hero/heroine. The MC/hero Tom has no idea in the beginning of his true self, which makes for a very interesting twist to the story. Another great aspect of the story are the delightful secondary characters-especially Tom’s brother Christopher. Everything slowly builds up throughout the book to an exciting climax. Unlike a lot of stories where things move around in time and location, this one is not hard to keep up with.
I was given an ARC of this book to read by the author in exchange for an honest review. Honestly, this book was a great read that hooked me from the prologue and kept me on the edge of my seat throughout. I would highly recommend it to others!
I was lucky enough to receive an ARC. Thanks for allowing me to be a part of that MJ Espinosa!
Mine By Choice follows some familiar tropes:
Fate Mates Werewolf Shifters Ancient Curse Romance
BUT…it also has unexpected twists and turns!
Overall, I really enjoyed this book! It is a lengthy novel and for me it didn't pick up until about half way through it. With that being said, it had so many elements in the story that it did keep me interested.
Thank you for including the English translation when using Spanish. This is the first time I've seen that done. It saved me a ton of time trying to translate what I didn't know.
I loved Mitena and Thomas and their inner monologues with their wolves. But Leo and Christopher ended up being front and center for me and were my favorite characters.
This is a romance and has some spice. To me it's mid level spice but I'm also a reader of smut. That table scene though!! 🤤 🔥 💦
Where can i start with this? I fell head over heels with this story and the people, it delivers everything that it promises. Was no struugle with getting into plot / story, im a major sucker for fated mates and Mine By Choice was spot on. Has humour which i find is great within the plot , romance "chef kissess* not a short book but lets face it who like reading thin books? I like them very chunky it has plenty going on. I was finding myself with not getting confussed with what was happening it flowed great. Well written besides a few grammer errors which tbh made no issues what so ever and kinda didnt want to point that out as i truly love this and will be adding it to my favs!! Now im left with a book Hangover , dont just think oh ill add it to my tbr, get ur head straight in there dont wait.. Enjoy!!.
First off, I want to say that I am so thankful that I was part of the ARC team! I enjoyed every minute of this book! Second, this author writes SO well! Even in the “boring” parts I was hooked because the writing here is so honest which made the characters so easy to relate to. I was dying to know what was going to happen the entire time. Beautiful love story along with a great interpretation of werewolves! I will be looking out for more by this author!
I absolutely enjoyed the suspence and mystery in this book, topped off by the hot and spicy encounters!
If you are into hot, spicy read with werewolves, then this is the perfect book for you!
I enjoyed reading Tom's story where he finds out who he really is and the curse him and Mitena have to break.. It has got suspence and a lot of mystery too...
I recommend this book 100%! It is page turner and just amazing!
MJ Espinosa creates a tale of epic proportions that had me feeling all the feels. I cannot wait for the next book in the series. In total pages it’s a long one but you don’t notice as the story moves so quickly and I was devouring the pages. Highly recommend!
I enjoyed this soooooo much it was new and refreshing!! It took a minute to get into (my fault not authors) but once I was into it I was going going gone I loved reading a shifter book with the different ethnic background and it was great that the author put what the characters said in another language as English right at the end of what was said! I need the next book like.... yesterday!!
Oh where to begin! This was a fantastic book! It had mystery and intrigue and the characters were brilliant! I loved the fact is was mostly in the male perspective with different povs throughout. I laughed, cried, was shocked. Everything I love in a book plus more! Seriously take the time to read it!
Emotional adventure. Well written story, with likable characters rich and interesting plot, plenty of emotion and turmoil. Long read but absolutely worth it,wonderful and gripping. Highly recommend to anyone. One of those books, which pulls you in and won't let go until last page. Well do to the author. Arc copy review .
I was lucky enough to be chosen to get an ARC. I haven't read about this trope in a long time, I couldn't find anyone who could get it right. The author did an amazing job with it. If you love a slow burn and werewolves 💜 this is the book for you! Can't wait to continue the series!
ARC REVIEW: Enjoyed this book so much. Very interesting perspective on mates & alphas. First time reading a shifter romance & I am hooked. I am so impressed with this story line, can’t recommend enough.
***ARC REVIEW*** This is a great book that pulls at your heart strings. You're gonna laugh, cry, and fall in love with this story and the characters. I love the world that MJ has created and didn't want to leave when the book finished. New werewolf comfort read? Very possibly!
This was a fun story and a new take on werewolves. It is a long read, but it doesn't feel long. It is a page turner with great relationships and vivid imagery. Worth the time it takes to read it.
