In the summer of 1994, psychologist Daniel Hill buys a rustic farmhouse nestled in the rolling hills of West Virginia.

That was fucking terrifying

“The Exorcist's House” by Nick Roberts started out with a Prologue that set the tone for what would be one wild ride into a horror novel that’s jam-packed with, yes, you guessed it, demons. That Prologue set the tone nicely right off the bat as it made me even more interested to read this besides the creepy and awesome book cover.
This was the first time reading a novel by Roberts and I have to say, he’s an incredible author. I love his style of writing as the atmosphere, events, and situations all throughout this novel were absolutely brilliant. My goodness, it takes what I’d expect out of a horror novel but is taken to new demonic levels thanks to such an amazing story.
I loved all the different characters and the uniqueness of their roles in this novel. I especially loved Merle and of course, BUCK! Besides the characters, I genuinely enjoyed several insane scenes in “The Exorcist's House” that completely blew my mind. I’m talking to the point where my jaw was on the floor due to the pure madness of it all. Making funny and weird faces because I couldn’t believe I was reading that.
The tension throughout reading this novel was also fantastic. Some parts were beyond terrifying and right up my alley when it comes to horror novels. It was all so unique and exciting that it was so hard to put down, especially deep into the night where I just kept reading because it was that suspenseful.
Needless to say, this has everything and then some when it comes to exorcisms. I’m talking incredible details on recorded exorcisms, stories about them, demonology, priests, and more. It all felt authentic and pushed the envelope when it comes to being a truly horrific read. I loved the buildup to the climactic ending which was so great, it was not what I expected at all. I was left speechless, to be honest. It was that impactful, memorable, and again, jaw on the floor as I could not believe that actually happened.
I give “The Exorcist's House” by Nick Roberts a perfect 5/5 as he has a new reader in me from this day on. This was a wonderful read from start to finish that I’ll remember for many years to come. If you love horror and especially anything to do with demons, I’d highly recommend this novel because it’s that creepy, scary, and well, magnificent. Several scenes were brutal and added an element of terror that brought it all together nicely. Don’t read this alone at night.

Because why not buy a house owned by an exorcist that died in a mysterious fire in mentioned house. There is nothing that could go wrong with that all!?! So anyway, the Hill family decide to buy this homestead to live in and eventually sell. Unfortunately, demons popping in during an open house does not increase its selling point. Not to mention the rotten egg smell that comes in under the basement door. The Hills find themselves in a battle of life or death with something ancient. Excellent read!

The Hill family moves into a house on the countryside. It's former owner (Merle Blatty, love his last name) was an exorcist with a tragic history. Will the newcomers survive? Things get out of hand when Daniel Hill opens the door to the basement. What does he find there? A gateway to hell? What about his pregnant wife and daughter? Well written horror novel with reference to Amityville and The Exorcist. A very grim evil entity and some sinister passages. Some passages were a bit slow but I liked the eerie parts and the demon. Really recommended modern variation of The Exorcist.

Spooky Chiller!
Backstory:
Daniel Hills along with his wife, Nora and their daughter Alice decide to leave Ohio and move to rural West Virginia where Daniel buys an old farmhouse. They love the peacefulness of the farm and the quiet of being out in the country.
When they start exploring the house they find some "interesting" things within the old farmhouse including a secret room that has an old well that is covered and has crosses around it. Daniel also finds trunks that are locked and pushed back into the corner of the basement. When opened they find a lot of old clothing but one trunk holds something entirely different - old vhs tapes and tons of journals which the family finds out belonged to an Exorcist that had once lived in the house.
When Daniel becomes too curious with the well room and decides to open the well is when the crap hits the fan as what lies within the well has been longing to get out and now that it is set free there will be hell to pay!
That is about all I can give on a backstory without giving away spoilers, so if you want to know more then you will need to read the book!
Thoughts:
This book was one of the scariest books I have read in a long time! First time reading this author and I was impressed with the pace of the story. It literally kept my insomnia fueled as I made my way through the story.
I loved the slow buildup with the story but something does happen right away to give a taste of what is to come but then the suspense is built up slowly to give just enough taste to keep you reading. From the moment with the discovery of the well and the old trunks belonging to an Exorcist, I knew then that I was going to be seeing some series stuff and it was coming as I could feel it picking up speed within the story as things go from peaceful and serene to chaos and hellfire!
This book definitely kept me on my toes and also kept me so wrapped up within the story that everything disappeared around me. There are quite a few "jump scares" in this book too and one night when my cat darted past my chair it spooked me so bad that I about came up out of the chair as I thought it was shadows moving in my room. 😆 That is what I get for reading a scary book in the dark plus for even better atmosphere reading the book after midnight on my kindle.
So if you want to be scared out of your wits and you want a book that will keep you encased in fear then go grab this book as you will not be disappointed. I truly think that this book would make an awesome horror movie as the fear and the scares of this story would be perfect up on the big screen. Another horror author added to my list of discovered authors! Looking forward to reading more books by this author. Giving this book five "Scary Demonic" stars!

⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
The power of Christ compels me… to write an honest review. I think this book was straight down the center mid.
Admittedly, this might be because my brain has been systematically desensitized over the course of multiple decades by a steady drip of crab-walking, demon-inhabited children,
thus making the possession trope feel entirely commonplace and pedestrian. I am incapable of feeling fear. I think I might be broken.
The story was enjoyable and my attention rarely strayed. My interest in seeing how it concluded dragged me through those few distracted moments. The characters were fine. They had streaming service movie grade depth, which meant that I wanted them to live, but would have been fine with a little collateral damage too. I could have gone either way.
There were some big holes in the story that I won’t get into, but I’ll just say this: if sealing a well traps things, why were said things out in the first place when the well was already sealed?
Nick Roberts is a gem, and I love his books. This just happens to be my least favorite of his. You should still read it though. Just because I’m broken doesn’t mean you are too…

♠️ It’s one thing to deal with monsters ghosts demons killers etc in horror fiction. It’s another thing when everyone you care about becomes them. Maybe even you. And you can’t break free.
♠️I’m not the horror lit aficionado but one area of the genre I do know a bit about is exorcism. The author’s demon talk, priest talk and the holy rituals in the novel are consistent with what I’ve read in case studies (whether you believe in them or not). For instance, Hostage to the Devil or The Exorcist or books on exorcism by the late Fr Amorth on which the upcoming Russell Crowe movie The Pope’s Exorcist is based.
♠️So the story? Horrific. Shocking. Chilling. Relentless.
♠️Diabolical, tight, dark murderous writing.
♠️Welcome to your new nightmare.

Fantastic ending! The Exorcist House was ranging around 4 stars until that ending. It just took it from good horror to great.
The Exorcist House has everything in it that I love about the horror genre. This was such a fun book to read around this time of the year.
✔️ Scary moments in the book that made me feel uneasy and spooked!
✔️ October, it’s the most wonderful time of the year for a demon possession.
✔️ Buck, our goodest boy. The best bloodhound around.
✔️ The good ole Catholic starter kit to fight an evil presence. Holy water, rosary beads, crosses and all.
Really glad to read this one and highly recommend it to all my horror lovers out there!

An engaging haunted house horror.
'Cobwebs adorned every corner like a long abandoned Gothic manor. In the center of the room was what looked like a cube of bricks, and in the corner was another one of Merle’s antique chests.'
Overall this was a thoroughly enjoyable read. I am very partial to tales of haunted houses and demonic possessions.
The story itself had me fully in its grip from early on and kept me entertained until the last word. The writing was concise and very well-paced, although it was a little too simplistic to completely leave me enveloped in its world. This for me led to a slight lack of atmosphere, which I often need to truly love a work of fiction.
There were also a couple of excessively cheesy, cringeworthy moments. One of which maybe would have led me to quit reading if it was not for me enjoying the story so much. These negatives ultimately led me to downgrade my rating from what would have possibly been a four-star rating.
'Her heart rose up to her throat as she descended through space and time. She sunk through a warm jelly-like substance into a black abyss.'
It was a fun and creepy read which was ultimately let down by a few issues.

⟢ While reading this book, I couldn’t stop thinking about the scene in This Is The End with Jonah Hill: “the power of Christ compels you,” “guess what? It’s not that compelling.”
⟢ Now friends, don’t be alarmed if some of my reviews aren’t going to be my usual long rants because, shocking as this may sound, sometimes I just don’t have a lot to yap about.
⟢ The Exorcist’s House was one of the scariest books I’ve read in a long time. Even though I had to suspend my disbelief for some parts, I enjoyed it. And I’m glad the dog didn’t die. The End~

⟢ While reading this book, I couldn’t stop thinking about the scene in This Is The End with Jonah Hill: “the power of Christ compels you,” “guess what? It’s not that compelling.”
⟢ Now friends, don’t be alarmed if some of my reviews aren’t going to be my usual long rants because, shocking as this may sound, sometimes I just don’t have a lot to yap about.
⟢ The Exorcist’s House was one of the scariest books I’ve read in a long time. Even though I had to suspend my disbelief for some parts, I enjoyed it. And I’m glad the dog didn’t die. The End~

In the spirit of transparency, I did receive an advanced copy of this book to read and review from the publisher, Crystal Lake Publishing.
In FULL transparency, I practically BEGGED the publisher for a copy when I read the premise.
This is my first time reading work written by Nick Roberts. I will absolutely dig into his backlog and keep my eyes peeled for any future pieces.
THE EXORCIST'S HOUSE has some of my most favorite horror-related things: possession, exorcisms not sanctioned by the Catholic Church, a haunted house, the fresh start/new beginning trope and of course the family dog who is the bestest boy when it comes to protecting his family.
There was no way I was not going to love this story. I was not disappointed either. In fact, Nick Robert exceeded expectations - I honestly thought I'd exhausted the exorcism/possession tropes but this one has several original elements that leveled it up in my opinion. The first time I got surprised, I thought "Wow! That's a first!" I didn't think there would be more - but there was!
Now, this is a horror story - but did it deliver? Heck yes! I was downright terrified in places - in fact, the first night I got deep off into it, I was just reading about a certain basement scene when both my dogs sat up, one growling softly. I didn't hear whatever it was that they did and they wouldn't let it go. I finally went to the bedroom to where my husband was and he said he kept hearing a sound that sounded like someone was trying to put a key in the lock of our front door. He was sitting there watching the camera as we were talking. That messed me UP. Neither of us slept well that night.
The last 20% of the story ran me through the wringer: fear, relief, anger, surprise, bittersweet, TERROR - heck I even found religion myself! It was so well written, the story was crafted so well that even knowing the ending, I will absolutely reread this one again...just for the thrills and chills.
Excellent work - I'm looking forward to more from Nick Roberts. This kind of writing and story crafting is addicting.

In The Exorcist’s House, the Hill family move from the city into a West Virginia farmhouse. They meet a local boy called Luke who offers to help them with chores around the house’s land. The Hill family are Daniel, Nora and their 15 year old daughter Alice. Nora is also pregnant with their second child.
The house’s former owner, Merle Blatty (we love that nod to the OG Exorcist there 😜) turns out to have been an Exorcist. But, what horrors will be unlocked in Merle’s old home? Maybe all will be revealed in the basement…
Idk why but it took me until about half way through the book to get properly hooked but once I was, I throughly enjoyed it. I thought I guessed where the story was going but there was enough twists and turns that made it a page-turner. Also some gory, horrifying moments. I’m glad that one scene with Nora didn’t end the way it could have done - I was wincing !!
The ending was gobsmacking 😳😱 sets itself up perfectly for a sequel. Nick Roberts is a promisingly good horror writer, whose work I am sure to check out more of in the near future!

Ok, this is one of “those books”. After buying a dead exorcist’s house as a flip investment, instead of doing constructive work let’s take the time to dislodge bolted down areas and remove crosses from those areas, and read journals. “What could possibly go wrong?”
The exorcist’s last name was Blatty. I don’t know if that was a nod to the book The Exorcist or a coincidence, but there it is for whatever reason.

The writing was annoying to me. Accents slipped in and out when certain characters were speaking, conversation was not realistic, and motives were either over explained or not clear, or made no sense at all. The POV changed too much for me as well.
I do have to say the first chapter or so of the book was well done. After that, it was just like one of those “haunt” television shows where everyone has crazy scary stuff happen that causes them to scream and scream, then they refuse to leave even though there is an obvious danger to their family. Two stars.

I can't state enough how much anyone that loves horror should read this book! It was fantastic from start to finish. This story was so well told, the characters were all solid and I was legitimately creeped out. Such a fun one, I read the last 25% under a blanket with my big brave dog (Buffy) on my lap for emotional support. Definitely going to be looking into more from Nick Roberts because this was so good! Recommend y'all go buy this immediately!

Listen I don't scare easily.. but this audiobook was genuinely SO CREEPY AND TERRIFYING OMG 😭 Kudos to the narrator on that HORRIFYING DEMON VOICE 👹
This exceeded my expectations! I gobbled this up in one day I could not stop listening no matter how creepy it got; it was that addictive!
I really liked the author's style and the characters were so likable especially Daniel with his corny dad jokes😅 This felt like a genuine horror movie reminiscent of The Conjuring and The Omen but it was still unique enough to stand out against other exorcism horrors.
That ending?? Literally how dare you? Most definitely reading book 2 soon!

Well, that was a steaming pile of garbage.
This book was not only poorly written -- especially the horrific dialog! -- but filled with every. single. trope. from the "exorcism" sub-genre imaginable. There wasn't a new idea or concept to be found, and everything was painfully predictable and corny. The characters themselves were all one-note and brainless, including the demon(s).
The worst thing is, this book has such a high rating and I HAVE NO IDEA WHY. It was barely worth even hate-reading!

This book was a lot of fun. it offered a well balance haunted house story between familiar elements of traditional haunted house, books, and stuff that was fresh to this book.
Is ready to latch onto these characters and see how they were people who were just trying the best but often failed and less than perfect people.

A solid horror story about a family moving into a farm house, finding to all of our surprise that it used to belong to an exorcist and starting to experience scary things. Really scary things.
I thought there were some genuinely frightening moments here and it's well-written too. Audiobook narrator Spencer Dillehay was amazing too, he seriously gave me the chills while impersonating a certain character.

Listen, I don’t care how much you spent on a new house, the second you find a creepy, secret room in the basement covered in crucifixes, you cut your loss and get the hell outta dodge. Of course, the Hill family does the exact opposite, and the fallout is one of my favorite books of 2022. It’s rare for a book to give me the same fear of walking down my hallway at night as a movie, but The Exorcist’s House made me second guess every shadow and creak and moan of the house. I’m absolutely living for the chills every visual sent down my spine. Pick this up, have fun with it, and enjoy sleeping with a nightlight on.

What a terrific choice to read during the Halloween season! As with most horror fans, I'm a really big fan of The Exorcist. Such a believable and very creepy movie. I feel the same evil dread watching that movie now that I did when I first saw it so long ago. I mention this because The Exorcist's House has that same feel for me. Believable, true evil and creepiness pervade the story and really had me looking at the shadows each night as I put the book down to head for bed. Thoroughly enjoyed this read and look forward to reading more by this author. 5/5 stars!

This book was excellent, and not for the faint of heart! Talk about a creepy read. The pacing was great and I enjoyed the gaps in memory where you’d find out later what happened. This book kept me on my toes and I can’t wait to read more from this author.

This book wasn’t necessarily bad, it just wasn’t really anything at all. Most of it was pretty cliche and not super interesting. Like if you just thought of the most basic demonic possession story it would probably be this book.

4.5 🌟NOW THATS WHAT YOU CALL A GOOD HORROR BOOK. BATSHIT CRAZY DEMON WITH FIRE EYES AND SCARY TEETH. Gonna go to sleep with my bible under my pillow.
A psychiatrist and his family move into a home down in Virginia on the notion that they are going to revamp it and put it on the market within three months, except the home doesn't want to let them go nor what lies in the basement.
I actually enjoyed all the characters, they were flawed yes but if anything I was rooting for everything one of them by the end. The dog (bloodhound) was actually so cute and sweet, I loved him so much.
There were parts in this that I audibly gasped and was shocked, the gore and the grotesque descriptions of the demons and people made me a little sick to my stomach, but not overkill? It was just really descriptive and I could see every detail in my head. I love me some gore and this one isn't OVER the top which I enjoyed.
I normally have trouble rating horror books above a 4 star, because they truly do not scare me EVER. So for this to effect me so much I have to rate it highly.
the .5 was taken off d/t POVs switched up without paragraph breaks. sometimes, he would go between 2/3 peoples POVS within 2-3 paragraphs, I never knew who's head I was in for a second, and it honestly stressed me out, if this book wasn't actually horrifying and the story excellent, I would have DNFd 100 percent. This might just be the authors style of writing but to me, it took me out of the story until about 160 pages. after that it was so fast paced and my heart was racing I didn't notice it anymore.
But seriously, if you're looking for a fall rec, and want some good old jump scares (in a book) this is for you!!

Possession horror is my fav! It’s what scares me the most; it’s what gives me the fear “high” that I constantly chase in media. This story… omg THIS STORY… is the closest that i’ve ever gotten, while reading a possession horror novel, to feeling the absolute terror that I experience when I watch possession horror films (I feel like this genre is the exception to the book/movie rule? Maybe not always, but generally? Maybe it’s just me. Whatev)!
