Before Forever

Rate this book
I didn’t come to Silver Point to find love. But it seems determined to find me anyway.

I came to Silver Point for two reasons: to escape the love that broke my heart, and settle my mother’s final affairs. The lake house that she left me is a welcome distraction—but Derek Mullins, the construction worker in charge of the team working on the renovations, is exactly the kind of distraction I don’t need.

He’s sexy, optimistic, and full of charm—not the kind of man who falls for a girl like me.
I’m overworked, full of regret, and lonely, with walls higher than the ones surrounding me in this dusty old house. But I’m also more vulnerable than I’ve ever been before, and when love takes us both by surprise, I don’t know if I’ll be strong enough to keep them from crashing down.

I thought I was done with love. But Silver Point is full of surprises—and Derek is one I hadn’t counted on.

If I’m not mistaken, this is the first book by Harper Sky and I’m most impressed if so. There wasn’t anything about it I didn’t like but I think there were some holes that should have been filled. That would up my grade.

What we do know. Melody has a high powered job in New York City. Thins seemed to be going well but a couple of things have happened lately that have rocked her world. First off her boyfriend of a number of years, someone she was hoping to marry has broken things off and is now dating a supermodel. But much worse, Melody has recently lost her mother. We don’t know why; if it was sudden or if it was illness. I felt this is important information that should have been shared. But Melody is devastated and not handling it well. Another important piece of missing information is there is no mention whatsoever of either a husband or a father. I found this very strange. Melody discovers her mother has left her a small house or cottage in a small town in Tennessee. She thinks her mother bought the house so they could set down roots. Melody doesn’t know much about it except it needs some major repairs.

So Melody heads to Tennessee to straighten things out. She hopes to get things started and head back to New York, but that’s not in the cards. Derek, our hero and the contractor needs her to stay around for about a month. Melody doesn’t want to do this. She is racked with guilt at never having joined her mother in the small town and is struggling. But Derek proves to be a fine distraction.

Derek is a great great distraction. His wife died a few years previously, again what and where isn’t mentioned, information again that should have been included. He is raising their daughter as a single father. He has a younger brother who helps ans it’s mentioned in almost a throwaway sentence that his mother has died but we don’t know about Derek’s father. The author for some strange reason doesn’t seem to think we would be interested in parents. She would be wrong. I’d like to know.

Another thing I found missing and to be honest took me out of the story is once the relationship between Melody and Derek progresses to a physical level, there is not a paragraph, not a sentence, not even a thought given to either birth control or previous partners. It is noted that there hasn’t been anyone for Derek since his wife died, but Melody was in a long term relationship until the guy cheated on her so for me this warranted some discussion.

But overall, as I said, this was a pretty decent book and if it’s available on KU, there is one coming about about Derek’s brother Keith, I’d like to read. Ms. Shy has a few kinks to work out but she shoes much promise.

DNF @ 28%

Honestly I wanted to like this so bad, and it was a good plot but I could not get past chapter 11 due to the lack of proof reading. The ex boyfriend’s name kept changing from Evan to Ethan every other sentence! It’s not like those could be nicknames for each other either, they are clearly two different names.

I’m obviously very picky considering no one else had this problem and there is not a single 1 star review, and I feel bad for this but it’s something I couldn’t get past. Then again almost all the previous reviews were ARC’s so maybe they got a different copy than what’s available on KU?

DNF wanna know what annoys me...when the author switches the exs name halfway through the book and expects no one to notice...is it Evan or Ethan make up your mind🙄 Wouldn't matter so much if he wasn't brought up the whole book either

This book is so sweet! It is an easy, straightforward love story that sucked me in from the beginning.

The small town setting is gorgeous and quirky without being over the top. I loved that both Melody and Derek went on a journey through their separate grief. While I was worried that Melody would end up being irritating and whingey, but the author toed the line nicely and let her grow.

My only criticism was that there were a couple of continuity errors (unless school on Saturday is a thing in the South?). While it was predictable at times, it was also heartwarming and food for the soul.

This is a very cute and simple love story! Derek is the small town single dad who you can't help but love. Melody is the city girl whose life just doesn't seem to be going great. When they meet it is instant chemistry, although neither of them want to admit it. Melody is just trying to move on from her cheating ex and deal with the death of her mother. Derek is just trying to do right by his daughter and get the job done. Neither of them counted on catching feelings. This is a perfect book if you are looking for a simple happily ever after with not a lot of drawn out drama or angst. I do wish the timeline and events weren't so sporadic and jumpy, felt very hurried and rushed in parts. There was a lot to be left desired as far as character development, everyone was very predictable.

Okay, I did enjoy this although some parts felt very rushed and honestly some of the spicy scenes were sort of unnecessary and irrelevant (didn’t think I’d ever say that). If there is a second book with Derek’s brother then I would probably read it!

The multiple holding of truths and over reactions was a little too much for me. I’m not big into reading miscommunication if it happens so often in the plot. Also I remember reading how Derek said it would take up until Christmas for renovations to finish and then towards the end it seemed like it was still fall when everything was finished. The timeline was a little confusing there.

A cute storyline and backdrop, but oh the cheese 🧀 there wasn’t an eloquence to the writing and a lot of it was predictable or cringey. Various spelling and grammatical errors throughout also.

Things I liked about this book:
- how protective Derek the MMC is of the people he loves.
- how supportive his brother is of him.
- the change and growth you see in Melody the FMC
- that there are two main love stories it’s centered on. One between Derek and Melody and the other between Melody and her late mother.
- how you see that grief can still hurt someone years later.

Over all it was a good book with a good story. While I did not have any “wow” factors jump out at me to remain memorable I in no way hated it. The love story was sweet and fairly realistic. I do feel that some parts felt rushed or like the development didn’t feel natural for them. I do feel like there were a few scenes that maybe didn’t flow with the main plot and wasn’t entirely sure they were needed. I did find an issue or two with some of the reactions the characters had in certain situations. They felt a tad juvenile and out of place with the character it was coming from.

It definitely falls in the middle for me as far as rating it goes but I can see a lot of people enjoying it quite a bit.

I don’t know how this book even got published. There was so many spelling and grammar mistakes, the name of the ex bf kept changing from Evan to Ethan, and the timeline errors were annoying.

Even if any of that wasn’t a factor the book was still bad. Melody was annoying and rude and Derek (and his brother) were judgmental and rude too. Derek is hung up on his dead ex wife (a trope I hate) and melody is hung up on her cheating ex. What made the author think that was a great storyline to use??

Don’t waste your time on this book.

There really was much to like about this story. Two people struggle through heavy grief, trying to navigate their attraction to each other, and figure out what to do next. I guess that's a little bit of a contemporary romance template. But the writing, although choppy and telling in some places, was good and made the story more believable.

Things I didn't like: the comparisons between "big city" and "small town" life. This came across more than heavy-handed. All the small town people were delightful, friendly, and invested in each other and their community. The city people were consumed by their fast-paced careers and designer clothes, expensive food, and a cold, hateful city. The inference was also quite clear that the city people were smarter and more sophisticated than the small town people. These are lazy, stereotyped tropes that are seriously not true or even close to realistic. I've lived in many small towns, as have most readers. I'm sure you'd find we could refute every templated "small town" point the author shared. Same for the "big city" stuff. I wish authors would stop using New York City like it's the fricking center of the universe. If you've ever picked up a newspaper or read a online article, you know NYC is filled with mostly poor/working class people struggling like hell against a handful of uber rich guys who appear to own everything. Big city life can be isolated and terribly lonely. Small town life can be equally lonely, but with the added fishbowl effect of proximity as well as judgment and very long memories for even small life mistakes. I'm just saying that a story with more realism might be a good move. Writing something, even a first-time book, with more realism, would have made this a richer story.

Another reviewer mentioned lots of holes and missing parts of this story, including things like the female and male leads parents. For me, it's not that they're missing as much as the stereotyped early death of parents. This is a trope that's always freaked me out. It seems leads in romances often have lost their parents even though those people couldn't be in their 60s! It's the same thing with many romance ces that are geared towards more mature readers (me) where the lead is a widow/widower at age 50! Today, people rarely die that young, whether they're parents or spouses. Most people I know have parents still living in their 80s and beyond. I know a small handful of people who lost their partners in their 60s, yet romance is entirely populated by adults with dead parents and widows in their late 40s, early 50s. It's just another example of an unrealistic ancillary point. Things like this when handled well make for a much richer, real story.

I did feel the sex scenes were great, and that's a real accomplishment for a first-time author. They felt real, very hot, and relatable.

Overall, the plot is a sweet one that could have been better.

Harper Sky is a new author to me but I did find this book enjoyable.

This was supposed to be the year that Evan proposed to Melody, they had been together six years, Melody was happy, she had a man she loved, a job she loved in a city that she loved until it all went pear shaped, Evan had cheated on her, her mother had died, Geoffrey was chomping at the bit to steal her job and to top it all, her mother had left her a lakeside cottage in the middle of nowhere that was to be a restoration project.

Melody left New York and headed for Silver Point Tennessee, the sooner she could get this cottage renovated and sold the quicker she could get back to the city and get on with her life.

Derek Mullins was a widower and part time firefighter, he and his brother Keith ran a construction company, Derek had been hired to renovate the cottage belonging to old Mrs Hart, the cottage across the lake from his own.

This story follows the immediate attraction between Melody and Derek, Derek's wife had died three years earlier, all the town were matchmaking for him but he had never been interested, no one could replace Rebecca……… until Melody Hart but Melody would go back to the city when the cottage was finished and he would never leave Silver Point. Melody didn't fit into Silver Point, everyone knew and looked out for everyone else, she knew no one and her designer clothes were out of place, how soon could she get this restoration finished and forget about the hunky part time firefighter who had taken over her dreams, the same firefighter who was keeping a secret from her.

Before Forever by Harper Sky is a wonderful story of how two people navigate grief. Melody Hart has just lost her mother and her fiancé has left her, so she retreats to the small town of Silver Falls to renovate her mother's lake house before getting back to her "normal life." There she meets contractor Derek Mullins, a single-dad who is still reeling from the loss of his wife three years earlier. The reader gets to see how both characters deal with their grief while witnessing the relationship between them evolve.

This is a very emotional story. Sky's writing wonderfully illustrates how each of these characters deal with their respective grief. While dealing with their grief, both Melody and Derek make some missteps in their relationship, but what was so wonderful was how willing they were to listen to one another. Both characters are very relatable and empathetic and you really feel what they feel and grieve along with them in a way. There are some moments of levity, but overall this book is about how two people come together while processing the loss of a loved one or relationship.

This book is very immersive and you get invested in Melody's story immediately because she is so well written and so real that you really care about what happens to her. I highly recommend this book to anyone, but especially readers of women's fiction, general fiction, and romance.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

What a perfect little book.

Looking at previous comments about the name change, that has been amended in the Kindle version.

Harper is a big city girl moving to a rural small town after her ex boyfriend cheated on her with a client she promotes as a model and her mother passes away suddenly. Her mother leaves her a lake house in her will and despite protests, her boss insists she leaves to take care of selling the house.
As soon as she gets to town she bumps into Derek, quite literally bumps into him and that’s the start of a fierce romance to come.

This book has everything, romance, suspense, anger, heartbreak, confusion and love, only to name a few.

I loved that Melody had such a wonderful motherly instinct towards Emily and my only wish is that we could have seen more of this develop in the book.

I couldn’t really fault it. Loved it. Would re read it again

Melody Hart came to Silver Point heartbroken after her mother died and her long time boyfriend cheated on her. Then she met widower and single dad Derek Mullins, when he began fixing her inherited lake house and inadvertently fixing both of their grieving hearts.

I thought the story started out slowly but I think the author didn't want the characters to open their hearts too fast. The grief Melody had in losing her mom and Derek had in losing his wife was profound. Insta-love wouldn't do the story justice. The story picked up once Derek and Melody began falling for each other.

I really like this author. I didn't realize this was her first book. I hope there are more books set in Silver Point. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This book is just the sweetest book. Derek runs a business with his brothers. His wife passed away and Derek has not been ready to move on till he meets Melody. Melody has just dumped her cheating boyfriend and lost her mother. After her mothers death she learns that she has inherited the lake house. Mind set on going to sale it she goes and hires Derek and his brother to do the repairs on the house. Dealing with the loss and regret could hold her back from finding the love of her life. For Derek holding onto his grief of losing his wife could cost him love as well. This story is so sweet and loving. The characters are amazing together.

I am leaving my honest and volutary review for a Copy I recieved.

Both Derek and Melody sort of have their heads in the sand, just existing, going through the motions, needing a shake up. Derek is still mourning his wife and Melody is mourning her mother. Neither of them were looking at their lives to see if they were really happy or satisfied or if trying something new would give them a fuller, better life. I liked that Melody felt as if her mom was still guiding her. I understand that Derek couldn’t just “get over” his grief on other peoples’ time schedule, but he was deliberately cutting himself off from a fuller life. I enjoyed the progress of Melody and Derek opening each other up to taking a chance in love and the future.

For this being the author first book it was really good. Melody and Derek are just existing in the world and going through the motions; they both need a wake-up call. Still mourning his wife Derek motivation is his daughter and getting through the day. Melody has a lot on her plate right now finding out about her cheating fiancé and the death of her mother; she dealing with the loss and regret’s. It’s months later and Melody is losing her grip on everything and has inherited her mother’s lake house. Melody mind is made to sell the lake house and hires Derek and his brother to assist with getting the house up to par. Tension is high between them and steamy nights can they find way to be happy. I loved this!!

It was kinda boring.
I was on a 9hr flight and it still couldn’t hold my attention well. So I put it aside for a few weeks and read a couple of other things before picking it back up a day ago.
I skimmed a tiny bit (because still boring), but managed to get through.
Melody finally comes to her senses about her job, NY, and her ex. Derek was super cautious, which I get but then suddenly threw it all to the wind upon Melody and Emily first meeting, inviting Melody to sleep over the same night. Like wow, he was so hesitant to even tell Melody about Emily then suddenly it was like first meeting, well sleepovers make sense. No caution needed.
And the epilogue was just disappointing. It was sweet but I expected more closure to their story.

This is an okay read, I liked the premise of the book but I found that I felt that the timelines gave me problems with inconsistences, timing wise. Melody came from New York to small town quite a change, not only is environment different she's dealing with the death of her mother, lots of regrets there along with breaking up with her cheating boyfriend, her life's in upheaval. Her mother's lake house needs work which means construction workers, Derek is no slouch in the looks area, being in a relationship is not what Melody excepted because she's there only temporary, but attraction is strong. Small town living, change of life drama makes this an okay read.

This was a super sweet book.

Melody is a PR I'm New York and her long-time boyfriend cheated on her with a model from her agency.

After her mom dies, she has to travel to this little town where her mother bought a lakehouse to get it renovated and ready to sell.

Derek is a firefighter and the head guy for working on her house. Widowed with a small child, he is reluctant to let anyone in.

Tensions rise, steamy nights happen, angst unfolds and Melodys ex comes to try and win her back.

This book ends with an HEA.

This book made me smile, laugh, and cry a little. Spice was good and some FTB scenes.

Melody and Derek are a fabulous pairing. Both are in the depths of grief. Derek lost his wife and Melody just lost her mother. They are brought together when Melody inherits her mother’s lake house and Derek happens to be the contractor hired to prepare it for sale. It’s busy city girl meets easygoing small town hottie. Okay, he’s more than just a hottie. He’s a volunteer fireman, town staple, and a dad of a precious daughter who will melt your heart. Such a heartwarming story with wonderful characters, and a feel good, happily ever after forever ending.

3.75 - 4 stars.

This is a new author for me and the first book in this series; the story is full of pain, sorrow, grief, anger, loss, family, friends, secrets, assumptions, shared experiences, connection and chemistry. There were times when I wanted to shake both Melody and Derek and there were times I wanted to hug them. I wasn't so sold on some assumptions that were made and how some things played out, but I was happy they got there in the end. Small Town Romances are one of my favorites and this did not disappoint! Steamy scenes were not super spicy but steamy enough!

I loved the transition of Melody and Derek’s relationship throughout the story - and their personal growth as well, especially Melody’s. She becomes her own woman throughout the book that finds herself and reconnects with her mom emotionally on a spiritual level.

DEREK AND MELODY FIND HARMONY

I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

I liked this story because it shows that no matter how much diversity and heartache a person goes through, there is always a light at the end of the tunnel. There were a lot of misconceptions between the characters until they talked to someone with a level head or figured out what was most important in their lives. Well written through both characters’ points of view.

She is struggling with regrets and grief, he is struggling with moving on past grief. Can they help each other heal?

This book was definitely about two people helping to overcome their grief. I didn't blame him for being hesitant as he had his daughter to think about, but loved when he took that final step and took the chance to open his heart again. I loved seeing her bloom while she was healing and watching her realize there was more than the fast paced city life and work. Good read!
