Akira Toriyama (鳥山明) was a Japanese manga artist and character designer. He first achieved mainstream recognition for creating the popular manga series Dr. Slump, before going on to create Dragon Ball (his most famous work) and acting as a character designer for several popular video games such as the Dragon Quest series, Chrono Trigger, and Blue Dragon. Toriyama came to be regarded as one of the most important authors in the history of manga with his works highly influential and popular, particularly Dragon Ball, which many manga artists cite as a source of inspiration. He earned the 1981 Shogakukan Manga Award for best shōnen/shōjo manga with Dr. Slump, and it went on to sell over 35 million copies in Japan. It was adapted into a successful anime series, with a second anime created in 1997, 13 years after the manga ended. His next series, Dragon Ball, would become one of the most popular and successful manga in the world. Having sold 260 million copies worldwide, it is one of the best-selling manga series of all time and is considered a key work in increasing manga circulation to its peak in the mid-1980s and mid-1990s. Overseas, Dragon Ball's anime adaptations have been more successful than the manga and are credited with boosting anime's popularity in the Western world. In 2019, Toriyama was decorated a Chevalier of the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres for his contributions to the arts. In October 2024, Toriyama was inducted into the Harvey Awards Hall of Fame.
EN The clash between Gas, Granolah, Son Goku, and Vegeta escalates, with Gas proving clearly superior to the other three.
The intervention of the Namekian from planet Cereal becomes essential, bringing forth flashbacks to the past, when Bardock — Son Goku’s father — fought against Gas. These events reveal secrets about the Saiyan race that even Vegeta had long forgotten.
Despite a somewhat shaky start, this saga is turning out to be very compelling.

I’m a bit torn with this one, on one side of the coin I couldn’t be more stoked or happier to have Goku get some motivation and essentially understanding and value from his father after such a long time but taking over just about half of the entire volume just felt like a bit too much. That being said afterwards that super ego and hyped ultra instinct and going all out on gas was just an epic fight and having Gas bring huge items flying like literal entire trains was just so well drawn and enticing I’m definitely stoked to see the arc hopefully culminate to a final of this story in the next volume.
I am still annoyed that the fight is being prolonged for so long, but I am happy to see some actual strategy in the book as well. I like Goku's "trick," and the message from the past and the past fight were great touches. There is also lots of action to keep my interest as well. I do like a bit of brains added to the mix as well as grit and willpower.
A volume dedicated to Granolah, Goku, and Vegeta trying to take down Gas, as well as a quick detour to look at Bardock's battle against Gas countless years ago. There's very little originality left in this story arc and very little of what's shown, even though it's mostly battle-centric, is unimpressive. The core message from the flashback sequence was also lackluster yet somehow gives Akira Toriyama a reason to heal up our heroes for another round against Gas... I can't wait for this Survivor Saga to come to an end...
Another Volume of fighting Gas... Highlights: - Granolah finally loses to Gas - Goku steps in and uses Instant Transmission to warp them both to a bunch of planets, knowing that when he is far enough away, he can just warp back and it will take Gas a while to come back. - During the 20 mins it will take Gas to fly back to the planet, Monaito gives Goku a gift, Bardock's scouter, which contains audio of his final fight against Gas. - Goku learns the power of Saiyan Pride, and Vegeta (who was listening as well) learns how pride can be a burden. - Gas comes back and Goku goes Ultra Instinct and Vegeta goes Ultra Ego. They deal some damage, but the fight will continue next time.
I hope this stuff with Gas doesn't go on much longer. We've been in "fight mode" a long time and not so much about the secondary characters or funny stuff. Time will tell... Recommend.
I think this might be my favorite volume of the arc. I loved the action between Goku and Vegeta against Gas. The backstory stuff was legit crazy like wow there’s a lot to unpack from Bardock’s fight with Gas. The fight is heating up and you can tell shit is about to go NUTS!!!! The one panel with Vegeta and Goku at their strongest forms…… peak!
9/10 after gas gets full control of his rage and Goku and Vegeta are at wits end. Granolah decides to make his move and try to kill Elec (The heeters leader) but it backfires after gas saves him by using teleportation. And then breaking Granolah’s arm and shooting 2 beams out his fingers into Granolah’s eyes. After this, elec tells Granolah’s he will die just like his mother and shoots him in the back with his weird syringe gun.
Vegeta gives Goku the reminder of his energy and Goku begins to attack Gas again, but gas is throwing all sorts of structures and moves at him. Gas attempts to drown Goku and calls him pathetic for suffocating. Goku while floating in a stream of water drowning puts his hand out and shoots and one hand kamehameha and gas caught all the ki and threw it back at Goku.
Gas realizes Monaito is a healer and has to take him out first, as he shoots towards him, Goku grabs him and uses instant transmission to transport them both to where ever Jaco was. Goku believes no one could ever be as good as him with instant transmission, so he makes gas chase him. Planet to planet goku jumps to locations of people he knows, mostly galactic patrol locations and one was Manako (“strongest fighter in their universe” from the first tournament in super). He then takes him to the galactic patrol prison where a bunch of prisoners make fun of gas for peeing himself in the past for being scared of them.
Vegeta realizes Goku is just buying them time. Goku starts to question gas if he does everything his older brother asks of him. Gas basically says he owes elec for everything he is today. Then he warps them to a planet with whis and then teleports through multiple planets and back to planet cereal but whis was too far for direct instant transmission so gas has to directly fly through space to get back. This buys them time, and they all go back to Monaito’s house after Granolah’s eye band turns into an actual robot and drives them to safety. Also, whis planted and communication device on Goku and they discuss if Goku has mastered Ultra Instict. Goku claims he can’t prefect it. Whis tells him he needs to find who he truly is. Monaito reveals he still has Bardock’s scouter and the robot says he can repair it for they can watch his final recording before he lost the scouter. Goku for the first time sees his parents telling Monaito and Granolah to run to safety while they fend off gas. Goku seeing this is entranced, maybe he is finding out who he truly is and this will help him perfect ultra instinct.
They continue to watch the fight between Gas and Bardock, Bardock keeps trying to tell Monaito to take Granolah and run. Gas reveals the Saiyans won’t be living too much longer anyways but keeps it subtle. Gas uses his “inner nature” and gains more power and keeps fighting Bardock. Monaito summons his dragon and wishes Bardock to be sent back home but Bardock refuses so the wish doesn’t work. Bardock wishes for his son to thrive in the future instead. He watches as gas takes out Monaito but doesn’t kill him. This activates an aura around Bardock and he begins to fight back stronger and tell gas the meaning to why he fights. He sees an enemy and he wants to take them down, simple as that. There is an aura that surrounds Bardock while he fights now. Could this be ultra instinct ? Bardock finishes Gas with a huge double Ki blast. Elec picks up Gas and tells them they need to double down on training, he reveals to Bardock that he has no idea what Freiza is planning and to not be surprised if a meteor is on top of his head one day. Then shoots him with his gun Device but misses and hits him in the arm. Monaito finds Bardock , still alive and once Bardock was on his feet he left the planet.
Goku and Vegeta reminisce on what saiyan pride truly is and the way Bardock retaught them through his memories. Monaito heals them a bit and gives them saiyan outfits. Shortly after Gas returns. Goku and Vegeta turn ultra ego and ultra instinct at the same time and tell Gas they are fighting to win now. They put on a good offense against Gas and the fight goes crazy, but seems pretty even. They try to finish Gas off with a destroyer move but it doesn’t work as planned but gas goes to attack Vegeta but he doesn’t know that in ego, all pain turns into power.

This arc goes back and forth between being "pretty good" and "kinda weak." Basically, the issue in this volume is that Toyotarou isn't a great artist but it's a battle-heavy series of chapters, so his lack of skill stands out. It's especially upsetting how shitty his paneling is when he's meant to be the successor to Toriyama, who was fucking great at paneling.
I don't remember if I said last volume, but I kind of like Gas's ability to summon weapons and things. I've often thought Piccolo should have weaponized his ability to summon clothing out of nowhere, and this ability is kind of the same, if less "original."
Son Goku finally references Raditz, so I guess people still remember he existed.
I guess Burdock does some kind of Lord Slug movie pseudo-Super-Saiyajin power-up?
I've known a bit about this volume since its chapters were new, and I remember people complaining that Burdock's wish drags Dragon Ball down to the level of Naruto and recent One Piece with lucky destiny bullshit, but I'm pretty sure the idea was just to make sure child Raditz and infant Kakarotto would be off-world during Freeza's destruction of Planet Vegeta. Otherwise Raditz would be alive and mastering Ultra Instinct right now....

I've really come around on this volume. I initially rated it Three Stars when I read the chapters on MangaPlus, but I'm bumping it up to Five after re-reading it physically. I'm warming up to Gas as an antagonist, Ultra Ego as a new form for Vegeta, and the whole Bardock flashback part. I still don't consider it canon, though....
There's some unnecessary roughness with the way Gas and Elec team up on Granolah.
I guess it makes sense that Goku and Vegeta still have toothpaste on SSB sometimes. When their stamina is low, they can't use the Completed SSB as easily.
I wish there was a more visually distinct means of telling when Goku has UI stacked on SSG/SSB.
The Instantaneous Movement game of tag is pretty fun.
Gas having peed himself as a child is funny.

That was such bullshit. Dragon Ball is and can be more than this. The reveal to the build up was boring and dry. Also, Bardock's wish was vague and dumb. Feels disingenuous and only written to create a debate of its significance and wording. Within the same volume you can also see how amazing Dragon Ball can be with the way Goku uses Instant Transmission. The strategy and out smarting the opponent the way only Goku can. All that only makes it far more frustrating to me. This volume defines the major issue with Dragon Ball Super and mordern day Dragon Ball in general. Smh. Worst Volume of the series, there I said it!
This was such an insane volume, I really loved it, we get Goku vs Gas and their teleportation thing was wild and it was tough to follow but it was so cool seeing the cameos of the different planets and alien races introduced in the series overall especially the prison one and then the big moment when Goku hears his fathers voice/recording that was left and he and Vegeta are both there, and they learn of the SAIYANS PRIDE and omg that last moment where they power up ULTRA INSTINCT and ULTRA EGO, it was so cool and its just amazing seeing how the fight goes and I played the UI theme song while reading the battle and it was just freaking epic!! OMG I LOVE THIS VOLUME!!
This is a very good and surprisingly creative volume! In this, Goku and Vegeta learn about the past and in how to deal with the errors of the Sayans in the past.
The fight this volume was mostly padding, but it was fun and creative padding! Goku using his powers in creative ways is always the best parts of Dragon Ball.
The volume focused on how Goku's father Bardock contains the key to defeat Gas. How could a lower powered warrior defeat someone Goku and Vegeta are currently struggling to defeat? The answer is surprising but at the same time makes sense. From there the volume is filled with incredible heart pounding action and keeps the reader glued to the pages.
I liked the flashbacks with Bardock, even if they do feel out of character (but I guess he’s a good character to expand on as we’ve only seen him once or twice throughout the franchise). I like the effect hearing him had on Goku & Vegeta, recontextualizing the concept of ‘Saiyan pride’. The fight IS getting long winded now and really needs to wrap the hell up.
Woah, I thought we were done with Bardock at this point but I'm glad we weren't. Excellent action with twists and turns that keep you on your toes as a reader. The use of the environment by Gas was a nice change of pace from the usual slugfest and ki blasting we normally see. My favorite scene was most likely seeing Goku and Vegeta powering up together.

Action-packed, dedicated to Goku, Vegeta and Granolah fighting against Gas. Plus a little more Bardock content (my favorite part of the volume) and Goku remembering bits and pieces of his past upon hearing his father’s voice.
In this volume, more is unveiled about Bardock and his time on planet Cereal. Will history help defeat the present... Find out on the next episode of DRAGONBALL SUPER!!
such good action and interesting story twists and turns
This was fun. I did enjoy this speed and I really feel like the author really push themselves to go above and beyond to make this battle and story interesting. I was really interested in the background about Goku’s dad.
