Loved it when I was 20, hated it at 74. It’s a thinly veiled spiritual autobiography which really reveals the self obsession of a man disillusioned with the superficiality of contemporary (1927) culture, who rails against the immorality of the age, while bonking two beautiful young women 20 years his junior. Hesse said people didn’t understand the novel or its transcendental redemptive optimism. Not really surprising. But German friends say the prose is wonderful. Good. The novel is not.
