After human and Maltaani forces cooperated to rescue the hostages being held by slavers on the icy planet of Menard-Kev, leaders on both sides agreed that peace between the races was desirable. A treaty was signed, and embassies were established.
Unrest between the Maltaani royalists, who rule their home planet, and their nationalist subjects—already at a low boil—intensifies with the establishment of the Terran embassy in the Maltaani capital city of Daarben, and, when a report is released stating that humans and Maltaani are of the same genetic stock, things are pushed to the breaking point. In the midst of this unrest, the Galactic Resource Conglomerate is operating in the shadows, completing deals that are sure to only push things further toward catastrophe.
With the security situation in the capital worsening, First Lieutenant Abner Fortis, now the executive officer of Lima Company, is ordered to establish a forward operating base at the spaceport near Daarben and stand by to assist the embassy in whatever way they need.
But, with things already falling apart, will Lima Company’s presence help keep the peace, or will they cause an international incident that finally pushes everything over the edge?

I really enjoyed reading this and I'm looking forward to the next in the series. The writing is full of adventure and Excitement Fortis is a great marine And his actions are on Lock step with our current marine corps. Unfortunately I think things are changing in the world and not for the better The military man separates This book is how the military can be manipulated I made the scapegoat, Long and short of it this is an excellent book and an excellent series and I'm enjoying it immensely.
Not as good as the previous books; in fact, I felt disappointed. I thought it had a weak storyline and, to be honest, was boring. Nothing happened for the first two-thirds of the book; it was a very long build-up to a very disappointing climax. Even the action felt mundane. Let’s face it, when someone mentions diplomacy, action and excitement are not your first thoughts. The internal squabbling of an alien race on the verge of a civil war with their political and social differences is hardly an exciting idea. Adding a human element to the mix should have been an interesting concept, but sadly, it fell flat on its face. The framing of Fortis for the massacre of the villagers to stir up the already tenuous situation was a good idea but lacked follow-through. Propaganda and misinformation are all weapons used in many conflicts to devastating effect.
Let's face it, diplomacy isn't exactly one of the top qualities I would have put on Abner Fortis CV. And yet... he is sent to a diplomatic mission on the enemy planet, as XO of a newly-formed combined arms company (Lima Company) with his old bosses Nils Anders and Admiral Kinshaw. Civil war is threatening the planet and the terrans are caught in the middle of a deadly game, particularly as old enemies of Abner resurface who only look forward to making money, whatever it takes... Curious ? Go read the book.... and look forward to number 6 already. :)
Absolutely LOVED this series. The humor was perfectly balanced with the action and the main character was just imperfect enough to be real. The author did an amazing job describing the world in a succinct and tasteful way that gave you a picture without describing a blade of grass for four pages. Perfect detail. Loved the whole series and wish there were more books with Abner in them!
I like these because they are very much marine books.
This is a political book, all the way to the end. It clearly is a set up for the series, but the change is jarring to the series as a whole. I have had likes and dislikes about the series, but this is the first one that I would consider a one star.
Abner finds himself in an unexpected place where he sees combat once again. However the book is actually full of the process of getting the ISMC to the fight and some intrigue that I assume will be addressed more fully in the next book.
I don’t know what to say about this series other than I love it. The characters are solid & Mr. Piatt’s writing keeps me reading and wanting more! What more can a reader ask for? The next book of course!
This series is worth your time to binge on. Each book is better than the last. Although book 2 is my favorite so far. These are good space marine stories and with great characters and plots read them read them all
