Years. Broken into months into weeks into days—into hours, minutes, seconds—into moments. Simple at one end, complex at the other. In Draco’s experience, moments, even when simple, had a habit of becoming irretrievable. Moments grew, stretched, multiplied into ages and eras that defined whole stretches of measurable time. Draco regretted several moments in his life, some within his control, some without: all of them irretrievable in nature. At a certain point, wedged between ‘what-ifs’ of his own devising, he’d stopped trying to keep track of those regrettable moments: now and then, pushing and pulling, coming and going, beginning and end. Moments were only moments for just as long. After that, he had no control.

[In which Draco is forced to work with Hermione, falls in love, makes many mistakes, and eventually becomes his own man. A Draco POV prequel to Wait and Hope.]

✅ Hate to friendship to love
✅ Sweet and heartwarming
✅ Forced proximity
✅ Hermione being friends with the Slytherins
✅ Pace
✅ Some smut
✅ Some angst
✅(🆗) Plot (simple, but cute)

This is a prequel to Wait and Hope, but should be read after the first book. It shows what happens between Draco and Hermione during the six years she forgot.

After his year spent in Sarajevo to get his potion mastery, Draco is back to the family’s manor, hoping for a new life where he can enjoy more freedom. He quickly realizes that his parents have not changed a bit and are already trying to force him into an arranged marriage. Even though he desperately wants to show his parents he is happier when free from the pureblood beliefs, he is forced to return to the role of the obedient son, and is tasked by his father to oversee the ministry official responsible for clearing the Malfoy manor of any dark magic remaining.

This book is told from Draco’s point of view. We knew about the main stepping stones in the development of his relationship with Hermione, but this long prequel allowed us to fully enjoy how they went from being old enemies to reluctant friends, to lovers. It also gives us more information and context about certain elements that were central to the plot and romance in the first book, but never fully explained, such as the infamous couch, Draco’s relationship with Hermione’s parents, his lack of relationship with his parents, or Hermione’s new wardrobe.

That being said, it would also have been nice to have some chapters or parts written from Hermione's point of view to give us more insight into her thoughts. Especially since there were some miscommunication issues between her and Draco, and I couldn't always understand the reasoning behind her words, fears, or actions.

It started strong and I flew through the first half of this book, but then it dragged on a little in the second half. Overall, I enjoyed this prequel to Wait and Hope, but I was not the biggest fan of the time-turner plotline.

While Hermione and Draco dislike each other at first, this is more a friends-to-lovers than a hate-to-love romance. Hermione and Draco are forced to spend a lot of time together, crammed in the manor, and after a while, they find themselves forced to talk to each other and eventually address their past trauma and grievances. This friendship they develop ensures a strong base to their romance, and makes it a cute, heartwarming, and healthy relationship that I really enjoyed.

There is a good chemistry and sexual tension between Draco and Hermione. They are both brilliant and keep on challenging each other in the best way. There is more smut in this book than in the first one, but it did not overshadow the plot or the development of the romance. The spicy moments get spicier as the story progresses, but while it is somewhat explicit, it is not nearly the most explicit Fanfic or book I’ve read.

Draco is so sweet in this fiction. He is scarred by his short time at Azkaban and his years on house arrest, and he truly tries to be a better person. He still tries to hide his emotions, and uses Occlumency as a default protection mechanism as soon as he starts to feel too many emotions, but he does not revert to his acidic insults and sarcasm to push people away when things get more difficult, and I enjoyed this maturity.

This book is for you if… Wait and Hope didn't quite give you what you craved

Overall.
Although I am currently in a reading slump (sorry if you're tired of reading this, but it's been bothering meeee) and am by no means in a good place to review anything, I'm here to tell you that I was pretty pleased with this book. Didn't kick me off my socks or anything, but it's definitely better than Wait and Hope, for sure.

I love this phase of light banter between Draco and Hermione in all fics and missed that a bit in Wait and Hope. I also liked that we experienced this part of Dramione's story from Dracos point of view.

The MPV of this series is definitely Theo, he's a total sweetheart. Mightbewriting is so creative in their dialogues, they made me laugh so many times.
‘Knowing you, he probably stashed it in your hair for safekeeping and now no one can find it,’ He said instead and it only looked like an insult if he squinted.’

‘Hermione, someone lied to you. You told me you had a cat. This is an experimental transfiguration project gone wrong.’

‘He arched a brow but did not move. He had no intention of ceding the ground he’d gained with Crookshanks unless he absolutely had to. ‘We need to talk.’ Ground ceded.’

What’s happening.
‘If I had a million of choices, millions of chances, I’d pick you every time. I count myself wildly lucky that you’ve picked me even once.’

spoiler alert : Prepare for your heart to be close to bursting.

4 STARS. Would stay up beyond my typical hours to finish it. I found some minor details I didn't like, agree with or lacked in some kind but overall, this was enjoyable and extraordinary.

3.5 ⭐ Started strong but then I got bored

Word Count: 242,000 | Chapters: 48

"If I had millions of choices, millions of chances, I'd pick you every time. I count myself wildly lucky that you've picked me even once."

Summary:

This is Draco's POV prequel to Wait and Hope .

After spending a year apprenticing in Europe for his potion mastery, Draco returns home a new man and hopes his parents have changed as well. Unfortunately, Lucius and Narcissa hold firm to pureblood ideologies and expect Draco to fulfill his obligations as the Malfoy heir, including marrying a suitable woman from a respectable family. All Draco wants to do is take control of his life. However, old habits die hard, and he finds himself reverting to being the obedient son.

Part of Draco's new responsibilities is to oversee a ministry official tasked with purging Malfoy Manor of any dark magic/artifacts. And of all people, Hermione Granger shows up. At first, Draco keeps his distance out of guilt for his past, but it's impossible to stay away since they work in close proximity to one another. The more time they spend together, the more Draco starts to respect and admires Hermione, and in return, she recognizes how much he has changed. As their friendship grows, so does their attraction, but what sort of future could the heir to a pureblood family have with a brilliant muggle-born witch?

*Slow-burn, sexual tension, angst, fluff, time-turner (small element to the story)

My Thoughts:

What I liked . . .

We get way more context for things that were brought up in Wait and Hope. For example, the importance of the green couch, the backstory on how Hermione's scars disappear, why Draco loves children, Hermione's evolving wardrobe, and Draco's cell phone. All relatively important topics from the sequel, yet the relevance was never explained in detail.

The friends-to-lovers Dramione relationship. I absolutely loved the build-up to their friendship! Since they spend so much time together at Malfoy Manor, Draco and Hermione are forced to address their past traumas and share these personal moments with each other. Their willingness to open up to one another solidifies their friendship and gives them a strong foundation for a romantic partnership. I'm a fan of healthy Dramione relationships, and this fanfic definitely doesn't disappoint. Are they perfect? No. Draco and Hermione constantly miscommunicate and have their own set of issues, but in the end, they work through them and want what's best for the other person.

Draco is a sweetheart. This story takes place after the Battle of Hogwarts, where Draco has spent a few months in Azkaban, two years under house arrest, and one year abroad. He is not the same arrogant, misguided kid from the canon HP series. Draco is mature, thoughtful, charming, doting, caring, and playful - possibly the perfect boyfriend. He would literally do anything for Hermione, including giving up his inheritance. And a man willing to do that . . . Well, some may say that's crazy, but in the fictional world, that means he loves her. Also, how Draco spent all that time making the cursed scar removal potion for Hermione. 🥺 My heart can't handle it.

Seeing Draco grow as a character. Draco has completely changed his ideas about muggle-borns and, overall, become a nicer human towards friends and strangers. However, he still struggles to break free from his family's expectations as the Malfoy heir, which carries certain pure-blood ideologies. I love seeing Draco's journey from the submissive, obedient son to an independent young man. And while Hermione was one of the reasons for this change, ultimately, Draco did it for himself to escape a manipulative and toxic environment.

The sexual tension was perfect. What do you get when you put two beautiful, intelligent, and cunning individuals together in a single space for a long period of time? Chemistry. Lots and lots of it! Their relationship is slow burn, so the sexual tension buildup is excellent.

Sex scenes were definitely 18+ but not extremely graphic. At first, the sex scenes were less descriptive and tended to gloss over the acts. These scenes were good. But I think they could have/should have been spicier. They got more mature/graphic as the story goes along, but nothing that made my lady bits tingle (if you know what I mean, lol). Random, but the story does have an "I only get on my knees for you" scene, and that's always a treat. 😏

What I didn't like . . .

I wish some moments were written in Hermione's POV. This would have been extremely helpful to the story's development when they were having their fights/breakups. I felt like I never could quite understand Hermione's reasoning for some of the big decisions she makes.

Repetitive writing. About halfway through the story, I started to notice Draco's internal dialogue was getting extremely repetitive. This occurred a lot when Draco would describe Hermione's physical traits and the issues concerning his parents. The writing was still good, but there should have been some cuts.

The last half of the story was slow. This probably has something to do with the repetitive wording/inner dialogue. But unfortunately, it made the story feel drawn out. About halfway through, I started losing interest and eventually skimmed the non-dialogue portions.

The unnecessary angst. Hermione and Draco 'breakup' twice due to them failing at communication. From the beginning, Draco was honest about how he felt for Hermione, but she seemed to always be completely unaware of where she stood with him. However, that could be because this is in Draco's POV so his intentions are obvious. But again, this is why I wish some of the chapters were in Hermione's POV. The first few times these misunderstandings happened, I got over it. But, it still happened towards the end, which frustrated me. It feels like these characters were written to act dumb to create drama and propel the story forward. IMO, it comes across as lazy writing.

The Time-Turner stuff was interesting but unnecessary. When Theo and Draco used it at the beginning of the story, I thought it would be a major plot point. But it wasn't. Even when it comes up near the end, I just didn't see the purpose to it at all. Interesting concept to throw in there, but not needed.

Overall, I really wish I could give this fanfiction a higher rating because the first 25 chapters were amazing, 5-stars! But, it got repetitive and angsty for no reason for the last half of the story. I ended up taking so many breaks while reading because I got bored. 🙈 So, I'm sorry, but I got to stick with my 3.5-star rating.

HOWEVER, it's still a sweet, happier Dramione fanfic that should definitely be read if you enjoy Wait and Hope!

Ohhh what a lovely story that was to read. Soft Draco is my new favorite, and I am obsessed! This is the prequel to Wait and Hope, which ripped my heart out a little bit. This one did too, but there was lots more to put it back together. This is the story of how Draco and Hermione fell in love, battled the world, fell apart, and then put each other back together again. And it was beautiful. The verdant way Draco loved Hermione and cherished her and venerated her…man, that was really special to read. This book was so well written, but to offer one teeny criticism…was way too long. Wayyyy too long and tortured me just a bit in between all the loveliness. Still, what a wonderful read it was!

4.5 ⭐️

The EMOTIONAL DAMAGE that this inflicts…please buckle up for heart break over and over again before we get happiness for these trauma babies. (You know…before the next trauma they go through 😭)

Beginning and End (prequel to Wait and Hope, though it should be read second) follows Draco’s POV.

We love a simp Draco, and this is top tier. Beautiful writing. Excellent spice. This story makes Wait and Hope even more heart wrenching (did I know that was possible? No. No I did not.)

What kept it from being 5 stars for me was just personal preference of character traits. Hermione pissed me off SO MUCH with her stupid ass refusing to let herself be happy and dead set on self sabotage (there is rage in my body as I recall to write this review). That and I’m partial to fics with Narcissa being more redeemable. 🤷🏼‍♀️

An excellent companion to Wait and Hope. The perfect balance of relationship and the magical world/setting. Definitely not just a trifling romance but a masterful bit of artistry set in a very very very believable wizarding world. Dramione is the one true pairing. I can not be convinced for anyone else to come close.

Tw: bl**d, curses, hate speech, slurs

This was cute. I was shocked at first that it was not in Hermione’s POV but I see what was happening with the whole memory loss thing and how it was in Draco’s POV. I wanted both of theirs but this was good too.
Draco in this was adorable and honestly it was cute to watch him struggle to be in love with her when we know how it ends. It was adorable watching him try so hard to pretend he didn’t love her as much as he did.

What made me sad was you know that this Draco is the type of man who will likely refer to Hermione as his wife every chance he gets and when we think of book 1 it hurts even more.

the prequel fic to wait & hope!
i loved this one so much — it was so tender and felt so realistic, and the slow burn was glorious. also loved hermione’s friendships with the slytherins, but what i was truly impressed with was draco’s character development. it was so well done and the writing was BEAUTIFUL. i adored all the nods and parallels to wait & hope, and i think this is definitely worth reading if you enjoyed wait & hope!

Theo smiled, youthful and mischievous. For a moment, Draco didn’t feel like a twenty-one year old wizard on the other side of a war, financially bound to an estate and a family failing to modernize, and saddled with a fiancé with whom conversation floundered and died like rotted fish.

Instead, he felt a bit like an idiot. It was wonderful.

He offered her his arm, an instinct from a different version of himself who didn’t have to consider what it might look like for Hermione Granger to walk arm in arm with Draco Malfoy.

And strangely, unbelievably, inexplicably: she took it.

When, exactly, had Granger gotten pretty? He’d noticed before that she’d changed since school, but he hadn’t connected those changes to the face in front of him: open and warm and glowing from the candlelight at the center of their table. Flickers of light danced across her freckles, illuminating them not unlike the stars in the sky. He wanted to reach out and trace every path between them: draw constellations on her skin.

Oh, he was so very fucked.

And how, at some point, he stopped having to pretend. And it had been a marvelous feeling.

*Gods* he wanted to belong, to something, to someone, to fucking anything.

It was hardly as if he could open with *I ended my betrothal because I realized I couldn’t keep doing what everyone else told me to do. But I also ended it, in very large part, because I can’t stop thinking about how you’ve practically moved into my home, into my head, into the space inside my chest I might tentatively call my fucking heart.*

And even though she wasn’t even looking at him, certainly wasn’t touching him, he could *feel* her observation. He could feel her fingertips, grazing book spines or his own, it felt the same. Reading the titles felt like reading him, knowing him. He could feel the prick and tingle of scrutiny shooting a thrill through him: a surge from being seen. These were his books. Not the manor’s. Mostly potions texts, a few on herbology, an odd novel or two. Hardly a complex collection, but things he’d chosen to bring with him when he moved and that felt like it mattered.

“I think if anyone deserves to move on, fully move on, from—all that. It’s got to be Hermione Granger, doesn’t it?”

“I was planning on going by myself,” she said. “But—if you’re available. I was wondering. I could use a date for Harry’s wedding—”

“Yes.”

He’d go to Harry Potter’s wedding ten times over if it meant going with her.

Her rejection hurt him so much because he was in love with Hermione Granger.

*In love with her.*

He’d never been in love before.

It hurt more than he expected. There was more fear involved, too. But also, a level of certainty, of calm that came with accepting it.

“Do you remember when you said you could be friends enough for the both of us until I figured myself out?” He’d softened: shoulders, voice, soul. She responded to it, tension unwinding, death grip on her lower lip loosening.

She nodded, evidently too trapped in her own head to speak.

“I suppose I could be in love enough for the both of us until you figure yourself out.”

They stood there, in the quiet, until Theo came, stumbling and drunk, to find them. It broke the silent understanding they’d formed.

She’d waited for him.

He could wait for her.

He’d said there was no girl. The easiest, boldest lie of his life. His lie greeted him as he stepped back into his bedroom, still curled beneath his covers, a book propped open in her hands, and a wide smile offered freely upon his return. Of course there was a girl. A woman. The girl. *The* woman.

“You will not insult your family by spending time on a holiday with some harlot we’ve never met.”

Anger careened down Draco’s spine. He shoved his hands in his pockets, hiding the way they shook. He took a deep breath—in through his nose, out through his mouth—and dug himself a grave, right there in the sitting room.

“Oh, you’ve met her.”

Hermione *would* be a permanent part of his life.

He wouldn’t let his father win this time, not again, not now.

“I never wanted you to have to give them up for me.”

Propped up on his elbows, still feeling a little unsteady, he said, “I’m giving them up with or without you. I’d much rather do it with you.”

The word wife hit Draco square in the chest. His diaphragm seized, breath halted for the several seconds it took to reconcile that such a word had not been spoken in jest. But rather, it represented a very real, very likely future state in his life.

He could feel her breathing, tight and forced, expanding and contracting her ribs against his. “I don’t know why I’m so nervous.” She said it in barely a whisper, low and slow, words melting from her mouth like candle wax.

“Of course you know.”

She laughed. “Saturdays aren’t your day anymore, you know.”

“Do I?”

“Of course you do. They’re all yours now.”

This was a hozier song. Absolutely perfect.

4.25 ⭐️ Okay, OBJECTIVELY this was probably too long - but do I care? Nope. It was so sweet and I loved literally the entire thing. Such good storytelling and writing, that I don't even mind that there was basically no plot other than a slow burn romance. I really wish there had been more of an adventure element with the time turner - that probably could have taken it up to a 5 for me!

"Would you risk it, Theo? Everything that's ever really mattered to you? To fix a mistake? To give yourself the opportunity to do things the way they should have happened years ago?"

He could feel it. In a single kiss, the promise of a lifetime. And it was all worth it. Every last drop of pain and torture and uncertainty that brought him to that point. He'd do it all again, he'd spend those months miserable if it meant he ended up right back here, with her lips pressed to his, powered by the promise of forever.

“I'd pick you every time. I count myself wildly lucky that you've picked me even once."

Love could literally make magic; what a marvelous and unexpected thing.

———

Wow. This fic blew me away. It made Wait and Hope all that more heartbreaking and wonderful. Excellent companion and prequel to Wait and Hope (B&E to be read second!) and the slow burn story of how Draco and Hermione fell in love and chose each other. Ultimately I’d say this fic is about choices. The right and the privilege to chose. How to live. Who to love. It’s also about the tiny moments that make life what it is. I loved the chapter titles and the elements of time and destiny. Sort of a Sliding Doors/time turner/what if theme. Top notch Theo! Also I’m now on the search for a green velvet couch. ;)

———

In these blinking moments where she stopped thinking and merely existed, she surrendered so much of herself. He knew, even if she hadn't said it yet, that his devotion was not one-sided. He knew that this overwhelming thing he'd decided to call love, this thing that scraped and clawed at the inside of his chest, this thing that fought so hard for proximity to her, did so because it knew her as well as it knew itself.

Theo clapped Draco on the back. "Congratulations. Looks like you've gotten a happy ending, after all."
Hermione's smile grew, leaning back from their kiss. "I think it's more of a beginning," she said.
A beginning.

Draco had so much time ahead of him. Time with her. To live a life he could be proud of. He meant what he'd said. If he had a million lives, a million choices, a million chances. He'd pick her every time. And they had so much of that. Years and years and years.

Years. Broken into months into weeks into days-into hours, minutes, seconds-into moments.
Simple at one end, complex at the other. In Draco's experience, moments, even when simple, had a habit of becoming irretrievable. Moments grew, stretched, multiplied into ages and eras that defined whole stretches of measurable time. Draco regretted several moments in his life, some within his control, some without: all of them irretrievable in nature. At a certain point, wedged between 'what-ifs' of his own devising, he'd stopped trying to keep track of those regrettable moments: now and then, pushing and pulling, coming and going, beginning and end. Moments were only moments for just as long. After that, he had no control.
Instead, he let himself live.

There’s so much about this fic that I loved, just moments that were a pure joy to read and felt so real and well written.

The core of the story is great, the slow build up of their relationship and them actually (surprisingly) fitting in with each other’s friends. I loved their parties with Harry and Ginny (and the other Gryffindors) who are actually cheeky and interesting here, not just cardboard “good” characters. The Slytherins were, as expected, pure gold. I honestly wanted more of this though- these scenes were cleverly written with moments that were laugh out loud funny or just really charming to read. ALSO- very happy to actually find out the significance of the green sofa here. (Is the green sofa the true hero of this series?)

HOWEVER- these golden nuggets of joy are stuck in-between a slew of dinners with the Malfoy’s that were just a sludge to read. Also the time-turner plot line took far too long and took away some agency from Hermione that annoyed me. Would’ve much rather seen them have to face their big looming problems head on and figure it out together.

It’s more of a 3.5 for me—- still I really enjoyed so much of it I would still recommend it if you want a fun, pretty spicy dramione full of heart and a lot of angst.

A master wordsmith, the writer had me completely engrossed in this tale of the life-changing and life-damning importance of purposefully making decisions and accepting the consequences. I’ve never read a work quite like this, one that explores the gray areas between wishes and the hooks that hold one back. It’s given me plenty of food for thought; almost a catalyst… to end and begin.

The way the story was woven from Draco’s perspective, his force to free himself of his past, and his drive to do so alone, with or without the push of redemption from the past that’s haunted him, is what makes this tale utterly unique. The fact that a lovely redemption and relationship develops as a purposeful choice in this tale makes it all the better.

I really enjoyed the writing in this. It was beautiful!

I highly recommend reading this after wait and hope. I would even call it a duology. The story is not complete without this part. I loved seeing all of the moments mentioned in Wait and Hope.

This really is a satisfying conclusion to the story and is one of my top Dramione fics. Great writing, plot, character development (could have used more for side characters but this isn’t about them), world building, and themes.

The audiobook by ETL Echo on Spotify really brought this story to life and I enjoyed all the more because of it! If you get the chance, take a listen.

Truly a beautiful story and I guess I might be still one of the few who believe that it's actually better than wait and hope?
Although I am also torn on this one. It's not a classic slow burn. But it feels like it. The author took a lot of time to develop this relationship and I must say somehow it made me still very sad. Like there was always this really grey cloud over it. But I guess that is their story right? It not always a happy ever after for everyone, sometimes it comes with pain and sacrifice. I still loved it tho.

Enjoyed it very much, hoping that Hermione gets her memories back 😭 but I just wasn’t a fan of all the time turner stuff
