Emily Dresden was a normal high schooler. Popular, fun, a good student, a kind-hearted person who was looking forward to the future. So, no one can quite figure out why she tried to kill herself last September. Including Emily.

Now back at school after a long recovery, she's cut herself off from her old friends, including her best friend, Daniel, who's determined to help Emily get back to normal. But Emily doesn't think that she can ever be normal again. Not because she doesn't want to be, but because she's convinced that there's something evil inside her, warping her mind and endangering those closest to her.

A Little Slice
By Scott R.S. Raphael

At first blush you might dismiss this book as one more story about teenage self-harm and suicide. If you do, and I recommend you don’t, you will miss out on a roller coaster ride of psychological emotions that will reach deep into your own soul.

Scott is a masterful story teller who will take you into the mind and emotions of his main characters. At times, it felt like he was reading my mind.

This is not a book you read quickly, you will want to savor each paragraph. The detail is precise and chilling. The story flows like blood, but don’t gloss over the parts that might be a little squeamish, and all too real.

I rate this book a 5 out of 5 stars. Captivating, Horrific and Masterful!

“A Little Slice” is not a little novel! In contrast to the slick and speedy “Spruce Road” (the author’s first foray into the horror genre) “A Little Slice” unfolds in layers of psychological intrigue and character realization. The parallel plights of Emily and Elias are deftly interwoven amongst the emergence of villains and monsters – some human, some not - leaving us rapidly turning the pages in search of solutions and some promise of relief for our protagonists.

“From the waterfall of light in the distant hall, the monster came in grey.” So the story begins.

It gets darker from there. Raphael’s ability to paint scenes of horrific gore is often stomach turning. He had me wincing and saying “oh, no!” out loud, more than once! At the same time, his ability to craft sympathetic characters through realistic dialogue and poetic flair is what makes the story most chilling. These are real people dealing with real forces and there is no guarantee that the good guys are going to come out victorious in the end.

Of course, there are lighter moments too, in small doses, as the author’s wry sense of humour can’t help but poke through to relieve some of the tension. But never for long! At its heart, “A Little Slice” is a horror novel and, make no mistake, there is evil attempting to escape. This is a story to be read with the doors locked…..unless whatever “it” is, is already inside with you! Enjoy….I did!

Highly recommended!
