“A fascinating story of modern greed, betrayal, and revenge. The apparent murder of a housemaid in a ritzy part of Los Angeles sets LAPD Detective Joel Jovanic onto the dangerous trail of ecoterrorists, while on the other side of the globe in London, his lover, Claudia Rose finds herself threatened. In a short time, both situations coalesce, and Jovanic and Rose, a forensic handwriting expert, join forces. The stakes rise to an exciting ending that reveals a long-standing injustice—and a twist no reader will see coming. Enormously entertaining, this terrific mystery is one you’ll want to linger with.” —Gayle Lynds, New York Times Bestselling Author of “The Assassins”
What should have been a routine afternoon on the witness stand for Forensic Handwriting Expert Claudia Rose turns into a shocking assault that leaves her bruised and bloodied. Following on the heels of a series of other traumatic events, the attack sends Claudia to the brink of a breakdown.
Her fiancé, L.A.P.D. Homicide Detective Joel Jovanic, learns of the attack while leading a homicide investigation into a mailbox bomb. An innocent housekeeper in the tony Venice neighborhood is dead and the homeowner is the CEO of a major pesticide-producing corporation that has been targeted in the past. When a notebook found in a geocache near the crime scene leads to the protest group People for Safe Food, Jovanic needs Claudia to identify the handwriting of a suspected eco-terrorist.
Though she may have recovered physically from the assault, weeks later Claudia’s fears continue to plague her. Desperate to get away, she accepts an invitation to lecture in the UK, but her trip turns into a nightmare when she runs afoul of both the FBI and New Scotland Yard. Jovanic’s homicide case has followed her to London where she finds herself unexpectedly allied with the chief suspect.
“An expert witness makes for expert storytelling in “Outside the Lines.” ” —Simon Wood, Author of “The One That Got Away”
"Publishers Weekly gave Poison Pen a starred review and called it ""a dynamite debut.""
Award-winning author Sheila Lowe's stories of psychological suspense put ordinary people into extraordinary circumstances. Jefferey Deaver, No. 1 International Bestselling Author, said this: Utterly compelling! Outside the Line joins the ranks of those rare thriller that expertly blend nonstop plotting with keen perceptions of the characters--good and bad--who populate this wonderful tale.""
Like her fictional character Claudia Rose in the award-winning Forensic Handwriting series, Sheila is a real-life forensic handwriting expert who testifies in court cases. She also writes the Beyond the Veil paranormal suspense series and nonfiction books about handwriting and personality.
Outside the Lines is book 6 in the Forensic Handwriting Mystery series. I haven't read the earlier books but was able to read book 6 without confusion. I was intrigued enough with this book that I plan to read books 1 - 5 as soon as possible.
The author, Sheila Lowe, is a certified forensic handwriting analyst, as is her main character Claudia. The other main character, Joel, is Claudia's fiancé and a homicide detective. Her analysis often helps him solve cases but she sometimes oversteps her role and ends up in troubling situations. I really enjoyed reading about the relationship between these two characters plus they were not always perfect and had faults and arguments despite being deeply in love.
As a reader, I also learned a lot about handwriting analysis. The author gives information as part of the story but not to the point of being boring. I found her explanations of the analysis very interesting.
This was a very enjoyable book and I plan to read the earlier books in the series in the not too distant future.
Thanks to the Author for a copy of this book for a fair and honest review.
Wowwww! What an amazing read! This novel sets the reader on an emotional roller coaster ride that you do not want to get off! My two favorite characters, Claudia Rose and Joel Jovanic, had their hands full in this whodunit.
An innocent housemaid going about her daily duties could not have foreseen what she was about to experience. As she went outside to gather the mail for her employers, while they were away on vacation, she noticed something odd inside the mailbox. As any inquisitive mind would want to know why there appeared to be toilet paper stuffed inside. Reaching to remove the paper, the next thing this housemaid recalls is a loud explosion. What was going off? Why was she lying on the lawn? Unfortunately for her, that’s the last waking thought she would ever have.
Enters LAPD Homicide Detective Joel Jovanic. He was briefed on the murder of this housemaid who laid out before him. Was this some type of prank gone horribly wrong by some over-anxious teenagers? Detective Jovanic had no idea, but one thing was for certain—he wasn’t going to rest until he found out who murdered this woman. While Joel was busying himself with this fresh murder, his fiancé, Claudia Rose, the forensics handwriting expert, was in court testifying on behalf of the state’s evidence against a thug who had murdered a police officer. She was lending her expertise to the court on a handwriting sample of the accused. What should have been an ordinary court proceeding ended up leaving Claudia in a battered and bruised mess by the defendant. He wasn’t going to have this woman implicate him and send him away for the rest of his life, and he literally attacked Claudia in the most brutal way a human being can be assaulted. Luckily she made it out of the situation with her life, but mentally the attack softened her approach on how she viewed testifying in court and humans in general. Both of these events caused the two love birds to question their own relationship and cause major mayhem for them both. Would these horrific events destroy what they’ve built up for so many years? You’ll have to read to find out.
Lowe is an amazing writer. She paints a colorful world of words. Claudia and Joel are such rich and bold characters who have very interesting careers. I first met them in Inkslinger’s Ball, which was an outstanding read as well. I have never read a series quite like this one. This story was such a page turner; I was sorry when it ended. When you read characters this real, you truly forget they are fictional. I feel like I know Claudia and Joel personally, and I suppose I do, since their personalities were created with such finesse.
If you haven’t read the Forensics Handwriting Series, I urge you to get them and start. They work as standalones, so you’ll feel comfortable reading them out of order. Lowe’s writing puts you front and center in the story. You will soak up the words and quickly keep moving forward to find out what happens next. Her chapters are short, sweet and definitely to the point. And boy, what a point she’s made. Outstanding read! I could not get enough. I can’t wait for the next book in the series!
The Sexy Nerd gives Outside the Lines five stars inside and outside the lines and as many lines you can draw! The novel is on sale wherever books are sold. Please make sure you get yourself a copy, or download immediately. This is not one of those books to keep on your to-read shelf. Start now! Great read! I’m a huge Sheila Lowe fan!
This was my first book by Sheila Lowe but it won't be my last. I really enjoyed her style of writing. The story is well written and the characters nicely developed. There's mystery, suspense, action, adventure and romance. I love the strength of her main characters and the fact that neither one were wafflers or perfect. This was a highly entertaining read that I will recommend to my friends.
I received this book in exchange for an honest review.
Sheila Lowe has done it again! I loved Outside the Lines. I appreciate how each story is different and isn't just a rewrite of one another. There are a lot of things to learn in each book, such as geocaching, that I've never heard of but that are incredibly interesting. I will most definitely be reading the next in the series!
I received this audiobook from the author/publisher/narrator in exchange for an honest review.
The thing I love the most about suspense thrillers is what I can learn from the author. This well researched story had me riveted to my seat! Claudia is an expert witness for forensic handwriting and after a prominent case is badly beaten. From this, the fear of more retaliation is real and Claudia goes to her friend Daphne's to heal, leaving her fiance Joel behind. He is a cop and is investigating a mailbox bombing. With so much going on, Claudia finds her skills in demand and she is busier than ever. Will she find her confidence again or is the fear warranted? This tale of mystery, intrigue and international crime leads us to all kinds of suspects. The writing is impeccable and kept me fascinated. I loved learning about handwriting and what an expert can derive from a loop or a slant. It's incredible to know so much is stored in a line of handwritten text! I would definitely recommend this and look forward to going back in the series.
Anna Crowe does an amazing job narrating this story. It's my first listen by her and I love her voice! She is just as mysterious and entertaining as the story, giving each character their own personality and made the listen intriguing.
( Format : Audiobook ) "A tangled web, and all that." Whilst appearing as an expert witness for the prosecution, Claudia is badly beaten up and almost strangled when the accused manages to leap free during a contrived incident in the court. Bruised and terrified, she finds her confidence gone during her convalesence, afraid to leave her home. To get far away from the streets where she fears further retribution from the attacker's gang of friends, she accepts the offer of an all expenses paid trip to London as the headline speaker at a conference being held there by girlfriend, Daphne, leaving her police officer fiancee behind to continue the investigation into the death of the maid in one of the more affluent areas of L.A. But London holds it's own dangers and Claudia finds her skills as an handwriting expert in demand from more than just the conference as the case in L.A. seems to intertwine with others in England. Once again, she finds herself reluctantly drawn into possible danger.
Sheila Lowe has, with Outside the Lines, written another intriguing thriller of corruption, murder and double dealing, this time with international implications. As a Brit, the time Claudia spends in London, and later in Cambridge, are especially enjoyable as the author conjures up the atmosphere of both the place and the people well. The handwriting analysis passages are also fascinating, causing this reader to want to know much more. The book is performed with skill by Anna Crowe, whose very pleasant voice delivers the text with expression, good pacing and excellent intonation. Her voicing of the individual characters is also distinct, and, although her Irish accent certainly needs refinement, her narration overall adds to the enjoyment of the book.
My thanks to the rights holder of Outside the Lines, who, at my request, freely gifted me a complimentary copy, via Audiobook Boom. Another good stand alone story in the forensic handwriting series.
Outside the Lines is the third book that I have read by Sheila Lowe. And this is the second one that I have read featuring Forensic Handwriting Expert Claudia Rose and her Homicide Detective Boyfriend Joel Jovanich. I was not disappointed by the action and suspense that always seems to occur when this couple is involved.
In Outside the Lines a housekeeper dies when she goes to the mailbox and it blows up in her face. The investigation ends up pointing in the direction of an Eco-Terrorist group looking to expose a company called Agrichem that manufactures pesticides. At the same time, Claudia gets attacked while testifying in court on a different matter. Of course, Claudia ends up assisting Jovanich on his case while she is licking her wounds. For as much as I like Claudia, she can't help but get herself too involved in the most dangerous of cases. The fact that she doesn't seem to learn from her mistakes, drives me crazy and sometimes takes away from the realism of the book. I do appreciate the fact that the mystery was challenging to figure out and the culprits weren't obvious.
Sheila Lowe has written another great suspense novel. She also weaves in enough details regarding Claudia and Jovanich for the reader to be interested in their future together which helps to keep them relatable. Otherwise, I would surely get tired of yelling at Claudia and some of her bad decision making.
**Received a copy from the author in exchange for an honest unbiased review.**
Much as I've enjoyed Sue Grafton's Alphabet Series, this was so much better! Forensic handwriting analysis is a fascinating subject and Lowe's background in the field makes her protagonist, Claudia Rose, all the more compelling. I especially enjoyed the insights provided into how handwriting analysts work and the details of handwriting that provide clues to the writer's personality.
The mystery plot was fast-paced and exciting, reading almost like a true crime case. Unlike other writers, Lowe doesn't need to resort to impossible car chases or gruesome details to ratchet up tension. Rooted in the contemporary world, her plots have plenty of intrinsic excitement.
Nor does she need Claudia Rose to dither about her relationship with LAPD detective Jovanich to keep readers turning the pages. The couple seem like a believable pair that anyone can identify with. They have a strong bond, but, like most couples, have their share of arguments and disagreements. Claudia Rose feels a slight attraction to a key suspect and Jovanich can't help feeling flattered when a hot female scientist flirts with him--the sort of thing anyone can experience without it threatening their relationship.
Lowe's writing drew me in right from the start, and the story still lingers in my mind. I'm looking forward to my next fiction break when I can sit down with another one of her novels. This is a really addictive series. And best of all, you don't have to read the books in order to enjoy them. I felt absolutely at home with the characters.
What a fabulous book! I took my time reading it because I wanted to savor the writing and knew the author had not yet published the next one in the series. I have thoroughly enjoyed the entire series of forensic handwriting analysis mysteries. Claudia Rose is a professional handwriting analyst who is engaged to Joel Jovanic a homicide detective in Los Angeles. Together they have teamed up to solve a number of unusual cases as their relationship has evolved. Unlike earlier books in the series n this installment Joel's point of view is as prominent as Claudia's. While Joel is investigating the murder of a housekeeper in Los Angeles Claudia is in London as keynote speaker at a handwriting analysis conference. They learn that a wave of ecoterrorist bombings in London are tied to Joel's case when Claudia is approached by the leader of the group to prove the handwriting on a note found in London did not match his. She is intrigued by his story in part because an old professional rival has stated they do match. There is an exciting mystery with many possible murder suspects and a somewhat surprising but satisfying ending. As with the prior books, I learned a great deal about handwriting analysis and its application to solving crimes. Although each book in the series can be enjoyed as a stand-alone mystery, I recommend reading them in order to fully appreciate the development of the relationship between the wonderful main characters.
WRITTEN OFF is the sixth book in the Forensic Handwriting series. For some reason the audiobooks are being released in the opposite order of the books, starting with seven and working our way backwards. Since they each stand on their own, this is not a problem (except for her relationship with Joel Jovanic being run backwards).
Reading about Claudia’s world makes me wish I too were a handwriting expert. What would I need to add to my education? How do you gain the notoriety needed to be accepted as a witness in court? Would I be good at it? So many questions! I love the bits I learn as I read these stories.
Now back to the story… Edge of the seat, outstanding, amazing, superb…. Am I making myself clear? If you love suspense mystery, this is a story and a series for you. The writing is crisp, the characters are warm, and the mystery is unique and suspenseful.
Narration: Again, Anna Crowe is an amazing narrator. She does a superb job of bringing all of the characters to life.
Note: while I was given this book as a gifted audiobook copy via Audiobookboom, my opinions are my own and are given freely.
Title: OUTSIDE THE LINES Series: Forensic Handwriting #6 Category /Genre: Suspense Recommended for: 18+ due to sexual content Listenability: OK for most ears Received from: Sheila Lowe (as an Audible gifted copy)
Outside the Lines is the 6th book in the Forensic Handwriting Mysteries but it definitely stands alone. There are references to incidents in the earlier books but nothing that makes a difference in this story line.
Forensic Handwriting Expert Claudia Rose can easily analyze a person by their handwriting. She sees what people work hard to hide. With this skill she's become a valuable part of her fiancé Joel's success as a homicide detective.
In this case, an incident that starts out as a harmless scare tactic by a group of people protesting a pesticide corporation, turns deadly when someone is accidentally killed. Now the leader of the group is on the run and asking Claudia for help. As the lead suspect he's being chased down by Joel who warns Claudia away from him but she can't help getting involved. Now tension strains Claudia and Joel's relationship as she works on figuring a way to make things work for everyone.
I really love how Sheila builds the story. Different scenarios have you thinking you can guess at what's coming next but as you read on you realize you were wrong. Through the twists, the suspense builds up to the gratifying end. I highly recommend this book, and series, to anyone who loves a good mystery with a surprise ending.
Sheila Lowe surely knows how to write. This is not the first my first book of hers and I hope it’s not the last but this story disappointed me somewhat. What I mean by that is that there are whole parts ( like the hand writing expert ) was not necessary, this case was solved by an old fashioned detective work and the motive also didn’t make sense, yes it would have cost money to change the factory but with the new patent the money is not a problem any more so no motive, about bad PR, it seems to me that a new healthy formula would bring good PR so again no motive. The whole book was great till the end which was to quick ( it was like 9 good hours of a story and about 10 minutes of a hurry up endings ) and badly done, which is why it disappointed me because it was really good and hard to put down.
This is a good book with a quick ending ( I listened to it in audio but it feels like that she raps it all up in one page ). Even so I still would recommend this book, it was 9 hours of good and she sure writes very well. It’s one of those books that I would say decide for yourself.
Got this audiobook for free in exchange for an honest review.
The expert witness for the prosecution gets violently assaulted by the accused right in the courtroom! It's a given that she develops PTSD complete with flashbacks, but her significant other (who is a police detective) isn't available for a lot of support because of a murder caused by an eco terrorism proponent. And that's just the beginning of this outstanding mystery novel whose lead character is a forensic graphologist! Expect learning opportunities, serious plot twists, red herrings, and ingenious suspense in this series in which any book is capable of being a stand alone. Loved it! The narrator is Anna Crowe who is exceptional! I requested and received a free audio copy much to my delight.
Although this is book six, it is my first encounter with forensic expert Claudia Rose; I'm now looking forward to more. Many previous incidents are incorporated by reference, but merely enrich background for this standalone tale. Murder and mayhem pull us into the world of the pesticide producers and some of their deadliest products, reminding us that profit and greed often trump the human equation but also pointing out the delicate balance between extending food supplies to save lives and promoting safety in the application of those measures. But don't let the deep background quandry dissuade you from enjoying this international thriller which, as wonderfully vocalized by narrator Anna Crowe, pulls you into the drama from the start.
Outside the Lines (Forensic Handwriting Mystery #6) was a great read by Sheila Lowe. Claudia was on the witness stand as the forensic handwriting expert. Unfortunately in the court room, she’s assaulted and left bloodied and bruised. Her fiancé learns of the attack while investigating a homicide. He needs to bring her expertise in when Joel needs her to identify handwriting found near the crime scene. Unfortunately for Claudia her fears from her assault continue to get her. She wants to get away and accepts an invite to a handwriting lecture in the UK. Things don’t go as planned for Claudia. I loved reading this book and can’t wait to read more by Sheila Lowe.
My seventh read from author Sheila Lowe and the sixth book in the Forensic Handwriting Series. Good, well-written mystery that takes off like a jet from an aircraft carrier in the opening pages and never lets up! With every book she writes Lowe continues to sculpt her craft and gets better & better. The characters likable & attention holding. The plot and the sub-plot were both well-developed. I was given an Audible copy of this book & am voluntarily reviewing it. I'll definitely be reading more in this series as new books come up.
Handwriting analysis is a fascinating subject and I've enjoyed all the little bits I've learned from the Claudia Rose books in Ms. Lowe's series. This one was especially enjoyable because not only does the author offer up a grisly, complicated crime in Los Angeles, but also takes us to London where even more twists and turns take place. A real thriller! I'm looking forward to reading more Claudia Rose and Joel Jovanic books in the future!
I really enjoyed this book. In addition to following a great story, I learned about handwriting experts, something I have heard of but didn't know too much about. I'm looking forward to reading more from this author. On a personal note, it is always fun to read about characters in scenes from the book that take place in the town where I live. It is so much more vivid to picture the characters on the streets, neighborhoods or in buildings I see every day.
Sheila Lowe does a wonderful job of writing this series. I enjoy these stories. Sheila is a real-life forensic handwriting examiner. I especially enjoyed the insights provided into how handwriting analysts work and the details of handwriting that provide clues to the writer's personality. Anna Crowe does an excellent job of narrating this book. I was gifted this audiobook with the understanding that I would leave an honest review.
Enjoyed the handwriting analysis I this characteristic mystery-thriller. More mystery than thriller but good easy read with elements of conservationism and chemical pollution involved in the story line. A little twist at the end.
I love a good mystery. I especially love one that teaches me while I’m trying to determine the culprit. I don’t claim to understand forensic handwriting and how so much can be ascertained by so little. I do, however, understand what brain research is teaching us about the importance of cursive writing. I am thankful that Ms. Lowe put it out there. I’ve recently been trying to find foods that are more life friendly, and the information about pesticides is illuminating. The way this data is woven into a can’t-put-it-down mystery is masterful. I look forward to reading more of Claudia Rose.
Audiobook: This story held my attention from the opening paragraphs until the end. I have found all the mysteries in this series to be twisted like pretzels which was true for this story also. One of my favorite things about this series has been the convoluted mystery featured in each story which I found entertaining, but this mystery was more thought-provoking for me due to the subject matter. I am looking forward to the next book in the series. I thought Anna Crowe's narration was good, and her performance kept my attention. I was given a copy of the audiobook. I volunteered, without financial gain, to post this review which included my honest opinions regarding this tale.
A throughly interesting and highly entertaining story, I was totally immersed in the book and couldn’t put it down. It can be read as a stand alone but be warned if you read one you will want to read the others. Great characters who are real and relatable combined with a fantastic storyline, what’s not to like.
Anna Crowe again delivers a great narration, I’ve not yet looked up what else she’s narrated but it’s high on my to do list.
This was such a fun listen, both in terms of the story and the narration. With each book I am learning more and more re forensic handwriting but it is explained in a patronising way which is great. The relationships are developing.
Thoroughly recommend.
I was given a free book by the author but the review is entirely my own.
Most Americans would not notice but there were a couple of mistakes, niggles but mistakes. I think an editor should do a little research before editing a book that features another country.
