Louis Marie-Anne Couperus (June 10, 1863 – July 16, 1923) was a Dutch novelist and poet of the late 19th and early 20th century. He is usually considered one of the foremost figures in Dutch literature.

Dit is voor mij een onverwachte parel uit de Nederlandse literatuur. De kroonprins van een fictief land heeft twijfels over zijn toekomstige rol als keizer. Ook kijkt hij moeilijk aan tegen zijn gearrangeerde huwelijk
Maar heeft hij wel keuzes? Mooi geschreven door Louis Couperus.

Het taalgebruik van Couperus was even wennen voor mij, maar als je daar doorheen bent, is het boek vlot te lezen. De verhaallijnen zijn eenvoudig, doch wel boeiend. Wat mij er aan boeide, was de blik die je gegund wordt in het denken van die tijd over staatskunde, maar ook over persoonlijke relaties en, natuurlijk, de Nederlandse taal van die tijd (1893).
