4.5 Stars. It's better than 4 Stars but not good enough for 5 Stars.
A brilliant read. I really enjoyed it immensely. Great strong, realistic characters, and it's incredibly fast-paced. I do recommend it if you like zombies.
This one was a hard one to rate, I feel like 3.5 stars but I don't want to round it up to 4 (Goodreads once again... give us half stars)!
Let's start with the positives. The writing was good and easy to understand. The scenes that could have gotten complicated were made easy to read and navigate. I enjoyed the multiple character and the focus on firefighters 🚒 love me some firefighters.
Unfortunately for me there was some flaws I could not get past and by the end of the book they were starting to irritate me. Some phrases and sentences were repetitive. If I had to read "sweetheart" one more time I was going to headbutt a wall. The characters were also a little bland. The only one with a personality was f*#king Theresa, who was an over bearing, controlling woman that could only be likened to a mosquito.
Wow ! What a brilliant start to a new series. Right from the beginning I felt like I was running, screaming and fighting alongside everyone in the story. Plenty of zombie gore to satisfy zombie fans and a good strong storyline to keep you riveted until the end. Very excited to read the next book.
Love this story and can’t wait for book 2 to come out :) Loved the characters and the setting. Definitely check this book out if you’re into zombies and real people :)
Trial By Fire is told from a whole slew of characters' points of view. Trial By Fire starts out with a bang of zombie fighting and never lets up. There are zombies on just about every page as each character is introduced into the fold. Trial By Fire is told mainly from the points of view of firefighters and their family members.
Trial By Fire opens up on the scene of a fire as firefighters race inside a burning building to save a little boy and his sister from their father who is trying to consume them. As they race outside with the little boy and girl in tow the scene before them is unlike anything they have ever witnessed before as people are attacking each other and biting them like a vampire but it's not vampires no it looks to be...zombies?
We are introduced to each character as they are working their way through the city trying to find a way to safety. The firefighters are trying to make their way back to their firehouse and are being attacked by zombies. On their way, the firefighters are trying to find members of their families, rescue and take them back to the firehouse where they will hopefully be safe.
Trial By Fire is full of action and zombie-fighting right out of the gate and once I opened it up and laid my eyes on that first page I never took them off until I had no choice. I can’t wait to read more from this world of zombies and to see who else we get to meet and where each character’s story takes us next.
Oh, and yeah I can’t wait for more zombie fighting as I love me some zombies. I love The Walking Dead but I must say watch out guys as Trial By Fire is going to give you a run for your money in the zombie world.
I highly recommend Trial By Fire to all zombie fans! One-click your copy of Trial By Fire today!
What a wonderful way to showcase our first responders. Showing how strong emotionally and physically firefighters and police are as well as ordinary citizens are when they have to be is really awesome. I would recommend this story to any reader that enjoys apocalypse fiction.

A unique race through the zombie apocalypse. Great cast of characters and a entertaining storyline. A group of firefighters out on a call at a fire stumble upon the beginning of the zombie apocalypse. Read on and find out how many of them can survive and make it back to the station house. Then follow their adventures as they try to save their families and a few others along the way before it’s too late. Action patch and entertaining from beginning to end. Looking forward to the next book in the series.
I thought the action adventure was great. There was so much going on I was entertained. The romance in this was awkward and I didn’t really care about them. I just liked the world building and how everything was just so chaotic. I was also amazed on how real the story felt. I could bypass the romance because of how the virus came to be and how much people didn’t know in the beginning. I hope the next book is better in the romance department.
Unfortunately the author chose not to set this series in her home country and instead opted for an imaginary pseudo-American location. So instead of a new and unusual backdrop we get sameness and no real sense of place.
Using first responders as main characters is a neat idea, and the book is reasonably well written. But the overall story feels a bit two dimensional.
A really great start to this new & exciting zombie end of the world story! I loved the characters, ideas & storyline, interesting stuff! As always with this writer, well thought out, fast paced action & great solutions for the adverse situations the characters find themselves in! A great escape & very enjoyable read!
I started to read this book because it had firefighters in it as main characters. I love the use of firefighters as they are already equipped to handle a serious event and I wasn’t disappointed. Good story line and lots of characters to follow. So far it really good.
Trial by Fire is unusual in that it focuses on a group of firefighters. In most zom/poc stories all the emergency personnel disappear. But, not this time, instead they’re working together to save survivors. I recommend it to anyone that loves the genre.
I've loved all of the zombie series Bailiegh Higgins has written and I was excited to find one I hadn't this first of the series hasn't disappointed it has everything you need and want in a real world environment and leaves the question what would you do in an outbreak of zombies?
Ive read a lot of zombie books and this just doesnt do it for me. The writing is awful really wooden and not well done. So much info dumping and all the telling none of the showing. Its just all " [Name] is big and strong" instead of just having the reader experience the character being big and strong. The characters are cardboard cut outs and have no development. All the dialog is so stilted and unnatural. The view point switches around constantly and unnecessarily so it can info dump some background on the characters.
Everyone just adapts to the end of the world as they know it and all their friends being dead so smoothly and easily. Its just badly written.
There's the barest hint of a plot but overall pretty much nothing happens. Theres no excitement or tension.
I dont recommend it. There are many much better zombie books out there.
I love books about the apocalypse. I thought this book was extremely good. The way the group of fire fighters all come together to help save the people who are trapped by the flesh eating zombies. It is well written and definitely keeps you hooked. I will be downloading the next book right after this review.
I have read this book and truly loved it and I'm looking forward to the rest of this series. I enjoy reading her books and she has a talent for bringing you into her stories. Well I would highly recommend this book and to follow the series.
Yet again baileigh hits it out of the park. From the very beginning your hooked as the adventure begins. No spoilers but I can say imagine big strong firemen and zombies. Can't wait for book 2 pre ordered. Highly recommended all Baileigh Higgins books fabulous writer 5*
Baileigh Higgins is the queen of the zombie apocalypse, in my opinion. And Trial By Fire is a fine example of zombies and firefighters. Chock full of exciting moments and very near misses, this book should be on every reader of apocalypse.
Great reading. A virus has turned people in to monsters . In the middle of all the violence and slaughter a group of firemen have survived and are collecting survivor's. It will be interesting to see where the story goes. Looking forward to the next book.
Just because the apocalypse has come calling, these men and women don’t hesitate to rise to the call and continue to help their fellow man above themselves.
Loved the beginning of this new zombie apocalypse series!
I've read all of Baileigh Higgins books and she never disappoints. This one is off to a great start! Well developed storylines, realistic characters, thrilling action. Can't wait to read what's next for the characters.
Fast paced story. Society quickly deteriorated after a virus surfaces that turn people into zombies after being bitten. Read the shock and horror of the survivors in this tale
Awesome! Getting to know the major players in an apocalypse filled with zombies. Very graphic and brutal but I’m sure a real apocalypse would be more intense. Love this series!
So much plot errors, no realy character involment, I just could not enjoy it or get into the story or the characters -> I loved the idea though. Stopped reading it in the middle of book 3, I just could not go on anymore.
Fast easy read. I was confused a couple times where a main character gets bit and you can understand that it was painful, but it wasn't clear at first to me that it wasn't a deadly bite. Everything quickly goes from everything is normal to kill to survive.
This books revolves around firefighters as our survivors of the Zombie apocalypse. I have not read a book set up like this before, so it is refreshing. I like the characters who are everyday people like you and I. I am looking forward to reading more of this series!
Baileigh Higgins is amazing. I have loves everything of hers I have read. Her character s are believable and easy to care about. Her storylines flow smoothly.
